Has the NYT's editorial decision to emphasize racism changed the way media thinks? [KT]

jeffersoncher.jpg

We have been doing periodic updates since the New York Times announced last August that they would be focusing on "racism" in their news coverage for the next two years, particularly as it related to Donald Trump. Closely associated with this announcement was the announcement of the debut of the historically inaccurate "1619 Project", AKA The Hate America Project.

Here's how Times editorial board member Mara Gay describes the project's mission: "In the days and weeks to come, we will publish essays demonstrating that nearly everything that has made America exceptional grew out of slavery."

QUESTION: Has the NYT's announcement that it would be emphasizing ideology in its news coverage affected how others in the mainstream media think about news stories?

On Thursday night, Mara Gay and MSNBC pretty face Brian Williams agreed that Mike Bloomberg could have given every American a million dollars instead of running for president. I know I'm piling on. But they deserve it.

This is a class warfare spin rather than an identity politics spin. But still, why did no one in that newsroom catch that monumental math error before it went on air? As Remy said,

i would watch a documentary about how this segment happened

Is this the End of Journalism?

How did they come to report on this tweet anyway? I hope that this is not true: Can it be possible that the original tweeter cannot be convinced that Bloomberg does not have 327 trillion dollars?

million.jpg

Back to the New York Times Editorial Board and NBC

A couple of weeks ago, Mara Gay blamed a broken water main in Harlem on President Trump. It's not just on TV that she makes remarkable errors. For an editor of America's Newspaper of Record.

And last July, after Ted Cruz filled Colin Kaepernick in on the context of part of a Frederick Douglass speech which Kaepernick had quoted,

Gay ranted at Cruz, "Frederick Douglass is an American hero, and his name has no business in your mouth."

Cruz had a ready answer, responding, "Let's see. You're on the editorial board of the NYT. You respond to any view you don't like, not with facts or reason, but w/ ad hominem attack. And you seem dismayed that I linked to Douglass's entire speech, so readers can judge for themselves."

She sounds like a real advocate of the First Amendment, doesn't she?

Maybe she should have included more information on Douglass in the 1619 Project, which apparently sort of skips over him.

At the end of January, on MSNBC, she also compared the behavior of Republicans during the impeachment proceedings to politicians defending the Jim Crow South. "I think we're in a very scary moment."

"I think you just spoke for metric tons of our viewers watching tonight after the day we've been through," host Brian Williams responded.

"Metric tons of our viewers." Interesting way to think of an audience.

The 1619 Project - more commentary

The key author of the 1619 Project continues to ignore or dismiss objections from historians.

On August 19 of last year I listened in stunned silence as Nikole Hannah-Jones, a reporter for the New York Times, repeated an idea that I had vigorously argued against with her fact-checker: that the patriots fought the American Revolution in large part to preserve slavery in North America. . . .

Weeks before, I had received an email from a New York Times research editor. Because I'm an historian of African American life and slavery, in New York, specifically, and the pre-Civil War era more generally, she wanted me to verify some statements for the project. At one point, she sent me this assertion: "One critical reason that the colonists declared their independence from Britain was because they wanted to protect the institution of slavery in the colonies, which had produced tremendous wealth. At the time there were growing calls to abolish slavery throughout the British Empire, which would have badly damaged the economies of colonies in both North and South."

I vigorously disputed the claim. Although slavery was certainly an issue in the American Revolution, the protection of slavery was not one of the main reasons the 13 Colonies went to war.

Almost a month before the piece above was published, the NYT defended the 1619 project for its journalistic rigor.

Powerline reported on the 1619 project and the oscars.

Also from Powerline, America's Revolutionary Mind.

David Horowitz, former lefty:

America is unique among nations in being founded on a set of ideas and values rather than having a shared "identity" based on "blood and soil." The founding of America during the revolutionary era 1776 - 1787 was based on principles that provide the sinews of our national identity. They are what create a unity out of the diverse peoples that have settled and occupied this country since its founding. They have been the inspirational force that enabled America to abolish slavery, become a global symbol of freedom, and provide the world's chief bulwark against global tyrannies.

