Republicans Float Idea of Voting on Entire Package of Witnesses, Including Bolton as Well as Witnesses Republicans Want to Hear From;
Joe Manchin Says That Hunter Biden is a Relevant Witness
The "package" is intended as a poison pill -- Romney and Collins (who I'm told are absolutely determined to vote with the Democrats on any matter) will vote for it, but many Democrats will actually vote against it.
One plan is to amend any resolution calling for a particular witness to also include a package of witnesses that assuredly wouldn't win enough support in the Senate. For example, if the Democrats seek to call former National Security Advisor John Bolton, Republicans might subpoena Hunter Biden over his lucrative board position in Ukraine, and Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., over his inconsistent statements concerning his panel's contacts with the whistleblower at the center of the impeachment probe. "After listening to the Dems’ 20+ hours of argument and the rebuttal arguments from @realDonaldTrump, I’ve got lots of questions for the Dems," tweeted Missouri GOP Sen. Josh Hawley on Tuesday. "Like this one: Why did Schiff lie about his contact with the 'whistleblower'? More to come!" The "package deal" proposal could afford moderate Republicans the political cover of supporting more witnesses in theory, while ultimately rejecting a witness package they deem flawed. Even if a witness package passed, the resolution could be written such that the witness phase of the trial ends immediately if a key witness, such as Hunter Biden, defies his subpoena.But Joe Manchin says he does want to call Hunter Biden as a witness anyway.
Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey -- who had been considered a wavering potential defector -- now says that he sees no need for any witnesses. But, if there are witnesses, he thinks Trump and Republicans should get to call the witnesses they want to hear from, too.
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.) told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that he believes Hunter Biden is a relevant witness in President Trump's Senate impeachment trial, adding that it could be an opportunity for Biden to clear himself. ... "Morning Joe": Is Hunter Biden a relevant witness, senator? Manchin: "You know, I think so. I really do. I don't have a problem there, because this is why we are where we are. Now, I think that he could clear himself. Of what I know and what I've heard, but being afraid to put anybody that might have pertinent information is wrong -- no matter if you're a Democrat or Republican, and not go home and say well, I protected one [from having to testify]. No. If it's relevant, then it should be there."

Pat Toomey on Wednesday sent the strongest signal yet that he will not support calling witnesses in President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, saying he is “very, very skeptical” any witness could change how he would ultimately vote on Trump’s political fate. “As I’ve said from the beginning, my decision about a witness is going to be whether or not there is a fact in dispute that a witness can shed enough light on that it could resolve the dispute, and do so in a way that would change my mind about how I ought to vote on the final question," Toomey said. "And I'm very, very skeptical... that that criteria is going to be met." ... Do the undefined charges of Obstruction of Congress, or Abuse of Power, meet the Constitutional threshold of Treason, Briber, or High Crime or Misdemeanor.
If not, then as these do not meet the clear requirement of the Constitution, the charges are dismissed.

However, this flips because it is also simpler to say you want to hear from any relevant witnesses, rather than saying no, only the Democrats get to call witnesses because we really want to hear what they say, but then it suddenly isn't that important to hear more information from the defense witnesses. Not enough people will be willing to make that case for their vote. Romney, sure. But not many others. Even Collins.
Democrats DO NOT want Schiff or Biden to be called as a witness. They will make up some other excuse, but there will be enough of them voting against witnesses to kill this thing if it goes forward that way.

Its like trying someone for theft then turning it into a fraud case. In court, that would cause the judge to throw that out or direct the counsel to focus on the actual case at hand, not add it to the charges for the jury to decide.

That might be how you feel but that clearly has not been the majority opinion around here that any and all witnesses are bad.
And there is zero guarantee that even Bolton would be a bad witness. As Tami has noted he was publicly singing the praises of Trump's call with Zelensky a month after the call.
The only thing we know about what Bolton would say comes from a lead to Maggie Haberman, part of Team Resistance for the last 3+ years and much of that leak has already been refuted by the people quoted in the leak including Mulvaney and Barr.

The Feds, through THEIR Court (chosen and paid for by the Fed Gov) have decided they are the only arbitrator of what the Constitution means.

The issue is that bringing out witnesses means that the Democrats control the process and narrative more strongly. The people NOT ACTUALLY IN THE SENATE and in a minority IN the Senate would be dictating how the trial goes.
And further, as I keep stating, the inclusion of witnesses would turn this into a trial about stuff that is not in the impeachment. They have two charges this is supposed to be about: Obstruction of Congress and Abuse of Power.
Bringing Witnesses in would turn this into a crapshow about Russia and Ukraine quid pro quo and a host of other stuff they couldn't prove or establish in the House and should not be.

Even that is extremely rare in the history of the church. Outside of Prop 8, and being anti-slavery, and petitioning the gov't for redress when they were being killed and pushed out of their homes, I can't think of any politicking they've done.

