If you have ever had a dog, These memes will bring back some memories.

A H/T from our friend Jane D'Oh Naughty puppy.

A Moron with a blog that had a wonderful pet thread.

The question of nature vs. nurture is examined here. Does she think as a kitten or as a dog? Rosie the kitten living with Huskies.

An interesting H/T from Judith. I saw an Idaho license plate today. Never seen one before, I live in New Jersey. It had a dog on it.

I don't believe I've seen a license plate with a pooch either.

Dratts, missed the Christmas cutoff date. Well, hope your holiday was as special as ours. Got so many toys and treats. And we got to see our first snow. It's much more fun than rain. Geddy, Charlie and Bailey. {No name provided}

A belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your Dobbies. They look very merry! Thank you for sharing.

Longtime lurker here. This is Bella, a rescue who came to us 2 Christmases ago. She now thinks that she is the most decorative ornament in our collection.

Well, I don't disagree with Bella, she is a wonderful ornament. To adopt an older dog is a wonderful deed. Hope you folks had a Merry Christmas. Thank you for sharing today.

These are my kitties TJ (Tabby) and Moose (Siamese). TJ was a feral kitten who just showed up and became completely enamored with Moose. My yard has a cat fence, but it evidently is not very good at keeping cats out! TJ could not be kept out of the yard, and began following Moose into the house to eat, but he would not allow any of us to approach him. When it became evident that he wasn't going away, and that he didn't belong to anyone, we trapped him, had him fixed, and began to gentle him. It took some time, since he was a bit old to be easily tamed, but eventually he became a wonderful house cat. - Tony

That is a wonderful story Tony. That's pretty cool that Moose had a groupie! It sounds like TJ's domestication was a chore of love.

You generously posted a picture of my super mutt rescue dog Clover when we got her in June. The Great Dane is my granddog, Mars. She is as sweet as she is big. It isn't unusual for her to smile like she is in this picture with Santa. - Michelle.

My goodness that photo is so sweet. Hope you and the pups had a Merry Christmas. Was Santa able to get up and walk after that pose? We appreciate your submission, thanks.

Schrödinger is the last of 5. People have stopped throwing kittens out at my house. Except for Schrödinger. Found him between the buildings at work. He fit snugly in the palm of my hand. He's not so small now, at his biggest he weighed 30 pounds. The pictures I am sending are how I arrived at his name. He never met a box he didn't like. - Robert

Thank you for all the photos, it was really tough to pick out Schrodinger's photo. He sounds like he lives in a great household. Thanks for sharing.

Long time lurker and repeat contributor. I always wanted a golden
retriever but am too gimpy to do it justice.
So several years ago I settled on a ceramic one. My daughter just lost
her eight year old flatcoat retriever
and replaced her with this beautiful 3 month old English Cream named
Cali. Love the Pet thread. Merry Christmas,Intruder Driver

Well the ceramic retriever is certainly easier to take care of than a real dog. Not as cuddly though. Your daughter's pup is beautiful.

This is Oliver. He is a three-year-old, intact, Royal Standard Poodle. I drove 13 hours round-trip to get him two days before Christmas.
My previous two Standards died one and two years ago respectively of old age. I was ready for a new friend.

A happy healthy and prosperous new year to the horde! - Le Garde Vieux

It certainly didn't take Oliver long to get comfy at his new home. I suspect the house was pretty quiet after your last 2 pals passed. Happy to hear you have a new friend. Thank you for Oliver's story.

Hi MisHum,

JackStraw thought I'd never be able to get a picture of both my dogs with their Christmas hats. Hah! Fat lot he knows. In fact, they liked their hats so much they slept in them. This pic was taken Christmas morning, when they were exhausted from the revelry the night before, and as you can see, it is completely un-retouched.

The big guy in front is Murphy, and pulling up the rear is Whiskey.

Hope you had a very merry Christmas, Best regards, IrishEi

Fantastic dogs who wear their hats quite well. I'm surprised that your dogs sleep on the floor and not on their very own couch. Hope you guys had a wonderful Christmas.

15 That's pretty cool that Moose had a groupie!

It's not unusual for a resident house cat to accept a feral kitten and teach him/her how to adapt to life with humans. The younger the kitten, the easier the process, but given enough time (and a steady supply of cat food, treats, and toys), the young'un usually follows the older cat's example and settles in.

There was a story I remember reading. In it an old lady asked a Priest whether dogs were allowed in Heaven. The Priest said he was not sure. The Old Lady responded that she could never be happy without her little dog. The Priest replied then of course the dog would be allowed, because one thing he could be sure of: You will be happy in Heaven.

Our first golden retriever used to get into the dry bath tub and look around expectantly for someone to turn on the water.

Walking over a small pedestrian bridge in a park I had to hold him back from diving into the water. It was a struggle, because he was a big boy (120 lbs., and very strong).

I still miss him a lot.

78 Wife says no because animals don't have souls.

She's been talking to too many Jesuits. The lineup on the other side of the question includes C.S. Lewis, Martin Luther, Helmut Thielicke, John Paul II, and John Polkinghorne (a professor of mathematical physics as well as an ordained Anglican theologian). She can argue with them if she wishes.

