Grandma Moses lived, IIRC, near Mount Kisco, NY, where publisher, editor and bon vivant Bennett Cerf lived, and he more or less started the vogue for her work when he saw some of her paintings on display at a local fair, bought them and gave them out as Christmas presents.

Posted by: pep at February 14, 2020 09:34 AM (T6t7i) Primitivism does seem to be experiencing a bit of a revival among decorators. I stopped by a furniture store and saw it prominently displayed in the faux-rooms. I know one can get real folk art, but rarely real "fine art", so I am empathetic. I feel like there's some correlation between relatively weak technical painters and the desire to try to cram more stuff in. Look at all the different groups of people in this scene. It's like the artist is making up for their lack of mastery in skill by trying to cram extra stuff into the painting. I would imagine a painting titled The Thunderstorm by one of the greats would have like the clouds, the shack, the landscape, and maybe one person in it.

I usually don't care much for 'folk art'. It may be interesting, charming, or clever but is it art? In this case, I think it is. (Trees)
This painting captures the feel of an approaching thunder storm. I like the quality of the colors, especially the greens, and how they show the dimming light under the clouds. I also like the way the different figures react to the weather: some rushing to get things under cover, youngsters unaware of the possible danger, and others trying to get in some activity. While it takes a moment, Grandma caught the effect of the leading wind on the trees bending and swaying a bit. Posted by: JTB at February 14, 2020 09:47 AM (7EjX1) 97

Welp, over 100 comments, OT rant:
So, I'm trying to sell Mom's house, because Mom needs the money to pay for her care. My name is on the title to the house, Mom's bank accounts, complete POA, etc. Offer for house came through, was accepted, escrow started, everything is going well, right? Wrong. Got a phone call from the title company. "Yeah, you can't sell the house, because we're afraid you're going to rip off your mom, so, either mom comes to closing, which also necessitates redoing every single scrap of paperwork, which I assume includes the original offer, or, get a letter from her doctor attesting to her incompetency." Uhhh, what part of "My name is on her accounts, along with on the title to the house, and POA don't you understand?" This is the last thing I need and mom needs it even less. And no, the letter from the doctor is a non-starter. /rant. So, how is everyone else doing?

One of Ellery Queen's later novels, from the early '50s, features a self-taught "folk" or "primitive" artist, an elderly woman who lives in New England and "paints what she sees." When she's murdered, that detail turns out to be crucial. The novel doesn't star Ellery himself, but it is a top-notch mystery and a grand examination of lynch mob mentality.

Posted by: Kris at February 14, 2020 09:58 AM (OyyDO) Brake "fade" is defined as brakes losing their effectiveness as the drums and linings get very hot. Descending a mountain grade, for example. I doubt that is what you experienced. My guess? Some problem with the power brake booster, causing it to not work. You still have brakes, but have to put a lot more leg in it. Second guess? Old, water-contaminated brake fluid that has frozen, and plugged a brake line. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 14, 2020 10:06 AM (LxWV7) 210

Of all the cars that you wouldn't expect to have hinky brakes in the cold, the world rallye competitor Audis (GF had a 5+5) were absolutely scary.
Rears were drums. Condensation from the atmosphere, in the garage, would freeze the shoes to the drums. Dealership had to slip dollies under and flat-bed it to be thawed. Later, the emergency brake cable liner froze to itself. And, a rock - just a #2 berm stone, not a damn dornick - flew up from the road, wedged between two of the coils of the spring, and snapped the suspension. That put me off Audi for a generation. World-beating Master Race your kiszka. White Fragility is what they were. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at February 14, 2020 10:15 AM (8IOEj) 260
Water in brake lines freezes. Have your brakes bled by somebody who knows what they are doing on your model/year car.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air (is hygroscopic). Freezing in winter, boiling in summer under hard use causes unintended defecation. I always use spendy DOT5 synthetic when possible, especially on motorcycles. Might be old info by now. Posted by: klaftern at February 14, 2020 10:15 AM (RuIsu) 261

And, if we sell our house ever, we'll be moving into a new house with more carpet and she just can't deal with that level of allergens. My husband didn't put me on his bank account. He still had his late wife's name on it. I went in to close it, with his death certificate and my marriage license. I was told I needed a copy of HER death certificate and some unnamed form from the county. I ordered her death certificate but have to contact the bank again. I'm not playing guess that form.

