Rubens 4evangelists.jpg

The Four Evangelists
Sir Peter Paul Rubens

In this work, symbolism, body language, and composition are important. Peter Paul Rubens is depicting the writing of the Four Gospels as a meeting between mortal writers and heavenly inspiration. From left to right, the writers are Luke, Matthew, Mark and John. They are each represented by their symbols that, in art, also sometimes act as their genii: an ox, a man (here an angel), a lion, and an eagle respectively.

This work is divided into two sections. The left three-fourths contains the first three writers, Matthew, Mark and Luke. They are gathered around a table and listen intently to the angel as he tells them what to write. Since the angel is Matthew’s genius, he is the one shown writing. Mark just listens. According to scholars, Mark may have been the first Gospel written. If that was believed in Rubens’ time, then it’s not surprising that Mark is pictured leaning on closed books. His part is finished. His genius is asleep, tired from the efforts. Mark seems interested in what the angel is saying because he may be hearing new information—information that is now going into Matthew’s Book.

Luke looks at what Matthew is writing. There is no book or ink well in front of him. His ox is awake. The author is waiting his turn. Luke is holding a scroll in his left hand, not a book like the others. This might be a quick reference to the Hebrew Testament. Each of the Gospels presents different aspects of Jesus. Luke and Matthew present the genealogy of Christ, but where Matthew’s goes forward from Adam, Luke’s goes backwards from Joseph. The scroll is behind Luke and is the older literary medium, so I think it might represent the older section of the Bible, but I really don’t know for sure.
Between Mark and John, Rubens has placed a virtual dividing line. John is very obviously set apart from the others. His posture is different—where the other three are sitting and slouched over, John is standing straight up. He is not paying attention to the angel. Instead his head is tilted back, looking up at the eagle. The bird was behind the curtain and only revealed when it was thrown back, and it is possible that only John can see it. This may represent a special knowledge—a “revelation.” His book is also closed. He has to wait for his turn at the writing station.

The division of the authors is quite interesting because they are divided in the same way as many Biblical scholars divide the Gospels—the three Synoptics and John. In theory, Mark was the first Gospel to be written and then Matthew and Mark borrowed and expanded from him. John’s Book is supposed to be completely original ideas. I don’t know if this theory was around in Rubens’ day, but this painting seems to say so to me.

Color also divides the work. The Three are draped in black or dark gray cloth. Matthew is dressed completely in black so his face and hands, and the hand of the angel, stand out. John is the only one in white. This may represent his special status among the Apostles. He was one of Jesus’ inner circle of Disciples with Peter and James. He was called The Beloved Disciple because he was the closest to Jesus. He witnessed the Transfiguration, the Crucifixion, and the Ascension; was tasked with taking care of Mary; and was privy to the final revelation of Jesus Christ.

Matthew’s black garment occupies the exact center of the painting. This “void” is surrounded by the arms and heads of Matthew, Mark and the angel. The Evangelists’ eyes stare intently at the angel. Being in the center of the work, my eyes tended to go there first. Because they are looking at something, my eyes follow theirs. After hitting the angel’s face, I then follow the line of his pointing arm down to the Book, the real focus of the painting. So then, this painting is about the Christian belief that the Bible is “God-breathed”, that the human authors were told what to write by the Holy Spirit. Rubens then focuses this idea. Rubens shows us the biography of Jesus being written, the central figure of the Christian Bible. This work is about one of the most fundamental teachings of Christianity: the divine origins of the Bible.

And it's odd that only John of the men is clean-shaven. In Jesus' time, there were certainly barbers, sharp knives, and oil if not soap, but the combination might not have been available to common people as easily as today. It's understandable that men would grow beards as a matter of course. Still, it makes John stand out.

I toured the Sistine Chapel while it was under renovation. The unrestored portion looks like we now expect old religiously-themed art to look, dark and murky. The restored part almost looked like a comic strip by comparison. I've seen the completed job now in pictures, and it's definitely an improvement, but it was a really jarring contrast and required a mental recalibration of what it "should" look like.

