I Choo Choo Choose You, ONT

I'm pretty thin on links tonight, so this one is going to be image and video heavy. Since it's Valentine's Day, lets start out with someone who obviously has a lot of love in her.

Twitter.jpg

Well, she's had a lot of sumpin' sumpin' in her, anyway.

Elephants

Elephants are fascinating. They have complex social behaviors, for example, look at this elephant mocking a rhino.

And tell me this elephant isn't well aware of how he is pranking the silly humans:

They even demonstrate rituals and mourning when one of their own dies. I'm not anti-hunting in any way, but I think some animals are too far up the intelligence scale to hunt. Elephants are on that list.

Bless Her Heart

If you haven't seen the original, well, it's just the non-narrated part of this clip. The pseudo-Freeman narration takes it to a whole other level, however.

Ahoy!

For some reason I have a bunch of clips of Billy K. Don't know what to do with them, so I'll share them here.

Interesting Idea

Rotary Jail Museum

Apparently they were prone to ripping limbs off of inmates as they turned. Hey, I said it was an interesting idea, not a good idea. In any event, if you want to see the only working example left, go to Indiana.

Markets Don't Work In Medicine!

Utah company offers walk-in MRI scans and it’s cheaper than you may think

The average time to see a doctor for the first time in the US is 24 days. The average wait time nationally for an MRI is three weeks. Taylor’s walk-in MRI clinic cuts that wait time down significantly and allows the freedom to know what’s going on that same day.
Getting the actual MRI takes about 30-45 mins and you’ll get your images and a radiologist report. Taylor is a board-certified radiologist specialist trained in Musculoskeletal Imaging at the Mayo Clinic, so you can trust the results you get.

After you get your results and report, you can then take them to your treating physician who can help you decide the best treatment for your problem.

“Our purpose is not for people to avoid seeing a licensed physician, we just want to get to a diagnosis faster and at a lower out-of-pocket expense,” Taylor said. "While this option may not be for everyone, it is a convenient and cost-effective solution for someone who has a high insurance deductible, no insurance at all or who wants to pay a low cash price," Taylor said.

There's a place in Oklahoma that does the same thing for surgeries. All prices posted before any work is performed. They could run 24/7 if they wanted.

77 Further to the German Army on the Eastern Front and Mechanization of Armies discussion had in the earlier thread today, I am currently reading Deathride, Hitler v. Stalin, the Eastern Front 1941 - 1945, by John Mosier. Lots of interesting new scholorship from from Mr. Mosier.

Mosier has written other books that shatter a lot of myths that I've found interesting:

The Myth of the Great War;

The Blitzkrieg Myth;

Cross of Iron: Rise and Fall of the German War Machine.

The Blitzkrieg Myth is especially enlightening on the whole "we are going to need two million horses to win against the Rissians, since we don't have many trucks and our troops can't eat shoe leather" issue.

Yeah it can get that way when cooked, better to slice it thin and put it on top raw and let it cook a little on the pizza's heat. And its best with white sauce and chicken, not beef and marinara.

You can put nearly anything on pizza that goes with meat and cheese, but Californians take that concept a bit too far.

160 Since one of the videos is an industrial accident, I'll tell a little story. Year and a half ago I was on a pipe lay barge in Mexico installing a 42" gas pipeline offshore.

Anyway, for one part of the job we have to pick the end of this pipeline up next to the barge, cut the end off and put a new end on. Fine; install rigging, lift bags, all that good stuff and pick it up. the pipe is dry inside; technicians hooked up to it weeks before and pushed all the water to the southern end (this pipe was like 100 miles long).

So the welders cut into it, and air starts rushing out. What the hell? The pipe's internal pressure is supposed to be ambient, IE equal to surface. Nothing should be moving. Engineers start talking; phone calls are made and suddenly someone calls the engineers and says, "Put it on bottom, NOW!" So we do.

Turned out the technicians who'd pushed all the water to the southern end of the line hadn't bothered to open the valves on the south. So instead of pushing the air out and moving the water, they'd compressed the air on both sides of the water and created a pressure vessel with a free floating several thousand ton seawater piston inside it. When we started cutting one end open, the air started rushing out and said thousand ton piston started moving our way. If we hadn't put the pipeline down, the water would have hit the end of the pipe and basically torn the side of the barge off.

Fun times. Never a dull moment in the oilfield.

And in most of those cases, it's probably better than dying from exposure. Which is also an option.

We usually don't make a big deal out of Valentine's Day. And so this year I bought her a nice little necklace with paws on it because she's so enamored of her pets. She loved it it was the best thing I could do, cool.

Jules on the other hand got us some Maine lobsters on the internet. Prepared them with asparagus bundled with bacon and Parmesan, and some steak fries and a lemon tart dessert. This was all accompanied bye a bottle of champagne.

