Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | President Trump goes to Davos [KT]Conversation was instead dominated by three seething conflicts that many participants see as existential in their long-term implications for the global order. -- There is the conflict over the future of capitalism. -- There is the conflict over the future of technology. -- Above all, there is the conflict over the future of the planet. On the "future of the planet", it is remarkable that Greta Thunberg was considered to be the person of the moment. Perhaps one reason the Politico piece took such a ho-hum attitude about Trump is that he highlighted the failed predictions of climate activists. (h/t J.J. Sefton) Then he said this: We will never let radical socialists destroy our economy, wreck our country, or eradicate our liberty. America will always be the proud, strong, and unyielding bastion of freedom . . .Sgt. Mom had a nice piece on how environmentalists now "make the most perfectly hissable villains, because they almost invariably make matters worse in the long run." On the "future of capitalism", in a post about whether professional economists are idiots, here is an interesting statement from Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Wharton MBA, mathematical finance PhD and author of Skin in the Game and The Black Swan: The professional economist is the specialist who is instrumental in designing various measures of government interference with business.I will leave it to people who have more background in economics than I do to sort out the actual post. The folks at Instapundit kept track of the doings in Davos with several links. A sampling: Don Surber: Trump's remarkable remarks at Davos.President Donald John Trump's address at Davos this morning was a lesson on governance by a man who entered politics less than 5 years ago. Our president said, "America's newfound prosperity is undeniable, unprecedented and unmatched anywhere in the world. America achieved this stunning turnaround not by making minor changes to a handful of policies, but by adopting a whole new approach centered entirely on the well-being of the American worker." That is incredible. A billionaire spoke to fellow billionaires, fellow world leaders, and academics not about the swell digs they were staying at or the lush cuisine they enjoyed. President Trump talked about actually serving the people who entrusted them with power.Walter Russell Mead: There is something inescapably ridiculous about a gathering this self-important; certainly Marie Antoinette and her friends dressing up as shepherdesses to celebrate the simple life has nothing on the more than 100 billionaires descending, often by private jet, on an exclusive Swiss ski resort for four days of ostentatious hand-wringing about the problems of the poor and the dangers of climate change. This year an earnest young aide at registration told me that, to reduce the event's carbon footprint, no paper maps of the town were being distributed; one could almost feel the waves of relief from the nearby Alpine glaciers at this sign of green progress. Yet smirk as one may, and sometimes as one must, this year's WEF arrived at a difficult time for the Davoisie--those who are at home in the thin air of this global gathering. Leaders the world over are now having to come to grips with a new age of populism, nationalism and protectionism. . .Issues and Insights: Greta Hectors Davos: Why Are Elitists Thrilled To Be Lectured By A Child Who Knows Nothing? "But to embrace the possibilities of tomorrow, we must reject the
perennial prophets of doom and their predictions of the apocalypse," Trump continued. "They are the heirs of yesterday's foolish fortune-tellers - and I have them and you have them, and we all have them, and they want to see us do badly, but we don't let that happen. They predicted an overpopulation crisis in the 1960s, mass starvation in the '70s, and an end of oil in the 1990s. On Taleb. This is *excellent* ... a friend of mine has been searching for the right answer to this question and this must be pretty close:
========== Taleb, a Wall Street trader prior to his writing and academic career, echoes Franklin's emphasis on direct experience, arguing that capitalism isn't an ideology or system but a set of mutually agreeable arrangements worked out over the centuries through trial and error by market participants who bear the full consequences of their decisions. ========== Posted by: Enquiring Minds Want to Know at January 25, 2020 11:28 AM (XzVUd) 20

They didn't have any choice. But I believe that the tedious, repetitive delivery was on purpose. It bored people into not watching so that they then maybe rely on "recaps" by the press. The problem with economics and climatologists is they impose their ignorance onto topics too complex to be understood. Both Chaos and Complexity theory address this idea--some things are so complex that no matter how much information you have or how much processing power, they cannot be understood well enough for meaningful predictions. A lesser know field, Catastrophe Theory, adds an additional set of math to consider--those things which appear stable are only stable within tightly defined constraints. A single variable whose tolerance is exceeded can bring the whole thing down in a second. This is the core of conservatism--once something has been discovered that works, for the love of G-d don't mess with it. It is probably the result of millions of trials and errors.

