Saturday Afternoon Chess Thread 01-11-2020

CM Lada Ilyina 01.jpg
CM Lada Ilyina (RUS)

(h/t David Llada)

Pic Note

Ms. Ilyina must be relatively new. I couldn't find any other pictures of her that were any good.

TheJamesMadison will be along later with the movie thread. As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Beginner Problem - White To Play (1089)

Goal: White can force mate in 3 moves
Hint: The h6 pawn is pinned

20200111 - Problem 1.jpg
r4r2/pp2R1pk/2b3np/2p2p2/7R/1BP2N2/PP4PP/6K1 w - - 0 1

Intermediate Problem - White To Play (1088 )

In thia position, there are a number of different ways to force checkmate. But I am looking for the FASTEST mate (i.e. in fewest moves), and once you think you've found it, see if you can discover any other lines equally fast.

Goal: Mate can be forced in 2 moves
Hint: This is a composition, not a position from an actual game. So every piece on the board has a purpose, and contributes to the solution.

20200111 - Problem 2.jpg
8/Q5K1/3pp3/3pk3/4rq2/2P5/2BP3B/8 w - - 0 1

Advanced Problem - Black To Play (1094)

White is threatening mayhem on the d and e files. Can Black avoid getting molly whopped, and if so, how?

20200111 - Problem 3.jpg

Problem Solutions

Beginner Problem - White To Play

20200111 - Problem 1.jpg
r4r2/pp2R1pk/2b3np/2p2p2/7R/1BP2N2/PP4PP/6K1 w - - 0 1

1. Ng5+ Kh8
2. Rxh6+ gxh6
3. Rh7# 1-0

Intermediate Problem - White To Play

20200111 - Problem 2.jpg
8/Q5K1/3pp3/3pk3/4rq2/2P5/2BP3B/8 w - - 0 1

Best answer is from the comments:

204 #2
1. Qe3 Qg3+
2. QG5#

Or
1 Qe3 Rxe3
2.d4#

Posted by: jsg at January 11, 2020 07:00 PM (ZmM/r)

So, with 1.Qe3 as your first move, it's a forced mate in 2.

Advanced Problem - Black To Play

20200111 - Problem 3.jpg
3r3k/p2QP2p/1p4p1/2p5/5P1q/2P4B/1P3P2/2K3R1 b - - 0 1

So Black uses checks to gain time to clean up the mess down on d7 and e7

1...Qxf4+ 2.Kb1

Not 2.Kd1? Rxd7+ 3. Kc2 Rxe7

2...Qe4+
3.Ka1 Rxd7
4.Bxd7 Qxe7
5.Ba4

And now the threats are gone. Black may still lose, but he is now in a better position to put up a fight.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

The damn things will also dig under your fence. We did not have coyote problems (thank God!) but our neighbors did. Two things will help: bring the sheep into shelter at night and, if you can, get a burro or donkey to put in with the sheep. Those burros/donkeys are great guardians of sheep.

Oh - the protests, like those stretching back months, denounce the regime chiefs by name as liars, thieves, and murderers, mock the idea that America is their enemy, and generally show "unity" in a way probably baffling to the NPR-level "minds" who might be paying attention.

Regency = the time with the Prince Regent when George III was incapable of ruling. Dresses of the Regency were following the French style; the fabric beneath the bust was more free-flowing. If you've ever watched or been forced to watch Jane Austen movies you've seen those dresses. In the pic above the fabric is cinched in.

Here's why Iran owned up to destroying the 737:

1. Iranians are natural born liars. They instinctual lie about everything. So they automatically denied responsibility for attacking the 737.

2. Even when the US, Ukraine, Canada, and everyone else gave Iran an OUT by saying it was "unintentional" and an "accident," Iran persisted in their lies, going as far as destroying, in plain view, evidence.

3. Democrats and Fake News finally had to broadcast a clear Narrative for Iran to pick up and use. Iran finally got the message and ran with it: Yes, it was an accident, but it would never have happened if not for Trump. It is, verbatim, the exact same Narrative the Democrats created shortly before and Fake News is repeating for them.

4. Their admission was also about the new Sanctions just put on Iran on Friday. The Democrats who are advising the Iranian Mullahs, such as John Kerry, told them to stop hiding the wreckage and hand over the Black Box because it's making you look bad and it makes it harder for us to help you make Trump look bad.

A mole, of course.

According to xkcd/what-if, where this question came up, that's enough moles to cover the earth to a depth of 50 miles. Or make a mole-ball about the size of the moon.

You don't want to be around when this ice age ends and the mole age begins. The 4 miles of ice on top of everything was bad enough.

292 I'll try this post my last to have disappeared.
The roads here in Northern Illinois are terrible. Went into work this morning when everything was covered in ice. As I got to the gate where the property I work at I tapped the breaks, leaving this street in going onto a driveway. Holy carp! I started going sideways and ran smack-dab into the wrought iron fence. I was able to drive off of it so actually I didn't so much run into the fence as run over it!

Just missed the telephone pole by 2 or 3 ft, that would have been much worse. Little damage to the front and a piece of plastic on the back is cracked but amazingly not too much damage and I wasn't hurt. If you have to have an accident I guess this was a good one.

355 For #2, black can also try d4. But it's still a mate next move. Rare to see a mate-in-2 problem in which the first move is not a check! Black has 5 possible moves, all of which have a mating response! Nice.

Posted by: bradc at January 12, 2020 12:38 AM (bej5Z)

356 I disagree with your comment on #3, where you say:
1...Qxf4+ 2.Kb1
Not 2.Kd1? Rxd7+ 3. Kc2 Rxe7

Uh, no. Kd1 is not a bad move. White knows he will lose his queen anyway. If black responds as you suggest (Rxd7+), then white replies Bxd7. Between that and a later Re1, white is putting pressure on the e8 threat. Black has many ways to win,
but don't sell white short; he wouldn't do anything as dumb as Kc2 (as you say).

357 Re: Problem 2 solutions

"204 #2
1. Qe3 Qg3+
2. QG5#

Or
1 Qe3 Rxe3
2.d4#"

I fail to see that either of these is checkmate.
After 1. Qe3 Qg3+ 2. Qg5+ Qxg5.
After 1. Qe3 Rxe3 2. d4+ Kf5.

Posted by: jdgalt at January 12, 2020 02:21 PM (3SFo/)

358 to bradc (#356), agree that Kd1 is not a (?) move - but it's not superior to Kc2 or Kb1, as it still leads to the same basic position after 2. ... Rxd7+, 3. Bxd7, whereupon black responds 3. ... Qd6+, 4. Kc2 (or Kc1) Qxe7, 5. Ba4
Note though that 4. Ke1? or Ke2? is an error because white loses the bishop as well after Qxe7+.

Posted by: civil truth at January 12, 2020 04:40 PM (ymrPC)

359 jdgalt (#357), put the pieces on a board and take another look. In the first case, black's queen is still pinned, in the second case, white's bishop now covers f5 and e4, so black can't move his king there.
