The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"These are my scars on full display in 2019. I'm proud of my scars and love my body just the way it is. I call them my battle wounds because they signify the strength and perseverance it took to finally complete my transition." Jazz Jennings

Quote II

"And that may be true, I wasn't there and I don't know the facts that somebody in the congregation had their own gun and killed the person who murdered two other people, but it is the job of law enforcement to have guns and to decide when to shoot. You just do not want the average citizen carrying a gun in a crowded place." Former NYC Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, Candidate for POTUS

Quote III

We forget that knowledge can be found at all ages, and in all places. And ethics has nothing to do with degrees or pedigrees.Victor Davis Hanson

Quote IV

‘I feel for that Greta. She has been brainwashed into thinking that there is climate change and there isn’t.

‘She hasn’t done anything wrong but she’s been forced into thinking that what she is saying is true.’ Meat Loaf

Quote V

"Further data collection is not legally permissible. Both internally and externally, any classification that could be used to depreciate human beings must be avoided. In this respect, the use of the term 'family clan' (Familienclan) is forbidden from the police point of view."NRW Interior Minister Ralf Jäger

They spent years fighting one another. Times have changed. If Iraq wants to be governed by Iran. So be it. The parliament of Iraq wants U.S. troops out.

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Parliament called for the expulsion of U.S. troops from the country Sunday in reaction to the American drone attack that killed a top Iranian general, raising the prospect of a withdrawal that could allow a resurgence by Islamic State extremists.

Lawmakers approved a resolution asking the Iraqi government to end the agreement under which Washington sent forces more than four years ago to help in the fight against ISIS.

The bill is subject to approval by the Iraqi government. Even then, canceling the U.S.-Iraq agreement requires giving the Americans a one-year notice for withdrawal.

We took out a bad guy and can leave that f*cking hell hole. I'm OK with that. Wonder who Captain Bill and all of his faculty lounge warmongers are going to hate and want American treasure to die for next.

Don't worry, I will remain the Misanthropic Humanitarian not the "Naked Philanthropist".

A woman on Instagram just pulled off a massive, and rather nontraditional, fundraising campaign.

Kaylen, who calls herself the “naked philanthropist” online, had a clever idea when she heard of the damage the fires in Australia are wreaking. On Jan. 3, Kaylen made a new post to her Instagram, promising an exchange with any users who were willing to donate. As long as at least $10 went to the cause, Kaylen would reward donors with a nude. Simple, sweet, and—as it turns out—massively effective. Over the course of the next several days, Kaylen managed to rack up more than $300,000 in donations.

My Semester With the Snowflakes - At 52, I was accepted to Yale as a freshman. The students I met there surprised me.

Now back to that bridge. I need to figure out how to actually build one. Good thing I’ve found a place where I can get help. If this place is peopled by “snowflakes” I’m proudly one of them. I’m a snowflake with a purple heart.

Peace.

Jeez, I have no idea why the MSM is despised. No clue whatsoever.

The media has a less than stellar track record when it comes to their assessments of heinous, murderous leaders. Such was the case in 2017, when Time magazine referred to the now-deceased Iranian terrorist leader Qasem Soleimani as “James Bond, Erwin Rommel and Lady Gaga rolled into one.”

Your eyes do not deceive you. Yes, this is an actual quote derived from Time’s 100 Most Influential list in which Soleimani was included. The introductory sentence written by former CIA analyst Kenneth M. Pollack is a quintessential example of the tone- deaf mentality those in the media possess: "To Middle Eastern Shi'ites, he is James Bond, Erwin Rommel and Lady Gaga rolled into one."

Elections have consequences. Every day water usage might make you a "criminal".

The blue governments that Californians continually vote in may have finally crossed the line, at least so it seems to these KTLA news anchors.

A video of the show titled “KTLA 5 Morning News Anchors Get Redpilled,” shows the anchors discussing the matter at hand, specifically regarding California’s 55 gallon-of-water-per-day.

“I’m not sure how I feel about this,” said anchor Jessica Holmes to her co-anchors. “You’re not going to be allowed to shower and do a load of laundry in the same day.”

While that may sound insane, what California Attorney Richard Lee breaks down the hypothetical figures.

I believe there is a bar of soap and a shower joke to be made.

Tomorrow, January 6th is #JewishandProud Day. If you are going to celebrate, keep your head on a swivel.

