The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

One of the mixed blessings of the information age is the instant and world-wide transmission of pretty much everything, from the raw data to wild extrapolations and interpretations and politically motivated screeds that may or may not be based on reality. Even worse is the lack of perspective, since hysterical tweets and headlines sell ads and newspapers, while sober reflection and interpretation is wiser and more boring.

And coronavirus is a great example of this. Is it the pandemic that will bring down the world economy, or is it just another flu-like syndrome that kills the old and the weak, just like the flu does...every single year. Last year the flu killed 20,000 people in the USA alone. And the year before was worse. World wide? WHO estimates that seasonal influenza may result in 290 000-650 000 deaths each year due to respiratory diseases alone.

So what is the official government response to this widespread yearly virus that kills hundreds of thousands of people each year? Pretty rational actually! The American government subsidizes vaccine research, tries to make the public aware of the basic precautions that will minimize exposure, and places it properly in the category of "manageable."

But hysteria usually wins out, and here is a great example of such.

Michela Musolino is a professional singer and a long-time reader and commenter at AoSHQ who was in northern Italy recently for a series of concerts, unfortunately right smack in the middle of Italy's coronavirus outbreak.

Her experience is fascinating, and her observations are equally valuable and worth a read.

Greetings From Coronavirus Central!

By Sunday afternoon, we found that we couldn't go anywhere because not only were all Northern regions cancelling all public activity, Southern regions in Italy were already barring entry to anyone from the Lombardia region. We felt like the "unclean" from the times of the Plague. Masses had been cancelled as well. This happened only days before Ash Wednesday, the start of Christendom's holiest season. All of our live performances had been cancelled, whether they were in the Lombardia or not, even if they were in a different region, more than three hours from any outbreak. Musician friends of ours were reporting that some of their shows on Saturday, the night before had been cancelled, even if in areas untouched by the virus. By Sunday night, everybody was sitting around telling stories to keep entertained and saying that we were reliving Boccaccio's Decameron, except by then that joke was already wearing thin.
Read the whole thing!

Here's what I think: Coronavirus is probably self-limiting, just like the flu. And when a vaccine is developed it will be relegated it to the back pages of newspapers as filler on a slow day. As Michela points out, there is very little information about the people who are actually dying of this. Are they old and sick? Are they smokers (the Chinese smoke like chimneys!), do they have other preexisting conditions that make the virus more dangerous? How many people who get it have mild symptoms and then recover quickly without coming to the attention of the statistics gatherers?

I am deeply suspicious of any analysis that does not recognize the realities of the differences in medical care and overall health between a country like China and a country like The United States. We deliver health care much quicker and much more effectively than China, our citizens are much healthier, and our culture limits exposure to these things in many ways. Why, it's almost as if there are qualitative differences in cultures and countries!

21 OT from Coronavirus, but just as troubling:
The banning of half the mods at the_donald, and punishing people for upvoting positive Trump things, is terrifying for three things:

Suppression of free speech,
China getting its claws in US free speech,
And ESPECIALLY using internet to interfere with elections.

When they started creating a new site months ago, the Donald.win, I thought they were being a bit over dramatic. Now I know they were 100% right to be worried Reddit would suppress their freedom of speech and mess with the election.

32 Of course I was NOODED:

I'm scraping as much cash as I can to buy into the market again when the time seems right. I look at it in a few ways:

1. The underlying strength of the market here in US is strong...if the Dems and the MSM want to panic the country via the stock market with a virus I don't think is anything worse than previous ones, so be it what a wonderful opportunity to buy.

2. I'm completely wrong and the virus is a global killer...what good is paper money or plenty of cash on hand going to do for me anyways?

3. I've invested in lead over the last 10 years and if it goes that far that will be the only investment that will have a solid ROI.

Hell why not? We'll see.

33 You have to admire how good the Dems have gotten at being able to blame Trump for absolutely everything.

If Trump takes the logical actions to curb the coronavirus coming here in cracking down on immigration and closing the borders, they get to yell at him for racism and being uncaring about those less fortunate.

If he doesn't, they get to blame him for not doing enough to stop the spread.

Heads I win, tails you lose.

Sorry, I was busy looking up
similar numbers to yours for my @517. Mostly for China, but there are
others, like Iran, where the number is closer to 10%.

You are
correct that there is much we don't know, but to state that this is no
more serious than a typical flu is simply to ignore the facts as they
now stand. We can hope it won't be as bad as we expect, but we have to
prepare for it to be.

The really interesting thing (in a
literally morbid sense) will be when it hits both Koreas (probably
already has). I'll bet the rate in NK will be catastrophic, and could
well destabilize the regime.

40 From the last thread:

Here's a little math. South Korea, very much a 1st world country now, has about 1300 reported cases of CV, and has reported 13 deaths from it. That's a mortality rate of 1%. Again, the rate for a typical flu is about 0.1 %.

