The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg

"I saw a meme floating around yesterday that claimed that the Democrats have tried to impeach every Republican president since Eisenhower.

"I thought, hmmmm, that's interesting, can that really be true? I decided to do a little digging.

"The site that was on the top of the list of Google results for this topic was snopes, which rated it "mostly false." So I rolled my eyes and clicked on the link, just to see how they'd spin it. The heading they gave it was 'Mostly False'. So I thought, ok, maybe it's just one of those urban legends that is factually deficient. But wait, here is the first thing they said about it:

What's True
Articles of impeachment were introduced against five of the six Republican presidents who have served since President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

"So why is this 'mostly false'? Apparently, the Democrats never got around to impeaching Ford, who only served for two years. Well then, it looks to me like the meme is 5/6th correct. Not so fast, says snopes. None of the attempts against any of the other Republicans ever had any significant support from either party. I don't understand why that argument invalidates the claim. I guess snopes is arguing like Whoopi Goldberg, i.e. the GOP presidents may have been impeached, but they weren't impeached-impeached.

"The facts stated in the snopes entry were essentially correct. But the snopes partisans twisted themselves into knots trying to minimize and explain away what the Democrats had done.

"Previously, I had accused the Democrats of turning the impeachment process into just another instrument in their political toolbox, just so they could get Trump. I thought that was a new #OrangeManBad thing. Apparently, I was mistaken. They've been doing this for awhile. Democratic bad faith on this is a lot older than I had realized.

Also, despite the outrageous spin, I actually learned something from the snopes entry. So visiting that site was not a complete waste of time."

48 Previously, I had accused the Democrats of turning the impeachment process into just another instrument in their political toolbox, just so they could get Trump. I thought that was a new #OrangeManBad thing. Apparently, I was mistaken. They've been doing this for awhile. Democratic bad faith on this is a lot older than I had realized.

They've never gone as far as they have this time, or behaved as crazily. But the hard Left has tried to impeach anyone who was even a nominal conservative. That they have been unsuccessful to date is due only to the fact that the hard Left represented an inadequate proportion of the party. Now that the hard Left controls the Party, they can successfully pursue this whenever they have an HoR majority.

Whenever there is a Dem HoR majority and Republican president, I suspect you can assume impeachment *will* occur. When there is a Dem HoR majority and a Dem president, you can probably assume that impeachment of other office holders will occur as applicable.

continued her philanthropic efforts on Tuesday at Downtown Eastside
Women's Centre, where she discussed "issues affecting women in the
community."
The community center, which provides support and basic necessities to
over 500 women and children every day, shared a sweet photo from
Meghan's visit on their Facebook page, explaining Meghan and the women
enjoyed tea together. . . .

First appearance at a battered women's shelter. Nice touch.

81 So why is this 'mostly false'? Apparently, the Democrats never got around to impeaching Ford, who only served for two years.
++++++++++
I suspect that Ford wasn't so much a duration thing so much as it was a "post-Nixon high" that they were all riding. They got rid of Nixon and were jubilant. Ford probably didn't even cross their minds, since they knew he was effectively a benchwarmer post-Nixon, wasn't elected in the first place, and they had already won.

Today, they'd impeach Ford right away, but only because the Party has become so badly broken to the Left.

Because its impossible to decide guilt, or innocence, when you don't even know what the charges mean.

Then, go after the Ex Post Facto nature of said charges. They were created out of nothing, AFTER the fact.

Because the idea that he would not let his people testify, is CONTEMPT of Congress, not Obstruction. They HAD something they could charge him with, a legal charge, yet made up something new.

And abuse of Power means you did something legal but we don't like WHY you did it, which is a thought crime.

Short answer based on >current< Senate Calvinball rules, is Yes. However, questions must be submitted in writing (during trial, I don't know about in any prelim Senate Cmte proceedings), and any Senator may object to the question, requiring an immediate, no-debate vote on allowing or dismissing the question; a simple majority rules.