Awesome, she's a keeper after 39 yrs.

258 The Mayor of Color here in Charlotte has endorsed Mini Mike.

Four years ago, Mini Mike funded a Harvard junket for mayors. I bet the parties are really lavish.

The Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, housed at the Ash Center, is a collaboration among Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Business School, and Bloomberg Philanthropies. Its mission is to inspire and strengthen city leaders, as well as equip them with the tools to lead high-performing, innovative cities.

The program offers leadership and management training to mayors who lead cities with vision and purpose, and to two senior officials from each city who are most crucial to affecting organizational change. In addition to an intensive classroom experience, the program works with each participating mayor and city leader over the course of a year to foster their professional growth and the advancement of key capabilities within their city halls.

Mike was thinking ahead.

262 That first vid of the guy running in the first boat crash. Gah. Reminds me, I worked at Coors Ceramics in Golden ions ago. Was operating a 50 ton press making chest plates. This press would press the ceramic while wet before it went into the kiln. Big bang and then pressure. One day, the press malfunctioned, you could hear it, the rhythm was off. Anyone who runs a machine know the sound. Didn't think I could run so fast and jump all the rail track in the building and out the side door so fast. Needless to say, after the blood pressure slowed down, it was a slow afternoon waiting for the guys to diagnose and fix the beast.

Yes, you stalk the animal, the animal is sometimes asleep or busy. You stay downwind, you move carefully and quietly. You come over a rise and oops. Its not likely, but it can happen. Posted by: Splunge at February 14, 2020 10:38 PM (dOV9E)

Let me tell you how they get rid of kidney stones. I might have told this take before. True story, my word as a Biden

7 mm kidney stone, so the doc knocks me out. Then he shoved this tube up my business end with a camera, laser and collection basket on it. They break up the stone, collect up the bi pieces and what's left is "sand." They then insert a stent up in there that I had to piss "cherry koolade" out of for about 3 weeks. (And you have to piss a lot.)

Then you go back to the doc to get the stent removed. So you lay back on this table with yourself exposed. While you're laying there, you notice this large steel pipe/bar above your head that's fastened to the ceiling. The doc comes in and says...this gonna hurt you more than it hurts me, lol. Then he sticks the tube up your business end again with the camera and a "grabber on the end of it. ( You ain't knocked out for this.) Then he finds the end of the stent, says, " You better grab ahold of that bar above your head there sir...this might hurt a bit." Then he says 1...2...yank!! and out comes a tube that looks like a 10" straw with a sharp angle on the end of it.

And that's why I keep myself hydrated with beer. Kidney stones hurt like hell.

333 Hunting in Central Texas, 'bout 1987.

I had done the whole routine of "de-scenting" all of my clothes, myself and my gear, followed by a subtle dab of fox urine on a shoe pad.

A trick to hunting the same lease, repeatedly, is to take a pillowcase of the local greenery home with you. After washing all your gear in chlorophyll soap, you dry it all normally, but toss that tightly closed pillowcase full of greenery in for the last 10 minutes of the drying cycle.

You'll reek of local vegetation, which is just how you want it.

So, I'm setting on the ground with my back to a tree, and a very slight mound of shrubs arranged around me as to break up my outline. Sitting (at that moment, with my legs extended, rifle across my legs, and just waiting and watching. (I'm in full face net, 100% coverage camo, being down at ground level with the game.

No deer that day. But a full grown male Bobcat walked by less than ten yards from my feet, and never sensed my presence.

I. Held. Entirely. Still. And. Motionless.

Forty pound Bobcat ain't nothing to mess with.

And waited a solid ten minutes after, before I quietly called and end to the days hunt, and quietly walked back to the truck.

You might note that Bobcat or it's Northern Cousin, the Lynx, are (I believe) in all 48 of the Continental U.S.

They're not known for attacking humans. But I don't want to be the Test Case at 30 ft. or less.

Elephants are protected from poachers by Game Wardens, who do tend to shoot said poachers as often as not.

Game Wardens in Africa exist in only three circumstances:

* A National Park or Reserve, where the Prestige of the State as towards the preservation of it's heritage in wildlife and wild country.

* A "Photo Safari" (often concurrent with National Parks & Reserves), which generates Tourist Dollars, which directly fund the Game Wardens and other Care and Keeping efforts on those lands.

* Hunting Safaris, where a group of (usually) one to four hunters pays ENORMOUS fees, which pays for not only the Game Wardens in question, but a Professional Hunter assigned to each client, one or two gun-bearers each, for the client and professional. And back at camp, a good size cadre of cooks, valets, launderers, skinners & butchers, physical camp workers, drivers and more.

The fees from a Four Hunter Safari can support some villages entirely, for a year.

Oh, and the village is who gets to keep most all of the meat from the hunts, and surplus goes out to Game Warden Stations and others in the area.