It is this inspirational memory that the political left has set out to erase and destroy. The most disturbing manifestation of this sinister aggression is the so-called "1619 Project," the brainchild of a staff writer at The New York Times, named Nikole Hannah-Jones. It is supported by The Pulitzer Foundation, the Smithsonian Institution and the nation's cultural elite. Six months after its launch, the "1619 Project" Is already a curriculum in 3,500 public high schools in all 50 states. Given the extreme leftwing nature of the teacher unions and the public education establishment, while disturbing this is hardly surprising.

From the New York Post, What the 1619 Project aims to teach your kids.

What the 1619 Project got wrong about Lincoln.

In response to the 1619 Project, other prominent blacks have launched a 1776 project.

Shelby Steele, Robert Woodson, Carol Swain, Clarence Page, and John McWhorter are among the more prominent of the black contributors to this endeavor.

They emphasize a message of unity.

History, MLK Jr., Slavery

Also, the 1619 project on MLK day. And the prophetic voice of MLK.

Our Previous Posts triggered by the NYT's August Meeting:

January 18: Media Racism Update, contrasting the efforts of the Democrats to paint themselves as champions of the Constitution with the attacks on the Constitution in the NYT's 1619 Project. More on the 1619 Project's historical errors. Similarity to the communist goal of destroying memory.

Plus an interesting suggestion that it should be illegal to vote for Trump because he is racism personified. Uh-huh.

November 2: What would Frederick Douglass think? The 1619 Project wasn't much interested in Douglass. Reviews of the 1619 Project.

Also, Race-based lunacy in education NOT based in the 1619 Project. Western medicine is colonialism. Discussion of racial preferences in government.

September 28: September Racism and Slavery Update, with analyses of the emerging, ahistorical 1619 Project. Note: Captain John Smith was once a slave.

Plus an effort to pin a racism charge on a Trump appointee.

August 31: Dean Baquet's emergency meeting with his radical staff at the New York Times. This was where the editorial decision to focus on Donald Trump's racism was articulated. Oh. And then there was the 1619 Project.

Been thinking about Tennessee this week, and tornadoes. Is everyone OK?

Gibson plans to donate guitars to musicians whose instruments were lost or damaged in the storms. In 2017, President Trump highlighted Gibson for its production of American products. Sort of a switch from Obama's politically-motivated raid in 2011.

70 Howbeit, then, that Brooklyn gets a pass,

Letters to the Editor in the NY Post today were uniformly angry at Schumer including one woman originally from Brooklyn who wrote:

As a Jewish woman, born and bred in Brooklyn, I am furious at Schumer's excuse for his menacing threats to Supreme Court Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh....He claims Brooklynites "speak in strong language". That language does not describe mine at all."

I guess tomorrow they'll have the "It wasn't so bad" letters.

I've got a response to that nonsense, too. Africans lived in Africa since Lucy was in the 'hood at Olduvai Gorge. Europeans only colonized Africa (apart from a few cities on the coast) starting in 1880. At that point, no Europeans even knew what the interior of Africa was like ("Dr. Livingstone, I presume?").

So colonialism began in 1880, and ended around 1960. OK. Now account for the preceding 500,000 years.

I've been reading W.E.B. du Bois's book "The Negro," and frankly, it's kind of sad. To hear him tell it, Al Sharpton failed to give Negroes any credit for inventing anything.

118 Besides the math, there's this issue that I always see with the leftists. They think someone like Bloomberg, Bezos, Gates, etc, all have a vault like Scrooge McDuck filled with money that they could just take. The concept that their net worth is based on the value of a business is an alien concept to them. In fact, Bloomberg's net worth is a total guesstimate, since it's a private company. And even if a company like Amazon is technically valued at $100B+ on paper, that hardly means that Bezos could start selling all that stock without cratering the stock price.

Good point. That probably is their argument. It's kind of an intellectual "corruption of the blood" argument. So we should only take seriously the views of people who have never sinned? Kinda narrows down the field a bit, doesn't it?