You take the dog's rear paw and gently try to curl it over longitudinally so it's top is touching the floor. A dog with no spinal nerve damage won't keep it there for even a fraction of a second. Based on that test they can prescribe steroids and other things that help a bit. The problem with economics and climatologists is they impose their ignorance onto topics too complex to be understood.
That was Michael Crichton's position. He wasn't sure what was going on either way, but he knew that the atmosphere and global climate is too complex to be modeled on a computer or predicted accurately in locally. I'm waiting for some GOP Senator (or even reasonably visible pundit) to suggest that, should the GOP retake the House, McCarthy and the rest of the leadership should move ethics investigations of Schiff and Nadler with the goal of expelling them from the House (should they be reelected, which given their districts is probably a given.)
Posted by: JEM at January 25, 2020 12:29 PM (8erNz) I think there's lots of smoking gun smell around both of those guys. Schiff, it's not just that he's bought and paid for by foreign governments, which he is, it's his sexual interests that are likely to come out sooner or later. I think they'd like him to take Feinsteen's spot. Him or somebody else who's fully on board with bending over for China. Frankly though, I can't see him coming out of all this as someone anyone wants near to power. He's worse than Anthony Weener, in that regard. Or John Edwards. Egad, the reprobates in that party... it's astonishing, really, except when one realizes, they elected Bill twice, and really really really tried as hard as they could to get Hillory elected. Evil. That's the only word I can come up with for it. Posted by: BurtTC at January 25, 2020 12:36 PM (hku12) 308

Yeah the Climaquiddick email dump proved it. Before that point there was almost total consensus and broad support for the idea. After it people saw the lies, manipulation, deliberate destruction of data, and bad science being done -- particularly fellow scientists -- and the whole thing fell apart. Look if you're a chemical engineer, you just assume your colleague in atmospheric physics is doing his job correctly, you can't take the time to review everything or know all the stuff they are doing. You know, what everyone knows, but I guess they can't say, is that impeachment of the President should be a LAST RESORT kind of thing. It should be what the other side reluctantly does, when they think the country is being seriously harmed by the President, as he continues to operate with impunity, recklessly damaging the nation. Which of course isn't the case here... and no, it really wasn't the case with Clitton either. I mean, as dangerous as it was to have Clitton as President, they tried him for stuff that was technically illegal, but really wasn't the high crime needed to bring him to trial. Posted by: Infidel at January 25, 2020 01:18 PM (MTxDQ) The entire property tax paradigm is broken. The only taxes that should apply to real property should be to provide payment for services that benefit such property, or for capital expenditures (in the form of bond issues) that enhance the value of such property. And they should not be based on "assessed value", but on tangibles, like land area, and square footage of habitable dwelling space. School operating expenses should not come out of property tax revenue, but school building capital costs should, by way of bond issues. (build a nicer school building, you attract better teachers, and attract a better class of homeowner, too, at least in theory) Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 25, 2020 01:33 PM (LxWV7) 493

Giants fans will probably think Eli was great, because sure, why not. Probably lots of the same people who think Scott Brosius was great.
--------------------------------------------------------------------- Eli was great. HOF? I don't know, but he won 2 Super Bowls, never missed a game due to injury on 16 seasons and never embarrassed himself, his family, his team or his country. It's not his fault that he he played for a team with a lousy line on both sides of the ball for the past few years or that he played for a team that never was an offensive powerhouse. Guys like Tony Romo looked more alpha and slung the ball around, but he never won a playoff game and in fact, always lost when the game was on the line. Manning didn't. Manning didn't. Posted by: JoeF. at January 25, 2020 01:36 PM (CqE5x) Of course, if Romo is one's comp, for career analysis, you're already saying the guy's not great. I like to use baseball for comparison, because the numbers tend to be more easily understandable. So let's say you are a shortstop playing in Cleveland in the 60s or 70s (I'm not talking about anyone specifically). Let's say you hit .275 every ear, knock 15-20 homers every year, and play good defense. Now, let's say you play for the Red Sox in the 2000s, and hit .300 every year, smash 30-35 homers a year... and play mediocre defense. Oh, and you were probably juicing. Who was the better player? Objectively, we know, but our minds don't often let us see what's right in front of us. We get seduced by the numbers. Posted by: BurtTC at January 25, 2020 01:50 PM (hku12) 536

