Dow Finishes Day at +1067 (Where's Kurt?);
Trump Pitches 0% Withholding Tax for Rest of Year, to Ease Economy Through Virus Shock

Wow, a thousand point surge.

I'm going to guess the media will name this The Joe Biden Rally 2.0.

Why did it jump so much?

Well, probably partly due to people figuring out that the media is deliberately trying to cause a panic based on a virus that, while dangerous for some, is probably going to turn out to be the Y2K of pandemics.

But also partly due to Trump's proposal of a payroll cut:

Stock markets rally, with Dow surging 1,000 points at closing bell

Markets rallied after reports President Trump is considering a permanent payroll tax cut to tackle the coronavirus outbreak.

...

President Donald Trump met with lawmakers on Tuesday afternoon to discuss "major" steps to ease concerns about the economy in light of the coronavirus outbreak. Investors wavered throughout the day, parsing headlines and reports that focused on whether a robust economic package could be introduced quickly enough to shore up the growing financial impact from the coronavirus.

The odds of this happening are... zero.

But, the Democrats are playing a game of claiming that any downturn in the economy, even if caused by an epidemic which started in China and is ravaging the world, is the fault of the Bad Orange Man.

This is a political gambit to say, "Well, if you care about the economy, join me in strengthening it."

I'd like to see what the Democrats have to say about why they're refusing to do this.

I mean: If they're soooo Concerned about the economy and all.

Or are they just Concerned that it might remain too strong?

Trump pitched 0% payroll tax rate for the rest of the year, White House official says

President Donald Trump, in a meeting with Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill Tuesday, pitched a 0% payroll tax rate that would last through the rest of this year, a White House official told CNBC.

The development comes as Trump and the White House try to put together an economic stimulus plan to counteract the impact from the widening coronavirus outbreak.

The White House is also considering federal assistance for the shale industry as oil prices have tanked in recent days due to a price war between Russia and Saudi Arabia.

12 The stock market has been absolutely absurd the last few weeks.

Thousand point swings each way day after day.

If it were consistently down, that'd be one thing. If the ups were much smaller than the downs, that would be another.

Last week we had one of the largest point losses ever followed by the single highest point gain ever.

I don't expect rationality from the stock market, but this is Lewis Carrol territory. Send in the Jabberwock.

55 I have no idea if my theory is sound, but when I see the markets falling like a rock, and going past the trading breaks during the day, my suspicion is that the computerized trading is reacting to the market changes and they keep just selling until the closing bell.

Then the next day, the computers reset, see that there are major bargains on the market and head in the opposite direction.

Not saying they do this without human intervention, but I suspect the intervention happens after the markets close.

62 The stock trading all runs on algorithms. Computer driven buying and selling from the big institutions.

There is very little human input at all, unless there is a hold/stop trading order in place.

All the computer driven moves by the big institutions look at a lot of the same fundamentals, and the markets move accordingly. Which is why these sometimes massive downturns happen, because their programs all pretty much look at the same thing.
Real stock brokers and the big institutional traders don't want to admit what "Captain Dunsell's" they really are now.

But you see major drops (and gains) for stocks like Lockheed.

159 It would surprise me if the China threat about antibiotics is true. If it is, then cream them over it.

But to make a threat like that really effective, it has to be in an area where AT LEAST one of two things is true (preferably both):
- It's difficult to do
- You have a corner on the market

Neither is true for antibiotics. China has YUGE competitors in the pharma space, not least of which is India. Drug development is extremely difficult and expensive, but manufacturing often isn't and we have the know-how and plant to spin it up at home if needed.

If I am thinking like China, I am not going to touch this one - it will result in punitive measures and not have anything like as a big an effect as would be required to pay the price.

I'd far more strongly consider it in rare earth metals or microchips.

Posted by: Marcus T at March 10, 2020 04:32 PM (VpIIl)

India is withholding the chemicals to make medications for domestic use.

Read the writings from Chinese military people since 9/11. Their focus is on biowarfare not nuclear. They are withholding antibiotics because they are our enemy and are trying to weaken our population. Every globalist backing, helping, selling out America to China ever deserves capital punishment. China's goal has always been to destroy America.

Just looked it up. Chicoms hold $1.07T of our debt. Japan is still the largest holder. Well, largest holder that's not the Fed. The Fed now holds the most US debt of anyone. They monetized it with the QE. The printing press has taken care of the largest share of the outstanding debt, IOW.

Repudiating Ts would be a BFD, of course, but it's a nuclear option, and China withholding antibiotics is a nuclear level attack on us.

Right now, we need to get our drug production started up. Trump should be making that happen with whatever means are required.

It's all the high speed algorithmic trading. Let's say oil stocks are a benchmark in one algorithm. Oil falls due to the Saudis deciding to stomp on Putin's dick. That's an actual event.

