Beginner Problem - White To Play (498 )

Goal: White can force a mate in 3 moves

Problem Solutions

Beginner Problem - White To Play

20200201 - Problem 1.jpg
3r1rk1/qp3ppp/4b3/4pN2/6P1/2P2P2/1PQP2K1/5R2 w - - 0 1

As many of you discovered, it's a forced mate in 3:

1.Ne7+ Kh8
2.Qxh7+ Kxh7
3.Rh1#

Intermediate Problem - Black To Play

20200201 - Problem 2.jpg
5rk1/3q1ppp/5r2/pp1pQ3/P2P4/2P2bP1/1P3P1P/R3RNK1 b - - 0 1

Mate in 5:

1...Qh3
2.Ne3 Qxh2+
3.Kxh2 Rh6+
4.Qh5

This accomplishes nothing but delay the impending mate by 1 move.

4...Rxh5+
5.Kg1 Rh1#

Advanced Problem - White To Play

20200201 - Problem 3.jpg
8/ppk1p3/2p3Rp/P3p1bP/2B1P3/1P3P2/2Pr1P2/5K2 w - - 0 1

So the general method here is to see that White can get a passed h pawn,

1.Rxg5!

Black should not recapture. Because 1...hxg5 2.Bd3 Rd1+ 3.Kg2 and Black is paralyzed. His rook is blocked in and he won't be able to get his King over to the h-file to stop the pawn from queening.

So, Black is now a piece down. What are his options?

He can try to undermine White's position with 1...Rxc2, but after White secures the passer by 2.Rg6 Rd2 3.Rxh6, Black is pretty much finished: 3...Rd8 4.Re6 Kd7 5.Rxe5 Rh8 6.b4 Rh7 7.Kg2 and wins.

The other option is

1...Rd6

My app found this move, so I decided to see how it could be played

2.Rg6 Rf6
3.Kg2 Kd7
4.Kg3

Here I come... step by step...

4...Rd6

And now I can simplify:

5.Rxd6+ exd6
6.Kg4 d5
7.exd5 cxd5
8.Bxd5 Kd6

I figure I've got a won game at this point, but I played it out for a few moves longer, just to make sure:

9.Bc4 Kc5
10.c3 Kc6
11.Kf5 Kd6
12.Kg6 Ke7
13.Kxh6 Kf6

Black wants to trap my king on the h-file so it blocks the pawn, but I can generate threats on the other side of the board.

14.Bd3 b5
15.axb6 axb6
16.c4 e4
17.fxe4 Ke5

And there it is! The White king is now to move off the h-file

18.Kg5 Kd4
19.h6 b5
20.cxb5 and wins.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

I think Melania may have some of that Mongol blood, too. If you look at her eyes (admittedly hard to do in this photo), I swear there's an Asiatic hint to them, as if Genghis Khan passed through her g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-randma's village back in the day and stopped at her hut for some refreshment.

Posted by: DB- just DB at February 01, 2020 05:38 PM (iTXRQ)

62 Leaving for Saudi Arabia in 2017, Melania left the White House in a creamy Max Mara sweater and a formfitting Herve Pierre leather skirt. The micro-ribbed knit top was complete with bow cuffs, its light color contrasting against the burnt orange pencil skirt. Herve Pierre's design included a high waist and meticulous exposed stitching, hugging the mom's sleek body.

The accessories adorning the clothes were more standard-Melania: a colossal diamond ring and nude Manolo Blahnik stilettos. When pictures surfaced, the ensemble initially made waves, as it was undoubtedly the most avant-garde Melania has worn yet as the President's wife.

102 As requested:

Slow Cooker Honey Buffalo Wings

Ingredients

SPICE RUB:
" 2 Tbsp brown sugar
" 1 1/2 tsp kosher salt
" 1 tsp black pepper
" 1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
" 1 1/2 tsp onion powder or dried minced onion
" 1 tsp smoked paprika
" 1 tsp chili powder
" 1 tsp ground cumin
" 1 tsp dried parsley
HONEY BUFFALO SAUCE:
" 3/4 cup hot sauce (Frank's Original is what I always use)
" 1/2 cup honey
" 1 Tbsp melted butter
" 1 Tbsp molasses (optional but recommended)

WINGS:
" 4 lbs fresh chicken wings, patted dry

Instructions
1. In a small mixing bowl, add rub ingredients and stir to combine thoroughly. Spray slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray and add chicken wings. Sprinkle rub over the top and use hands to massage the rub into all the chicken wings. I like to use nitrile gloves for this - easy clean up!
2. In the empty rub mixing bowl, add sauce ingredients and whisk to combine well. Pour over spiced wings and toss gently to coat.
3. Cover slow cooker and cook on HIGH for 2 hours, or on LOW for 3-4 hours.

