The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg
"After the House voted in favor of the articles of impeachment, do you realize there were people who thought that this meant that trump was no longer president?

"It's true. Where I live, they actually had a celebratory protest at the usual location where all of the other 'F* Trump' protests were held, and these idiots were jumping up and down, tooting little horns, and waving signs that proclaimed how great it was that the Bad Orange Man was finally gone.

"And this is a college town. Which should be full of smart people, or so they keep telling us, what with all of the perfessers and academic geniuses and gender studies majors boosting our collective IQ up into the stratosphere.

"So with all of our rocket scientists, you'd think that at least some of them would have taken a basic civics class in high school, so they would know at least something about the impeachment process.

"But no, apparently nobody around here has. And *we're* supposed to be the ones who are dumb.

"And does anybody believe that Pelosi is going to formally hand off the articles of impeachment to the Senate? She's already making a bunch of excuses why she might not, I mean, essentially, she won't do it unless she is guaranteed a guilty verdict. That's what all of her demands boil down to.

"But with their go/no-go waffling on impeachment, it is becoming clear that the progressives have hollowed out the impeachment process and are now wearing its skin and demanding respect. That is, they're insisting that the House with Pelosi sitting on the articles is solemn and momentous. They get mad when you point out that they've reduced it to just another species of political theater.

"It doesn't mean anything if they don't do anything with it. The House vote, as it stands, is just an 'Orange Man bad!' hissy fit.

"And those dimwits who were celebrating because they think Donald Trump is no longer in office? They're in for the mother of all hangovers."

92 Anybody watching TCM today? They are showing three versions of Show Boat one after the other - the 1929, 1936 and 1951 versions.

I watched most of the 1929 version, with Laura LaPlante as Magnolia and Joseph Schildkraut as Ravenal. Part of the movie was shot as a talkie, and it was funny to hear Schildkraut - who is supposed to be playing a suave Southern gambler - speak in an Erich von Stroheim voice.

This isn't from the movie, but here's a pic of LaPlante:

https://tinyurl.com/ve3oswa

Most of her career was done in the silent era. She was a popular presence in the talkies, with good looks and an appealing voice, but there were so many new "stars" at the time that her career fizzled away, as audiences wanted new faces (and voices) on the screen.

When Myrna Loy considered retiring from The Thin Man series, LaPlante was contacted as a replacement, but Loy decided to stay on and that was basically the end of LaPlante's career.

They've been doing that all month, before Christmas they did both Ben Hur's, and I was surprised that the silent one was much more focused on the political situation than the later one was. (they made the right choice cutting most of that out in the second script, it wasn't what people wanted to see)

There's also two versions of "Three Godfathers", the later one a well known John Wayne vehicle. I found the earlier version to be a much better movie, overall. Wayne's character was supposed to die, but they changed that ending because Wayne was too big a star. The original ending was better.

348 Mankiewicz the commie isn't fit to shine Robert Osborne's shoes. I do kind of like the Australian chick, though.

--

Mank will always be, to me, an abject idiot. I will never forget the night of the Young Smirks meltdown when Cankles lost. Yes, it was a beauty to behold and savor, but Mankiewicz said at one point, and I pretty much quote, "the Founding Fathers weren't so great. They're all dead and had slaves." Dude was dead to me after that, insofar as I see him on TCM.

Alicia Malone is a beautiful girl, but I think she's a mad-as-a-hatter feminist. I could be wrong on that, but I think I saw that somewhere.

349 Greetings:

Re: Olivia Hussey

So, it's 1969 and I'm taking my malaria break in the hospital at Cam Ranh Bay where the medical folks have set up an amphitheater in the sand dunes to watch movies at night.

So, what movie do these brill-yentos pick to show but Zaferelli's version of Sheakespere's "Romeo and Juliet" starring the aforementioned young actress. A hundred or two young men, by themselves, 10,000 miles from home and/or love and they show a movie in the weirdest English they ever heard.

So, after about 15 minutes of beer cans a-popping and various gurgling sounds, the boys get down to what they know better and start themselves s "My Division is better than your Mother's" brawl.

A good time was had by many.

350 I want a fan of Squirt soda. So much more satisfying than Ball Punch.

351 That must be the Penguin Pale Dry Ginger Ale from Frank Zappa's Penguin In Bondage. It all makes sense now.

353 I tracked down the "HE'S IMPEACHED" twits. Strangely, those particular tweets have gone missing. One twit, is an ACLUer.

354 AM I the only one that is trying to decide which liquor goes with each vintage soda?

Vodka ftw. And since Trump is a Russian stooge, even better.

She doesn't lurk here. I've tried to explain what happened multiple times but I guess only Bandersmith read it.

No, I read it too. And as a PSA, I looked for Clarice's link to the HQ, and noticed its absence.

That didn't stop me from linking Ms. Feldmen's article though.

MP4 deserves the exposure.

155 What, no love for Shasta diet soda (and all of the other available "flavors")?

No matter how they tried, NONE of their diet drinks tasted good.

Recently declassified papers from the Commerce Department confirmed the longstanding rumor that Diet Shasta sodas were the first trial to dispose of, er, market, Red China's miracle good-for-everything chemical, melamine!