“Whether you have a kippah, a necklace with a Jewish symbol, a t-shirt written in Hebrew, or anything else identifiably Jewish, wear your Jewishness publicly and proudly, in the United States or abroad, in cities big and small,” said the AJC. “Even if you don’t have something identifiably Jewish to wear, print our #JewishandProud sign or make your own image featuring the #JewishandProud slogan and post a photo of yourself with the image and hashtag on social media.”

Those who are not Jewish are invited to use the hashtag online or submit a message at AJC.org/JewishandProud about what they will be doing in 2020 to support the Jewish community.

Who knew that spare change could make such a difference. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Back in 2016, a determined Irishman began collecting spare change to help sick children—and he is now on track to buy an MRI machine for a local hospital.

Liam Duggan first started pursuing his dream of building a children’s hospital by standing outside of a local cafe with a cardboard sign so he could gather spare change from generous passerby.

77 Oh, and I think we should stay in Iraq - not as part of some propping up the Iraqi regime, but for our own purposes. We tell the Iraqis that we're going to hang around and we're going to build a giant training-size base there (like Grafenwoer, but with more sand, less beer, and uglier women) and it will be our forward point of presence in the Middle East. And we can either pay them a stipend for use of their land, or we can do it for free if they decide not to be our friends.

The base should include a huge runway (capable of handling B52s in ME heat), an Iron Dome-like system, decent barracks with the capacity to add thousands of troops in tents or whatnot in short order, and maneuver and firing ranges.
From there we can simply reach out and touch whomever needs to be touched (like Soleimaini was touched, or like Saddam was touched - anywhere along that spectrum).

145 I think the Shiite militia's blinked today. Now of course they could raise hell tomorrow or another day, one never knows - but they had been threatening to launch nationwide attacks on American assets as soon as the Iraqi Parliament voted to ask American Troops to leave. But Trump told them what would happen if they did anything like that, and they chose to do... Nothing.

and even the leftist idiots here were thrilled, the "Vote" in their Parliament was a big fraud. The militias had been threatening the lives and the families of anyone who voted against the resolution, so the Sunni's and the Kurds boycotted the session, and *only* the pro-Iranian Shiite deputies showed up today. And even with an all-Iranian session, even they were scared to do more than vote for a fairly mealy mouthed statement of intent with no enforcement provisions.

So, Trump won today. and Yesterday. and He's going to win Tomorrow.

156 When I say the dumbing-down-beyond-recognition of America isn't limited to the racist-authoritarians ("progressives", "liberals", Dems), it's days like today I have in mind.

Many not-stupid, reasonable, and knowledgeable people saying very dumb, formulaic crap. The non-elite nature of the "elites" does not just apply to the racist-authoritarians.

Just one of many examples. Trump's reference to cultural sites as potential targets in Iran almost surely relates to the typical regional practice of committing a war crime* by placing legit military targets in/near "protected" sites under int'l law.

Yet many otherwise sensible people very well informed on the region are reacting as though Trump was just trying to sound as unshackled as possible, and clumsily risking alienation of Iran's populace, who clearly would be fine with wholesale regime change in Tehran.

* deliberately placing legitimate military targets in protected locations, such as hospitals, places of worship, schools - such as was standard practice for Saddam and the dirtbag thugs who we defeated after his demise - is *itself* a war crime, while an attack on these targets is not ipso facto a crime

173 Just one of many examples. Trump's reference to cultural sites as potential targets in Iran almost surely relates to the typical regional practice of committing a war crime* by placing legit military targets in/near "protected" sites under int'l law."

Although you could be right, and if Iran has even a few functioning brain cells left we may never know for sure, I took his comment completely differently.

I think he was letting them know that he was threatening to blow up the great Mausoleum of the Ayatollah Khomeini, located in Tehran, which is a hugely important symbol. Taking that out would hurt them 100 times more than any economic or military target ever could. For us, it would be like blowing up the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials.

It's the symbol of the Legitimacy of their Regime.

174 Tom Servo, good that you pointed out the actual nature of the vote in Baghdad. They barely managed a quorum (just 4 to spare), because the Kurds, and those other devoted fans of the US - the Iraqi Sunnis (!!!) boycotted. For a non-binding resolution that is actually technically irrelevant, not just non-binding, as the equivalent of a US status of forces deal there is not based on legislation nor subject to revocation by parliament.

And the full political context - in an Iraq where much of the parliament is politically under siege, specifically for being tools of Iran (whose consulates have been burned several times recently by grassroots mobs), and the PM has been forced to bow out - is also completely missing from "reporting" or most people's understanding.