FOR STICKY GLAZE:
1. Cook slow cooker recipe as directed above. Line a baking sheet with 2 sheets of aluminum foil, then place an oven safe wire cooling rack on top. Place cooked wings on cooling rack, then pour sauce from the slow cooker into a saucepan. Add 2 Tbsp cornstarch and 2 Tbsp of water to a small bowl and whisk to combine well, then pour into sauce and whisk. Cook over MED-HIGH heat until boiling, then reduce heat to MED-LOW and whisk as it cooks. Cook about 5 minutes, or until thickened to desired consistency.
2. Brush wings with thickened sauce, then broil on HIGH for 2-3 minutes, until the sauce caramelizes a little. Brush with more glaze and broil another 2 minutes. Repeat this one more time and you should have perfectly sticky wings!

Notes
Frozen wings can also be used, but the sauce in the slow cooker after cooking will be more watery, as most frozen chicken wings are ice glazed (each wing has a thin glaze of ice over it, so they don't stick together as much in the bag). For best results, thaw frozen wings before cooking.

If cooking from frozen, cook time is 3 hours on HIGH and 4-6 hours on LOW.

NOTE: We don't have a slow cooker, so we're just loading the wings into a dutch over and cook them on low for a couple of hours.

106 The Mongols made it to Central Europe, but only on one campaign, IIRC, and they didn't stay long. OTOH, the Sarmations, Huns, Avars, Magyars, and several other Central Asian nomad peoples not only made it to Europe but hung around and were absorbed into the local populations (in the case of the Magyars, they became the local population but were also notorious woman-stealers, so the genetic pool became very European quickly).

Instead of killing the other guy's pieces, use your pieces to deny your opponent areas of the board to limit his options. When he runs out of room, mistakes will have to be made.

162 I wouldn't worry too much about the hospital lien. The girl had nothing to do with it; it's an automatic mailout (in some places) by whoever provided her care.

"A hospital lien is a special right granted to hospitals and emergency services providers by Statute enabling them to receive payment from the first monies recovered from a negligent third-party by the injured victim. The phrase"hospital lien" is actually short for "hospital and emergency services lien." It is a right that attaches automatically and is often accompanied by written notice of a hospital lien although this is not required. The lien applies only in emergency situations and to reasonable and necessary medical care provided as a result of the emergency for a set time period."

They must have. Das Alte Atlilied (the old song of Attilla) is the oldest piece of writing in what's called German. It's their Beowulf, and it's from around the same time. Atli is also central to the Niebelungen story.

And, an Austrian colonel notwithstanding, a bunch of Germans have Mongol eyes. I'm talking from the 70s, real Germans, not the recent arrivals.

205 off tevye sock! lol!

a note to any who wondered if the Mitch McConnell was messing with Trump by not scheduling the final vote on Wednesday, after the SOTU - but it was reported today that Mitch called up Trump and got his approval before agreeing to the final schedule.

it's really pretty simple: first, every Senator wanted off this weekend after 2 weeks of sitting through this mess, and we can't fault Mitch for doing what 100 Senators wanted him to do. Then, on Monday, Dems get 3 hours of closing arguments, Trump's team gets the final 3 hours of closing arguments. After that, every Senator who wants to make a 10 minute statement (ie, cut a campaign ad for November) gets to, and that'll take a day and a half. (Democrats get 470 minutes, potentially, but the GOP Senators get up to 530 minutes) That kills Monday and Tuesday, and after that, on Wednesday, the final vote.

There's very little chance of anything surprising happening, it's all just going to be Senators standing up and talking at each other for 2 full days.

224 #200, that may be so, but it's not a clear-cut win for white in this King-and-Pawn endgame, with all various pawns sprawled around, none of which are passed. Whereas 2. Bd3 after 1. Rxg5 hxg5 leads to a rapid queen promotion of white's h-pawn, meaning that black is better off conceding his bishop, which is clearly a losing position, just more slowly.

225 Late today. Solved puzzles so.

Easy. This a standard mating pattern; N+R after Q sack.

1. Ne7+ Kh8 2. Qxh7+ Kxh7 3. Rh1#

Intermediate.

1. ... Qh3 2. Ne3 Qxh2+

A. 3. Kf1 Qh1#
B. 3. Kxh2 Rh6+ 4. Qh5 Rxh5+ 5. Kg1 Rh1#

Advanced.

1. Rxg5 hxg5 2. Bd3 Rd1+ 3. Kg2 and white will queen the h-pawn.

Otherwise the B taken on move 1 is free.

pick the one you want. The system cleverly eliminates the need for
refrigeration, which they happen not to have.

When my dad was a kid, he said he'd go with my grandma and buy chickens live in Chicago. Their ice box had a big chunk of ice in it. Not a lot of room for everything like we do now. Buy it, kill it, cook it. I think they ate better then.

