Ricky Gervais Savagely Spoofs Spoiled Brat Feminist Natalie Portman

At the Oscars, Natalie Portman staged a "silent protest" by wearing a bespoke Christian Dior cape emblazoned with the names of Unfairly Overlooked! female directors.

Portman, 38, attended the awards show wearing a black and gold Dior dress with a cape embroidered with the names of the female directors who were snubbed by the Academy: Lorene Scafaria (“Hustlers”), Lulu Wang (“The Farewell”), Greta Gerwig (“Little Women”), Mati Diop (“Atlantics”), Marianne Heller (“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”), Melina Matsoukas (“Queen & Slim”), Alma Har’el (“Honey Boy”) and Céline Sciamma (“Portrait of a Lady on Fire”).

Fellow spoiled-brat out-of-touch nutter Rose McGowan attacked Portman for... not "walking the walk" regarding female directors?

"I find Portman’s type of activism deeply offensive to those of us who actually do the work. I'm not writing this out of bitterness...

And this is not just about the money.

... I am writing out of disgust. I just want her and other actresses to walk the walk," McGowan said. "Natalie, you have worked with two female directors in your very long career- one of them was you. You have a production company that has hired exactly one female director- you."

But that's just normal Hollywood battiness and cattiness.

The real attack came from Ricky Gervais.

Gervais had previously tweeted, "I tried to warn them."

@rickygervais

I have nothing against the most famous people in the world using their privileged, global platform to tell the world what they believe. I even agree with most of it. I just tried to warn them that when they lecture everyday, hard working people, it has the opposite effect. Peace.

I was never big into Von Trier, but open to him. Elephant was good. All of his stuff was rather typical European art house stuff.

And then I watched Anti-Christ and swore to never watch another von Trier again.

I've since walked it back a bit and put Melancholia back in my Netflix DVD queue. I'll see it eventually.

But Anti-Christ...after the 30 minute mark, I said to myself, "There's no way I won't at least like this movie." I was very, very wrong. I despised it by the end. Despised. I don't feel that often with a movie.

1) Palpable concern among some Hse Dems from battleground states or representing swing districts about the impact of a potential nomination Sanders nomination “It’s bad,” said one freshman Dem from a swing district. “We are having conversations about how to deal with this.”

2) Freshman Hse Dem to Fox: "If (Sanders) is the nominee, we lose." Mbr said a Sanders nomination would cost Dems their state in the fall. Some voters would leave the top of the ticket blank

3) Two other vulnerable Democrats indicated that a Sanders nomination would almost certainly cede their states to President Trump, to say nothing of the impact on races down the ballot for the House and Senate.

4) To counter a possible Sanders nomination, One Democrat said they would try to hyper-focus on local issues as a counterbalance. But the lawmaker conceded that would be hard

5) What is unclear is how Dems are starting to grapple with the Sanders nominee potential. When asked if Dems would actively try to block Sanders or would try to “spin” things in such a way to remain viable, lawmakers offered no specifics. “We’re just starting,” said one Democrat

6) A Hse Dem from a swing state who does not represent a competitive district argued that it didn’t matter who the Democratic nominee was. This lawmaker said there was such concern about Trump that voters would be willing to support “anyone else” besides Trump – even Sanders.

7) Even as the Sanders alarm bells sounding among some Democrats, other Democratic sources note that the party has only allocated a tiny percentage of delegates. “It’s still so early,” said one source. “We just have to win,” said the source.

Multiple Democrats who could face competitive races this fall declined to speak on the record about Sanders, the impacts of impeachment and what it means for their candidacies. Some Dems were clearly uncomfortable being asked about this by the press today.

Writing is almost as bad. While watching Breaking Bad a few uears ago I noticed there were two types of episodes: one type where the story progressed and interesting things happened and another boring type with mostly family drama and lots of exposition. The latter type of episode was almost invariably written by a woman.

179 Just get on with it regarding the Oscars (that I don't care about). Stipulate "X" Oscars for women, "X" Oscars for gays, "X" Oscars for minorities...which must also be subdivided, based on ethnicity. 240 166 While watching Breaking Bad a few uears ago I noticed there were two types of episodes: one type where the story progressed and interesting things happened and another boring type with mostly family drama and lots of exposition. The latter type of episode was almost invariably written by a woman.
Posted by: Ghost of Lee Atwater

EXACTLY!

