Mayor of NYC Bill DiBlasio: Get Ready for a "Shelter in Place" Order For NYC Within the Next 48 Hours

This is a serious escalation.

New Yorkers should prepare for a "shelter-in-place" order in the coming days as local officials try to contain the fast-moving coronavirus that’s spreading throughout the U.S., New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday, adding that a decision will be made in the next 48 hours.

"We are all deeply concerned ... this is quite clear this is a fast growing crisis," he said at a press conference. "All New Yorkers, even though a decision has not been made by the city or the state, I think that all New Yorkers should be prepared right now for the possibility of a shelter-in-place order."

Flashback:

DiCommio was asked why when after gyms were closed in New York he was still going to a gym (with all of his body guards in tow) He responded that he has to stay healthy to make decisions for the city

To use a crisis as a means to undermine personal freedom and subvert the Constitution is perhaps the most heinous of all actions. It shows a proclivity towards the dictatorial and autocratic. It reveals a person more apt to abuse power, than use it as a means to truly protect the people.

This is not the judicious use or the people's government, it's weaponizing it against them. We should never let people like DeBlasio forget that

Also know as geometric increasing for discrete cases.

THe rate of increase of a thing is proportional to thing itself. Something doubles at some constant rate.

2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, ...

That's a geometric/exponential series. Something you'll note is that the next step, the increase, is always 1 greater than the sum of all previous terms.

223 BTW, really annoyed that the Feds aren't releasing detailed data on who and how this affects.

What age and sex are the people who require a hospital visit? Same for people who need to be watched, provided oxygen? Same for people who end up in critical care? And of those groups, how many are free of underlying medical conditions?

At WH press conference one of the doctors was asked about this data but she hemmed and hawed and did not give a clear answer that such info would definitely be released. I suspect this might not happen because of HIPA.

I'm willing to play along with the admin's plan, but still wonder if the people who are in danger of being sent to hospital are a very well defined, limited, demo. If my hunch is correct, why not let this thing spread like wildfire amount the healthy while taking extreme measures to isolate the vulnerable?

THis is not the flu. Not the flu. Not the flu. Can't be compared to the flu. Spreads faster and causes ARDS, takes a long time to get people off of the vent, requires huge amount of resources to care for them. You will be extremely dismissive of this until someone you care about dies.

For most, like the flu it will be a minor inconvenience of an illness. Others are going to die a slow miserable death, and if we dont slow it down the numbers will make the 2017 flu look like childsplay. I'm not saying freak the fuck out, but it is stupid to be dismissive.

267 The cases double about every 2.5 days. Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy

and needs a lot of adjustment, because only some are tested. testing won't change the real curve (unless maybe it forces positive results to quarantine). But if we quarantine everyone, not just spreaders .. result is same. But increased testing might find mildly infected ... even if they have been out there the whole time and may now be in decline (past peak on that curve).

but sure ... do some random testing to see what we have going on. We are supposed to be heading to peak doubling ... so peak death rate should also increase, or maybe they are past peak, and will only be measuring "peak testing".

and yeah, hot zones will be different ... like Hillary "they should be locked up". heh keep your cooties away.

What, you're going to arrest me and thousands of others who are tired of your BS? Where are you going to put us... in prisons without enough beds? While also overcrowding us? To keep us safe and healthy from Covid-19?

Now he is the type who would do this, but it's getting to the point where such rebellion is actually necessary. There's some civil/social experimentation going on to see just how far petty tyrants can go here. I'm not just worried about this event and the levels of panic being induced. I'm much more concerned about the precedent.

Look at what the government did in response to 9/11? Redesigned numerous aspects of government without addressing the elephant in the room which was Islam, sharia, and its incompatibility with western law. And that which was designed to protect us from radicalism (FISA) was turned internally and illegally to attack Americans and institute a presidential coup.

There's more afoot than just a response to a virus. This Covid-19 response is, while real, a concern not just for our health and welfare but for that which it sets up for future "crises".

The lockdowns are designed to slow the spread of the disease person to person. This is the way to lower the natural R0 of the disease, which they're putting at 2.0 - 2.5 for this stupid Woo-woo flu. Flu itself is about 1.3.

