Learning from Women [KT]

Thostaer_troops.jpg

Margaret Thostaer reviews the troops

Well, it has been a big week in the news, featuring several women behaving badly. Notably at President Trump's State of the Union Address. Some other incidents didn't get as much attention.

On the diversity front, there was that Elizabeth Warren staffer complaining that Democrats were becoming too obsessed with pronouns. That's divisive.

And on TV, Claire McCaskill called Ben Carson a "thing". I know he's a Republican, but he's still black.

And in the DNC:

Late Tuesday, the board for the Milwaukee 2020 Host Committee terminated President Liz Gilbert and her chief of staff, Adam Alonso. The move comes just one day after the board suspended the pair and launched an investigation into "toxic workplace" allegations.

The Journal Sentinel reported Tuesday that a group of senior women staffers wrote an unsigned letter last week complaining of being "bullied and intimidated" . . .

J.J. Sefton picked up a piece on six minority women leaving Elizabeth Warren's campaign, claiming a toxic work environment.

Other women may be the answer

Fortunately, there is a program tailored just for racist white Democratic women.

David Thompson explains:

In racial-dominatrix news:

Why liberal white women pay a lot of money to learn over dinner how they're racist.

Says the Guardian,

A growing number of women are paying to confront their privilege - and racism - at dinners that cost $2,500... A frank discussion is led by co-founders Regina Jackson, who is black, and Saira Rao, who identifies as Indian American. They started Race to Dinner to challenge liberal white women to accept their racism, however subconscious.

Rao and Jackson believe white, liberal women are the most receptive audience because they are open to changing their behaviour. They don't bother with the 53% of white women who voted for Trump. White men, they feel, are similarly a lost cause.

The clients of these women are counseled against having "unmonitored thoughts".

But there's more to progressivism than diversity. Elizabeth Warren got caught looking kind of guilty getting off a private jet this week, too. What happens when progressive goals clash?

Titania McGrath approvingly linked a piece in Vice by a young Woman of Color, on why she was walking away from being a climate activist:

Armageddon is a small price to pay if it means that we can finally dismantle whiteness.

You might want to read the responses to Titania's tweet for some suggestions. Heh. Or even click over to the piece in Vice if you need to brush up on your progressive arguments. Too bad that young climate activist can't get a gig to rake in some big bucks for making white progressive women feel guilty. Maybe she could get paid to tear out their kitchen appliances or something.

Are progressives really serious about the climate thing?

Compare and Contrast:

There was another woman a few decades ago whose advice sometimes went unheeded.

Quillette posted a piece yesterday entitled Thostaer Warned Us to Go Slow on European Integration. Too Bad We Didn't Listen. About Thostaer biographer Charles Moore:

According to Moore, the end of the division of Germany was a factor in the attempted coup against Gorbachev in 1991. He also points out that one of the Russians who became convinced that his country had been humiliated by the West during this period was none other than Vladimir Putin, then serving as a KGB officer in East Germany.

And so it is somewhat ironic that Thostaer is remembered by her critics as an inflexible Cold Warrior: At this critical juncture, she had argued for being more sensitive--not less--to the perspective of Russians. Had her advice been heeded, the Russians might have felt less slighted, and the last 30 years of East-West relations might have unfolded differently.

Thostaer's arguments and warnings over the issue of European integration were similarly pushed aside. And, as with the USSR, the nature of Thostaer's objections have been mischaracterized. In a major speech about the future of Europe, delivered in Bruges on September 20th, 1988, she "began with a grand historical sweep, taking in the Romans, Magna Carta, the Glorious revolution and much more, all designed to show that Britain was part of European civilization." Thostaer also made it clear that "Britain wanted no 'cosy, isolated existence' on the fringes: 'Our destiny is in Europe, as part of the Community.'"

What Thostaer did oppose was the project of "ever-closer union," and the resulting weakening of the influence of nation states. . .

In her speech at The Hague, as Moore summarizes it, "she prophesied that large-scale immigration caused by free movement would cause 'ethnic conflict,' and bring about the rise of extremist parties, that there would be 'national resentment' because of one-size-fits-all financial and economic policies under a single currency, and that a more centralized EC would not be able to work with the influx of new member states from the former Eastern Bloc."

