Perhaps The Days Of Blank Checks For Every Crazy Academic With A Grudge Is Ending?

Probably not, but making it uncomfortable for academia's anti-American, anti-Semitic, anti-market economics proclivities is always a good thing. Georgetown Gets a Title VI Wakeup Call

Rep. George Holding (R-N.C.) won't be retiring from the House until next year, but he's already left his mark on academe. This past tax day, he sent Education Secretary Molly DeVos a letter objecting to the Duke-UNC Consortium for Middle East Studies' (CMES) use of federal Title VI funds for the anti-Semitic performance of a Palestinian rapper at UNC in March. A flurry of communications between Department of Education (DoE) and UNC officials resulted, most notably the ominous August DoE letter detailing CMES' myriad violations of Title VI regulations.

Almost overnight, the higher education lobby suffered an emotional meltdown, House Democrats expressed their "concern" by demanding a raft of DoE documents, and academics fretted that public support might become contingent on performance rather than privilege.

As Lenin (or Marx) famously never said..."The Capitalists will sell us the rope with which we will hang them." Maybe we are finally noticing that unqualified support for the rabid America-Haters in our universities is not a very good idea. The good thing is that they are , in the main, cowards, and will fight only when in a crowd. So cut them out of the herd and end their funding, one anti-Semite at a time.

So much of this funding can be controlled by the various departments (thanks to Chevron vs. NRDC), so a chief executive who isn't a dog-eating America hater might be able to do some real damage to the embedded progressives in our ivory towers.

Yo, this is the "performance" we as a public should expect: don't go suppressing views you don't like. Don't set up Star Chamber proceedings to convict class, race and gender enemies. Don't let phony-baloney administrative positions proliferate. Get rid of academic ghettos that promote a single position. Stop the mobbing of unpopular colleagues. Quit the obsession with identity.

Not the one that gives dozens of dollars a month to unwed mothers, but the form of welfare that gives billions of dollars a year to privileged college kids to go to enormously wealthy universities.

38 How can one instruct a child in the way that is informed and profitable when you actively exclude the one source of objective, verifiable moral instruction from their learning by dictate?

A man can not teach you morality because they do not possess any morals. Man can only offer opinion, and in most cases opinion which they themselves do not follow or adhere to and which they have not investigated in the least.

You'd find it easier to teach Calculus to a child from whom you'd withheld a basic arithmetic book.

Our entire education system instructs, but it does not teach.

39 Academia is in terminal decline. Factors that will cause it to collapse in no particular order:

Falling birthrate means less overall students
Rise of vocational track means less share of smaller population
Rising tuition makes less economic sense

So far, it's keeping these trends at bay by importing rich Chinese kids, but that gravy train is about to end. China's in a bad way and the precious princes are going to disappear.

And then things will get interesting.

All those stories about the student protests don't tell you that it is usually 4 or 5 so-called loudmouth students and they are helped by individuals off campus who are not students. Agreed. Prospective faculty in the sciences, especially at big name universities, know that tenure depends on their ability to bring in grants. For many of them, lecturing is simply not a priority.

I see no reason not to have the best lecturers provide lectures online, and let those who want to devote themselves strictly to research do so.

77 I do think online course work is the way to go. Throwing a bunch of nitwits together in one place makes absolutely no sense, and is of course, counterproductive when it comes to learning.

Too many other distractions.

My dream, by the way, includes completely removing the big time athletics away from schools, and into semi-pro leagues, or some other such thing.

If you want to play in the NBA or NFL, why on God's green Earth are we making you go to school? And if you just want to play recreationally while you are at school, here's a gym. Get 4 of your friends together, set up some games against other fellas. Have fun!

Agreed on all counts.

Here's the nice thing about online coursework: it selects for people who are motivated. Most of the kids will just fart around, and that's OK. They're plucking themselves out of the candidate pool, and at no expense to the taxpayer (or mom and dad, for that matter).

So do they REALLY want to learn something, or just mark time and party for four years? Let's find out.