To continue the thought, that means it might be expected to kill 10x as many people in the US as the flu on a typical year.

According to the CDC, that's 12,000 - 61,000 deaths due to flu per year since 2010.

120,000 - 610,000 deaths in the US due to this virus is a sobering thought.

Posted by: bonhomme at February 27, 2020 11:03 AM (i0wNm)

41 Again I have to refer to John Ringo's "The Last Centurion"

One of the plot points is the outbreak of a new airborne flu (ORIGINATING IN CHINA! AND THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT SCREWED THE POOCH!)

But he uses the difference in the SARS outbreak.

Overseas, people died. In the US they didn't.

The difference was the quality and wide spread health care in the US.

GREAT book, btw,

52 This was Willowed, but still applies...

What I don't understand is why people would consider a pandemic like this to be a negative on the economy.

Let's say this thing is as bad as the media wants you to believe. It runs wild through the country and 1 million people die. What is the net effect?

The million that die would be the oldest, weakest, least wealthy people in the country. Others would be people who had existing conditions that lowered their natural immunity.

Maybe the healthcare sector would take a hit, now that they had a million less people to milk in their last weeks of life, but overall, the country would experience substantially less Medicare/Medicaid spending, real estate would be sold and bought, money would be inherited and the world would continue to turn.

Nature has a way of culling the herd from time to time. It's not all bad.

What made the 1918 flu so wicked was that it attacked the healthiest immune systems - which meant that the prime victims were working, healthy adults in their 20's and 30's. The old, the young, and the sick perversely had much higher survival rates than the healthy did.

That truly was the nastiest pandemic the world has seen since the black death.

1) Since WW II, the average time for the market to get back to its pre-correction level has been 8 months.

2) That KY state legislative seat which Trump/RNC bragged about flipping last Tuesday was a real time warp, Twilight Zone place. All white, all rural & solid Democratic bastion. Trump finally carried it in 2016, & ir was bound to flip sooner or later, but I fear it has no predictive value.

3) RAS has Trump's JA at 52% today, the third day in a row over 50%. If Sanders is nominated, the GOP needs to plan on how to prevent a "lonely landslide," like Nixon's in '72. GOP MUST start focusing NOW on defeating most ofl those freshmen DEM House members elected in 2018, & thereby flipping the House..

104 Someone called into Breitbarts XM show last night with Sunny and the gal who regularly hosts at 9pm. The gentleman was calmly, but with a bit of snark, explaining his point of view that the media is driving the hysteria over coronavirus, as it isn't nearly as deadly as all the previous pandemic types of virus, of which he recited the entire list. And even those virus's had a mortality rate of 3-4%. He pointed out the reason that the Spanish Flu was so deadly was because the sanitary conditions in 1918 Europe were terrible and he rightly pointed out that sanitary conditions in China aren't great.

They went ballistic on him, demanding to know if he thought no one should be bothering to inform the US public about this pending crisis . He asked them if they had ever been to Wuhan China ( no , neither had, but they were sure it was a modern industrial city) and he tried to tell them he has and it is ten times worse than the worst part of Chinatown in NYC or SF as far as sanitary conditions.

They flipped out on him. Kept screaming about how this is tanking the economy because all the factories in China are shut down, etc.

This is supposed to be a factual, conservative leaning program.

Posted by: josephistan

I wonder if climate is playing a role, because you're right, you would expect it to be in Africa by now (it is, but not in a big way, yet)?

I've been trying to find out why the flu goes away every year. It seems it's because people are closer in winter, so when someone sneezes or coughs, it has a better chance of passing the infection. Also, they're breathing dry air, which makes the lungs more susceptible to infection.
I suppose it's possible that that's why Africa is doing better than expected.

193 What I don't understand is why people would consider a pandemic like this to be a negative on the economy.

The problem is that certain sections of the economy will be screwed up, and then the disruption spreads.

Take car manufacturing. A car is about ten thousand different components made by about a thousand different manufacturers. What happens to the car production when lets say the Ignition wiring is not available, because the factory in China is still shut down? Maybe they find a new supplier, but it takes a week? Multiply that by the springs in the windshield wiper arm, the door speakers, the wiring harness for the headlights and the accessory outlets/ cigarette lighter sockets.

Everyone is scrambling to find new suppliers, but the production line is shutdown, and everyone is sitting at home not getting paid. The other suppliers aren't needed, so they also furlough their workers too. The short GM strike is going to take a few tenths of a percent out of the nation's GDP. GM is only one of three car manufacturers. Imagine what happens if half the US manufacturers furlough workers for a week, or two? Not just cars, but farm machinery, appliances, HVAC, etc.

