Saturday Afternoon Chess Thread 01-25-2020

GM Ju Wenjun 01.jpg
GM Ju Wenjun (CHN)

Pic Note

Congratulations to Ju Wenjun for retaining her World Women's Championship title. This is actually a three-peat. For the country of China itself, it's a five-peat. The Chinese women basically own this title, having held it a total of 22 years since 1991.

Moviegique will be along later with the movie thread. As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Beginner Problem - White To Play (422)

White can capture Black's rook for the win with this one surprising move!
(Reminder: 2 knights alone cannot force checkmate)

Hint: The first move is not a check

20200125 - Problem 1.jpg
8/8/8/8/8/2Nk4/2r1N3/KB6 w - - 0 1

Intermediate Problem - White To Play (427)

Goal: White can win a piece
Hint: Set up a bishop fork

20200125 - Problem 2.jpg
6k1/pppr2pp/8/3bp3/8/8/PPP1BPPP/2KR4 w - - 0 1

Advanced Problem - White To Play (483)

OK, since this is a composition with a specific goal, I think it's OK to tell you what the goal is, which is that White can force a mate in 5. I think it's devlishly tricky, and I'm ashamed to tell you I had to have my chess app find the answer for me, because I completely whiffed on it. Maybe some of you will do better, I hope. Here are a couple of hints, but it's hard for me to tell how helpful they'll be:

Hint 1: Underpromotion is not involved
Hint 2: The pawn stays where it is.

Problem Solutions

Beginner Problem - White To Play

20200125 - Problem 1.jpg
8/8/8/8/8/2Nk4/2r1N3/KB6 w - - 0 1

So the problem is to figure out how to wrest the rook away from Black and still have enough material to win the game. You just can't take it with the biahop, because you'll be left with only 2 knights, which is insufficient for checkmate.

1.Ne4

Now Black has to move his king, as the rook is pinned.

1...Kxe4

2.Bxc2+ and the B+N checkmate is difficult, but doable.

Intermediate Problem - White To Play

20200125 - Problem 2.jpg
6k1/pppr2pp/8/3bp3/8/8/PPP1BPPP/2KR4 w - - 0 1

1.Bg4 Rd6

There are two other options:

1...Rd8 2. Rxd5 Rxd5 3. Be6+
1...Re7 2. Rxd5

Either one leads to a fork, as does the main line:

2.Rxd5 Rxd5
3.Be6+ Kf8
4.Bxd5 and wins

Black cannot escape the bishop fork.

Advanced Problem - White To Play

20200125 - Problem 3.jpg
8/8/8/8/8/Q7/4p3/5k1K w - - 0 1

Not sure if there's much explaining I can do. This is one of those problems whose solutions you just have to see. And, as I said, I didn't. So this is what my app told me. I found the other line starting with Black's 2nd move since it was my way of testing the app's solution, and it held up.

1.Qf8+! Ke1
2.Qd6 Kf2

Or 2...Kf1 3.Qf4+ Ke1 4.Qd4 Kf1 5.Qg1#

3.Qf4+ Ke1
4.Qd4 Kf1
5.Qg1#

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

What an amazing movie. Not what I expected. I thought WW1, the move would deal with grand sweep of battles and armies marching hither and yon, did not think it would be so narrowly and intimately focused.Still a remarkable movie and yes, Mrs. Muse made liberal use of the tissues she brought. 37 I think the answer to problem 1 is move the knight to E4. Black can't move the rook, it is pinned. Black has no choice but to take the knight, allowing white to take the rook for check.

Not sure how to proceed from there to mate, but could be done by forcing black to a corner using the 3 remaining pieces.

Not sure what you're looking at, but B might as well take one of the knights for the rook. You can checkmate with B and N but it takes some doing to get the K to a corner and delivering the final check. 50 moves is possible to stalemate if playing someone who keeps allowing the K to escape.

Posted by: Bilwis Devourer of Low Glycemic Souls at January 25, 2020 05:54 PM (Wm5SB)

59 Wonderful. Braun (IN) told the press that he's not saying it's appropriate to "coerce" a foreign leader to "investigate a political rival", but that "it didn't happen".

So now political figures in the US have immunity from investigation of wrong-doing if a foreign government might be involved in investigating said wrong-doing? Even if the wrong-doing were committed while in public office?

Sweet.

So when this impeachment farce is over (soon), the very clear if implicit take-away will be that malfeasance of political figures cannot be investigated if a foreign govt. is involved. Maybe not even so implicit.

Because the GOP, and WH, either don't have the guts or clarity to obliterate such an idiotic implication, which is central to the ridiculous attacks by the Dems.