How about the views of Karl Marx on race, hmmm? Or Che Guevara on race, and homosexuality? Shouldn't we therefore reject all leftist viewpoints?

I used to know a banjo player from up in NC who had a vintage (early 50s) Gibson Mastertone banjo. We were in the Gibson store in Opry Mills Mall and he was trying out their latest models and kept rejecting them. "Nope, the sound's not good enough." Finally, the exasperated salesman pulled down their top-of-the-line gold-plated model.

"Nope, still doesn't sound as good as mine."

So he goes and gets his out of the truck, and plays it for the store's staff and lets them play it some, too.

Their response?

"Yeah, we can't make anything that sounds like that anymore."

Allegedly the tone ring internal to that line of banjos was made from slices of surplus 5-inch gun barrels that were scrapped after WWII. Which would explain why the thing weighed about 25 pounds.

151 The NYT publishes a lot of racist horse hockey, because they themselves are racist. They are Democrats and Democrats gave us every racist law, every racist trope, every racist practice we in the USA have had or still have.
When you have to check a box about your racial make up, that was put there by a Democrat. If you see an old law about how it is illegal for a white to marry a black or vice versa, Democrats made those laws. Same with segregated schools, segregated anything. Democrats. The Democrats are the party of racism and slavery, still today.

I'm reasonably certain, if you apply for an internship in Big Media, you know you are going to be on your knees a lot. It's not a bug, it's a feature.

Norah O'Donnell has had to clean so much spooge out of her hair and eyelashes... and now she gets her netherhorn polished by some 20 year old interns.

It's how the business works. Everyone in it knows. And when an occasional Matt Lauer or Chris Mathews gets outed, it's like the unlucky wildebeest on the Serengeti, being pulled down by a pack of lions. The other wildebeest are spooked, not just by the carnage, but the fact they know it coulda been them.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at March 07, 2020 11:57 AM (YqDXo)

That's where one has to be careful, or you end up fighting on their turf. The "your founders are worse than ours" is a battle that concedes the point, that ideas must be tested first by the purity of who came up with them.

So it isn't necessary to point out that Marx was a filthy, anti-Semitic pig who treated everyone around him like his personal slaves. It only needs to be shown that his ideas were bunk, written 20 years after the problem he is addressing was already solved by capitalists who benefited from improved working conditions for their employees.

He was just flat out wrong. Period.

And they're not teaching that fact in schools... or the NY Slimes. They're teaching instead, you are bad because your founders were bad, so everything that came from them is bad. Including you. So off to the camps.

The logic in there is pure and simple. And it might work.

Curt Schilling touched on this briefly when talking about his pre-season conditioning program to be ready for the new season.

He believes (and so do I) that players are over-training and stressing their body to the point that it becomes easily breakable resulting in the ridiculous host of injuries over the season now. Players are getting gigantic and swole when they just need to be strong, flexible, and durable.

But everyone is being trained to swing up as hard as possible and try to get it over the fence, so they all want to be shredded and huge.

Which overstresses their body, joints, ligaments etc in the process and without being able to rely on steroids to heal faster, they break easily.

I think it's the other way around. Steroids don't help the ligaments and tendons and bone recover and adapt at the rate that the muscles and soft tissue does. IIRC, it takes six weeks for everything else to catch up to a week of steroid-assisted GAINZZ.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 07, 2020 12:54 PM (KZzsI)

I'm not going to speculate to much about steroid use, but I do think it's still being allowed, to some extent, in MLB.

I think guys like David Ortiz were grandfathered in, and everyone looked the other way while he took his victory lap in his last season.

So... steroids are in the mix somewhere, and yeah, the human body is kinda meant to be balanced, not have layers and layers of muscle piled on top of it.

People don't realize this, because there were journalists in the last half of the 20th century who glorified it, but baseball in the post-war period almost died. It got boring. Everyone swinging for the fences, and teams like the Yankees and Dodgers every season being poised to play in the World Series, while teams like the Indians and Browns and Senators and Pirates and Phillies and on and on, never being much more than Washington Generals to their Harlem Globetrotters.

