"At times it felt like we would never cross the Brexit finish line, but we’ve done it," Prime Minister Johnson declared following the vote. The EU is preparing for vengeance: While the EU has agreed to Britain leaving the bloc, news reports suggest that Brussels intends to punish its leading trading partner and Europe's second-largest economy. “EU preparing to give UK worse trade deal terms than Canada or Japan,” The Telegraph reported on Monday. Brussels is planning to hit Britain where it hurts the most. The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, has drawn up a hit list to target the British financial sector for defying the EU to dictate regulations following the Brexit. When it comes to trade it is hard to punish the UK without also damaging the EU. Also you significantly lesson the likelihood they will ever return. And no doubt the U.S. will que up a very favorable trade treaty with the UK ASAP. The only point to punishing the UK is to keep any other EU member from leaving, but that high handed bullshit is exactly what will cause them to leave. Britain is already projected to outpace the EU, economically.
https://www.thetimes.co.uk/ article/d37b4c70-3bbd-11ea-9bc3-b4804128329e Britain's economy will grow faster than those of other major European countries this year as chief executives regard it as an increasingly attractive place to invest, two studies have found. Amid growing optimism over Britain's economic outlook, the International Monetary Fund said that it would outperform the eurozone this year and next. Assuming there is an orderly Brexit at the end of the month, and a gradual transition to a new relationship with the bloc, growth would accelerate from 1.3 per cent last year to 1.4 per cent this year and 1.5 per cent in 2021, it said. It would be hilarious if Britain and the US saw growth, and the EU saw a recession. Posted by: Colorado Alex In Exile at January 23, 2020 03:26 PM (wCmLp) 68

The EU bureaucracy and the governments of the member countries care about money and privilege. There's much money to be made by trading with the UK. If the British govt take an uncompromising hard line, and the US backs them up, the EU will quietly surrender after a decent interval. For the money. The EU countries are eager to do business with with Iran, North Korea, and Russia. They have no principles, other than money and privilege. It was a group trip led by a German who was a professor here in the states. We spent some time in his home town. He hadn't been back in about a decade and it was interesting to see him confused by the changes. The little downtown looked like a lot of small town American downtowns with things closed all over the place. But, he seemed oblivious that a lot of the things he espoused led to the exact things he missed. Even heard one German talk about some guy he knew shipping his factory to China. Germany is busy making the same mistakes we made. Posted by: Today's Zeitgeist at January 23, 2020 03:44 PM (UkvxG) 217

Everyone in charge was looking to create the EU to
prevent another conflict like that and to show those lousy Americans how Europe can act forcefully in the world without force. Posted by: WOPR at January 23, 2020 03:34 PM (UkvxG) +++++++++++++++ In part. They can act forcefully in the world with US force. But the key point - cooperation instead of continuous, world-ending bloodshed - was the root of it. The problem, though, is they threw the baby (nation-state government, preferably democratic) out with the bathwater (continuous continental war). The idea of having treaties and trade and generally good behavior and maybe easy (though not free) movement of people and capital morphed into a monster. It became monstrous when they formed the customs union. Then they threw their weight around the continent: join or no access to markets - that is, join or starve (except you, Switzerland. You're cool.). Out of the "no more continental conflict" goal came a communist superstate with no accountability and no checks on their power. Out of that goal came the appalling "community method" of legislature. The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, has drawn up a hit list to target the British financial sector for defying the EU to dictate regulations following the Brexit.
At one point, the Brits were pretty good at spy work. I would expect the UK to consider the above an economic warfare threat. Economic warfare can and should be answered with warlike actions, including breaking out the old spy playbook and taking action against EU leaders, EC leaders, and whomever else they deem legitimate targets. Actually it is worse for Greece. They cannot devalue their currency to match the output of their failing economy. They got socked with Austerity about six years ago, and that put many out of work and desperate.
Best think for them is to go back to their own currency. Posted by: rd at January 23, 2020 03:45 PM (+0uDE) ++++++++++++++++ Which will also cause the government to fail. Greece is no-win. The Justice Department has concluded that the evidence underlying multiple warrants authorizing the surveillance of former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page failed to show Page was a foreign agent, as the law requires.
The department delivered its conclusion in a December letter to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC), the secretive federal body that approved the department's four surveillance applications of the Trump aide. A Justice Department assessment found that in at least two applications "there was insufficient predication to establish probable cause to believe that Page was acting as an agent of a foreign power," states a court document quoting the department's review. Best thing Jim Lehrer ever wrote was the 1969 movie "Viva Max!" - really funny if you're from Texas, since the entire movie is full of Texas in-jokes. Hardly ever shown lately, which is too bad. Peter Ustinov is a Mexican General who decides to recapture the Alamo because his girlfriend told him his men wouldn't follow him into a whorehouse. John Astin, Jonathan Winters, Kenneth Mars, all have memorable parts.

Former New York Times correspondent Chris Hedges criticized Democrats on Thursday over their handling of President Trump's impeachment.
Hedges took issue with what he described as Democrats' "selective use" of constitutional violations that he argued were normalized under the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations. He pointed to Bush declaring war on Iraq without congressional approval and Obama's reinterpretation of the Authorization for Use of Military Force that was first passed in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. "The constitutional violations that they've charged Trump with in comparison are probably the most trivial because of course Trump has also continued those violations," Hedges, who is now an author, said. "There's a long litany of violations that have empowered the imperial presidency that the Democrats don't want to touch and that really worries me," he added. Hedges went on to dismiss Trump's trial in the Senate as a "political farce," arguing that it "shows utter contempt for the rule of law." Posted by: SMOD at January 23, 2020 04:03 PM (3aI0K) 363

It's barely even being reported on as news in Britain. For the past three years, every idiiotic and trivial protest, vote or parliamentary maneuver that gave the Remainers even the slightest bit of hope was given the STOP THE PRESSES treatment. But now fianlly that some actual moment of substance has occurred -- the crushing and final irrevocable destruction of the Remain movement and the ultimate triumph of Brexit -- it's barely even being mentioned in the British press (at least the online versions). Posted by: WisRich at January 23, 2020 03:49 PM (G0vdT) __________________________ It took a while to get the right team together, but Lighthizer, Ross, Navarro, Scalia, etc are firing on all cylinders. But, I think the amazing thing to watch is how they leverage certain deals to secure better deals down the road. Anyone who doesn't think China didn't have pressure to work something out once we did a primary deal with Japan is smoking something. It made it necessary to tie down loose ends in the Eastern Rim. That was all preceded by pulling out of the previous Pacific Rim deal. Now we are doing individual deals with that membership. The big thing is, however, North Korea. China will need to fill the trade void and North Korea is an untapped potential market. When all the dust settles, I wouldn't be surprised to see N. Korea enter the 21st Century and become an eventual mass market for Chinese goods. Posted by: Orson at January 23, 2020 04:09 PM (M5KSL) 412

There is no way they won't fold when they need to deal with the second largest economy in Europe. Especially when they all have to present a EU-nified front in negotiations. Back when I had a regular well pump, we had a 50 gallon pressure tank. The well would turn on with a "thump" and shut off just as hard.
This new Grundfos system uses a variable speed pump to spin just as fast as it needs to keep the pressure at whatever is set on the control unit. As it reaches pressure, the motor slows down and eventually stops when not needed. Posted by: jwest at January 23, 2020 04:24 PM (U6f/q) 476
