The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg

"Nancy Pelosi has been making the rounds proclaiming that Trump is 'impeached forever' and his presidency is 'forever stained'.

"Progressives on social media have been taking these victory laps, too.

"These are the people who were thrilled when they got a participation trophy in school.

"Pelosi is walking around wearing the impeachment skin and demanding respect, but really isn't getting any. Respect, I mean.

"She knows full well that the impeachment is going to go nowhere in the Senate, so she's declaring a moral victory.

"So a bunch of Democrats all got together and agreed that Trump is icky. And that's about it. It's like those nude protests against the Iraq War, or even better, this Saturday's women's march.

"You *did* know that there was a women's march on Saturday, right?

"OK, so there was a women's march this Saturday in Washington DC where a bunch of silly women got together shrieking about how they all thought that Trump is icky, and waving silly signs. And I think a bunch of other left-wing protestors showed up, too. Because that's usually what happens. Most left-wing protests have a problem with focus.

"But I digress. What, exactly, did waving silly signs and shrieking about Trump being icky accomplish? Pretty much zero. You know, like the impeachment."

Friday's Celebs: Jennifer Jones, who bears enough resemblance to an actress whose name rhymes with Boan Mollins that I felt I had to issue a warning, and Joseph Cotten, with whom she made a number of movies together, such as The Wild Heart, Portrait of Jenny, Love Letters, and Since You Were Away. But I think their most famous movie together was Duel in the Sun (1946).

==========

They still need to pay attention to shadows in color pictures, it's just less noticeable because the contrast between the lights and darks tends to be lesser in color films.

You can easily tell when films aren't paying attention to shadows because they end up flat looking. Either everything looks lit the same or everything's dark.

And we don't remember all the shitty movies that studios were pushing out in the 30s and 40s. We just remember the ones that have stood the test of time.

I would wager that they produced as much garbage then as they do today.

There's a funny article at npr that boils down to the women's march participants saying "Our appeal has become more selective!"
Npr quotes participants who announce they are women of color, and then attempts to imply that the leadership change that happened last year has shifted the organization's focus from "white feminist" issues to "more inclusive" non-white issues - climate change, reproductive rights and immigration. What a mess of contradictions and historical revisionism.

LOL.

93 Concerning Nancy and the "impeached forever" remark...

Nothing is written in stone. A new, republican led house along with a republican Senate could pass a bill that, in effect, would negate the original impeachment vote because it was not constitutionally based.

Of course, liberal heads would explode, but who the fuck cares?

It's important that people on our side realize that when you write the rules, there are no rules. When you hold the gavel, you can do anything you want.

And, that's supposed to let us know just how serious they are, that this is a serious subject about women's rights in society, and so forth. OK, let's turn this around, so to speak.

A group of men have a protest march. They want everyone to treat them seriously, because they are serious about a very important topic. So important, that they wear baseball hats with a stuffed sock and two tennis balls sewn to the top.

Oh, yes, everyone will definitely take these men seriously. And be impressed. And want to embrace whatever their political beliefs are. Yeah.. sure...

It fits their tweet. They think prohibition was great because it was when the FBI gained its power and influence, by going after mobsters of all sorts. This was the genesis of their power in America, because people were desperate to stop the crime and violence and gave them more and more powers, passed more and more federal laws.

Man, looking at those protester signs really brings home the point about just how "performative" being left wing really is.

Every single one of those protester signs is just a prop for playing
acting the fantasy role of, "The Rebel who is definitely not a boring,
run-o-the-mill middle-class type who is finally going shock all those
knuckledraggin' rubes back in in my hometown that didn't realize I was
the absolute tits back in high school into once and for all accepting
that the politics I picked up first semester at college are the final
stage of history."

The Oppression Olympics is a different situation but when your identity and source of importance is being a feminist activist, it's a little hard not to make yourself the center of all attention.

185 Regardless of what people think, the 30s were the golden age of studio movies. There were probably more classic movies made during that decade than any other.
Posted by: Vic at January 20, 2020 11:30 AM (mpXpK)

I just finished reading "The Last Tycoon," and although the book seems, I don't know, rather incomplete somehow, it would seem Fitzgerald presents a view of Hollowwood that was much more "top down" when it came to decisions as to what got made and what did not.

So you had people like Thalberg (represented by Stahr in the book), who seemed to have a genius for what worked on film, and what did not. And Fitzgerald presents the directors as not much more than technicians.

All that was to change, of course, in not too far into the future from the timeline of that book. Eventually directors reclaimed creative control, and when they did, I think it would be accurate to say the great ones made great movies, while the hacks worked for the studios, in the same old way.