We're pretty much there again, and MLB is gnashing its teeth over young folk not giving a damn about the game. So they're devising ways to whizbang and sexy up the damned thing.

Good luck, MLB. I'm basically out.

308 Steroids don't help the ligaments and tendons and bone recover and adapt at the rate that the muscles and soft tissue does.

Steroids primarily help your body heal more quickly from injury, so that helps make people like an aging Barry Bonds stay in the field despite the tremendous stress he put on himself day after day and in weight training.

311 Criminal gangs in Chile are taking advantage of NY's new bail reform laws.

They are sending gangs of thieves into NY to burglarize homes in affluent neighborhoods. They tell the crooks not to worry about getting caught, because they'll get out of jail in a few hours (non-violent criminals are not held, and no bail required), and then they just catch a plane and fly back to Chile.

In one NY county alone, home burglaries are up 75% since the new bail reforms law went into effect. Cops there say the increase is all due to the Chilean criminal gangs.

Incentives . . . how do they work?

341 Slavery had virtually nothing to do with the success of America, in fact, it can rightly be said, that it nearly destroyed and ended the American experiment.

Slavery was brought upon this continent by the British, Dutch and Spanish, and it lasted only 80 years after the creation of the United States.

And it was ended, not at the hands of blacks, rising up like Maximus to free themselves, but by the immense moral struggle of whites who gave blood that the black man would be free, of their Democrat slave holders.

Fuck that noise, I have absolutely no moral obligation to labor under the stain of slavery as I and my kind had no hand in instituting it and maintaining it, but as a Republican had the moral courage and dedication to ending it and advancing the cause of freeing the black man.

380 I think it's telling that the left wants us to think slavery was a net wealth creator. They need us to think that way given the kind of aristocratic government they prefer.

Everywhere that there has been relatively free societies next to a slave society, the slave society has been distinctly poor and backward compared to their relatively free neighbors.

From Sparta--it's where we got the word spartan to mean lacking comfort--through the American south and even into the present, slavery has impeded progress and wasted wealth.

Even after the civil war, the one industry in the south that improved the fastest was the one that had previously been most dependent on slave labor: cotton.

This is a good point- and one we do not hit on enough in the debate I think as an overall idea: when people are allowed to work for themselves and their own betterment (money, property), it oddly works out better for everyone- not just them.

=====

Fen -- That $25 is more than spent by the gas/time and, most of all, 'stuff' that we all add to our carts.

The most frugal method (for me) is once a month to the 'stuff mart' and weekly to regular local grocery.

386 When I look at my ancestors I'm pretty sure you'd have to go back to the Germanic tribes to find slaveholders. And there's just as much chance that I'd have a slave ancestor as a slaveholding ancestor.
Solid lineup of peasants and small merchants. I don't know but they have had cooks or maids.

388 when people are allowed to work for themselves and their own betterment (money, property), it oddly works out better for everyone- not just them.

For all their descent into identity politics and social justice, the Democratic Party doesn't seem to have changed much since Lincoln's time. They still think slavery is a positive force.

You may turn over everything in the Democratic policy from beginning to end, whether in the shape it takes on the statute-book, in the shape it takes in the Dred Scott decision, in the shape it takes in conversation, or the shape it takes in short maxim-like arguments--it everywhere carefully excludes the idea that there is anything wrong in it.--stuff Abraham Lincoln Really Did Say, Debates Volume

389 Redundant, but the level of ignorance and lack of analytical capacity it takes to "think" that slavery is a system that creates wealth compared to free economies, or that *anything* positive or distinctive about the US relates in any way to slavery, is kind of breath-taking.

Everyone to their own. If I had to choose between a microwave or a quality countertop oven, it'd be no contest. But I can't live without baked goods.

401 the cost of presidential golf trips

--

My first thought was similar to why the "dead in Iraq" numbers stopped being reported, but then I realized I probably wouldn't have any problem with Obama golfing if he had simultaneously been moving jobs back to the US and otherwise creating an environment where taxpayers were earning an extra gajillion dollars every year.

Being a lazy bastard AND a f*ck up while wasting money avoiding work was apparently the problem.
