Nightmare Chaos: Democrats Plot/Expect a Brokered Convention

The Democrat convention rules require a candidate to get an outright majority of all delgates' votes on the first ballot, or else it goes to a second ballot, and becomes a so-called "brokered convention."

And on the second ballot, delegates are permitted to vote for candidates other than those they're pledged to.

And also -- the Establishment "SuperDelegates," the party hacks and Hillary dependents, get to vote on the second ballot and any subsequent ballots.

Mike Bloomberg has realized he can't wain the race, at least not by regular delegates. The "Bloomberg Fever" he'd been hoping for failed to infect America.

So instead he's plotting to stay in the race and come in second place (or, who knows, third or fourth), and try to deny Sanders his first ballot majority. And then convince the SuperDelegates and delegates for other alleged "moderates" to vote for him.

By the way, yeah, I think that Bloomberg's "arguments" will consist of money changing hands.

Oh wait, that's silly; Democrats are about fairness , not money.

Politico fears a brokered convention could "devolve into chaos."

You had me at "devolve into chaos."

Mike Bloomberg is privately lobbying Democratic Party officials and donors allied with his moderate opponents to flip their allegiance to him -- and block Bernie Sanders -- in the event of a brokered national convention.

The effort, largely executed by Bloomberg’s senior state-level advisers in recent weeks, attempts to prime Bloomberg for a second-ballot contest at the Democratic National Convention in July by poaching supporters of Joe Biden and other moderate Democrats, according to two Democratic strategists familiar with the talks and unaffiliated with Bloomberg.

...

The rule prohibiting superdelegates, or automatic delegates, from voting on the first ballot of a contested convention was instituted only after the last convention, which followed a primary in which superdelegates overwhelmingly sided against Sanders and with the establishment-oriented Clinton.

...

If Sanders secures a plurality of delegates but loses the nomination on a second ballot, many moderate and progressive Democrats alike predict the national convention in Milwaukee would devolve into chaos.

The Hill reports that Democrats once thought the idea of a brokered convention was too implausible to entertain, but now think it's likely.

They also think it's "the biggest nightmare."

You had me at "devolve into chaos" and "the biggest nightmare."

One Democrat who worked on two campaigns for former President Obama called a brokered convention "the biggest nightmare Democrats can imagine."

"If you want to see a complete shit show, tune in to the brokered convention," the Democrat said.

Adam Parkhomenko, who worked on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign, said "this is currently heading for a convention fight at this rate."

"If the number of candidates scoring in the double-digits that are splitting delegates continue to do so through Super Tuesday and beyond, it’s just math, unless all of a sudden a number of candidates drop out," he said.

Who's dropping out if the prospect of a brokered convention, where anyone can make a case why they should be the nominee, can win?

The very notion of a potential brokered convention almost guarantees that enough candidates will stay in that will in turn guarantee a brokered convention.

Meanwhile, the creepy homosexual geek Pete Buttigiege is now calling on Bloomberg to drop out of the race.

Pete Buttigieg's campaign called on Michael Bloomberg to drop out of the Democratic presidential race following his rough debate performance, flipping the Bloomberg campaign's argument about the threat of Bernie Sanders back onto Bloomberg.

This is of course in response to Bloomberg's call for others to drop out.

"If Biden, Buttigieg, and Klobuchar remain in the race despite having no path to appreciably collecting delegates on Super Tuesday (and beyond), they will propel Sanders to a seemingly insurmountable delegate lead by siphoning votes away from [Bloomberg]," the Bloomberg memo read.

Everything about Buttigieg is annoying. He's a repellent creep of scarcely average intelligence who is convinced that everything he does is super-clever and ultra-cute.

Meanwhile, The Bulwark is in panic mode that Pierre Omidyar will make them endorse Sanders if he's the nominee if they want to be able to afford groceries.

Shame is Part of the Kink Update:

13 What is interesting is that everyone seems to know they're headed for a chaotic disaster so they are all pushing for their favored candidate harder now. NYT just ran an opinion piece on how Elizabeth Warren is best. Bloomberg has the establishment money guys behind him. Buttgag has silicon valley pushing him. Biden still has the old guard Republicans pushing him. Sanders has his lunatic core of small but very zealous supporters and the "squad" pushing hard for him.

