Saturday Morning Coffee Break

a8713fd0-7979-4f82-b991-5a91946e2790.png

I don't have that problem, coffee = black & bitter just like my soul.

***

Good morning Morons. Here's hoping your weekend goes well. Here are a few stories that didn't get their fair share of attention here at the AoSHQ this past week.

  • I think Bubba will be making sweet music with him.

  • Once again top floor and/or top bunk is always best.

  • I call Bull Shit.

  • Do any of these carpool tricks works? Yeah, didn't think so.

  • LOOK AT ME, I guess it is Saturday morning.

  • NASA is looking for a few good astronauts.

  • Give a man a garbage can, and you'll house him for a day.

  • My kind of government agency.

  • Not my kind of government agency.

    ***

Rules? Not many on this open thread. No running with sharp objects and play nice with one another. Oh yeah one more thing, have a nice weekend!!!

10 Pete Buttigieg Fundraiser Interrupted by 'Queers Against Pete' Protesters

However, being gay is not enough to earn the support of LGBTQIA communities. We cannot in good conscience allow Mayor Pete to become the nominee without demanding that he address the needs and concerns of the broader Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual communities."

Some of the group's concerns include Buttigieg's lack of support for canceling student loan debt, his opposition to a fully-realized Medicare for All plan and free universal public college.

I met him several times. He used to be a guest speaker at a National Guard youth camp. Remarkable man.

I particularly remember interviewing him about the aircraft he flew - which one he liked best.

They trained on the P-40, moved to the P-47 and then got the P-51. The P-40 was meh, the P-47 handled like a brick, but the P-51 was a sportscar. His eyes lit up as he described its handling.

I asked him if he had a particular memory that stuck with him and he said that they were escorting a raid and the sky was utterly clear. Painfully bright and the bomber stream they were escorting seemed to go on forever. Hundreds of aircraft, gleaming in the sunlight.

He said he paused over the spectacle and thought there would never be anything like it again. He looked at me and said the power was just unimaginable and he felt a little bad for the Germans because they were totally overwhelmed.

    Very cool.

There's an article over at Townhall by Vespa on the similarities of Trump and Sanders with respect to support, enthusiasm, etc. I don't agree with that really. While Sanders has enthralled ignorant millennials, I don't think he is anywhere close to mesmerizing the rest of the country with communism in amounts necessary to win a general election. Still, I have to wonder where the flashing red sirens from Wall Street are on his candidacy. If they're out there, I haven't seen them.

While in a big box home improvement store yesterday, we ran into a salesman, that once we established that we did not need his product, abruptly asked if we had ever heard of the Tuskegee Airmen.

As a black man, he had caught the movie 'Red Tails' on TV and stated that he had never heard of them before. Spent about 15 minutes in deep discussion concerning racism, pride, facing adversity and such.

87 Eris, not sure from where your book trip commences but there's a great used-book store in Ann Arbor, an hour or so from Lansing. West End Books, on Liberty between Main and Ashley, is a treasure. Be sure to check out the back room where the old maps and other large items are displayed for sale - including what appear to be original Edward Curtis photographs.

You'll also only be mere blocks from Zingerman's Deli, another delightful place worthy of a pilgrimage.

The downside of Ann Arbor is that it's a leftist freak show in full bloom. Darling Ann and I live an hour south of there, so we'll go for concerts at The Ark and pastrami at Zingerman's; we always leave Ann Arbor laughing and shaking our heads, trying to imagine just how proud Mom and Dad must be of little Emma and Seth with their ink and noserings and Bernie stickers...

Conveniently left out of the discussion entirely, the elephant in the room, the school itself sits on a $2 Billion endowment. If "college should be free"; why not make the schools pay for it? Why should the people who don't go to college have to pay for it?

    Something for Nothing!

Everyone in the Progressive movement has from day one offered up their rights and freedom for a free bowl of porridge.

Now the trend it to make your tribe the most aggrieved of all so that you get to the front of the line when the handouts starts.

When your tribe does not get pushed to the front of the line then you must created a new tribe. A tribe that has such a select group of needs so different than anyone else's human condition that your group can asked other groups to open up an aisle so you can move to the front.

What all of the people miss is that they have now lost their individuality, it has been surrendered to the tribe and the status of the tribe.

The Airmen are remarkable and the ones I spoke to dislike the movies made about them. The one in the 90s they especially hate because none of them committed suicide and they took racism as a given.

I refused to watch the George Lucas atrocity, but one thing most accounts leave out is that the Air Corps set crazy high standards to get into the program. All of the Airmen had college degrees in an age where that was super rare among black men and most had advanced degrees as well.