If you were to take hunting, and the Profit Motive out of the equation, those villagers would not work as Game Wardens, but instead, have to turn to taking an elephant for themselves, every month or so, just to eat.

No other paying jobs to be had out in the brush. And they're not going to move the entire village into the already over-crowded, crime and disease ridden cities.

Fastest way for the Elephant to go extinct, is to make 'em no longer profitable.

>However, we observed significantly higher ACE2 gene expression in smoker samples compared to non-smoker samples.

This dates back to 2004 but it is very relevant!

>The most remarkable finding was the surface expression of ACE2 protein on lung alveolar epithelial cells and enterocytes of the small intestine. Furthermore, ACE2 was present in arterial and venous endothelial cells and arterial smooth muscle cells in all organs studied.

402 Instead of your body building an immunity it becomes much more vulnerable to infection by other strains of the virus. Viruses use ADE to hijack into macrophages which are responsible for removing pathogens from the body, so instead of removing the virus from the body they become factories for the virus.

Infection of human alveolar macrophages by human coronavirus strain 229E
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/ PMC3352353/

The cytokines detected in novel coronavirus patients suggest macrophage infection might be occurring, as has been found in other coronavirus strains.
https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/ PIIS0140-6736(20)30183-5/fulltext

>A doctor from the Chinese Health Commission warns that certain recovered coronavirus patients might be prone to reinfection.
https://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/ its-possible-for-coronavirus-to-reinfect- recovered-patients-chinese-expert-warns/

>Zhan Qingyuan, director of pneumonia prevention and treatment at the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, said even people who have recovered may not be immune to the virus.
>"For those patients who have been cured, there is a likelihood of a relapse," he said in a briefing on Friday. "The antibody will be generated; however, in certain individuals, the antibody cannot last that long."
https://www.businessinsider.com/ wuhan-coronavirus-risk-of-reinfection-2020-2

In short, reinfections are deadlier than the initial infection. The initial infection doesn't incapacitate most people so they will spread their own mutated strains to people who have already been infected before, potentially killing them. Vaccines might end up useless if most of the world ends up infected. This could explain the lack of deaths in the West as they are initial infections instead of the much deadlier reinfections.

Most sports come across quite well on tv. In fact, an argument could be made that some sports are better on tv. Hockey is not one of those sports.

In the old days, before they pussified the NHL (I call it The Gretzky-fication of the NHL), turning it into a non contact sport, even in the nosebleeds, you could actually feel the body checks in the corners. Off all the sporting events I've seen live, NHL hockey is the best by leaps, bounds and fisticuffs.

But the NHL suffers, as other sports do, from free agency. There is no long-term player-fan relationship anymore, just a group of people paying tickets to wear team laundry.

Not a very comprehensive story if it fails to even mention the captain by name.

One problem that article fails to mention is that the vessel had recently been fitted with a new digital autopilot, which could only be disengaged by entering commands into a keypad on a workstation on the other side of the bridge from the helm.

Posted by: Weirddave at February 14, 2020 11:55 PM (Ee9BY)

Current smokers and those living in heavy air pollution cities would be at risk. Former smokers less. No smoking least risk. Need more research and data, but from the new reports of 40% on the low end to 70% on the high end, it looks like the may not be as race specific as initial research and data collected lead to believe. Smoker or former heavy smoker, male, and over the age of 12 look like the target groups.

Also, recent studies from recovered patients show that ACE2 is stored in the testes, and this virus causes lesions on the testes as an initial symptom and if you survive it leaves males sterile and difficult to produce T. The paper suggested to check for lesions as a way to diagnose Kung Flu.

Finally, this season has unusually high people being diagnosed with Influenza Like Illnesses compared on a week to week basis since the middle of January.

I started to pull off at the next exit, Davie Road, while trying to roll the window down so I could puke out the window...didn't make it. Threw up all over the dash and front windshield before I could make the exit. Pulled into the parking lot of the Waffle House and brother picked me up, took me to the emergency room in Deerfield Beach. I was bent over in pain and sat there for three hours before I got tired of waiting. I guess they thought I was faking it for dope.

I think they think that lung damage from smoke inhalation causes a change in the lung cells basically, if I read correctly, causing your lungs to have more ACE2 epithelial cells

from a previous SARS study:
"ACE2 is a membrane-associated aminopeptidase expressed in vascular endothelia, renal and cardiovascular tissue, and epithelia of the small intestine and testes"

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1002/path.1570

so you've got these cells all over the body, but for whatever reason, SARS and COVID-19 latch on to the ones in your lungs and in your intestinal tract

Vessel was on autopilot, as per standard practice, and by the time they realized they headed to Gil Island, there was not enough time to disengage the autopilot, which required using a keypad.