Add in the medical supplies and pharmaceutical interruptions from China Inc. Vietnam and other Asian countries sew textiles to make clothes, etc. They are shutting factories down because the textiles are made in Chinese factories that are shutdown by the Wuhan Pneumonia/ Coronavirus / COVID 2019.

I"m still of the mind this was an accident due to incompetence and flippancy of researchers at the Wuhan lab. As a bioresearch guest on Tucker pointed out, researchers in China often will take lab animals that have survived experiments to local markets to sell them live as meat to generate some cash for themselves. Wuhan is the only level IV bioresearch lab in China and this is just too convenient for a novel type of coronavirus to have started there in the local population.

Same when they had Olympics ... the actually put up walls to hide the poor sections ... painted pretty murals on the walls for a false facade. There were shortages of glyphosate (Round-Up, prices doubled or more) here because they quit making it in that area (so I heard) to try to reduce their pollution, to save face for the Olympics.

Johns Hopkins says US is #1 in prep for a potential pandemic ... as Trump noted yesterday. We will fare better than others ... need to move supply chains home though, in any case. And #1, need to get the NewsSupplyChain back from China and DeepState that run current MSM. The fake news cheers/propagandizes for Coronavirus to defeat Trump/Liberty.

238 I think it would be possible to preserve the nucleus of our species at the bottom of some of our deepest mineshafts. A computer could be programmed to select members of our population for the most necessary skills. Of course it would be absolutely vital that our top government and military men be included to foster and impart the required principles of leadership and tradition. Naturally, they would breed prodigiously, eh? There would be much time, and little to do. But ah with the proper breeding techniques and a ratio of say, ten females to each male, I would guess that they could then work their way back to the present gross national product within say, twenty years.

"Doctor, you mentioned the ratio of ten women to each man. Now, wouldn't that necessitate the abandonment of the so called monogamous sexual relationship, I mean, as far as men were concerned?"

"Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature."

No, I don't trust the Chicoms. That was my point. I didn't think Ebola was a significant threat to the US for many reasons, and the mini-panic that that caused (I was in NYC at the time someone returned with it) was ridiculous. This thing has much greater potential. Relatively speaking.

Agree. We still only have a total of 100k ICU units. Given that around 20% require ICU for weeks, beginning to build another 100k a month ago would have been wiser to err on the side of caution. Also actually testing for the virus. We have tested 445. Also closing the borders with national guard. Stopping all air travel from Asian countries that would be a high risk as well.

Sick people and old sick people with symptoms are not being tested and being sent home with meds, and they aren't getting better. Reports of hospitals and clinics not wearing masks.

Things can be done better. Still can. Sadly they won't and a game of chance is being played in the face of scientific data which says we should prepare.

330 I"m still of the mind this was an accident due to incompetence and flippancy of researchers at the Wuhan lab.
Posted by: Jen the original at February 27, 2020 11:25 AM (vfS9U)

--------

When this all started, I sort of flippantly suggested that one of the techs or a security guard stole the wrong lab animals to sell for a few yuan.

I still think that when Beijing heard who Patient Zero was , that was when China went Defcon 0 and started all the quarantines. The local bosses hid the facts for a few months, until it was out of control.

The Democrats remind of what happens to charity organizations such as the Red Cross when there is a flood or fire. Instead of finding out what the people affected actually need , people start sending clothes, used furniture, etc, inundating the organization with stuff they can't use or store. When what people actually need is money, gas cards, hot meals served from food trucks, etc.

There is zero reason that Congress can't grant the Trump request for 2.5B funding right now, and then wait to see what is needed, if additional, later as the need comes up.

They have tried blaming the US already - this from Politico on 2/3.
China has blamed the United States for spreading fears about the
coronavirus and accused Washington of doing nothing to help contain the
outbreak. . . .

Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a written
statement that many countries appreciated China's efforts to contain the
spread of the coronavirus, with the exception of the U.S.

"The U.S. government has not provided any substantial assistance to us,
but it was the first to evacuate personnel from its Consulate in Wuhan,
the first to suggest partial withdrawal of its embassy staff, and the
first to impose a travel ban on Chinese travelers. All it has done could
only create and spread fear, which is a bad example."

I heard a caller into Rush's show yesterday posit that Vitamin D deficiency increases vulnerability to virus infections. Given that virus infections are less likely in sunny, warm climes (and seasons), there might be something to that. Since those of us in colder climates aren't getting Vit. D production from our skin in "flu season" it would seem that Vit. D supplementation would be a cheap, safe, hedge bet.

What kind of shape physically was he in before the outbreak hit? Was he a smoker? Was he taking care of himself with necessary food and water while working? Was his working himself to exhaustion making him additionally vulnerable to getting sick?

Yes he was only 34 years old, but there are far more questions than just his age.

This isn't happening in a vacuum.

