"Woke" Is Nothing More Than A Rejection Of 2,500 Years Of Western Philosophy

This is a common theme in the posts and comments around here, but it bears repeating and repeating and repeating, because it really is an existential danger to Western civilization. You know; the best one yet devised.

It is a careful rejection of many things that have made us great, among them the Scientific Method, rational analysis, and, I think most of all, the simple skill of observation.

Woke Irrationality Is Undermining Civilization

It's a good article, worth reading in its entirety, but this passage encapsulates so much of what is wrong with our current culture. Here is one of the preeminent universities in the country consciously rejecting its own scholarship.

A variation on these ponderous themes is the kind of thing we recently encountered in an article published by Stanford University’s news service that seems a perfect example of largely symbolic idealism: “simple, but meaningful steps [people on campus] can take to reduce their environmental footprint.” Those steps consist of actions like converting lights to LEDs, updating aerators to save water, and reducing the use of disposable packaging and utensils.

Those actions are aimed at addressing climate change at the micro level, and there’s nothing wrong with them, to be sure. Certainly, small contributions can make a difference if they’re aggregated across a large population. But at Stanford, they seem to be missing the forest for the trees. At the same time the university encourages those baby steps, it embraces and encourages organic farming, which is wasteful of water and arable land. The university’s organic gardens prohibit the cultivation of plants crafted with modern genetic engineering technologies (including a groundbreaking one that was co-invented by a Stanford professor), and, incredibly, invited Vandana Shiva, an aggressively anti-science and anti-technology activist, to lecture to its students. Her rejection of modern agricultural technologies and encouragement of primitive farming methods in poor countries leads to low yields, vulnerability to pests and diseases, under-nutrition, and diminished longevity.

The dissonance between Stanford’s ostensible priorities—preeminence in science and technological innovation, and environmental stewardship—and its actions is a prime example of the schizophrenia of much of America’s liberal intelligentsia.

It's a theme that I have hammered in the Food Thread; caring for the environment and animal welfare are laudable ends, but when pursuit of those ends jeopardizes the health, and in some cases the lives of human beings, then those objectives must be subordinated to the larger and more important goal of the improvement in the human condition. Anything less is a rejection of the primacy of man, which of course is one of the points of Woke culture!

23 Willowed from the Book thread...and edited for more as my blood pressure rising caused me to forget a point...

I'm old enough to recall 2008, when Obama, encouraging his supporters in a Columbia, Mo campaign event saying '...we are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America.'

Also fresh in my memory is the hubris from the then WH 'occupant' that prolonged the Great recession, pushed unemployment to new heights--only to be exceeded by the spike in US debt. Wasted spending on alternative energy (Solyndra), cash for clunkers , not to mention the government-grab of health insurance. Fundamentally transformed enough so the Obama's added to their $1.65 million (2005) Chicago home, a 2017 home purchase in DC at $8.1 million and recently a 29 ac. Martha's Vineyard Estate for $11.75 million (reduced from over 14 million!). No wonder Bernie needs 3 homes-- keeping up with the Joneses/Obamas. Smells alot like a 'banana republic' socialism to me.

I've seen enough of this. Now, new bottles of snake-oil (cancelling student loans, M4A {O-care deux?}, NGD, gun control) are up for sale by Bernie and AOC (& Warren). But, we should trust Bernie to get socialism right this time- not me.

Fool me once, shame on you, Fool me twice...

27 [Tried to quote the last paragraph, mu.nu won't accept it... you can read it above yourself]

In addition to misusing the word "schizophrenia," I think the article rather misses the point by a mile.

There is nothing incongruent between the "woke" culture, and the Gospel of Scientism. To say that places like Stanford are chock full of the historical achievements of science, is not the same as saying what currently passes for science is anything like that.

Indeed, I would be curious to know what the so-called scientists at Stanford are working on, when it comes to agriculture and all that. I'm assuming it's overrun with globall warmening tripe, and not at all fixed on making agriculture more workable for humans.

Because the overarching theme of all of this, the communist push that underlies it all... we humans are the problem, and they want fewer of us. They want to see a world without humanity polluting the precious planet, and they're pretty darned sure that whatever they can do to kill off as many of us as possible, that's the greater good.

Recycling is a net money loser. Most of what we dutifully "recycle"
winds up in the landfills anyways. I have a box of dead batteries...it's
not easy to find anyone who will take them much less actually recycle
them. There were some recent articles about this. Now that we are all
mostly trained to recycle they want to keep us trained so they won't
stop recycling programs even though there is little actual recycling
going on.

