The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Speaking of pundits' predictions...

It's an intellectual struggle to look at pleasing predictions with the same jaundiced eye that we cast upon those predictions that are distasteful, but without that skepticism we will fall into the same morass of feel-good bullshit that plagues the Left.

But this guy is less breathless than most, so it is tempting to accept his predictions with a straight face.

Oil Prices

European countries have seen contractions in their economies, or declines in growth. China was under heavy economic pressure before the U.S. imposition of tariffs, and was facing instability in Hong Kong and Xinjiang. Russian President Vladimir Putin had imposed a radical new model for Russian governance and was obviously sensitive to weakness in oil prices, which could not return to the high prices that had previously fueled the Russian economy. The United States is the strongest economy in the world, partly because among the major economies it is least dependent on exports, which account for about 13 percent of GDP, with nearly half going to Canada and Mexico. What is happening is in outline what we expected: China is staggering, triggering a decline in oil prices, and the U.S. is slowing but not going into crisis.
One of the shortcomings of much of the economic writing I have seen in the past few days has been the lack of analysis of how lower energy prices benefit economies. UPS and FedEx and United Airlines and trucking and rail companies and power companies all benefit. Is that a net positive for the economy?

And...the hysteria that seems to have engulfed the entire world will eventually burn itself out for lack of fuel. How long will people be willing to tolerate idiotic and illogical decisions by unelected bureaucrats simply to avoid some vanishingly unlikely outcome? Closing schools? Why? They didn't close schools when 10% of the campus population was down with the flu, so why now? And the idiot older brother of the profoundly retarded Chris Cuomo is considering cancelling the St. Patrick's Day Parade in NYC.

It is a continuing source of amazement that these barely literate, barely educated, barely sentient people pontificate wildly about complex issues. How diseases are communicated, and at what rate, are immensely difficult questions. We can only look at the data at hand, and they show that corona virus is simply not the threat they want it to be.

Notice (as most of us have already) that any media or politicians' discussion of the virus devolves almost immediately into criticism of the Trump administration. They can't help themselves, and it is my most fervent wish that they will, as they have in the past, overplay this hand and push people toward president Trump.

+++++++++++++
Cheaper energy is usually a benefit, but there are downsides. US oil production is home to a lot of jobs that pay well and has been a major economic driver in several regions. US oil through fracking is pretty tight and requires a higher market price to be profitable. $20 oil won't return that profit and new drilling will likely peter out like what happened in that last oil slump - with lots of idle rigs, idle production lines making pipe, etc., idle workers - until prices go back up.

That will be damaging and will definitely hurt mainline growth while it goes on, and will put people out of work or on reduced hours. Cheaper energy isn't all rosy, but it has a lot of benefits. I don't know if the benefits offset the short-term to intermediate-term pain in the well-paid and highly-productive oil extraction industry, though. I suppose we will find out.

28 I particularly was amused when they tried to claim this was Trump's Chernobyl.

Chernobyl was a FAILURE of bureaucrat control. Both of the manner of operation of the reactor and their very existence (graphite regulated reactors were a no no anywhere else due to the flammability issue they were in use only because they were CHEAP).

It was also a man made disaster (that still may be for Covid) and wholly preventable. There's also not been the lies and obfuscation of the facts that existed about Chernobyl.

Then there's the complete destruction to this day of a large part of the countryside. This won't happen with Covid.

Then there's the fact that Obama did much worse and of course we know the Newsies covered his haloed butt for years after.

Every day the media prove they are traitors and idiots.

30 So a rational actor would, for long term planning purposes, now factor in the risk of a serious supply chain disruption caused by illness, when considering sourcing from Asia.

Once again, the American economy benefits long term.

The short term effects are still problematic. The world still largely relies on China for a significant percentage of its goods. Bobbleheads and such. So there will be shortages and losses in the near term.

China's gonna have a sore ass for a long time. If we keep the democrats out of power, we'll be fine.

All depends on how the story is framed, and what emotional buttons are pushed. People still tolerate the TSA, the Patriot Act, and the associated scores of useless personal intrusions designed to monitor the citizenry rather than prevent muslims from blowing up buildings - because the powers-that-be smartly played the patriotic heart-strings of the rubes.

That's why the West Coast is acting so quickly. This kind of mania plays well to that audience. It's an easy story to sell them. Those folks will tolerate this as long as the authority they approve of deems it necessary.