Ann Wroe's biography of Pilate is interesting, if necessarily speculative, reading. Other scholarship has come out that indicates Pilate wasn't the star-crossed accomplice, but that he was actually a shrewd, hard, capable governor whose hand wouldn't have been forced much, and who undertook Christ's execution somewhat more gamely than has been previously depicted.
The Wroe bio is a pretty interesting read.

John will almost always be depicted as beardless (there are exceptions). He was thought to be the youngest of the Twelve. He lived into the AD 90s, so it's thought he was a young man during Jesus ministry. The easiest way to show this is without a beard as it makes him look very young. In a lot of art, it can make him look female. This is why some people think that's Mary Magdalene sitting next to Jesus in Leonardo's "Last Supper". It's not. That's John the Beloved.

There is probably something to that, actually. Not the wishcasting part, but the "Biden did well yesterday" part.

Sanders is an outright expropriating communist. As he continues to win primaries, the odds of his nomination increase. As the odds of his nomination increase, the odds of his election to the presidency increase. There is nothing more destructive to the current business environment than the specter of a Sanders administration. Coronavirus, the debt load, the medical overhang, environmental regulation - all of it is chump change compared to a communist with a mandate and big plans.

So in some respects, Biden's surge is probably generally helpful for a jittery market because his surge reduces the odds of the worst-case scenario. He is by no means a best-case (or even a mediocre-case) scenario, but he is so much better than the guaranteed destruction that Sanders will bring that there may well be some sighs of relief on the Street.

I haven't seen anyone "absolve" Pilate of anything. I'm certainly not; in fact, my post suggested that he took rather more enthusiastically to the job than many allow.

How about I let you know when I find "that guy" who claims with anything approaching historical certitude to have heard Pilate say anything, "good person doing a job" or otherwise.

180 John will almost always be depicted as beardless (there are exceptions).

If he lived into the 90s and was, say, 20 when Jesus was crucified in about AD 30, that gave him a good long run for those days, about age 80. Naturally, though, it was infant mortality and violence that got you in those days. If you survived that, you'd probably sand a good chance of making it to 80, even then.

Well, Pilate is a guy who claimed that he was a good person just doing his job.

He said:

When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

Sure, it was self-serving. And also - Pilate ordering Jesus' crucifixion was part of God's plan.

So that's where it comes from.

If you made it out of childhood, you had a very good shot of making it a goodly while. The life expectancy at birth was probably the early forties, but life expectancy at age 12 was probably the mid sixties.

Yeah, that construction looks like "verde" or "verdant." Based on that guess and "ova" it is fairly easy to fill in the blank on "perna" though I had no idea (didn't know "virent" either, but it looks like a cognate to romance words for "green"). 326 243 Fun fact: Although many think Matthew's symbol is an
angel, it's really a winged man. All the genii are winged, although
Rubens eliminates them on the ox and lion because he can. They are
borrowed from Ezekiel's (?) vision of the throne of heaven and the four
beasts that guard the Throne of God. These symbols are seen everywhere
in Mesopotamia and Egypt. They represent the four major classifications
of animals (from an ancient POV): Ox-domesticated beasts, Lion-wild
beasts, eagle-flying animals, Man. These are also the dominant animals
of these groups--the "kings" of the beasts, and Man is king of them all.

Why does God need a guard?
Posted by: Mr. Scott (Formerly GWS) at March 04, 2020 10:14 AM (JUOKG)

It's allegory. In Ezekiel's vision, God is trying to make visible something no human can envision nor understand. People were/are used to kings/emperors having guards around their thrones, so God showed it that way. He is trying to relate to finite humanity. He uses what we are familiar with. God used Mesopotamian imagery A LOT in the Hebrew Testament. It's why Jesus's parables work so well, too.

I have always believed that Bloomberg was never in to be competitive for President. Not competing in the first 4 contests was a technique. Not a good one.