Out here in the SF area we've already been living this for a while.

The reality is: The cops generally won't hassle or arrest you if you go out anyway - -unless you're just lounging around looking sketchy. One is allowed to go about one's outdoor business if on is a worker at an "essential" business or government office, so it's not like no one is on the streets. Just fewer people. Also, you're allowed to go out to shop for "necessary" things and the visit family members who need caring, so one could have all sorts of excuses ready tp use should one ever encounter a cop. "I need to buy some MD 20/20! I'm a wino! I'll get the DTs without it! It's a medical necessity!"

To everyone who keeps pointing out that *to date* fatalities are less than snake bites or whatever, these are *in addition* to the normal medical burden.

As more old people need hospitalization, it will overload the system, so that people who get in car accidents, or have routine medical problems will be denied timely treatment.

So stop with the whole "only the old will perish." Kids with severe flu symptoms or other ailments will die because the system will break if we don't get in front of this.

But now we have a 1 trillion dollar stimulus, and roughly 250 billion of it has been detailed. The rest? Who fucking knows.

A Kentucky novel coronavirus patient checked himself out of the hospital against medical advice. So to prevent him from spreading the virus, officials are surrounding his house to keep him there.

The 53-year-old man in Nelson County refused to quarantine himself after testing positive for Covid-19, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said.
Nelson County officials "forced an isolation" on the man, one of the first 20 confirmed Covid-19 cases in the state.

"It's a step I hoped that I'd never have to take," Beshear said in a conference on Saturday. "But I can't allow one person who we know has this virus to refuse to protect their neighbors."

This is what happens when the public is simultaneously getting scientific messages about the pandemic AND political messages about the pandemic AND MSM shit-stirring messages about the pandemic AND social media rumor mongering about the pandemic.

There are no cases (at this time) in West Virginia.

Posted by: DocJ at March 17, 2020 04:46 PM (DU2N9)

Meh, who knows. I might not be such an alcoholic.....In any event, I look at a lot of dead person lungs. If you have had a bad case of the flu, you can get significant scarring, even if it doesn't show much on scans. If you just got alveolar disease and it got cleared quick its OK, but if you had widespread bronchiolar and alveolar disease, that can lad to serious trouble down the road when mr random streetwalking virus comes calling again.
I can't tell what's going to happen to anyone, and who knows, you might get this and barely have a sniffle. But you might not. Personally, I wouldn't chance it. Your mileage may vary.

SOCIAL DISTANCING
Please stop going to the beach, restaurants, riding your bikes in packs of people. Ormond Beach People, STOP BEING SELFISH! No one wants your germs. Stop complaining about everything closing. Don*t go to the gyms. That*s just gross. Stop going to visit your friends and taking your grubby little children to birthday parties. Stop buying crap in bulk. Your own selfishness is killing someone else. That*s on you. Do the things you HAVE to do. No one has to go out to eat. Dumb

Someone challenged her about {grubby children}. Her response:

Children carry diseases. It*s just a known fact. They don*t have the knowledge or foresight to wash correctly. They are dangerous, just like the fleas of the bubonic plague.

My thoughtful contribution:

Hair on fire! Hair on fire! Everyone do things MY way or you're a dumb ol* poopyhead!!

Jeeze, lighten up already. If you don*t want to go out, don*t go out. That simple. If people are buying CRAP in bulk, then you*re obviously too wise to be affected because you wouldn*t be buying any.

My {grubby little children} (if I still had any who were little) would be in the group least affected by the disease as well as the least able to understand why they can*t have their birthday party when Johnny and Jessica had theirs last month. And I*d make sure when you get older and are looking for help that they knew your opinion of them back when you were in YOUR prime

As for going to the gym being {just gross}, let*s just examine your life and see what disgusting little habits YOU have, shall we? Lest you misunderstand, I find {gym} to be a four-letter word and am about the farthest from a gym rat I can imagine

You are certainly allowed to voice your opinion on things, but others are also free to point and laugh at the crazy cat lady, hair ablaze, running around in circles and screaming. Have a great day.

And I hope nobody*s grubby little children ruin it by bringing you hot food or groceries.