Anyhoo, yeah, I don't agree with any assessment that they were making as much junk then as they are now.

I find it odd that a blue-check master is going here. They haven't conquered mainstream polygamy or de-tabooed sex with children yet. This freak's jumping the gun.

allowed.

Evolution or God turned us (absent unfortunate accidents) into one thing or the other, and you don't get to choose. If dude wants to lay with dude, or chick wants to lay with chick, fine, but don't pretend that makes you a girl or a boy.

And especially not the surgery part. You want to do that, you want to PAY for it, you want to live with the consequences, fine, but don't EVER expect me to accept you for what you are not.

Any man who has been in an intimate RELATIONSHIP with woman, knows she has periods and/or she occasionally has sounds coming "from there."

And it doesn't gross us out.

You know who might be grossed out by it? A guy who you're only sleeping with, but have no other form of intimacy. So you hide your natural body functions from him. And you think WE are going to be offended by YOU mentioning you have them.

303 The synching periods thing is... scientifically dubious, but even if it worked, the reason men joke about it is because women become excessively irrational and hostile then, not because we're scared of you. Its an annoyance and hindrance, not a terror. The reason we back away and avoid upsetting you then is because we love you. If you're just some obnoxious bint we don't know, we just treat you like we would any other irrational annoying person. Men treat you carefully then not out of fear, but out of respect, sympathy, and love.

Comedy movies aside, being on your period doesn't give you superpowers, ladies. You're still well out of your weight class.

328 I'm sorry, but for me Virginia got enrolled on the same list as Albania when they enacted the radar detector ban. Back when Albania was still Hoxha.

What's worse is that the Feds let them get away with it. What's worst is that the Feds then stuffed that onto commercial drivers too.

We had a state Assemblyman who kept the CHP from getting radar for damn near two decades. I accord him a saint, even though his reasons were somewhat personal - he was zipping up and down from his sick wife to Sacramento pretty much nightly.

When he quit government suddenly chippies got everything.

It's possible, but not necessarily more likely than it being introduced into humans by eating infected animals. Or a human virus that simply mutated over time.

I haven't been looking in a while, but last I heard the reality is that HIV has been around for several decades, at least, and probably around for much much longer. Just not as "well-traveled" until the 20th century created opportunity for it to leave its relatively narrow place in a world where dying from one horrible disease or another was fairly commonplace.

This was always my understanding.

Example: You're waiting a stop light, in the turn lane. The car in front of you and the car next to him both have their signals on. Sometimes, those lights blink at the same time. Sometimes, those lights are perfects opposed. Often, there's some overlap. Over the course of the light, the small timing differences will cause all three conditions for many cars.

Same phenomenon, per my understanding.

The old saying goes, you put enough fresh blood in any scenario, with enough access to susceptible tissue, and you could be infected with HIV.

No matter how unlikely.

So yeah, no matter how you slice it, the unlikely happened somehow. Either an animal virus mutated and became a human virus, or an already existing human virus mutated.

Have humans had sex with animals? Sure.

But humans also hunt and eat animals, so the means of contact with substantial amounts of animal blood could have been any of those scenarios.

Their are people getting rich and powerful off of these causes, and so nothing will ever be enough.

Same thing happened with Martin Luther King and the Black movement. It pretty much WON, but has now morphed into something else, so it can continue.

Same with Gays and Gay marriage. They won, but now its transgenders and soon bestiality.

The Woman's movement is now having to create a new enemy to fight.

Their commanding heights intellectual leadership were communists going back *at least* to the initial agitation around the NOW and that organization's formation. Many people who supported them wanted to solve some actual problems but the leadership who herded those efforts always had the destruction of the west as their goal - from the destruction of the family to the destruction of taboo to outright Maoism. Not every person who followed them believed this - indeed, many did not and many dropped out as they either learned its underpinnings or saw some practical progress being made - but their intellectual front lines have always been this way.

And the increasing triviality of their objections was inevitable. It is a similar problem that many labor unions face. If you solve the basic problems (you have fair pay, you have a weekend, you have a safe working environment, you have overtime compensation, etc.), what's left? You can't close up shop because there's money and power involved, but there is nothing big left to fix - so trivialities get amplified.

Posted by: JackStraw at January 20, 2020 12:12 PM (ZLI7S)

True, but Democrats are full of spectacularly bad ideas. I can attest to that being here in California.