The zillions of dollars he spent filled the coffers of the Dem-Media Industrial complex so they can coast through the next 8 months. Conveniently bypassing any campaign finance rules.

+++++++++++
Yes, I noticed this, too. There is syntactic ambiguity in the original title. It can be inferred as "Green eggs and (regular) ham" or as "Green eggs and (green) ham."

The Jeopardy question writers clearly interpreted it as the latter. I don't know that this is wrong because the source material is ambiguous.

This reminds me of a practice question for the CO standardized tests that I got wrong and I fought the teacher on it. The question was to rewrite the statement properly.
Statement: "Joe set the glass down on the table, breaking it."
Answers:
A. "Joe set the glass down on the table, breaking the table."
B. "Joe set the glass down on the table, breaking the glass."
C. "Joe set the glass down on the table, and it broke."
D. {something clearly wrong}

I chose "C" and got the answer wrong. When I asked why, the teacher told me that the point of the question was that the original statement was ambiguous, and so it had to be disambiguated and that either "A" *or* "B" would be considered correct. I argued that without adequate context, you couldn't assert which one was correct, and that the only to ensure the original meaning in its wider context was retained was to pick an equally ambiguous alternative, so long as it was correct. He said that he agreed with me, but that was not how the test was scored and I should just answer the question correctly to get my points.

So I did, but I hated it to the point that I still remember it.

And this is how you end up with "Green Eggs and Green Ham."

We were just talking about that yesterday. It would be nice if there was a law that says you only pay schools taxes when you have kids in school.

Once they are all out of school or you have no kids, then you don't pay school taxes.

429 377 Car question. Would it be worth it to invest in a reusable engine filter and cabin filter as opposed to replacing them every so many miles?
Posted by: Augustine at March 04, 2020 10:14 AM (BDZWU)

My gut feeling is no. Go with the disposable paper elements.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 04, 2020 10:28 AM (KL3tU)

MATH ALERT

You're supposed to change your filter between 15 and 30k miles. A disposable one costs what, about $15 and the reusable ones are like $50?

So if you're really on top of thing and do it promptly. So you break even on the fourth replacement, so if you expect to get 60,000 more miles out of the car, you come out ahead by getting the reusable one. Or if you're lazy and only replace very 30k miles, you would only break even after 120,000 miles.

So if you got your car new and you're just replacing the filter, it's probably worth it, if you've had the car for a while, probably not.

From an ROI perspective disposable is the way to go.

I don't know that they make reusable cabin filters but I am sure they do.

For engine air filters the claim from a K and N or Amsoil filter is that it also improves performance. Yes, a little.

Still ROI goes to disposable.

We were just talking about that yesterday. It would be nice if there was a law that says you only pay schools taxes when you have kids in school.

Once they are all out of school or you have no kids, then you don't pay school taxes.

My parents live in a 55+ community, over a thousand homes. Not a single one of those households has a child in the local schools but 1/3 of their very high taxes goes to the schools. They can't even use the bs reason of "the schools influence your property values", it's a gated age restricted community.

11 Wouldn't the Gospel be less compelling if the four collaborated on the project as a group? A kind of witness tampering if you will?
Posted by: Muldoon

When I sat down to read the Big Four for myself as an adult (well, over 1, I knew a lot (not as much as I do today, but a lot) about the origins of the four gospels, and scholarship about them, that each gospel had a different origin, motive, perspective, and (the synopticalism notwithstanding) a different story to tell.

What amazed me was that -- despite potentially fallible human recollections, despite possible apocryphal intrusions, translation and doctrinal confusions, and cultural misinterpretations -- these disparate tracts persuaded me once and apparently forever that Jesus did live, that he did say and do pretty much everything attributed to him in the Gospels. Suddenly, that guy I'd heard about in the pulpit stories and always kinda liked became a full-blown reality in my life.

I remember two rather funny thoughts I had when I finished John: why didn't anyone tell me about this (hahaha), and, oh, now I see why this has been the centerpiece of civilization (duh). Jesus had me hooked.