So that algorithm runs and sells. Some of the stuff it sells are benchmarks for different algorithms. Those run and start to sell.

Cascades then cascade.

243 Merkel says 60 to 70% of Germans *will* be infected.

That was so wacky I had to look it up. She did say that and her health minister Jens Spahn backed that up.

But Spahn said that 80% of those "infected" would have no symptoms. So that's not quite hair on fire. 20% of 60% of Germans will get coughies.

And her chosen successor lost her seat, I think.

It's stupider than that. She let one of her 'conservatives' win a seat. The CDU is the alleged conservative party. So a CDU guy in Thueringen won the presidency of the state parliament by alligning with the AfD, the actual conservatives who are portrayed as far right.

So, follow me here, the conservative party made a local coalition with the other conservative party to keep the SPD (socialists) from winning.

Well, the CDU has a strict anti-AfD policy, so letting a CDU guy win an election meant that she (Annegrit Kramp-Karrenbauer) didn't have control of her party so she had to go.

I told you it was stupid.

While the Fed is independent and run by banksters, all its "profits", the benefits of money creation, go right back to the US Treasury. No sovereign in its right mind would give up the modern "seignorage" of money creation, and Uncle Sam is no different.

Here the Fed does not buy directly.

They give their member banks zero interest loans, so those private banks buy the stocks.

Stocks which then count against the balance sheet as a tangible asset, and thus count towards that banks 'reserves'.

The reserves needed so they can do fractional lending.

316 Don't forget you computer is probably 100 percent Chinese. It's been pointed out by several gamer's, and other computer gurus. I do hope the military has other sources. In the movie the Second Civil War it was pointed out to the President that some military parts are outsourced to China.

100% is overstating it. Most of the major chips actually aren't from mainland China (Taiwan, Malaysia, South Korea, and the US all are represented there), but basically all of the printed circuit boards and cases and power supplies are. If you buy a laptop or pre-assembled desktop, it's almost always assembled in mainland China as well.

It'll be after the election, so no problem.

Actually this could be a very beautiful thing. Once people realize how much they're paying in taxes - by having to write out ONE check - anyone who wants to raise taxes later will be lynched.

Withholding hides the pain. Notice how many people are thrilled to get a portion of their taxes back ("free money"), never thinking about where that money came from originally.

Look at the standard contagious disease models, a set of standard differential equations of varying complexity. There's a name for them, which I forget and am too lazy to look up.

The equations have no closed form analytic solution, only numerical solutions are possible, but you can ballpark some behavior out of them easily.

The initial phase of a disease is indeed exponential, but that's very short lived when the number of infected is a negligible fraction of the total population.

It peters out once it becomes large enough. Total infected peaks, then dies out.

Now, the "basic reproduction number", dubbed R_0 governs that initial exponential phase. If R_0 > 1, it's exponential. If R_0

The goal of vaccination is to drive R_0 below 1, otherwise dubbed "heard immunity".

I don't understand this attitude at all.

Have you been paying attention to what's happening in Italy as we speak? Do you think they locked down their entire fucking country for fun? There were 600 cases there 11 days ago; now there are over 10,000, continuing to increase exponentially.

Why should it be any different in the US? Within 10 days there will be thousands of cases here, and what are we doing about it? China was only able to arrest the spread by aggressively quarantining hundreds of millions of people. There's no way we could pull off anything like that here, yet that appears to be the only choice; so where does that leave us?
Critical cases need ventilator/ICU-level support in order to survive much of the time, yet we don't have anywhere near the capacity to support a huge influx of cases like that. What do you think is going to happen then?
I encourage you to read this Twitter thread for a first-hand account.

378 Somebody made a very good point somewhere earlier this week that we had about 6 weeks of Chinese folks flying into the US before the ChiComs even revealed they had a viral outbreak, and before the US even had a chance to respond. November and half of December.

So the Coronavirus has been in the US since November. But we've not seen an obvious increase in flu-like cases.

The cruise ship that just pulled in to Cali had a 20 percent infection rate and a 0.85 percent death rate, with all the dead over 70 years old.

Most of the folks who are susceptible to dying from this are people who are so old they aren't really out and about and in contact with carriers. And the rest of the population, if they've gotten this, are surviving it just like they have the "regular" flu. Things like what happened with the nursing home in Kirkland Washington that's had so many deaths is actually not going to be a common situation, I don't think.

All these panicky steps all the states are taking are occurring after the virus has already been living amongst us for 4 months. I think this thing has already burned itself out in the US, and we are just catching up and counting victims now and throwing them into catagories.

Once the victims of this are added to the "regular" flu, there won't be an appreciable increase in overall flu deaths. Just an exercise in putting people in categories and still trying to blame Trump for not being omniscient in October and knowing then that we needed 330 million Coronavirus test kits and to close the border.