Posted by: rhomboid at February 01, 2020 06:44 PM (El6T/)

What you say is correct, of course, but I don't believe Alexander's position is "absurd", even if I disagree. The real problem is that this kind of proceeding is both political and legal, and everyone keeps jumping back and forth between the two.

Alexander is answering the Democrats who's said "This should be a Real Trial! With Witnesses!!" With a purely Legal argument, not a political one. In any criminal trial, when the prosecution has failed to prove an actual crime, then the Court MUST dismiss (or the jury acquit) no matter what. The idea is that, EVEN IF everything the Prosecution says is true, the Jury must still acquit. Because the Prosecution screwed up their own case.

I'd say that runs with the idiocy that has one repeating "fair trial" without recalling to mind that a "fair trial" is what we promise the accused.

But two of the elements of a "fair trial" are
1. Presumption of innocence
2. Right to face your accusor (Ciarmella)

Of the first, the main thing they charged the President with was not an out-and-out crime, but "corrupt motive" (Orangemanbad). They never *proved* corrupt motive, the just demanded that you cohere to their narrative which "explained" a corrupt motive.

But there central charge runs 180-degrees counter to a presumption of innocence.

Yes to the mattress liner, or a good quality waterproof mattress pad.

Switch to the big 'overnight' bag at bedtime. Hang it below the level of your bladder, so you won't get that back-pressure.

The 'leg bag' is generally too small for overnight anyway: only 300ml, iirc. 'Overnight' bags are generally 2 liters capacity, so you don't need to wake up and drain.

How do I know these things? Dad had prostate cancer and lived for many months with fulltime catheter inserted.

If there has been one annoyance that preceded most other about liberals/progressives/upheavalists, it was mind-reading.

Their favorite straw man argument is that they can read your mind and tell *you* want you really think.

Mind-reading is a central claim in most Democrat arguments. It's why Nadler knew that the Senate was equally on trial--not knowing something about the theory that founded the country, just knowing the evil that dwells in the heart of Republicans.

There are so many times during the House proceedings that I turned to my wife and said a
majority of the last diatribe was condemning other people for having any other opinion.

A rise of the Democrats is a rise of the 21st-century re-birth of Jacobins.

[iAlexander is basing his argument on a principle of English Common Law that has been around for several hundredyears. If the Prosecution fails to prove a crime, there is no need for a defense.

"It
was inappropriate
for the president to ask a foreign leader to
investigate his political opponent and to withhold United States aid to
encourage that investigation. When elected officials inappropriately
interfere with such investigations, it undermines the principle of equal
justice under the law. But the Constitution does not give the Senate
the power to remove the president from office and ban him from this
year's ballot simply for actions that are inappropriate."
-Don't give me "reasonably disagree".

I would rather they read the Federalist Papers--and the Antifederalist writers like Federal Farmer and Brutus.

The isolated *words* of the Constitution have been too abused. But when you see the principle applied in a conversation, as in the FP, you get a sense of how those words are to be taken.

You won't probably be 100% correct, but at least you'll have a rationale more than "because I want that".

Keep in mind that the progressives reject "originalims" for such studied academics as judges. One of the criticisms of "originalism" is that it is impossible to "read the mind" of someone 200 years ago.

Yet, when they need to they can stand before the Senate and channel the founders (however not in a way that convinces many who have actually read much of the founders).

Now, they tell us they can read the minds of posterity--when we only have 10 years to live, though, and the emanations they are getting from the future are the the Republicans will be scorned.

I would hope that we can develop a pattern of busting out in uproarious laughter when we get somebody mind-reading future generations.

390 Alexander is wrong about the facts - that was his absurd statement.

His statement about the alleged action being inappropriate was particularly stupid, as he even unwittingly included the, well - absurd - premise that is normally left implicit and which of course renders the whole position untenable.

"to investigate his political opponent"

WTF? "Political opponent" is not a meaningful concept or formal status under US law. And granting this imaginary protected class de facto immunity from investigation would be, obviously, outrageous, the essence of politicized law enforcement.

Alexander and the rest of the sub-mediocrities vomiting up this lazy, stupid line have had many chances to say more intelligent things, that take into context actually important things: the actual factual context in which an investigation occurs - whether it is well-founded or "out of the blue", and the need, as in all cases, for care and due diligence in launching them.

But they haven't.

O-care and "amnesty" lawlessness. Two huge things that it is easy to see remaining completely untouched. Because Trump understands a "pen and a phone" are not the proper approach to many issues. And the voters mostly still don't care to enforce their will on those they elect.

Restoring even a bit of constitutional balance with the judiciary (beyond trying to temper the judicial rampage by changing personnel) - doubt we'll see any of that.
