The Saturday Night Joke

Late fall and the Indians on a remote reservation in North Dakota asked their new chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild.

Since he was a chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky, he couldn’t tell what the winter was going to be like. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be prepared. But, being a practical leader, after several days, he got an idea.

He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, “Is the coming winter going to be cold?”

“It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold,” he was responded.

So the chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more firewood in order to be prepared.

A week later, he called the National Weather Service again, “Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?”

“Yes,” the man at National Weather Service again replied, “it’s going to be a very cold winter.”

The chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find.

Two weeks later, the chief called the National Weather Service again. “Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?”

“Absolutely,” the man replied. “It’s looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters we’ve ever seen.”

“How can you be so sure?” the chief asked.

The weatherman replied, “The Indians are collecting a shitload of firewood.”

MoMe's are awesome, amirite? This would be the MoMe of all Momes I think.

If you want a memorable and unique getaway, HomeAway have listed a castle that is hard to beat. For $475 per night, you can rent an entire castle in Tawstock, England.

Tawstock Castle was built in the 18th century, not medieval times. It was built by Sir Bourchier Wrey, Baronet, to take advantage of the spectacular views of the Taw Valley and Saunton Sands.

Medical Marijuana break through

In tests on mice, they found that a dose of THCP was as active as a larger dose of THC, leading to the claim of its elevated potency. But as pointed out by Vice, what this means in terms of the newly discovered cannabinoid’s psychotropic effects — if it even has any — isn’t entirely clear.

What is clear, though, is that the more scientists research cannabis, the more they’re discovering about the plant. That, in turn, is helping them suss out new therapeutic uses for marijuana — and now that the scientific community knows about the existence of THCP and CBDP, it can start to look for ways to take advantage of them as well.

This is hard to believe. Tesla the most valuable auto maker ever in U.S. history.

Elon Musk-led electric car company Tesla has had an incredible start to the decade.

Shares surged at the beginning of 2020, making it the most valuable U.S. automaker of all time with a market capitalization of $81.39 billion, passing Ford Motor’s 1999 record of $80.81 billion, The Wall Street Journal reports.

And Tesla shares are still on the rise. Stocks rose to $469.06 on Tuesday, representing a boost of 3.9 percent so far this year.

Science and beer. What's new? About that can of beer you dropped........

Anyone who has fallen victim to the old "opening a shaken beer can" prank has likely heard that tapping the side of the can before opening it can keep the beer inside from fizzing over. It's a fun bit of folk wisdom, but apparently the science doesn't bear it out. Danish scientists from the University of Southern Denmark (USD) in Odense put the tapping strategy to the test and found that it really doesn't work. They summarized their findings in a recent paper posted to the physics arXiv.

Smart Military Blog material. The Man Can.

Its formal name was the “man-carried auto-navigation device,” but it went by the nickname “Man Can.” The Martin-Marietta Corporation received patent no. 3,355,942 for it in 1967.

It was a device designed to help soldiers avoid getting lost. The patent offered this description:

a lightweight, completely mechanical, low energy device by which small units of men may locate themselves accurately with respect to some reference point when operating in the jungle, darkness or bad weather without dependence upon visual landmarks.

Criminal and Genius Award Winner.

Chalk up another collar for the Geek Squad.

A Florida middle school teacher is facing child porn charges after illicit images were found on a laptop that he dropped off for repair at a Best Buy near his Florida residence.

William Crawford, 69, was arrested yesterday on ten counts of possession of child pornography. He subsequently resigned from his job at John Long Middle School, where he taught science.

According to a criminal complaint, Crawford last year brought his Toshiba Satellite into a Tampa Bay-area Best Buy for repair. While working on the computer, a Geek Squad technician “observed images consistent with child pornography,” prompting store officials to alert cops.

[UPDATE]

That really cool Subaru that ibguy told us about. Yeah, forget about it. It won't be available here anytime soon.

Dear Retailer:

Yesterday afternoon we learned about an unfortunate situation related to the name given to a special edition Forester by the independent distributor in Singapore. We want to make sure that you and all of your customers know that Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) and Subaru Corporation (SBR) had nothing to do with this.

We apologize for any negative feedback this may have caused. SBR has had the name removed from the car at the Singapore Auto Show. We work very hard to build a strong brand image for this company and the naming of this vehicle in no way reflects the values and standards we hold true. Furthermore, we will always do our best to protect our brand’s integrity.

For priests only, (for good or ill), The sacramental seal of a confession is inviolable. Quoting Canon 983.1 of the Code of Canon Law, the Catechism states, "...It is a crime for a confessor in any way to betray a penitent by word or in any other manner or for any reason. A priest, therefore, cannot break the seal to save his own life, to protect his good name, to refute a false accusation, to save the life of another, to aid the course of justice (like reporting a crime), or to avert a public calamity."