They were also in tip-top physical shape.

Thus you had a super-elite pool of recruits who produced super-elite pilots. Which is why they are awesome.

As for the veneral disease thing, that's mostly lies and propaganda. They didn't infect people and the "treatment" of the time was often worse than the natural course of the disease.

Which is what the experiment showed.

(Seriously. One treatment was to inject a mercury compound into the urethra.)

Even there???? Jeez. Appleton has a couple of small colleges where I maybe could work, and so I expected there would be some leftiness. When I looked at house prices on realtor dot com for the bedroom communities around Appleton, I was astonished (pleasantly!). You can get a lot more for your dollar than you can in Da Swamp. Better to just arbitrarily set their price and force them to live with it.

To be offset, I'd hope, by the much more reasonable car insurance rates. When I signed up with the Lizard People again this month, I asked what my rate would be in the zip code for Appleton. They said $340/6 months. I dream of that; I'm paying $800/6 months now, and Flo's Bros, whom I just left, were demanding $1072/6 months. And I am an older driver with a good record who drives a Buick sedan, not a sports car.

Fifteen miles from Appleton, if I were to work there, doesn't sound bad at all. I haven't the energy to deal with a major fixer-upper; wherever I move has got to be fairly comfortable when I move in, i.e., roof, floors, and heat. Yes, and I get tired of them whining in the comments.

There's so much good news right now, and yet all they do is pick apart stuff and obsess about it. It's like the a spoiled brat rich kid whose pissed because the trim on the Beemer he got for his 16th birthday isn't the right shade.

Trump is fundamentally reshaping the strategic landscape and all they can do is wring their hands about Lt. Col. Bearclaw.

Or pretend that Roger Stone wasn't a dirty shifty guy, which he was. I get that it's annoying that their dirty shifty operators skate (sometimes, Avenatti isn't), but I don't have the time or energy to spend pissing about it.

Big picture is the US is stronger than at any point since the 80s.

Even more - we're just getting started! Think about all the jobs that are going to shift back to the US because China's been exposed as fundamentally unreliable. All the pharma factories are going to have to come home. Auto parts, steel, you name it.

A know a guy who says that his plant won't even take new orders because their backlog is so big. Bidding wars for blue collar jobs!

    Sooo much winning.

I agree that all indications point to Bloomberg as the preferred candidate. And, that is scary. As to your black Mayor endorsement, he's buying those, 35 in the last couple of years through his Bloomberg Philanthropic entity. He spent $110 million in 2018 Congressional races and purchased 24 new D seats. He pretty much turned the House. That's why pulling Bernie over the edge NOW is so important. Only if Bernie is the clear winner in the primaries can we avoid Bloomberg, who will have the money to very much impact the LIV.

262 I think people who are concerned about unequal justice, like Ace himself, are not " on the fainting couch". People realize than an unindicted McCabe can easily accept an appointment in a democratic administration and will keep his law license. An unpunished Lt Bearclaw will go to AWC and could end up as General Bearclaw.

Roger Stone might be the sleaziest man alive, but even sleazebags deserve a fair trial without a jury determined to convict, and with prosecutors who don't misrepresent sentencing plans to their supervisors.

Some people may not want to read negative comments, fair enough. Don't. I skip the Steiner will come wish casting more than I used to.

To point out Barr's inadequacies is not to say the economy is not great. But economies change, always have. The perception of very unequal justice is separate from that.

Deadtree Philly Inquirer has front page story about Trump's tweet yesterday in response to Barr, in which he asserts his legal right to ask Barr to intervene in a legal proceeding. I'm kind of perplexed about this though. I was told by commenters on this very smart military blog that Barr had effectively silenced DJT by complaining to ABC news.

    Go figure.

I hate to put the old Indian sign on you, but you and I seem to have had a few similar experiences in this area.

One of the reasons I so enjoy going off on the stuttering losers who blame all our ills on "Mile-Niles" is that I have known so many devoted lemmings in my age group, and even an older cohort. Some of the same pearl-clutchers who have to sing an Ubi Sunt every day because they just now discovered that "The Country I Was Born in Is Now Gone! Gone Forevah" just never got around enough, until recently I guess, to know that there has always been evil, always been silliness, always been stupidity.

And dammit, being in, or having been in, the military does not insulate you from being a total political doofus. In the 70's I met more pissant socialists just out of the military than just out of college. E's and O's, both.

The socialist/communist revolutions in Germany and Russia a hundred years ago? All began in the ranks. Just being "in" does not make you "right" or even "good."

282 I think people who are concerned about unequal justice, like Ace himself, are not " on the fainting couch".

I think some people follow this stuff, to the point of being genuinely obsessed with it, and they misunderstand what they do and don't know about these matters.