Speaking of general numbers, South Korea has a tiny population compared to the US , it is fairly homogeneous, and more accustomed to compliance with authority and social pressure. South Korean solutions simply won't work here.

Italy, on the other hand, has also simply consigned all their elderly to death under the heading of "triage". And some airlines are better at it than others. Southwest was able to mitigate a lot of the fuel run-up into the financial crisis through their exceptionally effective hedging. The downside is that they were paying more for fuel into the downswing, but the smoothing of their costs helped a lot.

I think all the big airlines have big oil hedges attached (or possibly it's the other direction, as you indicated - kind of like how GM is a pension fund with a car manufacturer attached to it).

There's not enough competitive pressure to get service stations to drop prices - and they've already paid for all of the gas in their storage tanks, so they're not about to sell it at a loss. As far as prices going up instantly, that's the downside of a capitalistic market - if everyone else raises prices at the same time, there's no cost and only profit for an individual owner to raise his prices. Although I think there are long term costs to using them, this is the logic behind short term price controls.

71 And some airlines are better at it than others.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 10, 2020 11:11 AM (I2dne)

Because the costs and revenues move together for the most part, smoothing only one part actually adds volatility. Which is why you see airlines make or lose massive amounts of money in a year from hedges.

74 afaik, frackers took on cheap debt to build out their operations, but they need ~$55 oil to be profitable. (some brag of profit at $40, not most. and the early/easiest resources may indeed be tapped out early, but tech keeps improving)

The economic boom since TARP would be hard to maintain in even normal times without all the monetary contrivances, and now the "Get Trump at Any Cost" globalist and DeepState war. I hope for a moderate slow down, then recovery through summer and fall to get Trump re-elected. There will be more financial contrivances to accomplish that, AND to start repatriating essential production (and to stop inviting China innto every nook and cranny to steal our tech, sheesh).

78 This is the time of the changeover in the oil refineries from winter to summer gas. (a stupid and wasteful bureaucratic exercise)

So that's some of the lack of response.

Also generally a business will respond quicker to higher costs than lower costs for good reason.

And they may see signs that the prices will be back up shortly so why bother.

As to it hurting the US. We can and are exporting our oil and many countries would rather owe the US than other countries and even some who follow the rules about Iran and other places as being under embargo.

Then too, I believe that fracking wells can be restarted easier than other wells. Some oil wells cannot be restarted after pumping has stopped for a while thus a total loss of the field.

Trains can make sense. You need population density. We don't have W. European population density. Where we have close to that density - the NE seaboard - we have high-speed rail. It's antiquated and inefficient because we aren't willing to tax the entire economy to sustain constant upgrades, but we do have it. We have it in the small slice of the country where it makes some sense to have it. But since this America, we also have private transportation.

Well let's look at the current situation. Where are revenues? Down. Where are costs down? Except, whoops, you're hedged against an increase in cost, so your hedges just lost you a of of money as business is down.

The goal of hedging should be more stability in earnings. If revenue and cost are typically correlated(as they will be in many cases), hedging only one part increases your volatility.

134 To recap what happened in 1986, for those who've forgotten or who weren't around at the time: Through the early 80's, US oil production was starting to soar after a decade of stagnation due to idiotic US government policies in the 70's, especially under Ford and Carter. World prices got soft, Saudi Arabia got pissed because they were trying to use OPEC to keep prices high, but everyone else in OPEC was cheating. So the Saudi's decided it was time to teach everyone a lesson, and they went to absolute all out production and drove world oil prices to $10 per barrel in a matter of months. Almost EVERY independent oil company went bankrupt that year or the next, Texas and Louisiana went into deep, deep, recessions, and the Soviet Union, having lost all of its income, collapsed 3 years later.

However, in 1987 the Saudi's finally figured out that in destroying all of their competitors, they had also wiped out their own financial base and now were in a critically dangerous position, so Sheikh Yamani (who orchestrated it all) was retired and they started working with other OPEC members again.

And so now, we are replaying that entire scenario. Russia refused to negotiate cuts, but it is the Saudi's who have now promised to go wide open on their production, in order to teach a lesson to everyone else. It's exactly what happened last time. by the numbers: the Saudi's have been producing 10 million BOPD recently, in the face of declining prices and declining demand, they are now promising to produce 12.3 million BOPD next month. And yes, they have the spare capacity to do it. Last time they did this, it sent oil all the way down to $10 per barrel.