Posted by: BurtTC at January 25, 2020 01:42 PM (hku12) I understand your points but football is an entirely different sport than baseball, where if a guy hits .300 and plays good defense on one team, he's likely to do the same for another team. Even great pitchers who have less-than-stellar W-L records are cut slack if they have a low ERA throughout their career with crappy teams. Football is different. QBs have to rely so much on their lines, their backs and their receivers. A guy misses a block, another guy drops a perfectly thrown pass. Or your best, most dependable receiver breaks an ankle--or shoots himself in the leg. Then, they often play for shitty coaches or offensive co-ordinators. Manning had some shitty coaches the last couple years of his career, a crappy line, talented but flighty and often hurt receivers. He lost something, sure, but no one around him gave him any help. I understand your points but football is an entirely different sport than baseball, where if a guy hits .300 and plays good defense on one team, he's likely to do the same for another team. Posted by: JoeF. at January 25, 2020 02:03 PM (CqE5x) Right, I know. QBs are quite dependent on the team around them... but then, so it is the other way around as well. Funny thing about baseball stats though, it really DOES often depend on team, when it comes to defensive numbers. If you have a high strikeout pitching staff, your SS defense numbers are going to be lower. Or if you have a revolving door of crappy second basemen... or the field is not well maintained. All sorts of factors come into play. And of course, if you play in a bandbox, your offensive numbers will be higher. Posted by: squirrelly dan at January 25, 2020 01:56 PM (lfIv5) Present some evidence from a credible source then. Not "it could happen" but that it did. What do you mean by "the Chinese government"? Xi, the central comittee? What happens in China, including this case apparently, is that *local* officials cover things up to avoid getting their asses kicked by the higher ups. When the problem got sufficiently important for Xi to step in, he ordered a complete shutdown of travel and cancelled the biggest holiday in the country. What has Trump done? Reassured everyone that the CDC was on top of things. So far, this appears to be correct. I posted a link from a non-chinese source with a complete explanation of the history of the outbreak that agrees for the most part with all the crap the daily-mail has been publishing for the past week. Your response was "chinese propaganda" ... now, that may be true but source of my article was not a chinese outlet (I checked after you made this accusation). Posted by: garrett at January 25, 2020 02:16 PM (5COpT) Yep. The asymptomatic period is 14 days. That's the problem. It can be spread via small water drops in the air after a cough and get in the eyes. The Chinese government has admitted this. So that's a problem when you can infect people for 14 days without showing symptoms. Sounds extremely nasty and I have no doubt China would entomb the entire Wuhan area, but they instead worried about containing the news rather than the virus so it got a big headstart. It's interesting to watch what China is doing and saying at an accelerated speed now. 41 claimed dead with 1300 known infected with a quarantine of 56 million people. That dog doesn't hunt. JackStraw, not sure that's true (Schiff screwed Dem senators).
Public is clearly uninterested/not engaged with this disgraceful abuse of power by the House Dems. Which cuts both ways. Acquittal will be by a healthy margin. "Free votes" for Dems voting "not guilty" aren't even needed, but may occur - if any Dems actually think they need it. No consequences seem likely for Dems participating in this disgrace. House side, might be different story. Impeachment farce might play in re-election of freshmen in "Trump districts". More likely though that simple "presidential effect" on turnout in those districts will be as important (in unseating them) as any specific marginal impact of impeachment votes. Exactly which "witnesses" did not testify or give depositions to the House? Which ones? List of names, please.
Can senators read transcripts or comprehend video? This is entirely aside from the fundamental point that nothing particularly interesting and nothing the least bit illegal or improper occurred. The Senate needs a repeat of what is available already in the record? Idiocy. I have an idea for a witness. A panel of constitutional lawyers who can confirm, again and again, that disputes over executive privilege are historically handled by the courts (dubious in itself, but the "norm"). The House carefully/deliberately avoided judicial action (even withdrawing one action to avoid it). So the panel could be asked how the novel concept of "obstruction of Congress" squared with the House's careful avoidance of the accepted path to pursue their claim. The Chinese scientist that was arrested in Canada
was transferring Ebola and Hennipah virus, which is very similar to some corona viruses, to the Wuhan facility. They are both carried by bats. Declaring it a conspiracy it stupid and unimaginative. What she did may or may not have been related to the current virus outbreak but to dismiss it out of hand is nonsense. "As the mysterious coronavirus spreads and prompting U.S. health officials to screen thousands for signs of the disease a Northwestern University professor is leading a multipronged effort to try to stop it in its tracks.
Karla Satchell, a professor of microbiology-immunology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, is leading a team of U.S. and Canadian researchers to examine the atomic structure of the virus, which originated in Wuhan, China, in the Hubei province. Satchell leads the Center for Structural Genomics of Infectious Diseases, a consortium of nine labs at eight schools collaborating on this effort. Other institutions in the consortium are University of Chicago, Purdue University, Washington University, University of Virginia, University of Calgary, UT Southwestern Medical Center and Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in San Diego. Satchell said the consortium, in place since 2007, functions as a sort of rapid response research operation that can mobilize immediately to quickly find solutions for public health emergencies. We are here specifically for this; Satchell said in an interview Friday. If there is a crisis like this, the last thing you want is for the (National Institutes of Health) to say, let's put out a call for grants and take seven months to review them. We are here and we have entirely trained staff. We are able to pivot almost immediately to respond. Posted by: runner at January 25, 2020 03:05 PM (zr5Kq) 676