Years ago, when the different "media" of brake fluid were not "compatible," you had to flush the brake lines and cylinders with pure lab alcohol before putting the DOT 5 in. So, I got some stainless-steel-sleeved calipers for my favorite, got the purest alcohol available (but it was only 190 proof), and went to town.
Two seasons later we had those apart and it looked like hell in there. I talked to an old hand and he said, yeah they do that. Every drop or pocket of air, or old fluid with a trace of water, ended up being gradually (one pump at a time) pushed to the farthest point, the "slave" cylinder. Either extreme temperatures or a "cocked" brake piston would have caused a sudden loss of braking pressure on that corner only. I was lucky. Just a reminder of how complicated hydraulic brakes can be. Eddie Rickenbacker put a car on the market in the early 20's that was the first to have them, and other makers ran a "whispering campaign" that those damn things would never be safe. The industry standard was rear wheel brakes only, actuated by adjustable rods. Considering the wooden spoke wheels and non-blacked tires in use, that was about all they could handle. Each pair of bolts will be a different size and type, necessitating dozens of tools. And there will be required at least one specialty tool just to remove or adjust one fairly common part. That specialty tool will not be available in the replicator and will be very expensive.

Poor cat. And it was also cruely declawed. Feel sorry for it.
Posted by: Sooner at February 14, 2020 * * I agree that a cat should never be declawed. But my late black cat Marie-Antoinette had been declawed before Linda adopted her, and she did not seem to be in any pain, enjoyed her life, and was the happiest cat (as well as the smartest) I've ever known. She did scrub her paws against rough surfaces, exactly as if she still had claws. Maybe the paws itched, or maybe she secretly hoped the claws would grow back. She's been allergic to the cat since she got it, but now we think the new baby is allergic to her too. And, if we sell our house ever, we'll be moving into a new house with more carpet and she just can't deal with that level of allergens. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, 003 with a License to Kill at February 14, 2020 10:15 AM (q80AH) ************ A friend of mine who was highly allergic to cats stayed at my house for a week due to a hurricane we had. I have a cat and dogs, but she was desperate. Her allergies never flared up and it was because I have area rugs over tile and wood floors throughout my house. When she moved back into her house she ripped up the carpet and installed wood floors. She now owns 3 cats and 2 dogs and never has a problem with allergies. "No, no, the name of the store is 'Ac-ME,'" I replied. Another puzzled pause and he very slowly but confidently responded, "Ac-you." If the 23rd-century Germans build the starship Enterprise,
Back when British Labour finally Triumphed, and forced the merger of NVT (slightly after BSA went bankrupt just as they took the checkered flag at Daytona), they made the cutest ad, with an astronaut in a spacesuit with the Union Jack on it on the surface of some other planet. That caused all of us apprentices to run a years-long game of what the British space program would look like. They'd be lithe and lovely, handle and brake breathtakingly, and leak oil right across the known universe. They would smoke when they ran, but the smoke would smell like castor oil. James Bond's time is past. To want to watch a Bond movie, you have to want to believe that there are is a group of secretive and highly competent people working in the government to protect you from the Bad Guys. While these people may do morally questionable things, we still have to believe that the Bad Guys are unambiguously evil, and that the Good Guys are still at their heart, good.
People don't trust in the altruism or the competency of our government any more, and we're not allowed to make Bad Guys that aren't white dudes, so it's very hard to make a relevant and believable plot set in the current day. So you have to turn James Bond into Jason Borne, or Ethan Hawke where it's the one guy working against the bad parts of his own government. Which is what they did with Craig, and it can work, but then he's not James Bond any more. It's just another generic action/thriller. I don't get the hatred for Craig as Bond.
His movies were the first to take Bond as a character seriously since On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Ever since, he's been secret agent man with an accent. There have been fun movies in that long run, but it was always rather shallow. Casino Royale actually had Bond go through an actual arc. He became much more than just secret agent man with a British accent. Quantum of Solace is a mess (because of the writer's strike and a skeleton of a first draft that they filmed from), but what's there is at least interesting for Bond. He works through his rage. It's not entirely successful, but it's something. Skyfall is Bond learning to deal with the past. How to operate when he's been wronged. He and Silva are mirror images. Silva goes for revenge against M. Bond simply goes back to do his duty. It's kind of M's movie more than Bond's but Bond is strong, uses elements of his past (like the Aston Martin from Goldfinger and his childhood home) to successfully fight off the more modern Silva. Bond was interesting for those movies. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, 003 with a License to Kill at February 14, 2020 11:03 AM (q80AH) 532