Back in the day, with the old pull tabs, it was well known to us that when someone first started to pull the ring, but before they pulled the tab, there was a very small opening. A sharp rap across the rim of the can with the butt end of a butter knife would result in a very forceful and widely spread spray for about 10-15 seconds. Anybody else remember this?

This isn't a case of inadvertently stumbling across incriminating evidence while repairing a computer - these cases occur because the Geek Squad person scans the hard drive (including the "unused" portion of the hard drive that contains deleted images) looking for incriminating materials, which has nothing to do with actually repairing the computer.

This is the FBI getting people to engage in a search on behalf of the FBI, which it would be illegal for the FBI to do directly without a warrant.

86 Evening, ONT'ers. Just got back from a dinner at Waldo's BBQ in Mesa. I had blackened catfish and Cajun shrimps. It was yummy, but I am now stuffed.

So, I was looking for an electric range for the house here. Craigslist was mighty shy of any in my price range. I had seen one at the Goodwill store in AJ, but wanted to check on other possibilities. Went to the nearby St. Vincent de Paul thrift store. Only ranges were quite new ones, with the solid glass cooktop, and a pretty high price, too.

So, off to Goodwill we go. Place was mobbed with people. The range I had looked at was still there, and I flagged down a staff member, and said, "I want to buy this stove." He says, "what's the price tag on it?" Me, "49.95". "OK, $25, then," and marks up a receipt for it. "Pay this up front at the till, and then drive around back, and we will load it for you." I didn't know it was a half-price sale day there. I got out of there with spending $34 for the range, two stacking chairs, a sweatshirt, and two auto manuals.

I had to go to the hardware store, and spend $26 for a 4-wire range cord to make it compatible with my range socket, but what the heck? Range is installed, and working just fine. Clock, all four burners, and both oven elements all work fine, and it cleaned up and looks good as new. And it's a white GE range of about the same vintage as the white GE side-by-side fridge I got, so my kitchen appliances look like they belong together.

93 Hi everyone, I'm drunk again, because...well, I don't have to give a reason, do I?

Spent most of Saturday at WORK, re-imaging PCs because the department that wants them is a stupid poop and smells bad. And then there were the power failures. Two of them. Meaning...oh, who cares. Meaning more work.

Will go tomorrow to finish up things. Tonight, outside, sounds like some kind of terrible monster has been unleashed. Because, you know, no one would say that a terrible monster has been "leashed." You know why? Cos you couldn't scream that the govt needs more money, for "monster control" AKA "wrong voter suppression."

Thank you, MisHum, for the ONT. Love everyone here, but don't worry it's not the touchy Joe Biden kind of love. I RESPECT all of you, maybe that's better?

Yes, it was a productive day. And I ran across a cool old vehicle today, too. A first-series Ford Econoline window van, the kind with the six-cylinder engine mounted between the front seats. I used to own one, many years ago, and it was a fun driver. This one rides high in the front, so it might be lacking an engine. But it also looks like it might not be rusty. If the body is really rust-free, and lacking major collision damage, I might snap it up. Price is right. They have become quite collectible.

165 The alt-weekly in Portland has the sads. A leftist got elected to head an American Legion post in Portland, and opened to the post up to the general public for LBGTQ trivia nights, and other left-wing activities. The Los Angeles Times and other leftist organizations got very excited that this was perhaps the beginning of a new, "woke" American Legion.

Well, the actual veterans decided that they didn't like this, and just elected a new commander who -gasp- occasionally confronts Antifa at demonstrations, and is definitely not in favor of LBGTQ trivia nights.

A new reporter for the alt-weekly wrote the story, and her little bio proudly announced that she had just graduated from the Columbia School of Journalism. Can you imagine deciding, in 2018, that spending a year of your life and $110,000 (tuition and living costs) to get a masters degree in journalism is a good idea?

And the Columbia School of Journalism still has five times as many applicants as places - there are 1,200 people out there every year who think that that this is a good idea.

I guess they think that Commissar Bernie will wave his magic wand, and forgive all the student loan debt.

Quoted in it's entirety as this is as good as it gets:

King Arthur: I am your king.

Peasant Woman: Well, I didn't vote for you.

King Arthur: You don't vote for kings.

Peasant Woman: Well, how'd you become king, then?

King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king.

Dennis the Peasant: Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

Arthur: Be quiet!

Dennis the Peasant: You can't expect to wield supreme power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!