450 If true, would that imply multiple strains? Wouldn't you have antibodies against the same strain if you just got over it?

Yeah, supposedly the rumor is that it can re-infect you, somehow. Probably not so much a reinfection as dormant in your body, then comes back. But I can't see how that mechanism works unless it mutates or something, since your body builds up antibodies specifically to attack that infection.

453 The problem in China is that masks are rationed to 2 per day in hospitals for health providers.

Why does this matter? Moisture (that you create by just breathing) limits a mask's effectiveness to about a half an hour.

The other BIG problem...Chinese medical professionals are remarkably ignorant of basic microbiology, AND the Chinese don't do soap. Personal sanitation that we do reflexively is nearly an alien concept in China.

479 The left/media is taking a huge gamble on the Coronovirus.

they are building it up as essentially "the next black plague" and already arguing that the Trump admin fumbled the ball and hasn't done enough to combat the virus and is incompetent.
For this strategy to work, there has to be a huge outbreak and chaos and lost of death. If that doesn't happen, the left/media just handed Trump a huge win, b/c he can point to their alarmism and say "see, my admin kept you safe from the black plague". Of course, at that point the left/media will try to downplay the coronovirus and say it was never really a threat and the Trump admin didn't really do anything - but they won't be able to get away with it, they've already set the stage.
So, their gamble is the hope that this turns into a really bad pandemic in the U.S. If it doesn't, they've given Trump a huge PR win.

491 I don't think I'm over-reacting. I did go to WalMart and buy some stuff in bulk because you know what? WalMart makes me twitchy on the best of days. Grocery stores are crowded, often with people and their sick kids after work and school.

I don't think that anything is likely to shut down. It's not impossible that it will, but not likely. But I still want to be able to avoid places that involve too much closeness and breathing each others air if we reach a point where that seems wise.

We DO live differently than Asia. We normally have more space between us. If I had to take public transportation to commute, I'd stop. Or have people wear the masks on the train and bus. Why not? (provided they're available) People who are sick and don't know it would have far less chance of infecting others that way.

And wash your hands with soap!

Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at February 27, 2020 12:15 PM (lbYzk)

496 Sucks to be them, but the best information about COV19 seems to be from the SK outbreak at Daegu, folks on the Cruise Ship of Doom, and Italy. Anything coming out of China is suspect.

Deaths in Italy, the Cruise Ship people, and South Korea, all demonstrate deaths are predominately among the elderly with pre existing conditions.

What is not being reported in open media is tracking how many are being admitted to hospital ICU's for complications and their demographics. At least some of the patients in ICU appear to be younger.

The Japanese media reporting on a case has a misleading headline about reinfection. Instead, what apparently happened in her case was a relapse which happens in viral cases. That does not mean that people do not build immunity to corona virus as some of the more hysterical media reporting has indicated.

Thus, if we consider this as "super flu", it might be a bit more accurate. If you have loved ones or friends that are elderly, NOW is the time to help them prepare for a lengthy staycation at home. I would try to upschedule any pending doctor or hospital appointments etc. before outbreaks make that perilous. Make sure that they have at least 90 day supplies of critical medication, accessible food, and so on. Setup some means of alternative face time via technology that you can communicate with them and have them see their grandkids, etc. now rather than later.

Talk with any nursing home or similar facility if you have loved ones in there and what are going to be their protocols regarding visitors, etc. These places are similar to a cruise ship where a large number of vulnerable people are crowded into a small area with problems of hygiene etc.

If you are immuno suppressed, similar isolation preparation features may be necessary.

If you are a health care worker, I would regard y'all at similar risk if you work among the general hospital or general treatment areas.

Health care workers are at risk for a) stress from overwork lowers viral defenses, b) some patients may have very high viral loads and the dose makes the poison, and c) breaches in protective gear, hygiene, and exposure to bodily fluids/products are a risk and d) time spent around sick people. For good reasons, if you are a health care worker, you will probably need to curtail a lot of outside activities as you are a potential vector of infection.

Fortunately, at this time, we apparently know enough that most children are at slight risk as it appears young adults are absent any specific risk factors such as immuno suppressed. In older adults, as the age creeps up with complicating health factors, then risk does as well. Assess your risk factors and act accordingly.

My personal guess is that the death toll in the West will be lower than China with an uncertain prediction about longterm contributors to health problems. However, even a 1% death rate would be fairly massive if 60-70 percent of the 330 million or so US population gets infected would be about 2 million people of which a lot would be elderly and in poor health. If you have a loved one in that condition, visit them now and tell them that you love them.

Long term, this will have little to no impact on the economy other than perhaps causing reevaluations of risk and supply chains.

The Spanish Flu deaths did little to stop the boom in the 20's and given that production facilities and the young are not the most affected, I doubt it will be like the Black Death.