I was left to believe either that the guy was some kind of amazing theological idiot savant, or he was the real deal, the Son of God incarnate, whatever that meant! Actually, having been convinced, it wasn't a choice. I believe.

Thank you to the tax collector, young feller, intrepid reporter, and beloved apostle.

537 There is a LOT of analysis that says Biden won among late-deciding voters.

This is clearly true because his outcomes were way out of sync with the polls. Well beyond the polls are crap range.

This points out a huge weakness - his voters weren't sold on him, they just sort of said, well, he isn't a socialist, I guess, or, he was part of that nice Obama's administration. They were not convinced that he was the best guy to beat Trump because they did not decide until the last couple of days.

I think that decisions made in haste are often regretted.

They have to backfill all these positive things about him to justify their hasty decision.

School operating costs should be paid out of the State's general revenue fund, since it's in the interest of the population in general that kids have schooling.

School buildings, and capital additions/repairs, though, should come out of property taxes, as it can be argued that a nice school building nearby enhances the resale value of one's home.

For some modern cars, like mine, getting the bloody things out of their housings can be an energy sink. I cannot open the engine air filter housing in my '16 Buick. I can see where things fasten; I've changed filters in all my other cars for 40 years; I've watched innumerable YouTube videos. Still can't get it loose.

The car is only at 39K miles. I can have the thing replaced at the next oil change. But it's annoying, that GM and other manufacturers construct their cars so that only "experts" can work on them.

Run for office. I think campaigns are allowed to finance other campaigns much more generously. So if you run and fill up your coffers (no limit on self-funding), execute a desultory campaign and drop out early with a well-funded war chest, I think you can donate as much as you want to other campaigns, so long as it comes from your campaign coffers and not from your personal bank account.

Or do I have that wrong? The campaign-to-campaign funding is a bit murky for me.

Granted, to paraphrase Winston Wolf, we shouldn't be punching each other's babies in the dicks just yet, but remember that Biden is not yet (nor not necessarily) the nominee. Trump has only been dancing around the ring, throwing jabs here and there as a series of tomato cans come by.

Once Joe is the nominee, Trump now has one person to go full Muhammad Ali on. Biden is barely sentient in his own party - once he has to deal with Trump, he'll be reduced to silly trivialities like "my IQ is bigger than yours" or "let's do pushups, man," and Trump will be able to say, "do you really want this retard's finger on the button?"

I do think Trump has a hard road ahead, and I don not count out MFM lies and Democrat cheating, but Gropey Joe is going to feel like a trailer park that just had a tornado rip through it by the time Trump is done with that nickelfucker.

I think the 100-comment rule should have one comment added to it for every comment CBD hammers. Like, today would be a 104-comment rule or so.

I also think when comments are replaced by cobs, the text should be in red <span style="color:red;"> - or pink. Depending.

Pilate caved to political pressures to execute an innocent man, so yes, he was certainly complicit. He had a choice. Washing his hands after rendering the verdict was an empty gesture and he knew it. And now his name is synonymous with injustice forever, and he knows that, too.

He may be terrible, but so was Hillary and she came within 150,000 votes.

I just don't think Biden's gaffes are enough to automatically throw the election.
Posted by: Blago

This, sadly. Biden, with the full cooperation of the press, (which will cover up any gaffes) will blather on about about his "blue collar roots" and how moderate he is - I could see Michigan and Wisconsin flipping, add in voter fraud and you could flip Pennsylvania. And no way we win back the House, Sanders has to be the nominee in order to scare wine moms back into voting GOP.

If Pilate was a man of mature years in AD 30, maybe age 40, he would have had to convert to this new religion pretty early in its run, say, by the time of Saul/Paul and Nero. Christianity was still a minor player in the Roman religion stakes at that time.