Movies written and directed by women almost invariable have this deadening inertia, where NOTHING HAPPENS plotwise. I often compare it to watching a little girl rearranging Barbies in her dollhouse. There is never any forward-motion to the plot, nor any "necessity" to what happens. It's just people either sitting still and talking, or purposely bipping and bopping from one place to another without the story being advanced. It's almost like they don't even know what a plot is. It's like a cargo-cult version of movemaking -- they imitate the form successfully, but with the slightest inking of the underlying structure that makes a movie work -- like cargo cultists building an accurate reproduction of a jet airplane...out of bamboo. Then they wonder why it won't fly.

My question...does anyone know any particular Muslim practices for the Remembrance event the university will have? Any Do's and Don'ts? I'm sure by now he has been returned to his home for burial. Such a sad loss of a fine young man.

Directing a film is hard, especially today.

Anything blockbuster realm takes a bare minimum of two years to go from nothing to finished product, and directors work sixteen hour days seven days a week from the beginning to the end. They're directing the course of production from script to pre-production to production and to everything in post. The final few weeks of post-production often require directors to work 20+ hour days.

Women who wish to have families rarely want to go through that.

309 Again, Biden did not "collapse". He started out a failure. Polling was just tea leaves, it does not count. Only the actual elections count and he's been a failure from day one there. I wish people would stop saying that collapsed bit.

Biden has never been a strong campaigner, but it's pretty clear that Adam Schiff torpedoed any shot he might have had at the nomination.

* Although I have no reason to expect that he knows anything about my industry, he clearly did some studying and boned up on the major relevant topics. he wove some of those concepts into his act, again humorously.

Less good female poets. Dickinson and Bradstreet stink. Plath isn't my cup of tea. Elizabeth Barrett Browning is great, though.

I'm no big fan of Christie's mysteries. She plotted well and was famous for her twists and surprises. For sheer ingenuity, though, she can't match her contemporaries Ellery Queen and John Dickson Carr. But they've been almost forgotten, and she is still in print. Grrrr.

She did have me liking one particular character in one of her later stories, though -- guy reminded me of Dr. McCoy. Then he turns out to be the murderer. Good job.

I guess I don't really understand how a starfucker can be degraded by another; they're doing that to themselves.

I'm not the one who says that. Rose McGowan is the one who believes that.

That said, you can still degrade a star fucker.

471 OT watched Shazam last night, best DC universe of recent vintage by far.

I didn't like how different the teenager and the superhero were in temperament.

Billy was a moody, closed off teenager. Shazam was a goofy, Tom Hanks from Big character. Like Zachary Levi was trying to play a six year old in a superhero's body, not a troubled teenager.

So here's a thing. I was listening to a podcast where a Dominican priest was talking about St. Thomas Aquinas and his contribution to metaphysics (yes I'm a nerd), and he made the point that in greek philosophy up through Aristotle, humility and charity were not considered virtues. The ancients understood bravery, courage, temperence, honesty, but it took Christianity to really recognize that humility was a virtue towards one should strive. Without God, if you are a virtuous person, you shouldn't be humble, because you actually just are better than most people.

I suspect that because God has been removed from our culture today, humility is falling back by the wayside as a recognized virtue.

473 Ethan Frome is my least favorite, Age of Innocence and House of Mirth are much better. I liked Death Comes for the Archbishop, but I loved My Antonia and Oh, Pioneers!
Posted by: CN at February 13, 2020 02:11 PM (ONvIw)

I had the massive displeasure of having to read Ethan Frome twice in high school (changed schools, it was in a different part of the curriculum).

Absolutely detested it. Never had any desire to read much else from that author, or even that era.

It was an attempt to blend the modern angsty gritty Shazam with the old fashioned gee whiz fun Captain Marvel. Which made it oddly uneven, I agree.

493 Ford had to land on a golf course when his plane was in trouble and he couldn't make it back to Santa Monica Airport in 2015.

In 1999 Ford had an accident in a Bell Helicopter where he allowed the chopper to drop too low and it was unable to power back up and they crashed.

In 2017 was the incident at John Wayne Airport whereby he mistook instructions of where he was to land and almost collided with a passenger jet waiting to take off with 111 people on board.

But I wouldn't call him incompetent.