They apparently didn't realize that the point of a lecture demonstration isn't just to watch it, but rather the drama of the possibility that it might go wrong.

But for lower division undergrad labs, virtual experiments would probably suffice, and certainly would be cheaper (and safer). But at some point a prospective scientist has to belly up to a lab bench, for the experience, and to develop laboratory technique.

You gotta further feed your ego, by getting a little trophy?

Good grief, never in the history of ever has anything ever been more self-indulgently unimportant that Grammy awards.

At least with Oscars, it's possible to make a movie that nobody sees, and go up there on the glitzy award show, and tell everyone how special your little project was.

Nobody gives awards to Michael Bay movies. Star Wars ain't up for "Best Picture," simply because it sells shedloads of tickets.

Way back in undergraduate chemistry, we were supposed to heat some organic mixture (I can't remember exactly what, but it included an alcohol).
This was supposed to be done by placing the covered beaker containing the mixture into a larger beaker containing water, so as to gently heat it. Someone didn't get the memo, and put the uncovered smaller beaker directly over a Bunsen burner. Naturally, the fumes ignited into a fireball.

The grad student running the lab hadn't a clue what to do, so we vacated the lab. That was a memorable day, I can tell you.

To freshman, most of whom had only recently reached voting age. Luckily her advisors (mentor and academic) helped her switch into a Spanish literature class, which she enjoyed, but she's no longer minoring in it.

117 So, question for the old'uns.

In the movie Holiday Inn there is a scene early in the movie where Bing Crosby goes into the dressing room of his fiance and notices that the hooks on the back of her dress are not hooked in the correct order and the hook at the top is unhooked. Soon thereafter Fred Astaire goes into her dressing room and notices the same thing about the hooks.

SPOILER ALERT

Is there something about the hooks that suggests that she is not committed or that she is romantically flighty since she dumps both Crosby and Astaire?

Thanks

*I deliberately avoided asking if it meant she was a slut or a whore because I kind of like the movie and did not want to get into that or what the modern day version would have had Crosby and Astaire doing to her in the dressing room.

Undergrad labs are generally made pretty idiot-proof, but a synthesis laboratory is intrinsically a pretty dangerous place. I put out nine fires (only one in my lab, I hasten to add), wore a respirator twice (in both cases, because I wasn't about to breathe the shit that was burning - muy toxic), and put out the fires on two people who'd set themselves ablaze.

Posted by: pep at January 26, 2020 01:14 PM (T6t7i)

That was what happened to one of the two people who'd set themselves ablaze. I was the grad student (actually, still an undergrad) in the first course I ever taught. The student tried to blow out the fire in the beaker, thereby dousing himself with burning methanol. But I didn't freak; I just threw him on the ground and covered his head (his hair was on fire) with a spare lab coat.

Today's education can be replaced with games on phones. And tests on phones.

I can testify on the amount of energy boys and girls spend on winning computer games.

I aver it can be made fun and educational. Even labs can be done with open story lines, free assembly of lab equipment, and data queued to their experimental setup. Been thinking on how Organic Chem Lab can be done with some software. Including the ether fires.

Yeah, he's a weasel. Any perspective or action on the part of a Democrat only matters in the context of what the polls say.

One imagines Goodstein being questioned about Satan.

Carlson: "Well, Richard, what do you think about Satan?"

insufficiently diverse, tough. Try harder next time.

This is only part of the problem. Academia has become cartelized: you can only start an accredited college if you have the OK from the system, and you have to do and accept what the others require: Tuition, certification, and public grants.
If the system was a free market, the skyrocketing tuitions would cause other institutions to open up to make some of that profit, but they don't.

All academia is of the same stamp, and there is a choke on any upstarts. Even private colleges are forced to obey if they want federal and state monies.

I don't care what the admission standards are, but there needs to be an end to all the colleges being standardized and having their risk of economic failure (because they can't actually teach) taken away by guaranteed support from the government.