Posted by: lin-duh at February 23, 2020 12:52 PM (WUuhi)

It is a proven fact that the recycling of residential waste has always been a money making racket. Here in or county that went to a program where you had to separate trash into different bins at the dump for recycling. If you hung around the dump and waited for a truck to some by to collect it the only thing that separate trucks came for was steel and aluminum cans. Everything else went into one truck and straight to the dump.

The citizens after a while got tired of it and the "special bags" we had to buy for household garbage. The county finally said OK, we will get rid of it but we will have to raise taxes to make up for the "loss of revenue". That was the the admision that the whole thing was a fraud.

92 >>I was reading an article the other that presented data showing boomers
as a generation and people who are global warming skeptics recycled more
of their waste than the younger and/or "woker" counterparts.

I would imagine that older generations - Boomers, Gen X - in general are less inclined to use disposable items, where possible, simply because these single use habits, such as buying your morning coffee, buying bottled water weren't always the norm. As things have gotten more convenient, they've often gotten more wasteful/generate more trash.

And then there's so many items today that are built to be obsolete sooner - buying a new phone every year, upgrading/replacing appliances more often - this generates more waste/trash, too. If younger generations have been trained to upgrade more frequently, then they are generating more waste.

What's really really funny is, people in the suburbs gnashing their teeth at the thought of a large landmass, some distance away from any development, with grass and trees growing meekly... wind whistling through... all on top of a heap of waste matter.

So where do you think they buried all that stuff BEFORE we came up with landfills? Hmmm???

That's right, folks, right there under you freakin' suburban house. You wouldn't even have to dig down that far (not that you're allowed to dig on your own property, but still...), that's where it is. Everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink, when the city folk wanted to get rid of it, they went a few miles out of town, and dumped it.

I have 1/2 a garage full of stuff I haven't unpacked from moving. Thankfully, the city wide "Spring Cleanup" starts the first week in April. Need to get it cleaned out before then. I actually found my sewing machine today. So, it's a start.

You should've asked; I'd have lent you mine. The first and last thing I made with it was... a sewing machine dustcover. Which has been on it ever since.

I can't remember why I got it, except that I didn't have one, and it seemed like a useful thing to have around.

149 A few nights ago Tucker Carlson had a guest on who wrote a book about society. I wasn't really paying attention so I don't know who the guest was or what book he wrote, but the book was about china and how they are shaping our behavior. What I did hear, however, was that China realized that America feels badly about our slavery history, so they decided to exploit our guilt and cause racial friction. It makes sense, because BO ( before Obama),I don't remember racial tensions being so pronounced.

152 "The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it."

This is pretty much the issue. Those who remember actual tough times, those who built America, those who invented the technology to improve lives of everyone across the world that everyone takes for granted... are all dying or have died.

Those who are still around who remember or at least learned to appreciate and have proper perspective... are simply dismissed by ignorant millennials with "ok, boomer".

A question that would be interesting to hear millennials answer: "Can you name an invention you use that came from a socialist/communist country?"

The Left controls the schools from K-12 and to the universities and makes sure history is not taught. So instead of people realizing that the last 100 years have seen some of the most amazing technological advancements in human history to improve the lives of every person on the planet, kids and teens and young adults today are brainwashed to believe that humans are evil and we're all somehow worse off than we were in the past.

And it doesn't even matter if the majority of people are waking up to the fact that "global warming" and "climate change" are lies. All it takes for any movement to succeed is a few radical people in the right positions of power and influence.

It's depressing.

157 I always refer to the Law of Conservation. It's states simply, that energy cannot be created nor destroyed.

This law applies not only to matter and the physical world, but helps explain why "shortcuts" in life have a cost, and why solutions to certain problems invariably lead to other problems. It's a good lesson to remember in business. I refer to it often. There is no "get rich quick". No legal scheme to squeeze energy out of something where energy has not first been put in.

If you have 7 billion people creating and consuming, it's going to leave a "footprint". This is unavoidable. And whatever you come up with to deal with that footprint - multiplied by 7 billion, it's going to leave a footprint of its own. To deny this is to deny basic reality.

The marxist envirolunatics understand this law, which is why their arguments are all lies and obfuscation. They plan to "get rich quick" but off of breakin your damn back.

In the end they are merely denying the right of human existence. If they throw us all in gulags and serve only gruel, it will have a very minimum "footprint". If only the elite 10,000 or so people in the world live like kings, it will have zero impact as long as the other 7 billion are locked in a cage. That's their logical conclusion. There can be no other.

159 Here in Northern VA, two counties and the city of Alexandria have stopped curbside glass recycling in favor of people taking the glass themselves to designated bins, otherwise they are told to just put the glass in the trash. The recycled glass is being used for road projects. More glass is being recycled now than when curbside was available, and one big reason is that cross-contamination from things like plastic grocery bags, pizza boxes, etc is largely gone.