Instead of trying to solidify around a single candidate, they're splitting up even harder.

That would be fine, I reckon. He also seems to challenge some other notions: that humans react better to members of their own species, perhaps. That they want their current mode of existence to continue. That they feel a connection to their families, and relatives. That they have ideas other than those absorbed through a TV screen. Maybe more.

59 The traditional brokered convention is a fun idea. You came in pledged to Smith, and once you think he can't get enough other support you're open to persuasion by Wesson, and Ruger, and the others.

The point is you started as an actual player, sent by your state party to best represent your state.

This superdelegate nonsense is stupid. Throw it to the elites? Really?

The upside is that it will give them a stupid result and the stupid nominee will have a demotivated base and will lose like a loser.

65 I think this all a last gasp effort/magical thinking on the establishment's part.

Bernie's gonna have a clear majority by the convention. Super Tuesday is going to put him so far ahead of everyone else while giving everyone else delegates so they can argue about keeping on. The anti-Bernie element won't consolidate enough, not nearly enough, and Bernie will simply gain voters as others lose interest in their initial first choices and move to the front runner.

About 1/3 Bernie the Socialist supporters.

About 1/3 Old Guard split between Biden and Bloomy.

About 1/3 Identity politics now split between the Affirmative Action Woman candidate, and the Affirmative action Gay candidate.

But the Socialists won't vote for affirmative action or old money.

Old style Dems are tired of Affirmative Action, and scared of Socialists.

And the Social Justice crowd won't vote for Old White guys.

I think it's a natural outcome of their fundamental ideology - they have been pushing tribalism and factionalism long and hard, and no one stopped to consider what that would mean when it struck close to home. (which of course it was going to) One thing about the old-school communists, they were always fanatical about pushing Loyalty to the Party above all else. This modern bunch thought that sounded to much like Loyalty to the Country, so they threw it all out and encouraged everyone to protest everything, no compromises.

And now we're going to see a pack of factions who all believe "my way or the highway!" and "no Compromises!!!" and they're all supposed to sing Kum By Yah together.

How could it end any other way than in conflict, with each sub group and faction fighting the others for supremacy? 171 The "chaos candidate" vote will not be the same person in each contest. It is whoever is in 2nd or 3rd place. Enough of this goes on, and the delegate count remains fractured. If you want chaos (a brokered convention with superdelegates in play), the goal is prevent any one of them from getting a delegate majority. Voting for 2nd or 3rd place, whoever it is, is what helps do that if you have enough chaos operators involved.

Hillary did not get a majority of pledged delegates in 2016, and Obama did not get a majority in 2008. So at least by the definition of being decided by superdelegates, both conventions were brokered, even if was done on the first ballot.

For those who can do simple arithmetic, here are some fun numbers on Bernie Sanders' harebrained socialist schemes:

it's an image he shows, but it's so perfect, check it out

https://tinyurl.com/rwj47rq

He shows with real math (not Democrat "new math") how raising min wage to $15/hr minus the taxes Bernie wants to raise, cuts those at min wage to $7.20/hr.

They are all frauds. Make the country poorer.

Bernie wants to revisit (or is it "reimagine") the Slave Class.

The income tax makes us Peasants, but with a worse deal than during the Dark Ages.

Peasants usually owed their Lord one days labor per week, or about 17%.

We already owe the State more through Income Taxes.

Now, why the one day per week? Because it WORKED. It was stable. It was doable. More than that and your peasants suddenly became dependent on the Lord of the Manor having to care for them. He would have to use his own wealth to feed them.

268 Really, I can't see ANY of the current Democratic candidates having even a ghost of a chance against Trump. Yes, they're all different and thus all have different weaknesses - -but each of those weaknesses is fatal, in their won ways.

Sanders -- the human embodiment of communism. All Trump has to do is bash communism and socialism (an effortless and quite enjoyable task, frankly) and it will sink Bernie.

Bloomberg -- Personal attacks will destroy him. He's a ludicrous figure, with zero charisma, who can simply be mocked off the stage.

Warren -- Her personal unlikeability is her Achilles Heel. All Trump has to to to beat her is act like everyone's best friend, a chummy pal, a nice uncle, and she will look like a screeching abrasive harpy in comparison.