A couple considerations. First, I suspect Pelosi was getting a lot of pressure from the hard left to impeach, pressure to which she succumbed before a lot of the Biden corruption story came out. So it's possible that the impeachment saga was intended at the time to mollify the hard left and to torpedo Sanders and Warren in favor of the DNC's favored candidate.

Now she's got the articles of impeachment, what to do with them? She can't just sit on them indefinitely without facing a lot of awkward questions.

I have no idea, I'm just throwing out another possible scenario. The whole idea has blown up spectacularly in the Dems' faces, so it's difficult to assess just how delusional they were when they decided to do this.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at January 20, 2020 12:21 PM (le94c)

The way I see it, there were women who saw themselves at the bottom of a tall hill, and they figured it was going to take a massive effort to get up the hill. So they started the car, and floored it, chewing up gravel and stalling, and fishtailing and otherwise revving the engine as hard as they could... to achieve some amount of progress.

Right or wrong, they weren't worried about hurting anyone's feelings as they went.

So, fast-forward to the 21st century, and almost all the gains women sought in the early days of the movement, they got 'em!

And the Republicans *desperately* need to learn that "fairness" is a profoundly stupid idea when both sides are not playing fair. If you're in a chess game and both sides agree to the rules, you shouldn't violate them - it would be unfair and you will be excoriated for doing so and your victory will be nullified.

If one side has no rules, your side following the old rules is just a recipe for defeat.

The Dems destroyed the rules. They're dead. Forget fairness and go for the kill.

470 Chris Rock had a bit on guys who attend women's marches - men go because the women are easy (known since they're marching for consequence-free sex) and they'll take care of any oopsies.

Does Chris Rock still have a career?

I don't think you can tell jokes like that anymore. You'd be cancelled. So maybe he's still out there, but if so I'm guessing he's much quieter about such things.

471 I don't think YOU'RE wrong, but I'm baffled as to why they are still solidly backing Biden. Yeah, I get that he's polling well--but that's purely name recognition.
Once people see him out on the trail, once they see him standing next to Trump.....c'mon. I don't see Biden getting anyone not already a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat, the kind who would vote for a '57 Chevy as long as it has a (D) by it's name....

Agreed, but that's true of ALL of their candidates. Betoff and Kalamari initially were touted as future superstars, and they're interviewing for reverse mortgage commercials now. Sanders is anathema to the DNC, I suspect, judging by the lengths they went to in 2016 to shiv him. Warren will clobber DNC fundraising on Wall Street.

The Democrat bench is hopeless. Yet another thing we can thank Barky for, in addition to leaving all those judicial appointments unfilled.

Nood but... almost all young guys going to protests are just there hoping to hook up with protest girls.

473 Their Voters are idiots. They don't have to learn them a new name if they back Joe.

Joe has the appearance - if you don't look too deep or seriously think about it - of being a normal big-government Democrat and not a radical communist.

I said "Not unless they're having extreme symptoms" or as Chris noted, "It's a matter of perspective"

I'm not a big fan of the stupid phrase from whatever that movie was about how to write female characters "I think of a man and take away all accountability or reason" because what it isn't helpful IMO to talk about women allies on the conservative side as being bat*** crazy and ready to bash their spouses head in with a hammer every thirty days, because I'm assuming the men here who speak fondly or fondly amusingly of their spouses are/were not really worried about being murdered by their wife or they would not still be married.

476 don't think McConnell will let them do it, because he's in charge and it's HIS reputation on the line. He's not going to let Pelosi and Schiff mess with His Senate.

and the claims of Parnas are already contradicting themselves and falling apart.

Mitch looks like a turtle and a dweeb, but he didn't get to where he is--and where he intends to stay--by acting like one....

477 Yeah, we all saw how being "forever impeached" completely wrecked Bill Clinton's career within the Democratic Party and throughout America.

478 When films were in black and white, directors had to pay attention to
shadows and lighting far beyond anything they deal with today.

Yea, like today's problems. "How do I use CGI to deify the laws of physics today?"

479 I have a friend who would love to be taken seriously, and would like to know where to obtain a hat like that.

Asking for a friend.

I can assure you that somewhere on the Internet there is a crochet pattern for the decoration you want.

May I suggest Red Lion acrylic yarn, which has no reason to exist other that to make hats like that?

481 Yah, sure, Trump is impeached forever.

And when he wakes up tomorrow, he will be President.

Pelosi will still be ugly.

485 Two pens were missing: "Trail of Tears" and "Japanese Internment".

BTW, interesting that you mention the film "Love Letters". The screenplay was by Ayn Rand, back when she was writing "women's pictures" for Hollywood. She should have stuck with what she did well.