If you have had a bad case of the flu, you can get significant scarring, even if it doesn't show much on scans. The flu infects upwards of 60 million Americans a year and causes upwards of 20 thousand deaths a year.

This is fucking madness.

Posted by: Thomas Bender at March 17, 2020 05:01 PM (FVrDO)

581 THis is not the flu.

Re this exponential stuff. Again, it's only the *initial phase* of the infection curve that is exponential, during the period when the total infections are an insignificant fraction of the total population.

It slows down once that fraction becomes appreciable.

And when you add all the complications that the simple equations don't consider, even that initial exponential becomes just a polynomial with a high exponent.

Pulmonary fibrosis can be due to a bunch of things, The key point here is that once you have bad lungs, it's easier to get worse, and the pattern of reaction to the coronavirus is fairly non-specific: it just looks like organizing airspace and interstitial disease (mostly airspace from some descriptions, but I haven't done enough homework to be sure of that).

Yep, the assisted living place my mom is at is on lockdown. Unfortunately, that means a lot of the people that go in for exercise or entertainment can't go in either. My mom has dementia, and is apparently starting to get depressed now, she's got no idea what's going on and me not being able to visit isn't helping any. Really sucks.

...

I have a friend whose elderly father is probably dying in the next couple days. He's in ICU but also isolated.

Friends mom and older brother were allowed into isolation over the weekend to say goodbye. Now they can't go back.

702 Nood.
That makes me smile, every time.

703 Doubling every two days. Why aren't we at 50,000 infected?

I'm not sure where the two day value is coming from. When I plot out the "Infected Outside of China" set, I get a doubling time of about 5-5.5 days.

I doubt the U.S. in general is much worse, but the New York state situation I gave numbers for looks to be moving along somewhat quicker.

YMMV, check your data, make sure the backs of your envelopes are clean, etc., etc.

706 Oh, and 34,000 deaths from it.

Posted by: rickb223 at March 17, 2020 05:10 PM (qjfjx)

Yeah, we normally don't quarantine whole cities over the flu, even though its much more infectious and deadly than this COVID-19, only because we know that doing so would make matters worse, like killing off whole industries creating a depression, and such type of insanity, at least we did know that until OrangeManBad! And then such suicidal methods became necessary - like choking yourself to death to prove a point or something.

Posted by: Boswell at March 17, 2020 05:19 PM (32YRo)

707 "COVID-19: U.S. at a Glance*

Total cases: 4,226
Total deaths: 75"

In case nobody else done it, let's look at the numbers:

Doing the math, that puts fatality rate at .0177

Take out the third that died in 1 nursing home as mentioned above, you get .0119

And that's leaving the presumed thousands remaining undiagnosed what ain't dead or got better out of the denominator.

But by all means, let's all go into lockdown for some undetermined span of time. Totally reasonable response, you bet.

Hey! I'm childless by non-choice and I LIKE children. So simmer down.

I don't know if it's a survival-of-genes thing, but I've met parents who have no tolerance for other people's kids. In less civilized times, perhaps such parents killed and ate other people's kids, like those cannibalistic chimpanzees that Jane Goodall studied.

That would be the end result. Because this hysteria has the same goal as climate change, complete control over human lives, and the days of dissent are drawing to an end.

722 DiBlasio knows that when things aren't going down the shitter fast enough, sometimes you have to flush twice to stay on script!

Trump's gonna end up having to send US Marshals to grab one of these guys to stop them from wrecking the economy and starting mass riots... and that might be just what they are angling for!!

723 So, I just came back from getting some food from the McDonald's drive through, and they had the illustrious Governor Gretchen on the radio.
The host was talking about some pictures of younger people in bars, and she said, "When I saw those pictures of young people in bars, I said, 'we have to shut these down'".

She then goes on to bitch about not getting test kits soon enough (whatever that means).
THEN, she said that half of Michigan's school kids are eligible for food aid.
What??!?
This is bullshit. This food giveaway has to be one of the biggest scams our there.

725 There's a great gym at Asphalt Green, just .3 miles from Gracie Mansion. But DeBlasio uses a police convoy to his gym in Park Slope, which is 11 miles away and is at least half an hour drive.