What's amazing is how much what people "know" is filtered through the same damned media that they're otherwise complaining about.

No offense to lawyers, but I don't think of them as human, and I don't mean that as any kind of insult. What I mean is, they don't think through things like normal humans do, and sometimes the law dictates a decision that doesn't look right, to non-lawyers.

And on both sides of the Great Trump Divide, there are people who law-fight, and there are people who only want their side to win, always. So there's like a four point scrum going on, with the lawyers doing their thing on both sides, and the out for blood types doing theirs, with the inevitable result of nobody ever being happy with the results, ever.

And lest it needs to be emphasized, there reason this is the way things ARE, is because lawyers decided to make it this way.

    It didn't have to be.

But it's sorta like the old class systems that operated in other parts of the world for eons. You either belong or you don't, but with lawyering, you aren't born into it (for the most part). 336 Example of Unhappy Legal Knowledge - when people say "there is no equality under the law any more", a practicing lawyer will reply, if he's being honest, with "yeah, that's any day ending in a "Y' in every courtroom in this country." Equality under the Law is like a bright shining star up there in the sky, an Aspriational Goal we all wish we could reach - but courts are all stuck down here on Earth, and are run by fallen and broken humans who never can truly achieve any of those lofty and beautiful goals.

I've been an observer in many criminal courtrooms, where I watch the thing unfold like a well rehearsed play.

One of the things I noticed is, some chump will stand before the judge and say "Your honor I didn't do it," or whatever. It's like the judge doesn't even hear the words. The process keeps moving relentlessly toward him admitting to all those little things he's gotta admit to, if he wants to see daylight, and he walks away, not feeling like anything resembling justice happened.

Then another chump walks up, but THIS chump has a lawyer, and the lawyer says "Your honor, my client didn't do it," and a whole different outcome occurs.

It's almost as if damn near the EXACT same words aren't heard by the judge, if it's not a lawyer saying them, but if it is... groovy, have a nice day.

I wondered why Barr would select Jensen, the USA from EDMO, when he had all those nearby USA's from which to choose. Could it possibly be bc of the FD-302 controversy: the claims the original no longer exists, the prosecutor's "mixup" on whether Pientka or Strzok wrote the 302, and other irregularities that Jensen, the former FBI agent for 10 years, might have some insight?

341 To a law teacher, "think like a lawyer" does not mean "learn to be a cynical little snot with connections" regardless of what the guys at the barbershop say.

It is supposed to mean "say nothing that cannot be backed up with case references and precedent." The Kid had a couple of "pre-JAG" courses at the Academy where a skillful instructor (who, as it turned out, was also a cynical snot) about drove everybody nuts as he required case cites and precedent for things like "The sun came up this morning" and "We The People." It was a hell of an education, about what to expect in that line of country. May have dissuaded some from The Law as a career.

They must not teach it anymore, or someone would have said it: the beginning of an engineering education was learning to "think like an engineer," and surely you must know that is not the same as thinking "like a scientist."
When I was That Age, we used a popular text called "Learning to Philosophize." Now that everyone has learned to cherish the feeling of shit rubbed into their knuckles, of course, you couldn't put a gun to our heads.

353 But it's sorta like the old class systems that operated in other parts of the world for eons. You either belong or you don't, but with lawyering, you aren't born into it (for the most part). Still, it's a cast iron caste system, where members of the guild get theirs, and the rest of us... we sorta wallow around in THEIR system, understanding some of it, but often only to the point of realizing we'll never really understand it.

The only defense (it's not much of one, really) is that throughout history, ALL societies fall into this, no matter how they start off. So it seems that this indicative of a basic flaw in human nature, that we can never live up to our ideals. None of us can, or ever have, with the exception of a few people we've called "Saints" over the centuries. It's probably why all human societies build to a peak, then fall and are burned, and then have to rise out of the ashes, over and over again. I have no doubt that we'll fall and burn, I just hope it can be put off for a few decades until I'm not around.

And although it's easy to point a finger at the people running the system, the ones that are even worse are the Public who sees Law and Politics as nothing more than entertainment, the crowds who thought the OJ Trial was the best TV miniseries they ever watched, the masses who couldn't lift a finger to do anything that involved actual work to make their situation better. They're the ones that enable everything else.

And if you knew the full story, you'd probably find out that that particular lawyer had that particular Judge over to his house for dinner and drinks a couple weeks ago, and presented him a with a completely legal $200,000 campaign contribution that he'd collected from his office pals. And that there was no need to rehearse anything before that particular trial because everyone involved knew that they were running a very time honored script, and they all had their parts to play.

