Reality Show Star Destroys Some Illusions [KT]

solemioooo.jpeg

Reality replaces the reality show

There are people who mock real Americans for electing the star of a reality show as president. But many of those same people seem to hang on to really bizarre illusions in the face of reality. For those who have eyes to see, many illusions have been shattered by Donald Trump's presidency. Does anybody here feel the same way about the bureaucracy in Washington D.C. as they did before Trump took office?

Recently, more illusions about the nature of the long war have been destroyed. Doesn't mean the media can't make up some new ones:

If anything may be gleaned from the recent hyperbolic reporting about Iran, it is that our media betters, particularly those reporting on national security issues, are deeply and inexorably challenged at providing reasonable and thoughtful analysis due to a blinding animus towards President Trump.

Nothing evinces this phenomenon more succinctly than the recent days in which supposedly serious national security reporters waxed poetic about the likelihood of World War III, while sharing unverified reports about tens of killings of Americans from Iranian state media. . . .

The level of breathless misinformation and disinformation spread after Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani's killing by the individuals we rely on supposedly to report facts and offer analysis in a responsible and undramatized manner was stunning. But this isn't their first rodeo.

No, such grossly hyperbolic reporting for the sake of convincing people that Trump may have created an epically destructive policy quagmire has become the new calling card of the media. The media has shown that they cannot eviscerate Trump with factual, state-of-affairs reporting because those affairs are never quite dire enough for the media. Similarly, for the sake of avoiding flat-out lying entirely (although it is entertaining to watch the "mistakes" go in one direction), the media is forced to cabin their criticism in fantastic projections.

Trump almost started World War III. Trump almost catalyzed the entire destruction of the Kurds. Trump almost started war with North Korea. Trump almost started a full-blown war between the Palestinian-Arabs and the Israelis. Trump almost devastated the economy by slapping tariffs on Chinese goods. See how much heavy-lifting the word "almost" is doing? It's utterly bizarre, because these predictions never happen. . . .

Iran's Secret War

Sometimes Richard Fernandez has an interesting insight or two. World War III didn't happen, but something else did. Iran has been waging war by proxy for years, but their responsibility for most of this war has largely been ignored. We knew, but we didn't know. Now we know.

Soleimani killed thousands upon thousands, both Americans and others over the years. But secret war is never real until you put a face to it. Soleimani was the man, the Islamic Republic was the regime that no one was supposed to anger lest they turn their baleful glare on us instead of passing by to kill someone else.

That fact can't be hidden anymore, not even by the nuclear deal.

The end of the secret war phase has left Iran with the strategic problem of continuing a campaign it cannot afford to wage openly. But it also left Washington with a situation they can neither continue to deny nor fob off with nonbinding congressional resolutions. . .

How did this situation come to be?

Well, for one thing, the press has been allowing itself to be fooled for a long time. Donald Trump and the mythmakers:

For the past 40-odd years, two narratives have guided American Middle East policy. Both were invented by the Carter administration. One relates to Iran. One relates to Israel.

Both narratives reject reality as the basis for foreign policy decision-making in favor of delusion. Over the past two months, President Donald Trump has rejected and disavowed them both. His opponents are apoplectic.

As far as Iran is concerned, as journalist Lee Smith explained in Tablet online magazine this week, when Iranian "students" seized the US Embassy in Tehran in November 1979 and held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days, they placed the Carter administration in a dilemma: If President Jimmy Carter acknowledged that the "students" weren't students, but soldiers of Iran's dictator Ayatollah Khomeini, the US would be compelled to fight back. And Carter and his advisers didn't want to do that.

So rather than admit the truth, Carter accepted the absurd fiction spun by the regime that Khomeini was an innocent bystander who, try as he might, couldn't get a bunch of "students" in central Tehran to free the hostages. .

So too, as Smith noted, the Carter administration was propelled by guilt. The worldviews of many members of the administration had been shaped on radical university campuses in the 1960s. . . .