Just different sports. I admire any athlete's skills, but some skills interest me and some don't. I'm not interested in ice or other skating, or manipulating things with a stick (or with feet, re soccer). I am interested in throwing things accurately, running, physical contact, hitting things with a stick/bat/club/racquet, and much else besides. As a result, I'm happy to say I enjoy a variety of sports.

If I'd lived in an area where I played hockey as a youth, I'd probably have a different take. But I didn't.

539 RV Mo Meet.

If you want maximum turnout, you need to be maximum Central to The Horde.

Lake of the Ozarks.

Lake Texoma.

Maybe a big effin' lake in Central Oklahoma. Anyone know of one?

Both have beaucoup RV parks, sites and amenities. Ozarks is prettier by an Order of Magnitude, but tougher to get to, because Twisty Roads.

Too far West, and you get no East Coast Horde. Same if reversed. Too far North, and the "time to get there" factor is the culling effect.

Mine are but two point five such suggestions.

If you want a "National" Horde RV event, you want the Goldilocks Spot. If you're looking for a strong Regional turnout, pick your region, and then find your Goldilocks spot in that region.

Do some actual research, vs. "wishcasting", and choose a MARKETABLE location.

Even the Horde will have to "buy in" to your proposal. And that's gonna require a MARKETABLE proposition.

Anything less will be a guaranteed fail.

3. You can avoid contracting the virus if you don't...

Promote yourself to a near-Eisenhower level of logistical prowess. Enlist at least as many "Lieutenants" as you have remote Horde locations.

Up to them to locally organize.

You're in charge of the overall date, and the electronic coordination.

Your deputies have to handle EVERY thing in their unique Area of Operations. That CANNOT be on your shoulders.

Remember also. You're doing this all across three time zones.

Glutton for punishment, much?

(respectful kidding, if you are)

ButtJizz: $24.7 million

578 Jim, maybe there could 4-6 locations, evenly divided between:

- various regions of the US
- those who want to RV vs those who don't.

So for instance, six locations:

- RVers in Pahrump, NV; Mount Rushmore; and Virginia
- Non-RVers in Grand Canyon, AZ; Houston; and Ohio

...And again, link up together via webcams.

581 Almost any attraction that has RV camping sites will also have campsites for tent campers, and there will also likely be motels or cabin rentals in the vicinity, too.

One destination area that has not been mentioned, but which is rather central is Wisconsin Dells. Another might be Nashville.

I'm kind of rooting for BloomingIdiot to buy the nomination. Not running in the primaries, nor being on any debate stage up 'til now yet getting the nod, would put a nail in the coffin of the undemocratic Democrat Party. (And we thought the superdelegate fiasco with Skankles in 2016 was bad!) Besides, the Dems need to be nailed shut inside a coffin.

It wouldn't matter whom BloomingIdiot/The DNC choose for a running mate, either. All those supporters of candidates who actually ran from the get-go would boycott by staying home on election day, at best, or vote for Trump, at worst (from a DNC perspective).

Also, I don't think America is ready for a battle of rich white guys from NYC running for president, either. Trump has that market cornered. Plus, in a battle of personalities with Trump, which is important when running for president, 'personality' is a losing proposition for the bland BloomingIdiot. BloomingIdot is a humorless scold on steroids. Also, BloomngIdiot will not help in the down ticket Federal races; his coattails are way too short.

So anyone who can vote in open primaries, vote for BloomingIdiot. Your vote can help sink the Dems into the irrelevance they so richly deserve.

/My nickel (adjusted for inflation).

CA Mo Meets are a non-starter.

Most of us won't go there. I was born there, but am not welcome there, as my guns are not welcome there, either.

Even if it's not a "shooting event" Mo Meet, about 99% of those attending will want to travel and arrive, armed.

CA is right out for that.

Probably plenty of RV rental outfits in Lost Wages. If you have the time, taking your own RV is the way to go. But for a short-term, say one weekend, meetup on the far side of the country, fly out, rent an RV for the weekend, fly back, makes a lot of sense.

Choose the right place. I'd gladly fly in from the Lower 48.

I can travel there with (checked in) guns. Ammo, even.

Can't drive the ALCAN while so configured.

An Alaska Mo Meet, very carefully configured, could be a roaring success.

I for one, would happily spend the $ to attend.

And spend more for some good fishing, too.

But I'm only going there in hunting season for the hunting.

Too cold then otherwise, for anything but the hunting.

And sorry to disappoint the bear. I really AM there for the hunting.

Old Missus married Will the weaver.
Willam was a gay deceiver!

(familiar "lookaway" chorus)

But when Will put his arms around her,
He smiled as fierce as a 40-pounder!

(chorus)

Will's face was sharp as a butcher's cleaver,
But that did not seem to grieve her!

(chorus)

-end-

I might type some more of it later, but the above was all new to me.