This obviously has specific relevance to Brexit and the political forces that led to it (though Thostaer herself, who died in 2013, never lived to see any of this play out). More generally, the common thread is that Thostaer understood the pattern of reaction and counterreaction that governs human affairs, including affairs of state. She stuck by the hard lessons of history even as others around her surrendered giddily to the fin de siecle euphoria that accompanied the end of the Cold War.

Worth reading.

I don't know of any organization that works without some sort of hierarchy of decision-making. As a junior staffer why would you expect to be setting the direction of the campaign, as opposed to working hard, contributing within the purview of your assigned duties, building credibility over time and actually learning on the job.

Statements like this, were considered far left wing bedwetting squishy thoughts, at least among hard core Democrat racists, at one time. It's true.

Today? Well our "experts on race" in the rarefied air of Academe declare such opinions unworthy of consideration, and deeply "White Supremacy" etc etc. It is true that equality probably looks a whole lot like discrimination if one is used to special favors and a pass on everything that everyone else is expected to adhere to.

The only question in my mind, was it all bullshit from the git go? Was it a movement that was designed this way, or was it hijacked and subverted at some point?

Someone was on by the name of Wendy Williams (looked more like a drag queen) and she was leading her mostly brain-dead audience of women in getting excited about the latest season of The Real Slutty Housewives of A Big City.

I told my husband that I felt my IQ drooping.

I'm to the point where I keep score when I'm out in public, 1 point for every dirty look I get.

It all started when I spent a couple days at Disneyland with a now Ex Girlfriend.. I was just having fun, talking, kind of playing with some other people kids as we stood in line to get in.

Parents were fine with my antics, but I got a REAL dirty look from some Old Bag standing next in line.

Heaven forbid! Someone is, shudder, having FUN!

Now I keep score.

Short answer: read Douglas Murray's "Madness of Crowds." Other short answer: No, it wasn't all bullshit.

Other, slightly longer short answer: It was the commies what did it. They came in, exploited all these movements, and eventually took over. So the race for power means not equality, but total domination. It's how they roll.

She responded, "I'm no lady" as she walked past. I just stood there waiting for her to realize what she'd said. But yeah, no.
So I stopped holding the door for anyone for a short while and I just do my thing. So, of course, within a week a woman who was expecting me to hold the door was shocked that I didn't, muttering, "How rude!" under her breath.

110 From Trump's SOTU -- "The unemployment rate for women reached the lowest level in almost 70 years - and last year, women filled 72 percent of all new jobs added."

this is a little disturbing. My vision sees families growing, with women home enjoying a rich life with their kids. Women are certainly capable of professional careers, but there is probably greater potential for participating in the richness of Life, by being a mother at home.

Most jobs are not all that enriching, and while much of parenting may be somewhat tedious and not all pure joy -- with connectivity, the basic chores can include more intellectual WiFi stimulus. And with unlimited resources online, the "art" of parenting can itself be an academic pursuit, not just toddler tedium.

That is just my vision of a retort to the left's 60 year war on the family, where their "progressive" woman's fulfillment had to be tied to some job, instead of the open possibilities of rich family life that could include arts, music, spiritual advances -- whatever.

Did you know, if you and a lady both decide to have a cigarette, the gent lights his first, thus taking away the noxious fumes of lighter or match. Really stupid thing I have learned.

154 It's a biological fact that women view situations based more on an emotional state than a logical state. The end result of both processes often overlap so in many instances it's not distinguishable. Unfortunately when applying an emotional outlook to a situation that requires a logical outlook it s far worse than vice versa.

That said the logical solution isn't always the best long term solution or even the immediate solution. I'm glad we have a system to look at things from both viewpoints.

Back when the Netherlands was still largely Calvinist (as recently as the 1950s), it was customary for men to precede women when walking up a flight of stairs, so that they wouldn't be thought to be trying to look up the woman's dress. Today we have voyeurs sneaking upskirt photos in busy public places that they then post on Pornhub, and boast about it. Not to mention the creeps that hide miniature cameras in women's bathrooms or changing rooms. A little more Calvinism in the public square wouldn't be a bad thing.

This is more about time than capability or how roles should be defined. If you were a full time mom instead of splitting between that and work, you'd have more time to learn and master the domestic life. Likewise if a husband didn't have to split roles either he has the time to be more ambitious, focus on his job and potentially move up the ranks, earning more and making more. The same would be the case if a husband was stay at home but still had to juggle between that and a job to make ends meet.