And it's not just the "leftists" ignorantly celebrating this development. Will leave that, at that, for now.

The wasting of a cultural site can have a big effect in warfare, and go a long ways toward creating the mindset necessary for accepting defeat.

Imagine here the impact of having an enemy's missile attack ruining forever Independence Hall in Philadelphia, or whatever building in D.C. houses the founding documents. Or St Patrick's cathedral in NYC.

The knowledge that the enemy had precision-targeted sites like that and then in fact hit them with dead-on accuracy, would be shocking.

The answer in a pluralistic society which embraces freedom is that personal behavior is not to be restricted by Government UNLESS and UNTIL it crosses a line and interferes with the freedoms and behavior of someone else. And yes, picketing and demonstrating against other people, not the government, is NOT political, it is abusive, and I would gladly use police and or military force to stamp all of it out. I would crush Westboro just as happily as I would crush Antifa.

Shoot, missed this.

The semester went well. I taught U.S. History to 1865, and while it was mostly freshmen who were taking the course because they had to, I did have a lot of them tell me they really enjoyed the course and learned a lot from it.

And I think some of it got through to them. Obviously, I'm not going to bloviate on the glories of capitalism every lecture, but I also made it clear that I thought a lot of those evil Dead White Men were to be admired, and some of the students saw that. The final essays I graded on the Civil War, for example, often had things to say like "I think Grant and Lee were both trying to do what they thought was right," etc. At the very least, I don't think a lot of my students are going to go out and vandalize statues of the Founding Fathers.

276 I'm studying Isaiah in SS.

In Isaiah 58, the Lord makes fairly clear that the adherence to legalistic practices outwardly while ignoring the wishes of God at his heart is not what draws God near to us, delights Him and draws Him to us when we call.

Jesus reminds us of the same in Mark 2:23 when legalists determine His actions aren't in keeping with the law in an effort to place their own judgement and ritual over the earnest desires of the Lord.

If the Lord speaks through a female, He speaks through a female. You'll know the righteousness of it through the Lord's revealed word in Scripture. I've yet to read anything from Fen's posts that drive mankind away from the heart of God, only towards it.

I have, on untold instances, heard many a male try to pervert the holy word of the Lord. We'd do well to stop pretending that the truth can only come from type of human, and instead focus on the personal knowledge of God and His expectations for us.

That's my opinion and that's my relationship with the Lord. John the Baptist did not draw the approval of the Pharisees in his time, and yet the truth of the Lord and His only begotten son were witnessed by him while all others thought him mad.

Truth and righteousness will come from where God wills it, our rules be damned. I will take the proper subservient position and listen.

Also, I've had four Miller Lites, so I may be spitballing here.

290 anyway, the main problem i had with my Venus colony scheme was that it depends on some stations in Venus and Earth high orbit. Next time there is a solar flare, everyone up there is getting an irradiated bunghole.

O'Neill cylinders fix that. 20 km long and about 3.6 km radius, spinning at a nice slow 2.8 degrees a second to reduce Coriolis effect. That's 8.666 ms-2, just like Venus at 70 km up, and not far from our 9.8. Pad out the outside with a sh!tload of shielding... or just hollow out an asteroid and let its silica do the trick.

Park this sucker at Venus' L4 or L5, or even high in Venus' orbit. Now everyone has a place to stay when mining Venus or (more likely) those inner asteroids. And to shield those interplanetary ships which can get flown out to Mars, Jupiter and so on.

311 Went to the nearby Aldi market yesterday wanting to buy, among other things, scallions. They sell better scallions than the nearby Walmart and Publix stores, and at half the price.

Aldi was out, it was late in the day, and they Aldi guy in the aisle picking up some empty boxes said they get a truck every morning, and scallions would be on the truck.

In fact, I though, they were probably already on that truck, just loaded minutes ago, and the reason they are on and in the right quantity, have to do with systems, not people. Computers, the cloud, server farms, fiber optic pipelines, uplinks, transmitters, repeaters, antennae, and overall, the WWW.

Iran's feeding itself with a little less technology involved than we are, but maybe just a little bit less. Are their server farms hardened as are their centrifuge sites?

Who knows. Well, maybe we know.

Iran, like almost everywhere else, has its population increasingly centered in its largest cities, and in those cities, as in ours, most everyone is about six meals away from starvation. If you break that link that allows Aldi to deliver the scallions, and the milk and eggs and chicken and chocolate bars and everything else, and you break it so it can't be fixed, things start to get complicated.

