Gun Thread: Super Bowl Edition [Weasel]

Well it's that time of the year again, that special day when we break out the chips and cheese dip, order pizza, drink beer, watch social justice commercials, and throw up in the neighbor's living room. It's Super Bowl Sunday!! Yay!

Truth be told, I don't give a shit about the Super Bowl, and haven't watched a football game in years. For me, at some point it stopped being about the game and guys working together as a team, and started to be about a bunch of overpaid, preening thugs showing off for the camera. Then they started the kneeling during the National Anthem bullshit, and that just cemented the decision I'd already made. One more reason is that I live in Northern Virginia and guess my team is supposed to be the Redskins, which is reason enough to be bitter and angry. The only possibly redeeming factor in the entire mess that is the NFL are the cheerleaders, and I think they get left at home for the big game. Having said that, I am not so set in my convictions that I didn't buy a couple of squares in the office football pool... go Chiefs!

So that is the official WeaselPosition on football, but feel free to discuss the game if you like! Now let's get to the guns and shooting, shall we?

I've been thinking about getting a scoped .22 for plinking down at the farm, and recently found this little dusty and unloved gem.

It's a Colt Colteer 1-22, around 25,000 of which were made between the late 1950s and early 1960s. It's now the only gun I have which doesn't have a serial number, required by the Gun Control Act of 1968. The scope is a Weaver B4 made in El Paso, Texas around the same time. It's a great little single-shot rifle and one whole hell of a lot of fun to shoot! I went to the farm this week with my shooting buddy and between the two of us had fair number of weapons to choose from. Guess which one we ended up shooting the most? Go ahead, guess! Yep - it was the little .22 plinker. We set up a few steel plates at 100 yards and had a great old time just plinking away!

A .22 rifle isn't going to win you the Badass of the Day award at the range, but for the simple joy of shooting they're hard to beat and can often be found for as little as $200. When was the last time you spent an afternoon shooting cans on a fence at 4 cents per round? If you ever have a chance to get one, grab it!

Here's a neat little sub gun - the gas operated closed bolt design 9mm Sig Sauer MPX K.

If you are behind on your gun buying take a look at this. The observant among you will notice the barrel appears to be pretty short, and you're correct. It's 4.5 inches long, which is somewhat less than the minimum 16 inches to be classified as a rifle. What gives? Well, it's actually a pistol with a helpful supporting brace attachment, that's what gives. The one pictured above has an upgraded aftermarket brace and an Aimpoint Micro T2 red dot optic, bringing the price well above the $2,200 retail price for the gun alone. It's fun to shoot and features the usual solid Sig Sauer quality. The model was introduced in 2015 and is Sig's answer to the H&K MP5.

At some point along the line, I realized I had enough spare parts lying around the house to make a whole rifle.

This started out as a Savage 10 and is now sporting an aftermarket .308 barrel, Nightforce scope and Harris bipod as well as a few other parts. I think my idea at the time was to make a T/R Class rifle for club level matches, but that never really materialized. Today, I use it simply for recreational shooting and it is pretty damn accurate and definitely fun to shoot. With regular ol' commercial ammo it's probably around a 1 MOA-ish gun, and if I worked up a target load for it I could improve on that quite a bit. I like it just the way it is, however, just shooting it for funsies.

Last week I mentioned taking my own great advice by ordering two cans of 7.62x51mm M2 Ball ammo from SG Ammo. It's surplus from the 1980's made by PMC, and at less than 50 cents per round it's hard to go wrong. The idea for this week was to take the chronograph to the farm and test the 40 year old surplus ammo against modern production ammo and report the results here. I even remembered to bring the chrono, but couldn't get it to register the shots and ran out of time. I think there were two problems - I set up the chrono on a wobbly table, and also pretty much forgot the sequence for arming the chrono for the shot. I still want to do the test and will read the manual and devise a better setup next time I head down for the weekend. I can say the 30 or so rounds I did shoot appeared to be very consistent at 100 yards but I want to see what the velocities look like. Stay tuned!

8 Today I once again experienced the sublime pleasure of owning a revolver.

A friend called yesterday and suggested that the weather was going to be good enough for a spell of outdoor shooting. I agreed.

Happily, the weather was nice enough for a brief shooting practice. However, one of the limitations of this particular range arrangement is the necessity of spreading a ground cloth to collect ejected brass.

Which revolvers don't have to worry about. You can wander all over the lawn and not worry about dropping a single casing by accident.

As my friend grappled with the now-muddy cloth in a rising wind, I think the point was made.

Plus revolvers are fun to shoot.