The first 2 episodes were pretty good. I wasn't totally wild about some of the changes but I was ready for more. Then "DP" morphed into the gayest thing since Guy Richie changed his name to Gay Richie and took the Gay Train to Gay Town and made a movie titled, "The Gay Gentlemen". The problem wasn't that Negative Man was teh ghey (whatevs). It was that most of the series devolved into Gay Negative Man's Gay Problems that had pretty much zero to do with the overall plot. If you find gay romance particularly compelling, it was probably great. Otherwise, I don't watch a fucking superhero movie for social instruction. Yeesh. Posted by: Anachronda at February 14, 2020 * * Timothy Dalton. His two films I don't recall well, but the first, Living Daylights, I enjoyed in the theatre. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at February 14, 2020 11:15 AM (Ejm1K) 578

Then Bond shouldn't be a character, just an archetype on which to hang action set pieces.
If that's all you want from Bond, fine, have fun with Roger Moore. But the idea that it's invalid to take an existing character and add dimension to him is weird. I mean, it's not like they're making him someone he's not. He's still the badass spy who beds beautiful women and does awesome things. There's just more to him than that now. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, 003 with a License to Kill at February Bond was never a bad ass spy. He was a spy that engaged in some bad assery when necessary. He was an archetype. What woke Bond has done with Craig is not that different from vandalizing the canon that sjws do with other things. Posted by: not so at February 14, 2020 11:19 AM (HALdu) 581
I don't get the hatred for Craig as Bond.
. . . Bond was interesting for those movies. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, 003 with a License to Kill at February 14, 2020 11:03 AM (q80AH) I don't think it's hatred of Craig AS Bond, I think it's dislike of Craig himself, who always gives the impression to me of thinking he is better than the role, and that the Franchise is lucky to have picked him instead of any one of 30 other actors who would shine as Bond. I just don't like him personally. He does a great job with the role, however. Posted by: Sharkman at February 14, 2020 11:19 AM (Hn8E7) 582
in 'The Gentlemen', I noticed Guy Ritchie had a poster for Man from UNCLE on his wall.
It was directed by Guy Ritchie. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at February 14, 2020 11:23 AM (8IOEj) Posted by: JT at February 14, 2020 11:23 AM (arJlL) 584

New Texas Tribune poll out has Trump ahead of Sanders by only 2 pts (47-45).
Trump will lose WI, MI and PA if that's the case. Posted by: ggreg at February 14, 2020 12:04 PM (045k4) 586
I like the painting. It reminds me the colonial portraits done by the local sign painter - crude, but the character comes across quite powerfully. The primitive composition and the dark, threatening palette remind me of the paintings of Henri Rousseau. It's not quite as surreal, with fewer elements of fantasy and the weird; but I get the feeling that nothing is quite as it appears - that something dark is hiding just around the corner. It's crude, but it's also good.

I agree with you. When I first saw it this morning I was viewing a very small crummy phone screen. I'm on a desktop PC, and it's even better in this rendition. Posted by: kallisto at February 14, 2020 01:31 PM (DJFLF) 588