Maybe the cultural sites thing is just a ruse, and we know how to do something worse to them. If we cannot succeed with secondary sanctions, meaning cutting off the food India sells them by threatening India with sanctions of their own, maybe all we do is blast the server farms that link their Aldi trucks to their Aldi shelves, with a few hundred Hellfire missiles.

This sounds odd in our post-modern age, but the warning is there for a reason and you can ignore it at your own peril. Just as with sodomy, a church that has women in leadership where they have authority over men will have other heresies going on.

393 No, hitting cultural sites for no practical reason doesn't offer any mileage, other than impressing web commenters, who aren't the audience. Hitting them because they're being used to shield legit targets would be something to consider, weighing the payoff. We're talking about a regime under siege from its people, who we want to see topple it.

And no, hitting cultural sites also doesn't offer any special return in war. Leveling Heidelberg would have made zero difference with Germans. Avoiding Kyoto* did not prolong the war, leveling it would not have shortened the war. All depends, every situation is different.

* deliberately done, by the same people who didn't hesitate to nuke cities - almost as if there's more to it than many seem to believe

408 "The lines are long, and prices are ridiculous. With taxes, the price is over $100 a gram!"

There is a pot dispensary (formerly just for medical pot) a few blocks down the street from us. People were camping out in line in front of the place on New Year's Eve and the local paper had pictures of the line snaking around the block the next morning.

In case you were wondering -- no, there were not, AFAIK, any NYE parties where IL residents lit up legal joints at midnight. The reason: the pot legalization law specified that it didn't take effect until 7 a.m. on Jan. 1.

The black-market pot in Canada is much cheaper than the legal shit. There will be a lot of bankruptcies this year in companies started to make it big in legal pot. Market capitalization is already taking a huge hit.

421 I've read a lot of non-fiction and I do enjoy books about generals, a good one was "American Caesar". December 8, 1941 the good people of the Philippines woke up to wave after wave of Japanese bombers followed by an armada, the Japanese swept through chopping off heads in every public square and making it clear that they owned the place now. After the liberation there was an investigation and it was found that there was a big rush by all the celebrities, pop culture stars and wealthy business owners to embrace their new masters and to sign papers recognizing the new government. That might in part explain Hollywood and big tech's embrace of their perceived new globalist masters. They really "know nothing about the real world" and are convinced that global communism will inevitably prevail.

456 "people are posting copies of their recipts for their pot purchase, showing prices as high as $120/gram with tax"

Then there are the humongous taxes and fees that the growers, infusers, and dispensaries have to pay. (Ask me how I know -- I spent a lot of the last two weeks proofreading the regulations that the Depts. of Ag, Revenue, etc. are issuing in relation to this law.) The security regulations for pot cultivation centers would put Fort Knox or a nuclear bomb factory to shame, and the licensing fees run to thousands of dollars.

To top it all off, there are "social equity" provisions in the law providing that if you, or your community, were "disproportionately impacted" by past enforcement of pot laws, you get specific preferences and breaks if you apply for a cannabis related business license. For example, if you were arrested or did jail time for a pot-related offense that would NOT be illegal under current law, or you live in a census tract that had a disproportionately high rate of arrests for such offenses, you get a leg up in the licensing process. This was all part of the law when it was passed and was a key part of getting certain constituencies to support it.

This light and knowledge is given liberally to all that seek as part of the Grace of God and is directed only through the authority of the Holy Ghost. One of the things that throw a monkey wrench into man-clarified theories of God, is that the OT makes it clear that the God of Israel didn't like "The High Places" (shrines and altars on mountains). All the reformers "followed God" and destroyed "The High Places".

But, Samson's Manoah offers a goat "on a rock", the ['/i]"angel of the Lord" (some people have it as a pre-Incarnation Jesus) ascends in the flame. The wife thinks that they are going to die because “We have seen God!”

To which Manoah counters:
---
“If the Lord had meant to kill us, he would not have accepted a burnt offering and grain offering from our hands, nor shown us all these things or now told us this.”
---

Remember the tribe of Ruben had already gotten into trouble not sacrificing at their own rock, away from the tabernacle.

We should be like our God, using grace and his ultimate authority as our guide, not man-extrapolated rules.

They skin the penis and use the skin to make the lining of the fake vagina (taking care to retain as many nerve endings as possible).

So, yeah, if all goes well they can have a "clitoris" with sensitivity.

And they all had to sit and listen to it. And we got to listen to it while watching them squirm. It really was pretty glorious. And the night went pretty wobbly from there.