If it were up to me I would require the defaulter to file their W-4s as single, no dependents, and any refund be taken to offset the default for 5 years on top of that.

Personally I think the universities should be on the hook for the default and screw them and their bad loans. Socializing that risk is what got us here in the first place.

Oh, and screw Bismarck too, just for good measure.

Whenever my brain's not occupied by other things, I have a constant monologue going on in my mind, trying to figure out how I would explain Average Son's life and death to someone else. Really, I'm trying to make sense of it for myself. Trying to square it with what I know and believe about him, myself, my family, the world, and God. It's really quite exhausting... It's not the difficulty of reading, it's just that I don't enjoy reading for the sake of reading, like many do. Generally, if I do read a book, it's usually non-fiction. (My favorite book as a kid was The World Book...Encyclopedia). Last book I read was J. Peterson's Twelve Steps..., just to see what the hype was about, and to see if it might have been of help for Average Son. Before that, I read Stiff, a book about what happens to the body after death. Read that several years ago. The last fiction I read was probably a Tom Clancy novel... the one about the Japanese airliner (IIRC) flying into the Capitol. That was many years ago.

Anyway, will check out Peart's book. Would be interesting also to learn a bit about Rush's history. While never a big fan, I do like much of their music and I appreciate their ethic.

387 Just got home from bowling.
I don't see why anyone would take their computer to Geek Squad
Took an HP laptop into the Geek Squad to get the internal wireless card fixed. At the time I had 8 months left on the virus protection software that they push. I told them that when the clerk asked if I would like it installed and I told him No. I go back three days later to pick up my laptop, and they tell me that they could not fix the internal wireless card and that I would have to buy an external USB wireless for $60.00 bucks. So I buy the damn thing. I get home and every application I had installed had been erased, and they had reloaded the virus protection. I called the virus protection people and they would not give me credit for the 8 months I still had coming. I canceled the contract and loaded Malware Bytes. It took me seven hours to reinstall all my applications. I went back to Best Buy and read the Geek Squad manager the riot act, but got nothing.
A couple of weeks ago we went the Friday after Christmas because they had a good price on a 65" LG 4K UHD tv. $479.00. I don't have a vehicle big enough to get it home, so I said OK to Geek Squad to deliver it. $225.00 to deliver and set it up. Crap. They said they would deliver it Monday between 4 and 6 PM. Sunday, I went and bought an LG soundbar and subwoofer because it was on sale for $119.00. Less than half price. Monday comes, 4 PM, 5 PM, 6PM, 7 PM, 8PM. (all time mountain). I call the 800 number they give me and after about a half an hour, the young lady tells me that the tech who was supposed to deliver the tv had called in sick that morning. I asked why I wasn't called to reschedule. She told me that the manager would call me by 9 PM. I went to bed at 11 PM with no phone call.

The next day, Tuesday, I went back to Best Buy and read the manager the riot act, because if they had even the slightest bit of customer service, I should have been notified but was brushed off. The best they could do was deliver and set up Wednesday the next week. I told them the least they could do was install the tv and set up the soundbar, which she agreed to and found out that would have cost an extra $50.00. So, from purchase to setup and delivery was damn near two weeks.

Geek Squad are at the very least incompetent and at the worst malicious father rapers.

During this period, known as the middle Miocene Climate Optimum, global temperatures were as much as 3 to 4 degrees warmer than today's average temperatures, similar to estimates for 2100. The position of the continents were similar to today and the seas were flourishing with life.

At first pass analysis: Global Warming causes eutrophication.

Virtually all businesses/services these days are peopled by incompetents. Generally, I assign that to the fact that very few businesses are operated by the owner.

Then, there is the general decay of society.

I had a very interesting experience with Bank of America last week. They bounced a check for no discernible reason. No one, *NO* one, can tell me why. The poor embarrassed branch manager, who exercises control over *nothing* did his best to placate me. I recognized that, and felt sympathy for the guy.

The larger systems become, the more inefficient they become, and the more error prone they become. The VA has given me an entirely new name. I haven't even bothered to try and correct it. In 'Systemantics', the author points out, 'When pushed on, systems push back'. Not because they are insidious, evil, or malevolent, but because they simply evolve to react that way.

403 I find a dizzying variety in consumer service levels.

Just tonight, a very nice young guy at Popeye's fixed things when it seemed their system had failed me. Still don't get it, but their website has deals not available merely at retail walk-up. Website does not explain things well. At first he said he couldn't execute the deal, then after some friendly/exasperated mansplanation, he played around with the system and was able to do it. His attitude was perfect.

Great young guy - I got his name and will send a message to the manager.