65 Commander Schmitz, I have been a proud life member of the VFW for 20 years. I was taken aback by your release Jan 24, in which you demand an apology from President Trump regarding what you see as a mischaracterization of the brain injuries suffered by our troops in Iraq on Jan 8. You claim to speak for ALL veterans, and use your voice as commander of the VFW to do so. It is striking that you chose to push this demand over remarks the president made several days ago, when the pentagon only upgraded the nature of the injuries to TBI on Friday. The conclusion I draw is that you used the Pentagons statement as a cover to use MY voice and the voice of my fellow veterans to further your own personal agenda and strike the President with a rebuke from the VFW on the very day the Democrats were finishing their impeachment case against the president. This is a reprehensible act by you, and will not be sufficed with a "I am sorry you were offended" non-apology, You have failed as a leader of the VFW, and the only respectable course you can take is a public apology and resignation. I do not wish to be affiliated with, nor have an organization lead by you use my voice to further your cause. Please accept the resignation of my life membership. Yeah I don't think many are aware of the injuries found with some targeted in the al-Asad missile attack.

But it only illustrates (not that it should need empirical demonstration) that this very dubious idea of "restraint" based on immediately-known outcomes, and assumptions about enemy intentions, is ludicrous, and dangerous.

We control every rung in the escalation ladder, Iran doesn't even have the top few rungs, and materially hurting them and humiliating them is the smart response, every time. Many many options to do this in ways that don't induce mass-fainting episodes among America's dumbed-down citizens.

91 Ignoramus, though I was in earshot of one of the top FCPA experts for years, it wasn't my area, so didn't pay much attention - would FCPA in fact work "the other way around" if corrupt action on our end (say, arranging a bizarre CFIUS approval of a very dubious uranium deal, or not pursuing corruption investigations of certain foreign energy concerns) were linked to $$$ going to American individuals and entities?

The "bribe" would be the US official action/inaction, even though the cash $$ would flow the other direction.

Not only that, Dershowitz is on Trump's trial team. Schiff made pointed comments in his direction, and to Ken Starr, during his closing speech last night.

The speakers today only spoke for a little under 2 hours, but during that time made plenty of direct and indirect references to how long the Dems took, their repetitiveness in their presentations, and showing the same video clips over and over, to the point of mockery sometimes.

I don't think either side wants it. And not because of the Bidens or Ukraine corruption. The cucked GOP would never go for the jugular like that because they are dickless. Also, many of them are certainly in on it.

I think Trump and McConnell want this wrapped up without the opportunity for any surprise Beach Friends tactics from the Dems, or opportunities for the media to keep spinning this thing out in an election year.

I think the Dems have more-or-less hung their hats on bombshell testimony from Bolton that is unlikely to materialize outside of their masturbatory fantasies, and they know it.

That would be yet another disastrous Mueller-style moment in Congress that makes the nation sneer with derision. So the second-best thing is to have no witnesses and spend nine months screaming that the GOP suppressed testimony.

I am betting on no witnesses. Everyone's happy that way.

170 On problem 2 I think it is white bishop to C4.

If black moves the bishop F7, white takes the rook.

If black takes the bishop, white takes the rook so it is a trade of a bishop for a rook, which is in white's favor.

If black makes any other move, white takes the bishop, black takes the bishop, and white takes the rook.

No matter the outcome, black at best will trade a bishop for a rook.

While the press' problems are of long-standing, in recent times there's been a general collapse. And their distortion still frames the world for tens of millions, possibly half or more of the country. Incredible.

Speaking of things happening but not happening to the American press, France is beset with strikes and protests, and Iran is pulling out all stops to defend its predominant position in Iraq (killing protesters again, but the unrest is real and broad, and the intimidation isn't working, a real civil war brewing within the Shi'a majority).

Doubt the French protests offer much hope, probably about $$$.

I recall the super-heavyweight wrestler for the "Unified Team" (name given to the former Soviet Olympic team for the '92 Olympics, as there wasn't time to organize separate national teams), who was from Novosibirsk, had the nickname "The Experiment". He was huge. And, notably, proportional - not a "big" wrestler, just a scaled-up Greek statue-like strong athlete. Trim and muscular.

Only guy ever in the weight class whose opponents allowed him to pin them (often, quickly) - to avoid injury. He could actually pick these guys up, as happens in much much smaller weight classes. Hilarious.

He was 15 lbs. at birth. As the color guy on TV said when this factoid was mentioned - "oh, his poor mother!".