Khomeini and his "Death to America" shouting followers got the message. They understood that Washington had given them a green light to attack Americans in moderate and, as Smith put it, "plausibly deniable" doses. it. For the next 40 years, Iran maintained its aggression against America. And from Ronald Reagan to Barack Obama, every president since Carter accepted and kept faith with Carter's decision not to hold the Iranian regime responsible for the acts of aggression and war it carried out against America through proxies.

Stunning.

Illusions among our friends are also possible today. I have run across some people this week who believe that no one in Iran outside of the Iranian government could have supported the murderous General Soleimani.

Here's a rather balanced dose of reality from Small Dead Animals, an interview with an Iranian-Canadian who grew up in Tehran, an ex-Muslim who does not support Trump, but whose analysis of the attitudes of the Iranian people is interesting. He suggests that they really, really hate Sunnis and Arabs. One reason many of them supported Soleimani.

He also mentions the importation of boys from Afghanistan to fight and die in Soleimani's proxy wars. A human rights topic that is not discussed much.

He talks about the pride of even secular Iranians in the growing influence of their country in the region. And he reminds us that "Quds", the name of the force headed up by Soleimani, means "Jerusalem".

We do not suddenly have peace in the Middle East, despite the recent steps in the right direction.

Also included at the link: Trudeau insults Trump. Not in English, but in French.

Never mind. Some people are being forced to face reality. Hope this trend continues.

See? This is what happens when you have a weakling as President. He should've given the Iranians an ultimatum to release the hostages at once or there'd be hell to pay. Then let our military off the leash and let them have some fun with our sworn enemies.

What I'm seeing so far, of the prince's horrible wife:

1. She lacks class
2. She's a lefty
3. She's not good enough for our precious prince

Seriously folks, I'm having a hard time separating these people for the real world, and as such, I still don't know what this woman has supposed to have done that's so bad.

And frankly, "she's taking her little precious husband away from his family" doesn't sound like a bad thing to me. That family is hot garbage.

Fake News and all local fake news want you to know that this smashburger place is having a special debut off their chicken sandwich this Sunday. (This isn't news, it's an advertisement.)

Fake News even included the hash tag in their advertisement for the woke company. I'm not going to type the hash tag. I'll tell you it has something to do with being pro-homo and anti-normal under the guise of being inclusive.

I suppose if she was using her platform to corrupt the moral certitude of the British people, to live as a free and dignified people, I'd be steamed about it.

But Britain has no morals or dignity.

So she's a soap opera character, and as of right now, the villain.

Even though her late mother in law was a whore, who died with her boyfriend after a car chase, and her father in law is a simpering rich white guy who goes around sucking up to the common people by complaining what evil assholes rich white guys are.

And grandma seems to be the only sane one, but then all she she does is sit around "looking" dignified, saying pretty much nothing, because really, what is there to say.

So yeah, in the end I'm going to chalk this one up, the fact that people hate this broad, the black girl who married the prince, to the fact that people get bored and they like drama.

The local newspaper does this a lot. A Facebook blast about a business opening (kinda news) that's all about the great deals and food (advertising). Or just "this business is having a sale" or "this business has a new product." That's not news. Its just flat out advertising.

The worst example of lazy news was the string of stories about the Golden Globes after the show. Every one of them carried the same stories. None of them mentioned Ricky Gervais going full flamethrower. All were clearly press releases sent out by the Golden Globes. It was pathetic.

57 If more ballet was like that Nutcracker segment I might show more interest. But the corps de tutus prancing about on stage and a couple of lead dancers striking dramatic attitudes just makes me fidgety.

And don't get me started on modern dance. It eliminates the good parts of ballet in order to focus on the boring and pretentious stuff.

The last time I paid to see a dance performance I did it by stuffing bills in the dancer's stocking.

In all of the news stories and photos of her, it's brutally apparent that the whole thing has been stage managed for effect. Everything has the feel of "how does this make me look, how will I be perceived" ...(soup kitchens, the "reveal" of the newborn, the release of her new "trademark" the M topped by a crown). She's not living her life, she's a star in the biggest role of her life.