Both SARS and MERS are types of coronaviruses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The proteins in this new virus are highly similar to those of SARS, Satchell said.

"The professional economist is the specialist who is instrumental in
designing various measures of government interference with business." right ... the amateur (NeverTrump) economist that cries "Free Trade will bring global Utopia" is also such a specialist, in his own mind. Our Government formed to create a more perfect union, to secure the blessings of liberty. Part of that has made government get involved in the globalist trade regime, since we protect workers from slavery and limit pollution to protect the citizenry, and that cost gets passed on, as does the (essential to liberty) cost of our military, other services. Globalists escape the cost of securing those blessings, by using slaves and polluting in China, which cares not a wit about human rights or the sovereign rights of a more perfect union. Government does have a big role in our economy and many public efforts toward a functional society. But we must elect public servants that respect the constitution, not a commie mafia intent on totalitarian centralized control. Posted by: illiniwek at January 25, 2020 03:08 PM (Cus5s) 680

Trump's defense team was great today and the Democrats--despite trying to talk tough and begging for more witnesses-are nervous.
But they'll have one more round of Sunday shows to shit all over today's presentation and fantasize that Bolton is going to come to their rescue before they get their clock cleaned once and for all next week. Posted by: JoeF. at January 25, 2020 04:22 PM (CqE5x) 735

A Washington times article that has been memory holed the last few hours said considering it's flu season:
Basically they are saying its weird to have found this to be a novel virus so fast. Its so uncommon, how could they have done this? Its an oddity And yet scientists are saying it's already been cataloged and logged as shown above. Can't have it both ways. Oh and the level 4 bioweapon research and development lab was 8.6 miles down the street from the open wet seafood and animal market, where it was found. I'm not trying to win an argument. Dismissing the facts that the ChiComs have developed this in a lab, level 4 bio security and decontamination isn't up to par in China, and the Chinese Government was so quick to identify the virus which was novel and unknown yet cataloged and logged so people could study it. Cataloged and logged meaning it was man made in 2018-2019. My eyes are dead from phonefagging 30 hours straight digging and reading. Enjoy your weekend. Posted by: not so at January 25, 2020 04:25 PM (HALdu) Literally logged and cataloged so people could figure out what it was by outsiders, yet novel and rare the Chinese caught and indemnified it so quickly in flu season. Crazy. It's not like they devolved a strain for human to human in 2018 that was published. Pure Chinese luck I guess Posted by: squirrelly dan at January 25, 2020 04:41 PM (+Smjf) Posted by: not so at January 25, 2020 04:42 PM (HALdu) 748
My concern level regarding the Kung FU Flu will register when it becomes apparent that the rest of the world is taking serious steps to completely isolate China. When they restrict travel in the US is when I will grab the babies and the old ladies and close the gate. God is sovereign and that will always temper my reaction. Healthy, skeptical concern is good but worrying about things outside of the scope of your ability to control is unprofitable.

Like the one that was 8.6 miles down.the street from the only level 4 bioweapons research and development in the country. The one that created something very similar literally in 2018 and published it, Human to human, and that makes it a weapon. Posted by: squirrelly dan at January 25, 2020 04:45 PM (+Smjf) 750

Where did I even suggest that? Posted by: not so at January 25, 2020 04:40 PM (HALdu) I assumed that your agreement with SD implied it. If not then we have no argument. He appears to have implied it again in his sign-off post 743:"Dismissing the facts that the ChiComs have developed this in a lab"I dispute that this is a "fact". A ChiCom lab uploaded a sequence in 2018 marked as being from a bat. That does not mean "developed".In 735 he asserts various % similarity and"uses the same cell entry receptor, ACE2, as SARS"Well, doh. That's why it infects humans. But none of this proves that it wasn't a mutation in the wild --- as most experts seem to believe at the moment. Posted by: Enquiring Minds Want to Know at January 25, 2020 04:50 PM (gDKGD) 753