You're counting them as on our side, without facts in evidence. I theorize that years ago the progressives decided that they needed their party, but they also had to farm the conservative vote so that they could keep government going in the direction they want. So they basically hire or recruit someone to be that pained conservative, who has to vote his or her conscience and side with the Dems.
This would explain the decades-persistent phenomena of a Republican party without a spine.

I've come to believe that the Mormon faith fits into the branch known as Non-Trinitarian Christianity, which was quite prevalent in the early church. The Nicene Creed was written in order to try and stamp that out, and establish what thereafter would be known as Orthodox Christianity.
One of the reasons the Vandals were so despised out of all of the Barbarian groups is that even though they were Christians, they were Arian (non-Trinitarian) Christians, and when they took over a region they would replace the Orthodox Bishops with their own. The Orthodox Church in both Byzantium and Rome had a special hatred of them for this, and it shows in the way they are remembered.

- What is Trump going to do with the Ukrainians finding nothing on Hunter? (We have to *presume* bad things.)
- If Zelensky is corrupt, how is Trump wrong in vetting Ukraine when billions have just "disappeared" in this country, if Zelensky is not corrupt, why is he going to hear "investigation" and return "dirt"?
- If the investigation turned up negative information on H. Biden, how is that *information* "interference". The founders wanted an "informed public". If we can consider backing the removal of a president without a crime--even to the point of demanding that executive privilege is "obstruction", then we submit that knowing things that we couldn't normally know plays a vital role in selecting the right officers. How can we then say that negative information, if it comes from a foreign country, on the fitness of a president is "interference"--why weren't the American people entitled to make their decision on which party to back for president based on internal corruption of the party as revealed in the email?
And those are the disconnects that exist right at the verge of bringing in Joe.

Only confirming what many of us said within minutes of the "revelation": Bolton should have immediately issued a short statement clarifying - i.e. denying - the substance of the "bombshell".
I know everyone else is much smarter and even clairvoyant etc and has it all figured out but I still don't understand Bolton's behavior here.

I'd say things have actually gone pretty crappy for it. Impeachment hasn't gotten much public attention, the defense has shredded the case, they've gone to demanding witnesses they should have, could have, called earlier. All teh cheerleading and spin won't be changing that.

Councils should not generally be regarded as adding to doctrine but formally defining them. Typically they reference the works of predecessors and are not proposing a new theory so much as combatting a new theory. Subordinationism would contradict the prophesy of Christ in Isaiah for instance.

Jack, last night on XM Breitbart was interviewing Joel Pollock regarding his article about why Bolton is doing what he is doing. Summary was follow the money.
The Dems in the House threatened to subpoena Bolton, in response Trump said he would invoke exec. privilege. So instead, they subpeoned Boltons chief of staff. The Chief of staff went to the courts to find out what he can and cannot say in response to a subpoena. Judge was read to hear and rule on his case, then the Dems withdrew the subpoena, making the case moot. Judge reluctantly dismissed the case without hearing or ruling because you can't just go to court to ask a question without their being some kind of peril for you. The DAY the Dem's withdrew their subpoena was the day Bolton submitted his transcript of his book to the NSC for security clearance review, knowing it was going directly to Lt. Bearclaw's brother . Leak then goes to NYT's who dutifully put out story stating Bolton's manuscript says Trump demanded Ukraine dig up dirt on Biden's in exchange for money Pollack believes it is because Bolton is being paid huge sums of money from DNC and others to write up crap that can't be proven one way or another. To help extend the impeachment, stopping confirmations and any other bills and also investigations by various committees. Plus Bolton gets his revenge on Trump for having publicly fired him.

That's the great Religious fight of the 4th Century all over again. The Nicene Creed defines Orthodox Christianity (ignore the way that the Eastern Greek Church has now taken over that name) The question then and now is - can one be Christian without being Orthodox Christian?
This fight also may have contributed to the rise of Islam. North Africa and the near east were centers of non-Orthodox Christianity in late Roman times, and they felt that they were oppressed greatly by the Byzantine Church, who were orthodox but who were also directly controlled by the Byzantine Emperor. 7th Century records are very fragmentary, but it's very possible that what really happened was that after a long and costly war between the Byzantines and the Persians, the non-Trinitarian Christian regions erupted in a revolt against the Orthodox Church which the Empire was no longer strong enough to stop, leading to a general collapse of authority in North Africa and the near east. and THEN Mohammed and his armies sailed into the middle of all of this chaos and stamped their mark on it.
That's if there was actually any real "Mohammed" at all, and he wasn't just an 8th century invention of the new Arab Dynasty.

That's not my point. (Though it's not unheard of for Christians to maintain that Christianity in effect supersedes Judaism.) My point is was that plenty of Jews have maintained that the trinity is a perversion of the monotheism that the Old Testament insists on at such length in just the same way that Mormons get kicked around for having the wrong views about the Trinity.

It's not a direct parallel, but I think of the 1924 election.
Harding's administration was beset by the worst scandal in American history, the Tea Pot Dome scandal.
Harding dies. Coolidge becomes President. Coolidge was never touched by Tea Pot Dome, but the American public still rewarded the party in power because the economy was doing so well.
It's definitely not a direct parallel, but I think it's instructive in thinking how much the American people value "corruption" over issues like the economy.

