Problem Solutions

Beginner Problem - White To Play

20200215 - Problem 1.jpg
r6r/2p1R3/p4k1p/1p1b2p1/P1pP1qPP/B1P5/4QP2/R5K1 w - - 0 1

Mate in 3:

1.Qe5+ Qxe5

Or 1...Kg6 2.Qg7#

2.dxe5+ Kg6
3.h5#

Intermediate Problem - White To Play

20200215 - Problem 2.jpg
7k/1p5p/7P/pq6/8/8/R5P1/4R2K w - - 0 1

1.Rxa5! Kg8

Not 1...Qb6? 2.Ra8+ Qd8 3.Rxd8# or 1...Qxa5?? 2.Re8#

2.Rxb5 Kf7

Black must give up his queen to avoid the immediate mate. White mops up with:

3.Rb6 Kg8
4.Rxb7 Kf8
5.Ra1 Kg8
6.Ra8#

Advanced Problem - White To Play

20200215 - Problem 3.jpg
8/r6p/PR2Pk2/8/8/1B1b4/8/6K1 w - - 0 1

1.e7+ Kxe7
2.Rb7+ Kd6

If 2...Rxb7 then 3.axb7 and the pawn skates to the 8th rank. Black can make White work for the win by not retaking the rook, and by bringing his king into play.

3.Rxa7 Kc6
4.Ra8 Kb6
5.a7 Ba6

If Black tries to immediately force the rook away with 5...Be4, then White can force a decisive simplificaton with 6.Re8 Bb7 7.a8=Q Bxa8 8.Rxa8 winning.

6.Bd5 h5

Or 6...h6 7.Kg2 h5 8.Kg3 h4+ 9.Kxh4 Bd3 10.Kg5 Ba6 11.Kf4 Bf1 12.Ke3 Bb5 13.Rb8+ Kxa7 14.Rxb5 wins

7.Kg2 h4
8.Kh3 Be2
9.Kxh4 Ba6
10.Kg5 Bd3
11.Kf4 Ka6
12.Ke3 Bb1
13.Rc8 Kxa7
14.Ra8+ Kb6
15.Rb8+ and wins with the skewer.

The moral of this story is, don't give up too early. It's true that White had the win, but he had to work hard for it, and in the stress of a tournament situation, time pressure, etc., there's plenty of room for mistakes.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

I don't know how big a factor that would be, but I do know that Ms. Lahno is an International Grandmaster. That's a title you get by achieving superior performance norms, not by flashing a bit of cleavage.

67 First Lady Melania Trump was a rose in a red embroidered and sequined gown as she and President Donald Trump hosted a formal dinner at the Winfield House for Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles on Tuesday in London, England.

In a fire-engine red wool crepe gown by Givenchy's Clare Waight Keller - a Brit, herself, and the first female creative director at the Parisian fashion house who famously designed Meghan Markle's wedding gown.

The Givenchy number is from the brand's Resort 2019 collection and features a bead-embroidered bodice panel and long cape sleeves which are slit open at the front for Mrs. Trump's arms to peak through. The relaxed fitted gown is finished with a satin godet insert and side-slip pockets.

The gown retails for about $7,240.

Mrs. Trump wore sparkling diamond earrings as her only accessory.

Sounds like almost perfect weaponization, but on the bright side think how much money the Clintons made from the Chinese and how much we citizens saved from being able to buy cheap crap made by slave labor with our unemployment checks.
Wonder if DoD ever did any studies on military success when so many critical items have been outsourced to a foreign (and potentially adversarial) nation?

91 Advanced Problem again.

Surely the first move is correct.

1. e7+ Kxe7

Otherwise white queens a pawn immediately and there are no checks in the position. So ...

2. Rb7+ Kf7
3. Rxa7

still looks won for white.

Right. Black does not have to take that path, i.e. it is not a forced line. In particular, he doesn't have to take the rook, even though that looks like the logical continuation.

112 OT but this is sort of hilariously amazing. The WSJ published an article about atmospheres in other planets could give clues to life. In the course of the narrative the article compared CO2 levels in Venus and Earth, scaring the reader into thinking we are destroying our atmosphere. They leave out that Venus' atmosphere is 96.% CO2 and Earth's is four one hundreths of one percent (.04%). Venus has nearly 2500 times our CO2 because IT LACKS PLANTS. So global warming and the human economy had nothing to do with Venus' crazy armospheric CO2. So, fuck you WSJ.

Oh, it is, no question. But Black can put some resistance, and hope that White will blunder. If I found myself in this position as Black in an actual game, I wouldn't resign but make White prove to me that he knew how to win, especially if my opponent was equal to or below my own rating level. It may only be 4-5 more moves, but I would not immediately resign.

It causes lesions to form on the testicles causing infertility, so if you survive, you are infertile and probably have very low T. It also affects the lining of all major organs on the surface because of the ACE2 gene expression is located on those too.

Posted by: NaCly Dog at February 15, 2020 06:23 PM (u82oZ)

That's a very good question - I don't think anyone can answer "why". The sun itself, which of course has an immense magnetic field, swaps polarity every 11 years, give or take. And no one can really explain why, but it's part of the system. In fact, the sun is in the middle of a polarity flip right now. Which is why all the sunspots have vanished this year, and which might have something to do with cooling.