31 So I made it to the outdoor range this weekend. It was a lovely 36 degrees but no wind.
Went to the handgun range first and shot at the metal targets they have set up at 25 yards while waiting for the range to go cold so my nephew and I could put up our target stands.
I would say I hit the metal targets about 30% of the time. It could have been more but I was not keeping track.When the range did go cold I set my target at around 7-8 yards and put 40 rounds downrange. I was VERY pleased with the results.
Then off to the 100 yard range with my nephews .308 and shooting at the metal targets at 100 yards. It appears my nephews rifle came out of zero because he was not hitting the targets and had to try and re-zero there.We went to the 300 yard range but stopped shooting after maybe 20 rounds because the rifle was not zeroed and we were barely hitting the target.

41 Picked up a couple of boxes of Winchester commemorative M19 Brass 12 ga. buckshot to go on display with the Norinco M97 trench gun and 17 inch Enfield bayonet. I haven't seen an original brass GI 12 gauge shell since the sixties, I guess. Maybe when the lottery ticket hits I'll be able to replace the ChiCom knockoff with a real Model 97. It shoots pretty good, though.

57 I don't give a hoot in hell about the Super Bowl. I watched the first fifty of them. Weasel's description of how the NFL generally and the Redskins specifically suck is dead on. The ads used to be entertaining. Now they are just and combination of stupid and insulting. My only regret is that we stopped watching football before Craperdick further fouled the nest so we couldn't boycott becasue of him and his BS copy cats.

Patrick Mahomes is an even better baseball player than he is a football player. In High School, he was the best pitcher and the leading home run hitter. (he was our local hero) The box score the next day would be Whitehouse 2, whoever nothing, and the box score would "Mahomes pitched a shutout, and hit a home run with one RBI". Games with him were mostly 17 guys standing around for 3 hours watching Mahomes play.

One of the reasons I've decided to reduce my collection (or: "save them from a watery grave") is to provide funds for upgrading the remaining items (which, alas, are fated to be drowned).

The Mauser C96 Broomhandle is one of only two pistols that can get a stock without requiring a tax stamp (the Inglis Hi-Power clone being the other).

That's the next step for my C96, along with a replacement follower spring and new grips. Then I'll have the whole thing re-blued so that the random parts have some sort of commonality.

I had a bad LE145 that they took back and replaced on their dime. No trouble since, but I haven't fired it much since I replaced it.

The failure mode one where it wouldn't fully catch the hammer on the way back, letting it ride down on the trigger reset. It wouldn't double, but the hammer wouldn't be back for the second shot so it turned it into a straight-pull bolt action that worked every other shot.

181 I recently built the cheapest AR15 pistol ever. It helped that a guy gave me a complete 11.5 inch upper in 5.56.

I got the cheapest PSA pistol lower there is - the "Stealth" which differs from the "Classic" in that it doesn't have a Palmetto State Armory logo stamped or engraved or however they do it on the mag well. That saves you $10.

Comes with a Shockwave Blade stabilizer that, yeah I guess it stabilizes. But it is whole lot like a stock. And it is adjustable with an allen wrench. (They make adjustable adustable stabilizers.)

So, let's just say that all gun laws are unconstitutional - 2A bona fides established.

But the gun laws that exist say that short barrel rifles are a thing, and these rifle based pistols are, well, they seem to really be taking advantage of a loophole. The difference between a stabilizer and a stock is minimal. Okay, ATF says they are okay, they are okay. It just seems kinda arbitrary. This is okay, other things are not.

204 Let me mash up food and SB threads - I saw this crockpot wings recipe on FB and saved it. I made the wings, but they were a little too frozen when I put them in so there was too much water in there and it made the sauce soupy. Gah.

There was an optional step to take the sauce out of the crockpot and boil it with some corn starch and then put the wings in the broiler with that sauce on it.

Wasn't able to thicken the sauce too much but the broiling rescued the wings! Christmas is saved!

Yeah, so I barely got through high school chemistry, but I know that when they find interesting items in shipwrecks, they have to go through a whole sequence of 'baths' to prevent the item from disintegrating upon exposure to air.

Cannon are one of the items that have to be 'stabilized' and I suspect it's some sort of reaction noted above. Michigan has a lot of shipwreck museums and though everything is in fresh water, there's still a need to some treatment so that it doesn't instantly crumble into rust upon exposure to air.

Should be possible to duplicate the effect. Go to known wrecks of various ages, recover a cannon or two, plant instruments, and see what happens. Also try with cast iron from other uses.

ABSOLUTELY NOT! Every BP weapon comes with that warning. The steel used in these guns are not designed for modern powder. Black powder and subs don't work like modern powders. It is easy to find reports and photos of BP guns that were loaded with smokeless that blew up.