Butty-plug -- In this case, the guy's name makes him unelectable. Just make fun of his name -- it's that simple.

Biden -- Will almost certainly die or have another stroke on the campaign trail. Self-immolation.

Trump was constantly on the attack, but only about 20% of the time (out-of-my-ass figure/guess) was directed at his opponents. Most of it was directed at external enemies. "Vote for me, and I'll contain China." "Vote for me, and I'll end NAFTA." "Vote for me and I'll deal with illegal invasion from the south." Etc.

342 Bloomberg -- Personal attacks will destroy him. He's a ludicrous figure, with zero charisma, who can simply be mocked off the stage.

I was actually concerned about Bloomberg. Its been a long time since a mayor became president (Coolidge being the last, only two have made it with Grover Cleveland being the previous one). But NYC is a good stepping stone to the big chair as its practically a major nation of its own with a foreign policy and so on.

Literally, the NYC police work in other states and even in other countries. They literally have an intelligence office there, its a little nation.

And obviously, money talks, very loud. He can afford to spend 30 billion and not even notice the loss. After a certain point you're so wealthy that most of your cash becomes basically expendable without any change to your standard of living.

And, of course, because of that cash, a lot of powerful and important people are beholden to him for donations etc. He has the establishment behind him.

But... he's an awful campaigner with zero charisma. He can't stand his own in a debate and make an impact. He sounds like Elmer Fudd, and unlike Bernie has no zealous backers.

Oh, that's sweet. Couldn't ask for better polling, from our point of view. Sanders back at 13%? Yes! That ensures that he won't get enough delegates to reach the 50% mark before the convention. In Normal America, he's still a fringe candidate.

And sine no other candidate has even a chance of getting to 50%, that means the it will DEFINITELY be a brokered convention. And then -- the riots, the naked chicks on stage, the tear gas, the bike locks, the suitcases of cash -- sweet Jesus, it will be glorious!

Its about their personal power, and having a 'seat at the table'.

454 Admittedly it's a bit early to talk "brokered convention" before Super Tuesday. But, the fact that the Democrats themselves are already doubting their candidates' individual strengths versus Trump are a sign that they are counting their chickens...and coming up short. Whither the anxiety?

The Hildabeast made a shambles out of the process in 2016 and we are seeing her legacy in a series of anxiety plays because the insiders' and pundits' view is there is no clear definable challenger to the God-Emperor. The candidates and political talking heads let Bernie Sanders set the tune. Then they belatedly realized that post-impeachment Trump would take the gloves off and give Bernie a verbal rope-a-dope that would leave him stunned and bleeding on the ring floor. Now what to do? The answer seems to yell, posture, and point out negatives with a lack of anything positive beyond "free everything to everyone".

483 I was at the Dem Convention in Denver in 2008. That one wasn't really in doubt - Obama had already gotten the nod (the backroom shenanigans happened BEFORE the convention in that year). Even so, the entire week prior to the convention was a nonstop cavalcade of protests for this or that topic. Every day I had about 15 different protests to choose from to cover. Some were mild, some were wild. I got pepper-sprayed twice, knocked to the ground by cops once, by fellow protesters numerous times. And that was a CALM year. I guarantee that if the convention is brokered this year, it will be absolute insanity.

Another factor: Denver doesn't really have deep inner city slums -- but Milwaukee does. I know for sure that the Bernie Bros. will do everything possible to get the ghetto to have an uprising during the chaos, to merge "race riots" with "political riots" into one unstoppable clusterfuck.

Milwaukee's mayor first has to admit the police can't handle it and calls the governor.

Then the governor has to admit the Army National Guard can't handle it and calls the President.

Spent last weekend with my 81-year old mother-in-law. Probably voted for one Republican in her life, maybe. Thinks Trump is a lying-liar-who-lies. Consumes a steady diet of CNN, MSNBC, ABC, and CBS. Grew-up knowing that "Uncle Walter" (Cronkite) would never, ever lie to her.

Quoting now... "I just don't think I can believe any of them anymore". When sainted bride followed-up with, "Trump? Politicians?" she responded with "The News".

So there's that.