Yes it is. a great way to look at it. I still miss them after 10 and 20 years respectively. Scruffy the cat. Not so much. Little jerk would literally pounce on my face when I was sleeping and start clawing at me. It was a rescue and it didn't seem to like anyone, no matter how kind we were to it. Maybe someone was just plain mean to it and it hated all humans, but the feeling was mutual. I hope he's with someone else in heaven.

I loved the description of dogs in Aslan's country.

Heaven is a new Eden. I don't see why that wouldn't include dogs.

My advice: get TWO dogs. We got our first golden and then later kind of by chance adopted a little Benji look-alike mutt. They kept each other company while we were at work. Dogs are, of course, social animals, so they don't like to be alone, but thrive when they have another pup with them.

123 Saint Francis of Assisi, for our Animal Friends

Heavenly Father, our human ties with our friends of other species is wonderful and special gift from You. We now ask You to grant our special animal companions your Fatherly care and healing power to take away any suffering they have. Give us, their human friends, new understanding of our responsibilities to these creatures of Yours. They have trust in us as we have in You; our souls and theirs are on this earth together to give one another friendship, affection, and caring. Take our heartfelt prayers and fill Your ill or suffering animals with healing Light and strength to overcome whatever weakness of body they have.

(Here mention the names of the animals needing prayer).

Your goodness is turned upon every living thing and Your grace flows to all Your creatures. From our souls to theirs goodness flows, touching each of us with the reflection of Your love. Grant to our special animal companions long and healthy lives. Give them good relationships with us, and if You see fit to take them from us, help us to understand that they are not gone from us, but only drawing closer to You. Grant our prayer through the intercession of good St. Francis of Assisi, who honored You through all Your creatures. Give him the power to watch over our animal friends until they are safely with You in eternity, where we someday hope to join them in giving You honor forever. Amen.

(You can make this a Novena for a sick pet, by praying this prayer for 9 consecutive days)

Problems can arise, though, if the dog swallows part or all of whatever it has destroyed. The last time I had to take one of my cats to the local animal hospital for emergency diagnosis (she wasn't eating, which can be a danger sign in a cat; fortunately, it turned out to be only a minor digestive upset), a couple came into the waiting room with a dog that had eaten the wife's underwear while she was taking a shower. The emergency vet took an x-ray, tried several maneuvers to get the dog to bring up the underwear, and ended up having to keep the dog overnight to be sure all the cloth had been removed. At least there was no lasting harm to the dog.

152 Will our old pets be in heaven? ... Discuss.

Since Scripture does not speak to the issue directly, no one can say with certainty either way. And as sweet as the thought that we might be reunited with beloved pets is, the attitude that "I couldn't be happy without them" is deeply troubling to me. Heaven is reunion with God. If we have a right comprehension of what that means, how inexpressibly marvelous that will be, I think we will realize that the presence or absence of our pets will be meaningless in comparison. Do any of us really believe that, standing in the presence of God Himself, united to the glorified Christ, we'll have any thought of anyone we've left behind, either human or animal? If so, I fear we've identified an idol.

I've had some wonderful dogs. Yes, I'd love to see them again. But I really believe that in heaven, they'll be the very last thing on my mind.

Not to mention the hole she ate in the beautiful homemade quilt my aunt made me. Thankfully, I found a Methodist quilting circle and they repaired it. Kind of.

She was a good dog, and I still miss her.

159 Speaking of pets. Time to wake Chewy from her slumber to go take a walk in the woods before the sun goes down. Always takes longer because we have a heat wave of 29 today so she takes her sweet time, which is good. All kind of things to be sniffed, chased etc. She loves to bound into the piles of snow. Be well all.

Probably the better theological take on the question. We perceive Heaven in human terms: walking around, reuniting with loved ones (which is where the dogs come in), learning wonderful things we always wondered about. It ignores the more... transcendental aspect of Heaven.

I am appreciative of this information, but was settling in with a cup of delicious coffee, reading the pet thread to get my mind off of the ongoing story that about half of the US population going insane over, with made up facts and living in an alternative reality.

And poof, the story is back.

That's why the OT after 100 posts rule exists.

But then again, there are rules against laundering millions of dollars through Ukraine to kids of Congresspeople, and it appears that rule isn't followed, either.

And MisHum, another fantastic pet thread! Those dobermans with their butts in the snow pic looks like it is ripe to be turned into some kind of meme.

Another wet Seattle day, low to mid '40's, but the skiiers up in the mountains have YeeHaa!!! skiing weather and conditions today.

One of my bulldogs loves a kiddie pool. We leave it out in the winter, because it collects rainwater, and they both like to drink the cold outside water.

Last night, after a long walk, I unleashed Tank and he headed for the pool for a cold drink. In went his face, then his front paws, and before I could stop him, plopped his whole self in! 45 degrees out.

I guess he was hot!

Yep. That's the only way to make the Middle East work. dictators and tyrants is all those people will respond to. Democracy is wasted on them as we have seen in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

We don't need anything from there anymore and we should just pull completely out of there and let them sort themselves out. If they get too frisky we can always pop a MOAB or two to calm them down.