Almost never have "fast food", maybe 10 years since Popeye's. It was good (got a bunch for a small gathering), as I remember. But OMG the price - without the deal, that is. Not sure I would've done it at regular prices, which I found shocking. But no more than other kinds of dining out these days.

405 I need a new receiver. I had the surround sound hooked up, but not every show on tv would go through the receiver so you had to turn up the sound on the tv. Son in law used to come over to watch tv because we had cable and being cheap, he didn't want to go that route. Some nights we'd come home from bowling and I could tell he'd been there because I would turn on the tv and the receiver would be turned up to eleventy and would pin us up against the wall. Then one night we came home and turned on the system and the receiver came on then shut right off. Dead short to ground. Now I need a new receiver so I can listen to my cd's. But first I want to upgrade my Blu-Ray player to upscale all the Blu-Dvd's I have to 4K. You know, like LotR, Star Wars, Star Trek, Band of Brothers, all of that stuff!

I was in the audio retail business for a while. The first element of a sale is establishing a relationship with the potential customer. Not 'How can I help you?', but, 'How are you today?'

Generally, given time to roam around a bit, a customer will tell you what they are looking for. As long as the salesman is knowledgeable and friendly, rather than *trying* to make a sale, then the customer's budget will be discussed, and a good salesman will present a couple of options, with some comments about value/performance etc.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at January 12, 2020 01:29 AM (xSo9G)

413 Rhomboid, it seems like nobody wants to do customer service anymore. When I did tech support at Lockheed, they told us that if you give great customer service, they might tell two or three people. If you just gave OK customer service, they might tell no one. If you give bad customer service they will tell just about anyone who would listen how bad it was. Anymore, it's just crappy customer service. And I'm pretty vocal about it because I used to give damn good customer service. I brought home several awards from Lockheed for it.

The King's Choice - Norway in first several days of the German invasion, the drama of the king, his son, and the civilian cabinet (and the interesting figure of the German diplomatic envoy)

April 9 - Denmark on the first day of the German invasion, story of a bicycle infantry unit - with nice brief Band of Brothers-esque comments from actual vets from the unit at the end

Both with sub-titles. Will kinda bring your knowledge of the days starting April 8 1940 in Denmark and Norway to a higher level, if nothing else. But well done little movies.

For the most part.

If it doesn't affect someone directly, materially, it didn't happen, they don't care, and they probably literally don't know about it if it's any of the varied depredations on society that is 100% an avoidable result of an obviously stupid policy or law - as it won't be reported in the "news".

FWIW they lost a lot of business when they refused to stop sponsoring the NFL during the kneeling BS, if that's a problem for you.

Pissed me off too, but then again, boycotting the NFL is easier than switching banks.

To USAA's credit, they do more for deployed troops, as far as banking services go, than pretty much the rest of the banking chains.

I considered moving everything over to Navy FCU... but yeah, it's a huge hassle. And I'd have to get new insurance too, because NFCU doesn't offer that.

446 An assistant to Nancy Pelosi told her she had a fantastic dream last night. There was a humongous parade in Washington celebrating Pelosi. Millions lined the parade route, cheering when Nancy went past. Bands were playing;
children were throwing confetti into the air; there were balloons everywhere. It was the biggest celebration Washington had ever seen.

Nancy was very impressed and said, "That's really great! By the way, how did I look in your dream? Was my hair okay?"

Her assistant said, "I couldn't tell, the casket was closed."

447 French Jeton - seriously? Four votes?

I think I could get that many, entering when Chafee did (a few days ago?), just from errors and "none of the above" voters (though one kinda figures Libertarian primary voters are *all* of this flavor, in general).

He and Mark Sanford should campaign together. I believe 1 (one, un, ein) person showed up for Sanford's campaign launch a few months ago.

456 An old joke, as in my friend told this one decades ago:

A guy walks into a bar, sits down on a stool and asks the bartender for a martini. The bartender rustles up a martini and places it in front of the customer. He takes the martini and swallows it in one gulp. He says to the bartender, "I'll have another one of those." So the bartender makes the customer another martini which the guy then promptly downs in one huge gulp.

This causes the bartender to ask, "Geez, buddy, you just downed two martinis in two gulps. What the hell are you celebrating?"

The guy tells the bartender, "I just had my first blow job!"

The bartender tells him, "That's great! Can I make you another martini?"

The guy replies, "No, thanks. If two won't wash out the taste, the third one won't, either."

465 Mornin', all.

Snowmageddon never really happened. Rain, ice, sleet, turned to snow about 6 hours before originally predicted, then pretty much stopped after 1/2. Then it started up again later in the day as a fine snow that gave us maybe 1.5".

Big surprise, the weather forecasters were wrong. Again.