I don't think Kasparov is liberal. But he hates Putin with a passion and so if anybody, for any reason, says something nice about Putin or tries to deal with him in any way that is not 100% hostile, Kasparov will conclude that guy likes dictators.

So the closest thing Kasparov can be described as is a NeverTrump conservative.

353 Here is how I think you have to play problem 3.

Queen to F3 for check.

Black has no move other than King to E1.

Queen to E3.

Black has to move King to D1, because moving back to F1 is mate on next move with Queen to G1.

White King to G1 which closes off the entire F column to black King.

Black could go to C2, but White then takes the pawn, so Black needs to go back to E1 to keep protecting it. But then white Queen to C1 is mate, so I guess C2 is Black's only move.

White queen takes pawn and check.

But then the black King can move to row 3. White can get to mate, but not in 5 this way.

Forcing in 5? I'm stuck.

Gotta change that narrative from it breaking out 8.6 miles away from the only level 4 bioweapon research and development facility. And ignore the posted gene sequence of the Bat-SARS that came from the market. And ignore all the research and development in human to human transmission of Bat-SARs including the one the Chinese military created and published.

Bat-SARS started off safe with no symptoms a month earlier. Trust the Chinese. Nothing to hide.

413 Eris that may be what Felton's video is about. I do vaguely half-recall something about a possible German weather station on a Soviet island (Novaya Zemlya?), some artifacts had been discovered or something.

For the Ardennes offensive in '44, several U-boats were posted to North Atlantic weather duty (bad weather, normal for the period, was key to Hitler's concept - neutralizing Allied air superiority).

Some of the best "snatches" related to Ultra code breaking were from German weather ships in the North Sea and further north.

1. put the crime scene DNA online.
2. find a couple of second cousins who are matches,
3. create their family trees until you get a name of someone who had some connection to the crime (lived or worked nearby, was interviewed originally, etc)
4. Get that person's dna from something thrown away

428 It's a little more like:
1. put the crime scene DNA online.
2. find a couple of second cousins who are matches,
3. create their family trees until you get a name of someone who had some connection to the crime (lived or worked nearby, was interviewed originally, etc)
4. Get that person's dna from something thrown away
5. If you get a match to that, then get the arrest warrant

456 I have only two real connections to anything - one is my best friend who was a former US attorney in Eastern NY and one who is now a reporter with a decent size financial and political paper after a short career on Wall St - we talk every weekend and the subject of crazy NPR lady came up - his under the table news? She's radioactive. The WH has cut off NPR to senior access and they are hopping mad - the NPR has appealed to Dem Senator connections they have who tried to calm the situation and resurrect access - WH Comm Dept told them to "get bent" - NPR lady essentially worked a long time schmoozing to get this high level interview thru State Comms people connections and then ran in to the interview with a suicide vest on and shouted "Allah NPR!" and blew herself up - that's his analogy. She'll never get access to anyone again and NPR is cut off - after the Dem Senators got the word that no one in Trump Admin was going to back down, they whined to the press apparently - but the damage is done.

My friend explained that these jobs are plums, the competition is fierce for these situations, so none of her "colleagues" are going to help her here, licking their chops at the employment hole she created for herself - I won't cry either.

459 With the Intermediate problem's solution being:

1.Bg4 Rd6

There are two other options:

1...Rd8 2. Rxd5 Rxd5 3. Be6+
1...Re7 2. Rxd5

Either one leads to a fork, as does the main line:

2.Rxd5 Rxd5
3.Be6+ Kf8
4.Bxd5 and wins

Black cannot escape the bishop fork.

Instead of Kf8, why not Kf6 on line 3? It probably only delays the inevitable for black, but it seems like a better option. Or am I missing the obvious again?

462 I had a hard time trying to figure out why he wasn't barking at my stepson for getting in the recliner. Then it dawned on me. I have a woolen blanket up there that my husband used, so he's calmed down.

My stepson lived in this house his whole life. He grew up with the kid next door. His friend wanted to talk to him last night but TJ wouldn't come in. Dawned on me last night he couldn't deal with coming here and not seeing my husband. And that's what he told my stepson this morning. They're off together tonight which will be good for them both.

467 Boswell, interesting. Your intel is solid and direct. I did see the predictable whining and absurd crap about "attack" on the press - but presumably not from those hoping to dine on her demise.

But I'll repeat my comment about no longer doing anything - not a word - "off the record". That whole device was enormously helpful to real reporters, but crap like this has destroyed it. And actually the overall bad faith, dishonesty, and stupidity of recent years should have moved targeted subjects to end them, out of prudence.