Note: The Chief Justice gets to rule first on all such questions and everything else, but his rulings on anything can be challenged by any Senator and over-turned by a simple majority. The Senate didn't and won't give any real power to Roberts.

247 For those who still might think the Dems have a
Brilliant Legal Plan, I point to the big Environmental Lawsuit that the
New York State's Attorney General brought against Exxon, the one that
has now failed completely.

New York State spent years preparing this, sued for $1.6 Billion
dollars, tried to make Exxon settle, said that they would Destroy!
Exxon in court - and then they took it to court.

At the end of the trial, the Judge (and not a conservative judge,
either!) tossed the ENTIRE case out, because he ruled that, after all
these years of build up, the State had not been able to present ONE
SINGLE PIECE OF EVIDENCE that would back up any of their claims.

I expect the same thing to happen here.

Yet at the same time, I find major flaws with anything I've every done. I've gotten up at 2 AM to stare at a painting for 15 minutes, lay down a half inch brush stroke and then go back to bed.

304 194 Squirrely Dan,
I agree because a homogeneous society can use informal sanctions to keep misbehavior within boundaries because most everyone agrees to the ground rules for society. This knowledge means that formal laws are unnecessary as people agree on what is good, beautiful, etc. and what is bad. This in turn promotes high trust.

Diverse societies require formal laws and arbitration between groups as informal societal sanctions do not work when groups decide that these affect the group's interest negatively. Thus, formal rules are necessary.

Example is how school discipline has become formalized bureaucratic punishment now when in the 1950's and 1960's, it was decentralized to the classroom teacher and principal and informal parent/social sanctions at home.

How it works now: A person is investigated, leading to crimes. If severe or important enough, the person is prosecuted and punished.

It's an evil inversion. We investigate *crimes* in common law - crimes that are demonstrated to have occurred. Evidence leads to people.

But in Calvinball world, they invert it and go looking for evidence of crimes for people they don't like.

It's evil.

320 Example is how school discipline has become formalized bureaucratic
punishment now when in the 1950's and 1960's, it was decentralized to
the classroom teacher and principal and informal parent/social sanctions
at home.

And doesn't even get close to following any American legal principles. When a student gets physically attacked, the student who defends himself is also punished. The right to self-defense is not recognized by the school system for reasons that have not ever been 'splained.

Again, why are we tolerating this?

Can't say any of 'em are my type, but they look and dress a *lot* like girls at my university in the early '70s. Certainly better than in hoods and robes.

if I were the Dem side I would do whatever I could to introduce as much chaos into the exercise as possible

I kind of think they'll try

326 320, BackwardsBoy,

The innocent explanation is that in situations with low trust levels between groups, formal procedures must be instituted to protect each party's interest. Think divorce court and child custody cases here.

The not-so-innocent explanation is that the vibrancy establishment was deliberate so as to give the state and its agents greater power to adjudicate grievances caused by friction between societal groups.

When social sanctions fail, formal structures will be set up and social sanctions will fail in diverse low trust environments as no one agrees upon the game's rules. Thus, the state gains power while people lose liberty due to people preferring to rightfully avoid open conflict if possible.

I expect a few stalwart severe conservatives in the GOP wing of the Uni-Party will contribute to the Senatorial chaos as they demonstrate their principles!

329 BREAKING: #Expose2020 - PART II: Sanders 2020 Organizer "There Are Things That Are More Important Than the Rule of Law in the USA"; Declares His Views Are Shared by Many Others Within the Campaign; Secret Service Notified Over POTUS Assassination Concern

The Secret Service? The assholes who employ a guy who shot a dog and lied about it being off-leash? They would help any Bern Out who tried to kill Trump.

And that Bernie hasn't already been introduced to the business end of a Louisville Slugger shows you that this country is neither serious about the rule of law nor gives a shit whether it lives or dies.

332 I can't say that I remember this with perfect clarity, but I'm pretty sure there were Democrats who advocated for impeaching Ford when he pardoned Nixon. Basically, if one were to dig up such an article that would effectively identify Congressional Democrats who tried to impeach all six.