More than that they claim the successions of the Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran churches are also valid(in addition to various others).
But I may have given a misimpression of the idea. The priests all receive training and "passing of grace" from someone up the chain. At some point, there's an Apostle who was taught by Christ and played a role in establishing churches in various regiions.
The Pope is not necessarily from Peter's chain of students(we would largely be unable to discern from which for any given priest). The Papacy is a succession of offices.
The original governing practices are roughly modeled after the Sanehedrin, which is how you get councils and papal ratification when serious controversies emerge.

I've said this before: Putin has a map of 1973 on the wall. More or less Peak USSR, the Warsaw Pact was at its peak, US was bailing from Vietnam and in turmoil at home, Soviet funding of Western Europe leftist groups was having effect, their Mideast proxies were still building for the October War and we hadn't bought Egypt off them in the aftermath, the West at the feet of hostile OPEC Arab states.
Putin wants the world of 1973 back. That's his goal. He can't get there. He knows that. He will never live to see it himself. But he can take incremental steps. He can undermine Western Europe with energy carrots and sticks. He can nibble bits of the old 'near abroad'. He can throw a bit of help to old Mideast allies because even a failed state is more harmful to the West than a stable neutral one.
He's doing what he can with the means at his disposal, and that's all. In what he perceives as the interest of his country, and in that he's not entirely wrong. You expect him to kowtow to Merkel?
Ukraine, etc. are kinda ablative for us. We're not going to war to protect them, and at this point I think, I hope, Putin is smart enough to acknowledge that Poland Czech and probably the Baltics are out of his reach. He can't go anywhere without petrochemical revenues. The best thing we can do is constrain his government economically.

Right, I've read that too along with the proposition that many areas easily accepted Islam because it was better than the oppressive Byz empire christianity. Problem is, I don't believe that they gladly accepted muhammadism. That's actually in the history text books, as if Islam was a kinder master than Christianity. No, but it was far more likely to kill you. Also even the non-arabs got sick of the arab's shit and rebeled.
I'm more of the school that the region was still reeling (and still is arguably) from the long fall of Rome. Sorta like the germans literally couldn't accept democracy because they didn't understand it and wanted an authority. Byzantium which was really only pseudo-western was dying from its start. It had assumed the mantle of Rome but was very greek and heavily influenced by Persia. They argued religion like we argue politics, and the resultant heresies and schisms weakened their rule, agreed. Western civilization survived in western europe almost entirely through the roman catholic church and the laws that they inherited.

You know what, I think I finally understand.
Yes, we reject all of the twiddling with theology that was done after Christ's death in order to align schisms and explain and understand points of doctrine that theologians were arguing about.
The Council of Nicea, the Council of Chalcedon, the ECT are all statements of theologians.
If you want to call that "Orthodox" Christianity, I won't complain. I do think it's odd, given that the people who organized those councils don't claim to have had divine revelation guiding them.
Just don't try and tell me I'm not a Christian, given my core guiding beliefs are centered on the Jesus Christ of the Bible, the one that doesn't need any of that twiddling or aligning schisms or man-made and not divine councils.

For those that are interested, there are some good discussions of the development of faith-Will and Ariel Durant, for example, have a pretty good discussion of both theology and historical development of religion in their multi volume tome. Gibbons does a similarly dispassionate and irreligious take on religion's influence on history. Not as familar with Buddhism, Hinduism, or Zoroastrianism which the Durants covers a bit of in a few of their tomes.
There is also quite a bit of history regarding the Nicean creed, the rise of Eastern Orthodoxy and the Roman Catholic Church in a variety of publications. The rise of Protestantism is often best done by reading the original progenitors of the various strains.
And then there are the critics of all religions to consider. Round and round it goes, with no resolution except the grave. Only then might we get to know.

God sent Jesus to kick His people in the butt.
He did it to cause eternal tension between His chosen people and His people the future Christians.
He tried everything else to get his people to pay attention so now He gave them a boot.
Think of the lobe of a cam. As it rotates everything is smooth until the lobe strikes the Israelites butt then it's smooth; it continues it's rotation and strikes the Christians butt.
A never ending tension and release calling His children to attention.

Very traditional, too. The Compromise of 1850 could not pass as a unit so it was broken into parts and passed, with different factions voting no on parts or abstaining.
Other times, like perhaps the Texas admission they make the lump politically palatable by lumping in things that each faction could feel they could vote for.
So here, an omnibus keeps any game where Dems get witnesses and Rs don't -- or vice versa -- off the table. So Ds have to decide if they want to risk HBiden or Schiff being put under oath in public for this or let it end here.

I am of the opinion that about 30 percent of that 90 is pure vote fraud. If the dems could convince 90 percent to vote for them, they would use the same techniques on everyone.
This is far higher than the percentage of *Registered Democrats* that end up voting Dem.