709 Soon politics will evolve far enough that the charade of principled office-seekers who are merely aided by campaign contributions are replaced by surrogates who are wholly owned properties unashamed of admitting so.
Joe will have to do his campaign appearances with a Bloomberg LLC cap on. Eventually, they won't even wear suits; they'll wear jumpers like sports car drivers, covered with the brands and patches of their paymasters.
Posted by: Zod at March 04, 2020 10:57 AM (qXNVo)

Any politician who talks about principles should be automatically disqualified and prosecuted for fraud.

The real question each and every one needs to be asked is "why are you seeking power, and what do you intend to do with it?" or perhaps just "what's your angle?"

What is more important than why. Good things done for the wrong reason are still good. Bad things done for the right reason are no less disastrous.

If you can't honestly reveal your plan without hiding behind platitudes and false piety, you should never be allowed anywhere near power.

Only new car I ever bought was a Nissan Maxima in '04. a couple years later, the dash lights went full bright and the dimmer stopped working. I thought nothing of it until one night I was driving with the family and a guy came up beside me and said "Your tail lights are out, but your break lights work."

I found there was a hidden fuse panel under some pinned down plastic panels and there was a 14 amp fuse blown (should've been higher due to the load). The dealership had been charging owners $200+ dollars for troubleshooting and part replacement.

The Owners Manual didn't list that fuse panel anywhere.

I'll never own another Nissan. The car was largely a lemon along with that bullshit.

721 Soon politics will evolve far enough that the charade of principled office-seekers who are merely aided by campaign contributions are replaced by surrogates who are wholly owned properties unashamed of admitting so.
Joe will have to do his campaign appearances with a Bloomberg LLC cap on. Eventually, they won't even wear suits; they'll wear jumpers like sports car drivers, covered with the brands and patches of their paymasters.

722 I wonder if there is a dementia line that Biden could cross that the media can't ignore.
I'm sure the answer is no, but still.
What if he walked onto the stage naked from the waist down?
What if he insists he is campaigning against Richard Nixon?

726 Pilate was rumored to have converted to Christianity later in his life, and in some circles he was considered to have venerated, because without him, there was no cruxifixion, or resurrection.

------
There is a medieval mystery play about Pilate that turns into screwball comedy. Pilate dies at the beginning and his bloated blackened smelly twisted corpse is causing crop failures, well poisonings, etc., and the protagonists are trying to figure out how to dispose of it without causing more mayhem. Never let it be said that our ancestors lacked for humor.

I wouldn't go that far. Bernie would have almost assured a loss but it's still very possible with Biden, just not as possible as with Bernie. Everything is based on turnout and we know by the primary results that Trump's voters are motivated. It's going to come down to how many feel bothered to show up for Biden after Trump goes at him with a lead pipe and a blowtorch.

732 Okay, I know, no math.

I have read that 38% of delegates would have been pledged by the end of ST.

There are 3980 delegates (pledged), and that means 1991 to win an absolute majority in first ballot.

If 38% are supposed to have been awarded, that would be some 1512 total among all candidates. However, I see only 963 awarded. I know there are some still to be awarded but not 550.

Still, the current leader is Biden - he has 453. Presuming that the amount outstanding is minimal, he has to win 1438 out of the next 2837 delegates.

Delegates are proportionally awarded, so that means he is going to have to win only a little more than 50% in each of the next contests. In a 2 man race, that is easier to do.

734 what a beautiful discussion of a wonderful painting. The Gospel authors are a fabulous subject for a painter and it's so interesting to see how different artists pictured the nature of the Divine inspiration. Caravaggio had two different versions, with one b being literally "hands on." There's one (I don't recall the artist) that shows a angel whispering in the ear of St. John on Patmos.
Art, especially narrative art like this, is a fount of wonder. My life is richer for becoming interested in it.

736 In the painting, Mark is shirtless. Could you tell us why he would have been painted that way?
Posted by: NavyMom at March 04, 2020 10:45 AM (EYMQq)

Two possible reasons off the top of my head...

1: Classicism.
B: Rubens is showing off his skill at male anatomy.

Perhaps a little of both?

I like the idea of an artist painter being kind of a show off.