Nowadays, there are too many things a guy can get wrong, if he's not careful. They spend soooo much time making sure they're not raping the gal, so they almost have to have a signed document for each stage of the sexual encounter.

Holding doors and such, those things might be nice, but a young man trying to be a "gentleman" has more important things to remember. Having the wherewithal to stop in the middle of the sex act because she changes her mind, that's quite the challenge. So many rules.

Such as: "If the glove don't fit, you musta quit."

I shot up like a rocket
And to my surprise I found
That halfway up I met
The bloody barrel coming down

As for the whole door opening thing, I do my best to thank someone who holds a door open for me or a man who pauses so I can enter or exit an elevator. I'll also try to hold open doors whenever I can, and if it's for someone who needs more time and protests because I'm wasting mine waiting for them I'll generally joke that they're keeping me from doing laundry. Claire was once a "sensible" Democrat. Was a prosecutor for a while, ran for Gov (and was not nominated)... I don't think she ever held state office before she was elected Senator, but now I can't remember.

Her big "thing" was talking the plain talk stuff that Missouri voters will often eat up. And not having been elected Governor, she could go to Washington, and act in lockstep with her Party, then go back home and put on the plaintalk hat again. It worked. One time.

Hawley barely beat her this last time, but by then her act wasn't fooling enough voters.

My guess is, she's gunning for a Secretary job in the next Dem Administration. If by some chance they win it this year. I doubt she's Veep material.

as Indian American. They started Race to Dinner to challenge liberal

Spot on Christopher.
This is exactly right.
He treats everyone the same, with respect and dignity (until you demonstrate you don't deserve it). He doesn't condescend, none of the 'you're special cause you're black' BS. He treats people like people and brings an attitude of lets work together as Americans.

Your confusing issues. No one denies that there are physical differences between men and women. And for things like PT tests, there are differences which are based on reality and not fantasy. AND going forward, the PT test will be job specific rather than sex specific. Your trying to use that physical difference to slam women in the Military, and that is not fair. There are also age specific standards. Should all older Military personal be dismissed?

As I said since most females, and for that matter most military personal in general, are in a Staff support function. Their physical standards are just fine for that function.

In our industry where suit and ties are Monday through Thursday and Friday is casual business attire, the women especially under 40 do not understand the difference between casual and slovenly.

You need to bathe every morning and flip flops are not appropriate under any circumstances no matter whose logo is on them and how much you paid for them.

And if you are showing your toes get a fucking pedicure.

Yeah I don't get that at all. Women clearly understand that its distasteful and unpleasant for guys to pretend to be women. Why do they figure we'll want them to dress and act like men??

On that theme, I was talking about this with my mom the other day. She was asking why so many young men don't get married any more.

Well mom... there's no upside and an avalanche of downside.

DISCLAIMER: some women, perhaps many, are not like what I'm about to describe. Nearly ALL of these women are taken, and hence not available for men to marry.

Why should a man give up independence to be with a woman who thinks mostly of herself, will not give anything up to be married, demands the man change to match her every whim, refuses to offer him anything in particular to keep him around other than the alleged joy of her mere presence, and then attacks him in public and at any whim divorces him and ravages his bank account and life.

Where's the upside for men, here? Where's the benefit? Even the "free milk and a cow" argument is gone, with women giving it up to random strangers they meet on a phone app.

So going forward men and women in boot camp will be meeting the same standards and there is going to be an option for a man with the same physical abilities as a woman to go into a clerical field?

My point is not that women do not make a meaningful contribution to the military, they certainly do, however, if they are going to be held to a lower standard then there should be fewer reward.

Fun story:

I received a bassinet that I announced my intention to assemble forthwith. All tubes and screws and bolts and fabric, packed to maximum flatness.

Then, the nurse called from the hospital. We were snowbound yesterday and unable to attend our daughter, so Lady YD had lots of questions and the call went on for like 45 minutes, postponing my bassinet building plans.

Lo and behold, when we came out from the bedroom, the bassinet was built. Her little 9yo daughter doesn't have a lot of hand-strength, so I had to tighten everything, but there it was. I was pretty impressed. Gave her $5.

410 It's excellent snarky high school humor and all and I enjoy it like everyone else, but I don't really care that Vindman appears not very fit. It's not the problem.