When an outsider pops up and tries to change the lines in the script, it's like a bad actor in a stage play. Everyone else ignores it and just goes on with their lines. The final decision was written long before the play ever began.

What makes for uplifting trials is when some lawyer is actually clever enough to bust the script, and it doesn't happen often. But it does happen occasionally.

When the landlord's lawyer shows up, spouting law talk, I've seen the judge stop them in their tracks, turn to the poor, downtrodden guy, and ask him to explain in plain talk, just what happened.

    397 BurtTC and Tom Servo,

The thing that lawyers and judges for that matter do not understand or are willing to ignore is that justice in society is like a tectonic plate butted up against another. One plate is that of the elites, the other of the common people.

Normally there is some movement in society along the fault lines of society that relieve stress. But, when the plates become locked as they have essentially for the last 40 years or so, the pressure builds up. At some point, the distance between reality and political beliefs of the general populace become too divergent and something snaps in society.

The first to go out of power, like in the French revolution, were the lawyers and judges because they were viewed as instruments of injustice and the king's control by the general populace. For over a hundred years after the French Revolution, and even to this day, judges' role in French society has been circumscribed by the pejorative 'government by the judges' (translated). There is a reason that the French resort to street justice as compared to the Brits. The French are very cynical about their legal and political system for redress.

The same thing happens if you have the elites trying to suppress the general populace. Lawyers and judges are in the way so you get horrors like the People's Courts in Germany during the Nazi era or the Soviet and Chinese show courts for traitors. Or even the Star Chambers in Merrie Old England.

Right now, the law and its practitioners have departed so much from the common people's understanding of the written law, we will get some sort of Reformation for better or ill. From some of the forums that I frequent, I see the frustration and anger rising when judges, legislators, and lawyers deny the plain written texts of the Constitution and statutes.

Everyone knows what happened when King George III departed from previous understandings and written agreements with colonies that had been granted by his predecessors. The King and his judges and colonial administration lawyers were discredited due to the discrepancy between the written law and what the King felt was his due.

A reckoning of sorts is coming and Trump represents an almost last ditch attempt to steer the ship of state from the shoals before an shipwreck. To the extent that the Deep State is fighting Trump taking the tiller, it appears either the Deep State is drunk on power or purposefully wants a societal shipwreck.

Something has gotta give and the result, I fear, will be the political and societal equivalent of an earthquake.

Injustice, in time, perpetuated by a legal system of the ruling class, eventually causes the population to seek justice by other means.

Posted by: whig at February 15, 2020 11:10 AM (EUDB2)

398 It's almost as if damn near the EXACT same words aren't heard by the judge, if it's not a lawyer saying them, but if it is... groovy, have a nice day.
Posted by: BurtTC at February 15, 2020 10:42 AM (hku12)

399 I had to turn off power at the river place. They haven't paid anything in months. We've been paying $200 a month but they ran up a $300 bill last month. I called the PUD to go back out.

There's such a thing as going to a professional when you need a job done, but the fact that you haven't a hope in hell if you don't have a lawyer when you go to trial shows that there's something wrong with the legal system.

Lawyers write the laws, and they do it in such a way that you can't follow the law or challenge the law unless you pay a lawyer to interpret it for you and guide you through the machinery -- which they also design.

    429 409 Blonde Morticia,
I have a passing familiarity with the law and statutes, yet I would not represent myself in a criminal trial. That is because you are buying into the local legal network with your lawyer as much as anything who has a local understanding of how the law will be applied in your neighborhood.

But, such a system is built on sand and eventually the system is rationalized periodically.

One of my current projects deals with Roman law and it is interesting how eventually Justinian actually made it a death penalty offense to add "gloss" to his code. That lasted until his death and then lawyers went right back to issuing commentaries, revised understandings, etc.

The U.S. states codified a lot of the common law when the common law precedents began to overwhelm the system. Now, the common law understanding of those codified statutes is overwhelming the system. The system is due for another rationalization where the written law will once again correspond with societal expectations.

    439 nice, whig.

The British and French aristocracy didn't seem to know they were playing with fire. Do ours?

There is a lot of ruin in a nation, but not an infinite amount.

440 394 Couldn't the same be said of all viruses? You are usually contagious before symptoms are present.

Nope. One of l reasons bat flu is causing such levels of concern.

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure this is generally correct. I think with most flus and colds a person can be contagious for a few days before becoming symptomatic. I checked the WHO FAC site and the new corona has an incubation period (time between infection and symptoms) of 1-12 days, with a median of 5-6 days. Maybe the length of incubation is unusually long, and that is the concern. But it does happen with every virus.