135 Trains can make sense.

I've rode the Acela, it was a disaster. from Baltimore to NYC. we got to nyc 30 minutes faster than the regular train and that would have been about half the price.

We stopped at almost all of the same stations, had all the slowdowns, and barely got to top speed.

definitely not worth it. and not close to anywhere else in the world.

Every financial and legislative favor that could've been done for Amtrak has been done since 1976, and still the line can't profit. As for passing on the expense, the US taxpayer has been subsidizing that boondoggle, and the Class 1 freight carriers--who own 99.9% of the track that Amtrak uses, and doesn't have to pay CAPEX for--have only been able to do so because of the bill that Carter(!) signed deregulating the industry in 1980. Whenever I'd get a guy on the line who wanted to talk about "high-speed rail," I knew I was talking to a foamer or a flaming liberal, and would promptly hang up.

Not sure what you are referring to, but if it's Acela you aren't correct. Those trains travel the same old Northeast Express tracks and are subject to exactly the same speed limitations as slower trains. The big differences are the fancier cars and, since the Acela can run on the inside track, it makes fewer stops, at least between NYC and D.C. Between NYC and Boston, all trains are on one track.

True story (If you're eating lunch, pass this one up):

When NS and CSX split Conrail, the Conrail crews were, generally speaking, "lax." Long hair, earrings, etc. NS runs a very, very tight ship. A culture war was in the making.

Some--most?--of the NS locomotion didn't have flush toilets; they had a kind of baggie system. Hired ex-Conrail guys were sour about this. They were used to flush toilets. The began tying the baggies and pitching them out on the right-of-way between stations, rather than tying them and keeping them into the station.

NS management: That Is Not Acceptable.

NS started issuing baggies with employee numbers printed on them. "If we find yours on the ballast, There Will Be Consequences."

Conrail employee response: Baggies turned inside-out prior to use and disposal.

That's one of the things that annoys me to no end about the left - the sciencist cult.

Science requires no belief, only data. If the facts align with your hypothesis, the hypothesis is valid unless someone else presents a better explanation and backs it up with facts. (Unless you're a climate "scientist", then you change the facts to support the hypothesis and your broken computer models).

At no point is this something you need to or should emotionally invest in - it either works or it doesn't.

Science with a component of belief is just a cult where the priesthood wears labcoats.

Maybe the trains are technically capable of it, I don't honestly know, but they run on the same old tracks. Those tracks are canted for turns at long-established speeds. To run "high speed" like a French TCV or Japanese bullet trains we would need new tracks with turns canted for high speed. NIMBY prevents that from happening, even if Amtrak had money and enough market demand. Has anyone heard of that demand? Not me.

If you do not have the scientific and/or mathematical background to understand basic research, then you are essentially depending on authority to tell you what the reality is.

For example, apparently the death rate in Italy is driven by a) decision to triage which means denial of care to elderly, and b) Italy has one of the world's oldest population demographic. If you do not know a and b facts, then any assertion made by a random doctor on how we are all going to die based on Italy's experience leaves you unable to determine whether the good doctor's claim is valid or not.

A very fine collection of acoustics up in the $6k-per range, and many many nice electrics.

Plus, James has many unobtainable shirts.

He did a number of videos before becoming JamesJames, as Privettricker, which is when I first discovered him, seeking to learn how to do Lowell George's "Willin."

He always plays a track by the original artist alongside his guitar, and never ever breaks copyright, always using outtakes.

He has a few takes on Little Feat's "Dixie Chicken," and watching his fret hand's little finger dance on the board in that one is one of my great pleasures.

In my office of 300 people, though, running the break room for a glass of water involves touching a *lot* of shared surfaces. Her train had to stop and take on the Acela passengers, most of whom wound up standing in the aisles for the rest of their trip. Years ago we took the train that runs from Detroit to Chicago for a Christmas shopping trip with a bunch of friends. The cars were jankity, the service was slow and rude, overall a very bad experience.

After that I investigated leasing passenger and dining cars and found them to be extremely cheap. I contacted Amtrak and got the rates on having them haul 4 cars back and forth on that same line. Again, it was very affordable.

Then they asked what I was doing with the cars. When I told them I was going to sell tickets and take passengers back and forth, they said no way. It's illegal to compete with Amtrak.