If R_0 is less than 1, then there is no initial exponential phase, and the disease dies out. No epidemic. You want to vaccinate enough of the population to drive R_0 less than 1, and thus any disease will die out before it can start spreading.

I can see giving the employers a 0% payroll tax pay in, and keeping the trust fund portion from the employees withholding the same rate - that would boost the economy without completely depleting the fund too horribly. But it would have to be temporary because without serious benefit cuts later, the whole system would come crashing down a lot sooner than it already will.

Get back to me in 10 days and tell if there are "thousands of cases here". Ah, but you'll be gone, you won't stick around when it's shown you've just been needlessly hyperventilating.

I think it really comes down to basic cowardice and lack of character of some people. They hear anything that they think could be a threat, and they fall apart and start sobbing uncontrollably.

Me, I'm like Bring it, Show me what you got. Don't expect me to jump and get all excited until you do.

btw, if you want an explanation for Italy's high rates, almost all of Italy coronavirus deaths have been among those in the 80's and 90's, and Italy has the oldest average age of any European country. This is because all of the young Italians have been leaving to live elsewhere because their economy has been so bad for so long. Italy is a giant nursing home, the US is not. It's irrational to think we'll have the same rates that they have had.

Yes, in Italy, the average age of the fatalities was 80.

In NYC, remember the lawyer in critical condition with Corona? He infected his family and a neighbor or two. His wife recently posted on Facebook that they all recovered and the worst symptoms any of them experienced was a cough.

If you're old with underlying chronic medical conditions, particularly respiratory, this is dangerous. If you're otherwise healthy, it will be a nothingburger mostly. There will be a few outliers who get really sick, but it's basically a nothingburger.

And that's what the health authorities here are operating under. Protect the nursing homes and elderly with the most effort.

Smart. It will save on bullets. It's harder to target, but socialized medicine + a pandemic will kill more people more quickly than a goon squad can.

502 Reddit had an interesting thread about the Italian situation: Italy is a country of the old, so they are getting sick. Also, they are testing everyone now, so that is perhaps bumping up the numbers. One family lost a great uncle and had a few others sick, but lots of other people say they're fine.
On a trip the hospital in Milan did a great job with a guy from the tour who had chest pain. Fast ambo, got his tested and on his feet again. No. Italy is pretty Euro.

514 Income taxes were floated initially by a "Soak The Rich!" type of rhetoric, it would not have been enacted otherwise.

The first income tax rates were about 2 percent, levied on annual incomes exceeding about $600,000 in today's dollars.

Someone needs to ask Democrats why they are levying taxes on the working poor in the first place. Rates start at 15 per cent on income of what, 35,000? Something like that? What gives?

Let's decide we as a country, believe anyone making under 600k shouldn't owe any tax. They just borrow it from China anyway, and give it to say, Ukraine, or print the shit up, and add it to the 20 Trillion That Will Never Get Paid Back, until paying interest on the debt alone consumes the entire "budget", that nobody has bothered with for the last 20 years anyhoo.

517 Somebody made a very good point somewhere earlier this week that we had about 6 weeks of Chinese folks flying into the US before the ChiComs even revealed they had a viral outbreak, and before the US even had a chance to respond.

Posted by: Sharkman at March 10, 2020 05:16 PM (7ThNu)

In 1995 when I lived in Chicago there was a big heat wave and then the power went out city wide. 739 people died.

The next year there was another power failure during a very similar heat wave, but deaths were only a blip. Reasons include - most of the susceptible had died the first year, a better response to get people to cool places like malls, more public attention, and so on.

The initial stages are like the first year, but increasingly regions are able to combat it and deaths drop.

518 If the 0% tax rate passes, highly unlikely, but if it does the taxes are still owed. Payment is only being deferred so come tax time next year people will tend to be having to owe money instead of getting a refund. The Democrats will pounce on that blaming Trump as if he screwed the poor and working class and other nonsense. It's the same garbage they pulled when the tax cuts went into effect. People got smaller refunds than previous because the payroll tax was lowered. They kept more of their money during the year so overpaid less, hence the lower refund. Democrats framed it as Trump screwing them over.

520 I don't want to discount the effect of (a) better information regarding the Wuhan virus and (b) the president's confidence raising measures to support the economy, both generally and with respect to particularly ravaged industries.

But there is one other thing that was having an effect. Shareholders were also beginning to discount Bernie's failing campaign. I know that Tuesday's results weren't yet in, but there were signs everywhere that Bernie was expecting a bad night and Joe was expecting a good one. And that after a really bad Super Tuesday. It must comfort the markets to know that the chances of an inveterate apologist for Stalin and Castro becoming the Democrat nominee are waning.