If the ballerinas are wearing those slippers, you can't see their feet. The dancer in the posted vid is barefoot, which is great, but you're right, pro dancers really beat their feet up.

When Linda wanted to see The Nutcracker, I took it as a good thing on several levels. It was her Xmas present; I wanted to see how the downtown theater, where I used to watch movies as a kid, looked now; and I was curious about the staging and the set as well as the dancing.

We KNEW they were behind the Barracks Bombing in 83, yet would not go after them in public, and our withdrawing from Lebanon was seen as a victory by Iran. They then proceeded to slowly take over the country, and Hezbollah was formed.

Now, he did help forment the Iran Iraq war (1980-198, which kept them partly busy, but his eye was on the Soviets.

Then Bush Senior, who with a HUGE show of Force, did Desert Storm, halfway. I remember sitting on my Destroyer in the Gulf asking 'what, we're stopping?'

Shorter version: she redlines my narc-meter.

Sure.

People compare her to Yoko. Yoko broke up the Beatles, she brainwashed John, she was crazy and weird.

But you know who loved Yoko? John did.

So I don't think it matters one bit that everyone else thought Yoko was bad for him. He didn't, and frankly the rest of the world can go f**k itself, when it comes to couples and their happiness.

63 I believe that a majority of likely voters don't read much beyond their texts and Facebook, and have been convinced that Trump brought us to the cliff of WW3 and nuclear war, and that it was the integrity of the Iranian leaders that prevented it.

And while that majority is slim, it will hold, because the ruling class will push the narrative.

64 Iran's regime and its policies are so popular in the country that thousands of protesters must be shot and imprisoned, and the internet and social media shut off or filtered.

And the protests routinely feature specific denunciations of the regime's foreign adventures and interference.

Also very misleading to ignore the enormous differences in policies between different US administrations.

The common failure was indeed not confronting/punishing Iran nearly enough for its proxy attacks on Americans/American interests - but there were great and consequential differences in policies over the 40 years.

69 That analysis of middle east policy seems dead on to me as well. Reagan was very set against actually doing anything about most of the horrors perpetrated against the US in the Middle East, he wanted no wars or invasions. I think oil played a big part, I think Saudi dollars did as well. But mostly I think presidents saw it as a huge quagmire they didn't want to partake in.

Bush was the only president who was willing to pull the trigger and actually treat Iran as the foe it was. He didn't directly attack them but the theory he used was sound enough, other than leftist treason and weak American will to carry out the task.

If we had a press and entertainment media all in on fighting terrorism and Islam, like in WW2, yeah probably could have worked. It just takes a 24 hour, 7 days a week full press effort to get Americans willing to put up with the long fight. And we just don't have that. The Greatest Generation wasn't inherently superior to us in this. They just had the moral support and constant urging to keep going.

And even with that, they were getting mighty sick of it after just 5 years.

134 I like a lot of the music in ballet, but the actual dancing leaves me disinterested. Even the pretty girls don't really help, because they're doing pointless, silly crap. Its kind of like having a tone deaf ear: all I see are people doing ridiculous movements that have little to nothing to do with the music, and having no apparent embarrassment about it. They should all run off stage weeping about how stupid and silly they look and are acting.

138 The thing is, with the Obama administration, I think they took a different tack than the Carter policy. I think they were active and deliberately supportive of Iran. I think they believed Iran could become a superpower in the region and through that develop into a calming, controlling influence that would stabilize the middle east.

Which is so radically stupid and insane it could only come from the mind of academics and radicals.

Not sure where I heard this, but a British peer was sniffing with disdain at how people can get titles for writing or singing or whatnot and the recipient (whom he was addressing) got all huffy, and sayd "Oh yeah, what did your ancestor do for the family title?"