The problem is the collapse of standards and unwritten rules such that an obscure staffer can not only cause problems for a president, for no good reason, but that he can help launch an actual effing *impeachment* (however ludicrous that was), via coordination with another obscure staffer in the IC, who files a "whistleblower" complaint that is unlawful (not an IC matter), which complaint is immediately and comically dismissed by DOJ/OLC for its obvious lack of merit (campaign finance law violation).

All the jibber-jabber over Purple Heart and REMF and pastry and (my favorite) foreign-born!!!! is immaterial and stupid and boring. But it's apparently almost all that's within the capacity of everyone's favorite commentators.

You are missing or ignoring my point.

The standards are different for men and women. Does it not make sense that there are men that would meet the woman's standard for boot camp, not the men's standard, and perform as admirably as your woman shipmates?

What happens if a woman in a clerical position for a combat unit gets pregnant when they are ordered into combat?

I am not sure why you want to make this a thing.

I sincerely believe that the women that work for you are as good as any man in the specific tasks you are having them do. However, it is not fair that men of equal physical ability are forbidden from having the same job and it is not fair that the women are given the same rewards as men that have the same ability to perform the tasks and meed a higher physical standard.

I agree that the military should be designed to do military things.

The issue of fairness is because some have decided to use the military for things other than military things.

They have decided that it is fair to bring in women who are weaker than men and give them the same opportunities as men.

If there were a two track system in the military say combat and support and you were in either or at the outset that wold be fair.

Support troops have a track that is not as dangerous and not as rewarding. Combat troops more danger more rewards.

Excluding men from jobs that women have because of physical differences is unfair.

To give a non-political explanation of the latter, there's a host on a well-known shopping channel who occasionally gets phone calls from avid viewers who will tell him they wish he'd marry the caller's daughter because he's such a nice guy. 443 I don't really give a crap about fair in the military. I care about effectiveness and capability. If you have a section of the military which is simply not up to the task of fighting, that's a problem because it is just not possible to be sure when or where you will need someone to fight.

The military is a fighting machine, a killing machine, to "kill people and break things" as Limbaugh puts it. Having some kind of two-tiered requirements which allow some to be less capable and physically able is not a positive development.

Nubs at their first ship will crank, guaranteed. As for food prep ashore... if the Navy pays to send someone to A school and then on to a shore command for a support role, I don't know that a food service obligation does anything that can't be done at the command. I'm sure there's no shortage of unpleasant and thankless work that an E-nothing PN or SK or HM can get stuck with, and it might even have something to do with their eventual rate.

495 One thing that Trump has working for him is that -

he was the first Republican President after Obama.

Obama had to be a YUGE disappointment for any Black Democrat with an IQ above their shoe size.

Here he was The First Black President Evah! But, not only that but he was a Superior Being. Almost a Spiritual God-Man walking among us. And the Smartest President Evah! to boot.

Remember all those videos on youtube with these poor Black Women especially going on and on and on about how Obama was going to buy them gas and food and housing. And all Black Americans were going to get their share of the pie cuz Obama! And their lives would be so much better!!!!!

Nope.

The reality was that Obama was even worse than the average Democrat administration for Black Americans because the MSM never held him accountable for anything.

The poor and middle class lost jobs. Their schools were worse. Their neighborhoods, schools, and jobs taken away from them.

In essence, they were promised the world and got less than nothing.

Sure, some of Obama's Black Cronies got rich, but as per usual most of the $10T went to rich white men and women.

What a fucking surprise. Color me shocked.

Trump was absolutely brilliant when he started saying "what do you have to lose?" to Black Americans.

Even the dullest had to realize that they had been played for fools all of their lives. They'd been lied to all of their lives.

And now, lookee here, that horrible Trump who was gonna put them back in chains, who was Hitler Squared, who was the worst racist evah, was leading the way for greater opportunity and employment for Black Americans than Ever Before.

The situations not unlike when the Emperor of Japan was revealed, not to be a god but a squirt, a little guy with a high voice.

That may be the difference between Black Men and Women and voting for Trump.

Black women still can't believe that the weaselly little runt Obama isn't/wasn't Their Strong Black Man Who Was Going to Save them and Provide For Them. Cuz that was their dream.

Black Men on the other hand, who are now working, can be strong Black Men providing for their families. That clicks a lot of buttons in men.

And they can now see clearly.