338 I love working on a laptop from home. When I go into the office, I never get to talk to anyone. I'm stuck on the phone taking calls. When I'm home, I have the dogs in the office with me. I can take a break and take them outside or start cooking something for lunch. And I don't mind having a split shift, since it gives me time to get things done during the middle of the day.

I was the first person to get to work from home. Other folks have the option now but most chose to go into the office to work at least part of the week.

341 304, TJM, Casino Royale is basically our modern financial markets. They are hiring guys with advanced degrees and math chops to figure out how to arbitrage the markets and equally skilled people are figuring out how to bet large, have their bets hedged, and come out with a gain.

The major reason is that government deficits across the world are providing funny money to fund such and it is worsened by things like quantitative easing etc. Thus, the flight to own tangible assets and important services are inflating those prices--cough Calif. real estate for example, Harvard degrees, top flight medical care.

This
covered for and propped up the largest companies'
social-experimentation and SJW-wanking for a decade. They are confused
now when the Federal government does not step in and save their silly
asses from COVID or whatever the current boogeyman may be.
Now it seems that actual publicly-traded businesses may have to actually make good business decisions in order to survive.

The stock market is not the economy. This is something the left would spout day after day when it was going up.

Now, the very same people are claiming the stock market is the economy and we are all going to die.

Let's face it, the stock market was way overdue for a correction and the big players were just waiting for an excuse, any excuse to take profits and then along comes the beer virus and all of the other players started panicking.

The market will settle out in the next few weeks.

Them days are long, long gone. But, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away - the best pizza place around was a sole proprietorship called Rocky's - right across from the barge factory. The dinner crowd was actually quite nice - it was my go-to spot on date night. For $20, including tip, you got a large pizza with two salads and drinks.

They went upscale, moved to a spiffy new building right on the riverfront, and closed a couple years ago.

Ejection fraction, not injection fraction. It measures how well the heart is moving blood through itself.

My own fell off after my attack in June 17, but with a program of regular exercise, largely on a treadmill, I brought it back to normal within six months. I had minimal damage to my heart muscles, however.

357 What is odd is seeing the various price differences at different stations less than a mile away. Some stations around here are almost a dollar more than a nearby station. Even different stations of the same company have very different prices.

Posted by: josephistan at March 10, 2020 11:27 AM (Izzlo)

Stations usually make about .10 per gallon over what they pay for it. The high prices may be because they are still selling from their last fill up or they are going to increase their margin for a day or so.

++++++++++
The point isn't that hard to discern, I think.

- The Fed spent years goosing the market through low interest rates and QE (asset purchasing with newly-created money, assets primarily consisting of government securities and asset-backed securities, usually mortgages). This drove inflation, but not wages - so the inflation was locked up in the stock market.
- Many large organizations goosed employment because they had access to lots of capital through the stock market and bond markets. Much this employment boost may not have been needed positions but feel-good progressive positions in HR, overhiring to get women on board, etc.
- The serial bailouts and easy money of the past decade lowered the floor and subsequent actions are less meaningful.
- Everyone expects a juicy bailout for COVID-related losses, but it may not come and so now there's spooked people dumping shares.

I think it's more simple than that. If it becomes necessary to quarantine it will be impossible to go get more of one of the few things that makes life civilized (now there's Amazon, which might work if they're not shut down). There are 5 people in my house so a large pack only lasts about 2 weeks. That means I need to be at least one pack ahead at any given time. I know ours isn't the biggest family, so I'm not surprised at the buying.

372 367, I have taught online and also in person. Major difference is that top students continue to be top because they can manage themselves and do the work.

Average and worse students do about a letter grade worse in subject matter retention in an online setting. An in person class allows an instructor more feedback as to what content the average and worse students are not getting and some sense of shame in not doing the work and being questioned affects the results.

And yes, I taught one semester, the same material in an online versus an in person and could compare results.

During the days of MOOC hype, what happened is very few people actually completed those free courses offered by premium universities because most people view education as a credential rather than personal development.

380 375 ....,
Trump and most experienced epidemiologists that I suppose are giving him advise are relying on past experience with respiratory viruses. They don't like heat, sun, and humidity and thus when flu season ends, cov19 season will start to peter out.

Thus, a delaying action until Mother Nature brings that to the Northern Hemisphere.

The risk is a double dip via fall 2020 as happened in the Spanish Flu epidemic so we still need that time desperately to work on vaccines and anti-virals.