Yes.

The benefit would be aftermarket parts and accessories support, plus 10/22 is just a bog standard .22 semi-auto rifle and has been around forever. Caveat - I haven't fired the takedown model specifically, so look for keep an eye out for reviews of that one in particular.

Surprisingly, it has to be lubed. I was expecting that you should be able to take it out of some burning wreckage and float down a river and it would fire. But no, you want to take the sideplate off and put some oil in there.

It's very light. The ergonomics aren't great, and the trigger is pretty heavy for a .22. It doesn't have a feed ramp, so use sturdy round nose ammo - CCI mini mag hollows get crimped trying to feed.

It does well enough, but I'd probably compare it with a 10/22 takedown at a store. If that feels like a real .22 rifle, I'd lean towards that unless I absolutely needed to stow it as a single kit that fits in its floating stock with a spare magazine.

515 I've shot the Ruger 10/22 a lot, thousands of rounds. Never handled the Henry R-7. The survival rifles like the R-7 made by another company were not the most reliable or accurate, although they were decent. The reviews I'm seeing on the Henry indicate their version is much more accurate while keeping the small size and low weight.

I should check them out the next time I'm at cabelas.

I think Charter made the one that wasn't well-received. The Henry is OK, and accurate enough, but I'm not sure what you gain over a 10/22 besides gimmick. It really is a lousy trigger, and it's kind of awkward attached to the receiver that's just wedged into the stock and screwed on.

The aperture sight is neat, but it's literally a tiny plate held in place with a single screw. That's how you adjust the sights, unscrew the little screw from the rear sight, nudge the plate around until it looks OK, and then tighten it down, somehow, without disturbing the sight plate.

If I had to pick one to stick in a trunk or a saddlebag or a backpack, I'd probably get the AR-7 again. If I had any designs on using it as a rifle on the odd range trip as well, I'd look at something else like the 10/22 takedown.

Another option is an over-under like a break action .22/.410. Someone's got to make something like that.

Well don't let me talk you out of it if your heart's set on it, but the plinking part might get old is all. It feels like a shop class zip gun.

I can't imagine it has anything that could corrode on it, that's one point in its favor. The barrel is a piece of nylon bar stock with a .22 caliber rifled sleeve and a coating of plastic or teflon or something on the outside. The guts in the receiver are all sturdy and should hold up to use or disuse as the case may be (though they do need to be oiled). Serious about the ammo though, I could never get it to feed soft lead or hollowpoints without deforming them. You'll want to use some kind of jacketed (or gilded, whatever you call it for .22) round nose ammo.

For many years Dad had a 22lr over 20 for a barn gun.

I'd think unless the corrosion got so bad the hammer spring broke it just 'works'.

And I'd go for the 20 gauge combo first... 12 gauge being overkill.

I've never shot one.
Back in the 60's & 70's, there were different caliber and shotgun combinations. .222/20 ga, .223/20 ga, .22WMR/20, ect. They were popular for turkey hunting. The thought process was the rifle caliber for a headshot, the shotgun if there was no headshot available.

Palmetto State Armory has been recommended here.

They are the least expensive bar none. You can get a complete lower for $130 with an adjustable carbine stock. That is their "Classic" which is essentially just a milspec piece.

They sell an upgraded lower EPT which is Enhanced Polished Trigger for like $40 more.

As far as lowers go, I can't imagine what would make one a "bad" lower in an of itself. You can plus them up with triggers and different buffer springs but the actual lower receiver, I can't imagine how they could actually be all that bad aside from poor finishing.

834 Another vote for the 10/22 take down over the Henry, unless portability is an absolute priority. I've shot 'em both. Put a Volquartsen target sear into the 10/22, and add Tech-sights and a good sling, and it'll get meat for the campfire in a survival situation as well as being a good range gun. I wouldn't want to have to plink squirrels or rabbits with the Henry when I was hungry, just sayin'. No experience with the .22/.410 combo, that could be a winner as well.
As far as the OP, YES, range time occurred due to a nice, dry, 50ish day on Friday. I was testing .308 loads in my M1A as I'm adding a RL15 recipe to my usual 4895s. It turned out to like 43 grains behind my usual 168 grain fake SMKs.
Also, both I and famous-on-the-garden-thread Pat* got in some offhand shooting with my old Kel-tec SU16 carbine - a relic of our time in California, but still a fun .223 plinker. Since yours truly forgot to bring the Appleseed targets we intended to shoot, we improvised by hanging one of those big tombstone pistol targets meant for 21 feet out at 25 yards, and trying to hold it in the X ring - which was mostly done.
No Stupor Bowl here, we'll watch the interesting ads on You-tube later.