"He killed people with an axe - like a real peer!"There are still real aristocrats in the UK, chiefly the ones who join the service. I met a guy on a message board who said his platoon commander could trace his line all way back the Blenheim. The men knew he'd die rather than dishonour his family name.

Kristen Stewart is no Ripley. Siggy Weaver had an expressive, attractive face that was interesting to look at; Stewart just looks sullen or deadpan. 161 Chris Taylor points out the starkest example, and most disastrous, of what I was saying. The Obama policy on Iran was literally difficult to believe - that it was actually happening.

Seeing the most blood-drenched, aggressive, committed non-superpower adversary we've faced since WWII as a quasi-partner and guarantor of our interests, and doing a ridiculously ineffectual anti-proliferation deal with them, was easily the greatest foreign policy blunder in modern history.

And that's on top of, and related to, recklessly and idiotically abandoning our position in Iraq and doing nothing to counter the Iranian influx that followed.

Yeah Jennifer Lawrence walks through her roles with a sort of stoned, empty look. She relies entirely on her young pretty looks but has almost no screen presence and is strangely... morphable. Sometimes she looks great, sometimes she looks like the waitress at Denny's you might take out after her shift is over.

While I don't think Scarlett Johansson is nearly as pretty as others do, she is consistently attractive and can actually act. She'll have something to offer when her looks finally fade entirely and she gets one of those terrifying face lifts.

195 If you're bored, there's an interesting article at NR (yeah, yeah) about movie posters, especially the non-sanctioned hand-drawn types:

“Baptized by Beefcake: The Golden Age of Hand-Painted Movie Posters from Ghana” is great fun. Ghana was the first African colony to win its independence from Britain. It was freshly liberated and unusually prosperous — 10 percent of the world’s gold was mined there — but its aesthetic was fledgling, part indigenous and part English. Amid ethnic and political divisions, American adventure and action-hero movies provided a unified national vernacular.

The Ghanaian movie business thrived. The posters in the show, big and brassy, are spinoffs of American mass-produced posters but they’re individually hand-painted, a striking mix of Hollywood tinsel and folk art. Movie promoters — really, traveling salesmen — would go to small towns that had cinemas or even spaces such as churches that could be converted to pop-up theaters. They’d hawk upcoming features, using the posters as marketing material or, in the 1970s and 1980s, market films at video stores."

You have to try not to fantasize to much about the hot chicks while wondering how any of this is artistic or even entertaining while pretending to have a good time so your date might show you how much she appreciates you going. Which brings you back to fantasizing about the ballerinas.

Posted by: BurtTC at January 11, 2020 12:49 PM (hku12)

One big issue that is contributing to Brits being up in arms is who is paying for all this. Yes, they want to be financially independent, but until then is the British taxpayer going to continue footing their security bills, for example? Furthermore, since they want to live in Canada and also go frequently to the States, Canadian and yes, US taxpayers may be on the hook for security costs. Plus their security is currently handled entirely by UK personnel; them primarily spending their time in North America is unfair for those people, who have family of their own (yes, I know it's their job). During their 6-week stay in Canada over Christmas they had to rotate the 6-person detail partway through.

As well, because they want to still do some royal stuff, like show up in the UK when they need to for certain events and maybe do some tours, that means they'll still have the British taxpayer forking out money for them.

Finally, money is still being spent on renovating the place they were given to live on the Windsor estate (to the tune of millions of pounds) and now they're not even going to live there for a good chunk of the year?

There were 57, the vast majority of them dual citizens with Iran as well as university students, and they were coming back after the winter break. Quite a few of them had gone to Iran for a wedding, including the bride and groom.
So when they say "Canadians" they're leaving out the fact that most of them were also Iranian citizens.

Posted by: Downcast at January 11, 2020 01:15 PM (1PYHw)

Never heard of it.

Season 3 of Mrs. Maisel has an episode where they are doing a live read for a radio show, and it's an ad for Phyllis Schlafly and her run for Congress. They put words in the ad that Schlafly never would have said, didn't advocate, and wouldn't have made any sense in 1960 anyway.