Arquette lost her shit over climate change, angry and detestable. Cate Blanchett rattled on about Gaia burning Australia, while dressed as an art-deco chicken. Then Joaquin Phoenix rubbed his last two marbles together to beg them all to quit being such big fucking hypocrites by jetting off to Palm Springs for the weekends. Again, the audience was befuddled.

Finally, when all the paper weights were given, Ricky closed down the evening by entreating the celebrities to "Go on, get drunk. Do your drugs. And fuck off."

So I just let my patient, (former military with apparent connections) show me the aftereffects (shot with a high end SLR) of what Room temperature Soleimani looked like immediately after his....accident. With a green grass background he came to rest on (or was pulled to by the chunks from the flaming wad from concerned passer by's, I cannot say. The flash was well screened for the night shots.

As a former ER nurse, I can say without a doubt the fragmentation of his extremities into chunk mass, an arm and a leg held to the torso by a tendon or two only, the upper body, head deeply flash burned to a goo like mass and the comparison shot of the segmented arm and hand lying on the grass that held the ring they did the ident with compared to a recent photo of him with the same ring.....Yeah, I've seen stuff like this from car wreaks...yet the body is more or less whole. This guy was in 4 or 5 definitive pieces of post blast trauma so complete....if this was a photo shop....doubt this many much.....this looked like a dude that was wacked with extreme prejudiced intent.

574 I haven't watched an awards show in over a decade until tonight. I had a feeling Gervais was going to go off for some reason but I don't think that was a Quint original thought. There was a feeling out there that something was going to happen and since the room was full of lefties, it was promising.

Like you AOP I don't watch 90 percent of what they put out on tv these days. I usually only get into a show long after it is in syndication and has been vetted as not horrible and lefty.

I think Gervais shocked these people from the beginning and tamped down their desire to go on wild lefty rants Sure there were some by the usual suspects but it was much less than I expected. In fact, some things surprised me about the show. For one they let Tim Allen present an award. His show Last Man Standing is the only modern sitcom I watch.

Also, they gave awards to Chernobyl, 1917, and Joker. And lastly, Deniro did not get on stage to go off on an anti-Trump rant. By Hollyweird standards, I was surprised.

I have watched the US version of The Office over the years. It can sometimes be cringey but likely not worse that most new stuff. Gervais did a cameo on that show too.

I have participated in "re-assemble the parts" activities.

Post-automobile carnage, not post Hellfire.

Same effect though.

Very much the same effect.

And what the pictures can't capture, is the smell. Burnt fuels, oils and tires. And flesh.

Along with something along the lines of what you smell when you gut a deer. But worse.

Difference being though, I prayed over those accident victims. And gave thanks to God for the gift of the meals from those deer.

Sulimani though?

Yeah, I'd dance a jig to celebrate his death, directly atop the slime of his demise.

And sleep like a baby, thereafter.

No regard for the slime of Islam at all. NONE.

576 The Globes are usually the fun awards show, a chance to chill, be Hollywood and get loaded. I dont think they got to do that tonight and that's great. The room felt decidedly small and uncomfirtable all night. I usually walk out of these quickly (it's the wife's thing), but I kinda enjoyed it this time.

579 Finally, before I snooze.

That first photo?

Yeah, it's beautiful.

Some misbegotten yachtsman gave his dinghy a shove, waited till things settled and then took the picture.

What this tells you, is that soon after, that same yachtsman fired up his diesel, retrieved the dink, and then motored off across the windless horizon.

You see a picture like that, and you can be assured of one of three things.

They're gonna proceed under power.

They're gonna proceed by muscle and oar.

They're gonna lie-to, and pray for wind.

But what you can take to the bank?

They AINT gonna be SAILING.

I have not seen almost anything that won, including Chernobyl. I have heard it took some liberties (namely, the shooting the pets thing), but it's part of my childhood so I may have to watch.

Joker is very dark, but worth watching, if only to see Bobby D get shot to death. [I shall concede that I have also heard from cinephiles that The Irishman is excellent.]

1917, I may have to watch. The Great War gets a chapter-treatment in my novel, because it is arguably the most depressing event in history.

Judging by smiles and sly grins if not outright laughs....Mr. Gervais also made some new friends in the audience of the conservative / libertarian bent in Hollywood as well....

Watch the clips of his monologue at Twitchy....they are priceless.