Posted by: Blonde Morticia at February 23, 2020 01:41 PM (G51Gf)

I was going to say they are ignorant, but I think that misses the mark. I think the big problem overall is insulation- mental, financial and emotional insulation from bad choices.

BurtTC about how his friend was injured by the very mild rejection of her cherished views. This is a common thing on the right: we have long defaulted to 'You do whatever the hell you want, leave me to do what I want.' So we insulate them from having to hear contrary views (not our intent, but that is how it works out) to the point that they do not ever have to examine them in any substantive way and when they do encounter any sort of contrary view, they have no way to respond except emotionally- they are hurt.

The principle extends to the Laboratories of Democracy, the States. The idea being, two states. Each starting out even. State A pursues one set of policies. State B pursues another set. State A fails miserably. State B prospers. The idea is that the people in State B will be happy and order more of the same. State A's people are supposed to say 'Hey, this is not working, let's try something else.' This does not happen. Instead, people from state A move to state B, state A continues to fail miserably and people from State A now in state B start voting for the same policies that wrecked state A. They are insulated from the bad choices they made in state A and since they never get a confrontation of how and why state A fails, they continue to make the same bad choices.

Business. A company that forgets that their primary goal is to provide a good enough product that people want to buy. They instead pursue stupid crap and let the company become overburdened with bureaucrats. Company fails. They ask for a bailout (instead of going out of business to serve as a warning to other business or, get this, changing their practices.) We give them a bail out. We insulate them from their bad choices.

The Live and Let live ethic has been a tremendous failure because we have not left people to suffer the results of their bad choices.

There is an old book that explains in great detail our imperfect world, our imperfect selves, our horror-filled existence, and how to look and deal with it in a way that actually *works*. Take that away from people and it's a cakewalk to convince everyone there is evil all around and yours is the only possible solution.

The removal of God and Christianity from public discourse and our (true) collective mind paved the way for this in gold.

The good news is that same book explains what *they* are up to as well. So as depressing as it is, I get it and I handle it that bit better. This is what humans inevitably do because we live in a fallen world.

171 Yell at me all you want, but the change in western civilization - meaning its decline from Independence, freedom, and liberty toward central control, strict adherence to irrational rules, and a duty to state before person - is directly connected to the rise of the female, and the men who fear them, in public life. Those qualities that make a family the solid and successful foundation of civilization are largely the province of the female/motherhood, but those same qualities are impossibly imported into public policy today; the results are predictable and destructive because a small family is homogeneous, small, controllable within small age ranges, and insulated from outside controlling influences.

After listening to her argument and how poorly grounded it was in facts and critical thinking, I pointed out that she should love living up here because there are 5 hydro plants within 20 miles of this place. Our local power grid is very nearly 100% free of carbon emissions. Of course, she does not love living here. Hydro plants are Bad because, um, they totally change the state of nature that existed here prior to the white Debils showing up.

Wokeness does not allow room for problems to be solved. In any way, shape or form. Wokeness demands a state of permanent grievance.

175 Guilt and shame were critical to human evolution, and tied to religion those human emotions helped civilize the western world by helping people avoid deadly and destructive sins. Modern secular leftists who are detached from western religions that embrace civilization (e.g. Judaism and Christianity) still feel guilt and shame, but they channel their guilt and shame into tearing down civilization.

181 My unPC take on "wokeness" as a religion:

It doesn't emulate Christianity but rather Islam. Christians sin and their guilt is only washed away in the blood of Christ. If they fake repentance for the world to see, it is hypocrisy. Their internal conversion matters. In fact, Jesus told his disciples to NOT to publicize their good deeds, praying, fasting, etc. (Matthew 6) And they must love their enemies, which is the hardest thing to do IMO.

Islam is about outward appearances, just like the "wokeness." The Five Pillars are a public declaration of faith, praying in the proscribed manner, giving about 2.5 % to one's own community, fasting sunrise to sunset during Ramadan (but pigging out at night is fine), and making the very public Hajj once. Love your enemies? Hell, no! Like the drug-taking, fornicating jihadis of 9/11, you can indulge yourselves as long as you destroy the designated enemies of your "woke" crowd.

A company I worked at for 7 years. The guy who started it had built the idea up from nothing. Made a very nice business. This worked for 20 years. During a management meeting the subject of firing bad employees and keeping good ones came up. Someone made the comment that they would love to get rid of the dead weight, but HR was throwing road blocks. The owner got frustrated and yelled 'HR does NOT own this company.'