The writers ought to be sued for libel.

A lot of them were attending a wedding - including a bride and groom who were also on the plane. Most of the foreign nationals are of Iranian descent if not immigrants to the western nation they are credited to.

I skimmed across this week, neither participating in threads here, or delving into mainstream media coverage on this whole Iran thing.

So without any input from elsewhere, I concluded early on that Trump really blackened Iran's eye, and Iran did what they had to do to "save face" by launching some rockets.

So my impression is, we're exactly where we were before we killed the terrorist. Which is to say, Iran is on a short leash. Don't do anything stupid, we're keeping economic pressure on, and if we sniff any indications you're planning to attack any American interest, anywhere, you'll be sorry.

Which Iran knows. No matter what they say publicly.

So we don't have to go to war here, and I don't think the Trump administration wants to. They want to influence Iranian behavior, and possibly... possibly, effect regime change without it costing us any American lives.

Seems like brilliant strategy to me.

No matter what the chattering classes on various sides have to say.

Seems like brilliant strategy to me.

No matter what the chattering classes on various sides have to say.

the house they use for the outside shots (i'm assuming that's all, since i've never seen a minute of it) is about 1.5 miles from me.

the only reason i know is that they had a sign out front for awhile advertising the house for rent for other shoots.

337 I am not a conspiracy theory type, but it is so uncharacteristic for Iran to take responsibility for downing the plane that it made me wonder. I mean, normally they blatantly lie about everything and don't care whether they are called on it.

So why do this now? The only explanation is that the truth was worse. Seems far fetched to me, but perhaps they shot down the plane deliberately planning to blame it on the US's return fire. But then there wasn't any return fire so they were stuck.

Horribly short sighted and immeasurably depraved, but then we are talking about Iran.

It's entirely possible they'll recover from it, but Season 3 was a complete mess. The first two seasons were truly marvelous, and well worth seeing.

Especially I would assume, for anyone familiar with the time and/or place in which it is set.

No, other than the abomination that was their treatment of Phyllis Schlafly, the crime they committed during this season was taking characters were got to know (and love) in the first two seasons, and turning them into caricatures of themselves.

And in the service of having a story go the way they wanted, they forced people to act very differently from how they were acting in the prior seasons.

I suspect, but don't know, there were different writers on this season. That creative control was left in the hands of people who were not responsible for Seasons 1 and 2.

It's a shame, because it was great television. Really.

359 I just read the the Sultan of Oman, Qaboos bin Said, has passed away. He ruled Oman for 50 years, and modernized the country tremendously. It's very Western friendly, since he went to Sandhurst and was in the British military for several years before returning to Oman.

It is one of my favorite places in the world. The people are amazingly friendly, the country is beautiful, and they are pragmatic.

His cousin Haitham bin Said has succeeded him. I know nothing of this fellow, so it will be interesting (in a not good way) to see what happens. Oman is on the Strait of Hormuz across from Iran, and has had to balance that relationship carefully. I hope to goodness the new Sultan is wise in how he goes forward.

371 The tragically funny thing about this is that the Armed Forces have known this for years...or at least, some had an idea.

I was assigned to the Persian Farsi school at the Defense Language Institute at Monterey in 1995, where I quickly learned what the reality actually is. The problem was that -- at least for the Army -- some of the careerists in the upper ranks were too busy playing politics, expecting to keep kicking the can down the road indefinitely. So the Farsi school ended up being something of the redheaded stepchild to the Arabic and Russian schools. Yet, they'd still keep sending a bunch of potential interpreters and analysts to the school even though they weren't sure exactly what to do with them.

I think even the brass who knew that it was only a matter of time before Shit Got Real had to contend with the fact that the politicians thought they just magically knew better without knowing a single word of Farsi. I mean, they're all Super Smart(TM), so they couldn't possibly know less than a bunch of lower-class enlistees and junior officers, amirite?