587 I am launching my friend's 39' Star one design sailboat from the estuary docks in Alameda at 2 PM on an outgoing tide....I need to do this now as I have no auxiliary engine on this fairy tale looking boat and the Park Street bridge is hard to my back and a F-up means maybe loosing my mast before the bridge master can raise it. The jib goes up first and it's tack-tack-tack across the narrow strait...and then tacktacktack when a barge comes up my ass before Jack London Square.
Finally out of the estuary and into San Franciso Bay for an afternoon of sailing but always watching the clock to get back into the estuary during slack tide lest I have to try and hit my slip on an incoming tide with the Park Street Bridge dead in my face if I miss.......good times.

she is very different than him no doubt but I guess that is how they set up a lot of the comedy. They are in the eighth season now. They show her foibles though which is interesting. For one she is a bit of a wine hound and she also gets uncomfortable sometimes around people who are different from her.

The thing that hurts the show for me is that the actresses that play the daughters keep leaving. I don't doubt some of this is political pressure.

That happened with Oliver Stone's Wall Street too. Everyone remembers Gordon Gekko but no one cares about Bud Fox. The movie Boiler Room made light of this when the characters spent time reciting Gekko's lines. OF course those guys were crooks too but it made the point that the director doesn't get the final say in which character resonates.

Tim Allen did a stunt (early 90's) on the "Tonight Show" where he drove a Monster Truck over some parked cars in the NBC parking lot in Burbank. I was at St. Joe's next door and some of us wandered out of the ER to watch the fun.
He then climbed into some totally beefed up Mustang and did 2 360's before screaming off of the lot.

It is still jarring to see an actual conservative on a tv sitcom. He let's them take a shot or two at conservatives from time to time and that is fair. But to see a show where a guy dresses like Trump, bashes Pelosi and Biden is pretty unusual. He made a crack on Biden tonight, in the new episode.

There is a reason this show was cancelled but brought back because the fans raised hell.

Speaking of hollywierd, I'm a little flabbergasted right now.
If you didn't know, I'm not much for comic book movies. Modern era, I liked a couple of Xmen movies, that's about it. I'd written off DC comics.
Well, Roku has Batman Begins and Dark Night available, so, eh. I thought, I'll give the first one a look. Watched it. All of it. Likewise Dark Night. My biggest question is how did DC lose out to Marvel? These movies flirt with "excellent" for almost five hours. There's at least one scene that, minus the grown-up edge, feels lifted straight from the TV series.
If you really don't care about these things, give Batman Begins 10 minutes. You might get drawn in.
And of course, Prometheus still sucks.

You are completely right. In the old days, there were distinct limits of decency. Rickles was smart and went right to the edge, but didn't cross it. His targets were hit with sniper-like precision.

Gervais was more like a guy using a bumpstock and spraying all over the place. Because there are no limits of decency any more. Only victims and being offended.

Don't forget, the reboot of LMS was on another network, as well. I find that rare, a property is dropped while still popular, then allowed to go to another network. (I seem to remember it happening once before but I forget the show.) IIRC, the time off before the reboot is the reason why they lost one daughter after the cancellation as she had other projects lined up and couldn't do it.

But is a funny show. It even portrays guns in a favorable light. {GASP}

I really, really don't like super hero movies to the point that last one I saw in a theater was Superman 1 with Christopher Reeve. Having said that, The Dark Night was a very good film. I could see watching other films in the series.

i have also heard that Iron Man is quite good but for some reason cable only shows Iron Man 2. I want to watch it from the beginning if I watch it.

I was the same way, Kestrel. They are pretty grim, but not hopeless. I think the Harvey Dent arc, which gives us Two Face's origin and demise in the second movie, is incredibly black, but mercifully brief. And there's actually some black comic relief by the Joker, on occasion.
The Premise is, Gotham City is so evil, it needs to die. And you get a study of human nature, interestingly turning the whole thing on it's head with the boat traps, which deserve their own post.

Two passenger ferries, loaded with passengers - one ordinary Gothamites, one hardened felons.

Oh, spoilers. Duh.

Jokers conditions are, if one group blows up the other, they live. If neither group murders the other by midnight, they BOTH die. (I forget the formal name for this dilemma).
Inserr tension building scenes.
End game:
Inmates - hulking brute talks, grabs the detonator, and...throws it overboard. His intent all along.
Citizens - similar, but guy can't bring himself to go through with it. Apply God's reasoning regarding sparing cities, and the villians don't have a leg to stand on. (Joker found one righteous man among the felons.)
I thought it was neat.
