Sundown Joe: The Economy Is Terrible, It Just Consists of "People Clipping Coupons In the Street." Or, Alternatively: "People Clipping Coupons In the Stock Market" (???!!!?

Does he mean... redeeming coupons attached to bearer bonds?

Does he think this is Die Hard? Or Mission: Impossible?

And what does he mean about people clipping coupons in the street?

Who clips coupons in the street?

What is he talking about?

Does he mean anything?

Or is he just sundowning as usual?

"No Marlarkey" Joe is peddling some serious malarkey.

The economy isn't merely good -- it's at a level which one would not be guilty of Trumpian overstatement to call an all-time high.

There is one chart that President Donald Trump's re-election campaign should be "plastering absolutely everywhere," said Fox Business host Deirdre Bolton on Fox Nation's "Deep Dive" on Thursday.

The graph shows the average unemployment rate in the first 35 months of each president's first term going back five decades.

The average unemployment rate nearly three years into President Trump's administration is 3.9 percent -- a 50-year low. The next best employment statistic was recorded during President George W. Bush's first term at 5.5 percent.

That statistic coupled with the fact that the wages of American workers are rising for the first time in years presents a challenge for Democrats in the 2020 election, according to the "Deep Dive" panel.

"Workers' wages have lately been rising faster than the salaries of their bosses. It pretty much knocks out the inequality argument. ... It appears the Trump era has been reducing [income inequality]," said James Freeman, the assistant editor of The Wall Street Journal's editorial page.

So fucking stupid Schiff is saying that because he's not allowing the Dems to have input in *varying* from the Clinton process where they want to--it's NOT following the process of the Clinton trial.

That's fucking stupid. He's said other annoying things in his statement. But that's just fucking stupid.

No, the Fed just had to create 500 Billion out of thin air, which they then loan to banks, which then gets repaid with dollars that have been in circulation for awhile.

You know, kind of like a counterfeiter would do?

So yeah, the Fed just made 500 Billion for its stockholders, the banks, which are then owned by private individuals.

That's slow Joe trying to use some Wall Street/bankster lingo. "Coupon" and the clipping thereof refers to interest payments on bonds.

In the old days, bonds were printed. Interest would be paid periodically on said bond, and that was redeemed in the form of literal coupons printed below the main part of the bond.

The coupons were torn or clipped at perforation marks.

One would take the coupon to the bank or other agent, and get one's interest payment.

101 I love watching Democrats complain about the capital gains rate...that Obama/Biden renewed into law.

You're not going to get the investment every good economy needs by taxing capital gains at or near income rates.

And free markets without investment is a bad economy. The Jacobins are ossifying for a country that still yet prefers prosperity over academic "fairness" theories.

106 "coupon clipping" was an expression for stolid dividend-oriented investors who just collected income from large established company stocks (which used to always pay dividends).

Dividend vs. price appreciation in the stock.

I assume this is whatever part of whatever's left of Biden's brain thought it was talking about.

"on the street" = Wall Street, i.e. in the market

None of which comes to the rescue here. Income-oriented investing is nothing controversial, and has no relation to the booming economy, which is booming by any standard.

The term coupon is still used to refer to interest on bonds. The "coupon rate" is the interest rate applied to the face value of the bond. The coupon payment is this rate times the face value of the bond which is paid at periodic intervals (every 6 months, or every year)

This is not the same as the yield. That involves a little fancy math.

Then there are zero-coupon bonds. They pay no coupon, but the face value is redeemed after the term expires. T-bills are examples of zero coupon. Notes and long bonds have coupons, paid every 6 months.

"Clipping coupons" means collecting the interest payments on bond investments.

Some bonds are "zero coupon"

Some people will grudgingly admit that, but then counter that Ryan should have been able to counter all that.

HOW?

What are you supposed to do? Point out all the lies, with Biden acting a fool the whole time? Biden would just reiterate the lie and move on. In the meanwhile you're not stating your talking points.

If your debate opponent isn't constrained by silly little things like truth-telling, and the media doesn't call them out on the lies, you're simply not going to win.

They also were hoping to bait Trump to say something stupid with all the pomp for McCains funeral.

He also is clearly now having additional, almost certainly senility-related problems with focus, coherence, memory, the basics.

If I find you been sniffing 'round our daughters' hair

He's been babbling like a fool beside the town's pool
And he don't always say things that sound so cool

Sometimes I think he's insane
When he switches gears to talk about Corn Pop again
Sometimes I think he's insane
When he switches gears to talk about Corn Pop again

I can picture every move that that man has made
Getting lost in their tresses is his first mistake

Sundown, you better take care
If I find you been sniffing 'round our daughters' hair
Sometimes I think he's done in
When Kamela and Bernie smack him 'round again

I can see him eating paste in his big ol' bib
He's an addle-pated liar, spewing nothing but fibs

Sometimes I think he's insane
When he switches gears to talk about Corn Pop again

Why waste any of them when you have an open Republican field in '24 to have them run against. The Dems out there right now are just laying the groundwork for a future run. It's probably safe to agree there likely won't be defections to support removal. My primary concern is there could be some who go along with witnesses for the defense who then squeal about Joe Biden being called. If there are witnesses and they don't include the purported victim/plaintiff, it will drive the final nail in American justice.

I have from a very good source, as in first hand, that they tried out bombs in Vietnam that were filled with dime washers. You let those things go at the right speed and you don't really need an explosive.

In fact, in the Civil War, artillery was way less effective than it could have been because it relied on an explosive charge to occur at the right second.

"Key" is standard Brit pronunciation for "Quay". Also used in Australia, too. But "dock" and "wharf" are more commonly used than "quay".

I blow Miley's mind with some Southernisms upon occasion. I was fixin' to do something, and I saw she had already finished it, and I said, "Well, you done done it, then."

That blew her mind. I got curious and that form of "done", meaning essentially "already" is peculiar to the Southeast.

There are shades of it with different meanings, such as, "You done done it now!" or "You done gone and done it now, boy!"

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at January 22, 2020 09:48 PM (f1Vqw)

810 Warfare from the civil war to WWI is downright scary
when you think about it though. As Shelby Foote put it: 'The equipment
was way ahead of the tactics.' That is a period when I would NOT want to
be a line soldier, because your chances, they were not good. And that
is not even counting disease.

Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at January 22, 2020 09:26 PM (2B9A/)

That is a subject dear to my heart. It is a terrible subject but I find in endlessly interesting. For sure the disease part can not be contradicted. So many died of disease and that was a true waste of life.

The tactics vs technology discussion is ever interesting. The old school line was that Civil War Generals learned only of Napoleonic tactics and did not understand the changes brought on by the rifle-musket. I am not saying you are saying that, but that has been the general opinion for 150 years.

This subject has always interested me though there has been little real academic research on the subject. A book I have read from time to time came out a few years ago called Civil War Infantry Tactics by Earl Hess.

The long and short is that the leaders at that time made the best with what they had. They knew the power of the rifle-musket and also its limitations. They did make changes to the order of battle. For example, they spread out picketss and vendettes. They spread out attacking lines when they could and they also spead up the marching rate/cadence. The key point is these people did realize there were fundamental changes to warfare, and they did not blindly follow traditions based on another time.

That takes nothing away from the slaughter, waste and disease. But It does show these people tried their best to deal with a catastrophic situation. And we are not right to just assume they could have used fire and maneuver. In fact, that would not have been possible. But I would be glad to discuss this further. This subject would be a good thread really.
