There is one chart that President Donald Trump's re-election campaign should be "plastering absolutely everywhere," said Fox Business host Deirdre Bolton on Fox Nation's "Deep Dive" on Thursday. The graph shows the average unemployment rate in the first 35 months of each president's first term going back five decades. The average unemployment rate nearly three years into President Trump's administration is 3.9 percent -- a 50-year low. The next best employment statistic was recorded during President George W. Bush's first term at 5.5 percent. That statistic coupled with the fact that the wages of American workers are rising for the first time in years presents a challenge for Democrats in the 2020 election, according to the "Deep Dive" panel. "Workers' wages have lately been rising faster than the salaries of their bosses. It pretty much knocks out the inequality argument. ... It appears the Trump era has been reducing [income inequality]," said James Freeman, the assistant editor of The Wall Street Journal's editorial page.Meanwhile: Big dog gives a boost to a tiny little kitten.

40 minutes into the speech he says one of the fucking stupidest things I can imagine that he would say. He said that the Senate is not following the process of the Clinton trial, because in the trial, that process was arrived at that through bipartisan agreement. So fucking stupid Schiff is saying that because he's not allowing the Dems to have input in *varying* from the Clinton process where they want to--it's NOT following the process of the Clinton trial. That's fucking stupid. He's said other annoying things in his statement. But that's just fucking stupid. Posted by: Axeman at January 22, 2020 07:43 PM (ppLlx) 32

That's slow Joe trying to use some Wall Street/bankster lingo. "Coupon" and the clipping thereof refers to interest payments on bonds. In the old days, bonds were printed. Interest would be paid periodically on said bond, and that was redeemed in the form of literal coupons printed below the main part of the bond. The coupons were torn or clipped at perforation marks. One would take the coupon to the bank or other agent, and get one's interest payment. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at January 22, 2020 07:48 PM (rCwaK) 73

"coupon clipping" was an expression for stolid dividend-oriented investors who just collected income from large established company stocks (which used to always pay dividends).
Dividend vs. price appreciation in the stock. I assume this is whatever part of whatever's left of Biden's brain thought it was talking about. "on the street" = Wall Street, i.e. in the market None of which comes to the rescue here. Income-oriented investing is nothing controversial, and has no relation to the booming economy, which is booming by any standard. The term coupon is still used to refer to interest on bonds. The "coupon rate" is the interest rate applied to the face value of the bond. The coupon payment is this rate times the face value of the bond which is paid at periodic intervals (every 6 months, or every year) This is not the same as the yield. That involves a little fancy math. Then there are zero-coupon bonds. They pay no coupon, but the face value is redeemed after the term expires. T-bills are examples of zero coupon. Notes and long bonds have coupons, paid every 6 months. "Clipping coupons" means collecting the interest payments on bond investments. Some bonds are "zero coupon" Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at January 22, 2020 07:53 PM (rCwaK) 109

Thank you! Even people on the right say Biden won that one. I feel like I'm in a Twilight Zone on this topic. All Biden did was giggle, flash his chompers, pull incredulous faces, and lie his saggy ass off. Some people will grudgingly admit that, but then counter that Ryan should have been able to counter all that. HOW? What are you supposed to do? Point out all the lies, with Biden acting a fool the whole time? Biden would just reiterate the lie and move on. In the meanwhile you're not stating your talking points. Generally "coupon clipping" used to be a sort of weak slur, implying that the investment wasn't contributing much to the economy, but just harvesting cash out of it. Posted by: rhomboid at January 22, 2020 07:57 PM (El6T/) 136

It's probably safe to agree there likely won't be defections to support removal. My primary concern is there could be some who go along with witnesses for the defense who then squeal about Joe Biden being called. Biden is showing his age & sounding out of touch again, that's all. Instead of "coupon clippers" (antique; quaint; most folks won't get it), he should talk about "the people with private jets," or something like that. Posted by: mnw at January 22, 2020 08:48 PM (Cssks) 478

The thing that scares me the most is that no matter what brain dead candidate runs against Trump. It will be a narrow margin of voters. In 1980 voters absolutely rejected Carter and 1984 was a complete rejection of Mondale. But when this is all said and done, on paper it will be a way closer election than it should be.

Warfare from the civil war to WWI is downright scary
when you think about it though. As Shelby Foote put it: 'The equipment was way ahead of the tactics.' That is a period when I would NOT want to be a line soldier, because your chances, they were not good. And that is not even counting disease. Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at January 22, 2020 09:26 PM (2B9A/) That is a subject dear to my heart. It is a terrible subject but I find in endlessly interesting. For sure the disease part can not be contradicted. So many died of disease and that was a true waste of life. The tactics vs technology discussion is ever interesting. The old school line was that Civil War Generals learned only of Napoleonic tactics and did not understand the changes brought on by the rifle-musket. I am not saying you are saying that, but that has been the general opinion for 150 years. This subject has always interested me though there has been little real academic research on the subject. A book I have read from time to time came out a few years ago called Civil War Infantry Tactics by Earl Hess. The long and short is that the leaders at that time made the best with what they had. They knew the power of the rifle-musket and also its limitations. They did make changes to the order of battle. For example, they spread out picketss and vendettes. They spread out attacking lines when they could and they also spead up the marching rate/cadence. The key point is these people did realize there were fundamental changes to warfare, and they did not blindly follow traditions based on another time. That takes nothing away from the slaughter, waste and disease. But It does show these people tried their best to deal with a catastrophic situation. And we are not right to just assume they could have used fire and maneuver. In fact, that would not have been possible. But I would be glad to discuss this further. This subject would be a good thread really. Posted by: Quint at January 22, 2020 09:49 PM (n13/j) 811