216 Advanced.

1. e7+ Kxe7
2. Rb7+ Kd6
3. Rxa7

Now there are *two* lines. Kc5 or Kc6.

3. ... Kc6
4. Bd5+ Kb6
5. Rb7+ Kxa6

white now keeps the black king on the a-file with the rook and uses his bishop and king to take the pawn on h7 and then comes back to mate black. I don't see a way for white to hang on to the a6 pawn in this line.

3. ... Kc5
4. Rc7+ Kb6
5. a7 Be4
6. Rxh7 ... ( Bxh7 7. a8=Q )

So white will play Rg7 and then manoever his bishop on to the h1-a8 diagonal, protected by the king and wins.

No maintenance, no storage fees for something you'd only use, what, a few times a year?

And should it be that y'all DO like it and want to buy one, then you're ahead of the game in that you'll have some idea of what features you liked, and which ones to avoid.

Meanwhile. RENT one. No monthly payments, yay!

286 OT but this is sort of hilariously amazing.

I like the kickoff rules and punt rules. I also love the elimination of the extra point and what they have done. I wouldn't mind seeing all of these in College and NFL. It is much more entertaining, strategic, and ironically adds a valued skill to both the kickers and punters.

349 Venus is by far the hottest planet in the Solar System, with a mean surface temperature of 735 K (462 C; 863 F), but it is all due to the fact that Venus' atmosphere is 96.% CO2, the end result of centuries of uncontrolled carbon emissions by the Venusian SUVs.
Posted by: Greta Thunderbird at February 15, 2020 07:21 PM (BiNEL)

Tell your father to get his facts straight, Greta! It would be impossible for SUVs to bring up the temperature (and concentration of CO2) that high as the spontaneous ignition point of Gasoline is around 530 K after which point it would be impossible for SUVs to run (of course, some of their components would've began melting down before that).

Kung Flu isn't something I care to get fired about until it starts presenting in large numbers in American cities. It doesn't seem to be a widespread issue here.

For instance: I've had to go through daily screenings for it because the NICU where my daughter lives is super worried about it. But the screen is just verbal... "Have you been to China," etc. I said "No, but how would you know it? How many cases have presented in your hospital?"

The answer was "0."

At least as far as the US market goes, there don't appear to be many issues. I've heard about a few Kung Flu cases in Dallas, Houston, and Chicago. I expect there are more in other places, but not severe enough ones to warrant further scrutiny.

Last year, a well-known whiskey bar and steakhouse got jacked on their lease, and the popular owner, a staple of the restaurant scene in Seattle since the '70's said screw it and shut down.

The month before they closed, and with so many premium whiskeys on the shelf (well over 100), they were offering any shot on the wall for eight bucks.

Buddy and I on a late Sunday afternoon, no sports in town so it was slow, and the bartender and us got to talking. He got to recommending old, expensive, and rare choices.

"Here is one, Ancient Age, they went out of business maybe 20 years ago".

"Hey, my old man used to drink that!"

"Ancient Age made many different choices, here is the 'Ancient - Ancient Age".

Ohh, yeah. It had softened to a smooth, nearly orange liqueur taste with a smooth whiskey tail. Buddy never liked whiskey, he had a second shot with me.

It was simply amazingly smooth, balanced and absolutely unique flavor.

As the Rolling Stones once said, "time is on my side".

The difficulty, I think, is *cost*, rather than accessibility.

My question is, why are costs so high? I might cite the doc down the street who owns *19* fairly exotic automobiles.

I believe that somewhat like unqualified student loans enabling ridiculous school tuitions, the isolation of the payer from the payee (via employer-provided insurance) has allowed the price of healthcare to be largely concealed to the consumer.

There is very little market pressure to compete in pricing.

Of course scientists will look at genetic differences with this virus. Some Chinese researchers already say that this virus has an affinity for a protein that is more abundant in the alveoli of Asian people.

Medical science often looks at differences in how different groups respond to medications as well. I thought this was sort of common knowledge.

393 For the 'ettes: there's a fun YouTube channel with a young woman named Saifiya Nygaard. She picked out 3representative looks from the 60's, 70's and 80's, dressed up in the vintage clothes, and did her makeup and hair (with the help of a talented hair stylist) to fit each era and each outfit. She's thoughtful in her approach - she just doesn't throw things together that she found at a thrift store. My favorite video of hers is her 50's look - she not only got a vintage 50's dress, she also wore a bullet bra and the closest thing to a girdle she could find. And the hairdresser set her hair in rollers and pinwheels, put her under a bonnet hairdryer and coated her hair with - of course! - AquaNet!

Without makeup, she's not particularly pretty. But her makeup is very skillful. After her 50's makeover, she looked like everyone's 50's mom. And after her '60's and 70's ones, she looked exactly the way I remember Carnaby Street Mod girls, hippie chicks, punk rockers and disco queens looking - using the products available at the time.

I hope she does videos for the 20's, 30's and 40's as well.

400 I love chess, hubby is even a fairly highly rated player, but I have a pet peeve.
How often, in movies (and even built into boards in the parks) are the boards set up wrong.
There's a saying I learned as a child: white is on the right.
The board is properly set up with the white square on the right for each player.
But it is on the left so often.
At our main Salt Lake City park fully half the boards are embedded in the cement tables so the benches face the board wrong.
On TV and in movies it is about 50/50.
Does this even bother people other than me???
