Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The New York Times Discovers a New Crisis: Men Don't Want to See New "Little Women" Movie, and That's Not OkayFrom the New York Times, as quoted by Twitchy:
Well, it just so happens that I have the perfect solution to this crisis -- a solution proposed and enforced by the Social Justice Warriors currently complaining that men don't want to see movies made for women. In the past six or so years, whenever Social Justice Warriors and feminists decided that there aren't "enough women" going to see male-starring action movies, the SJWs/feminists always prescribed the same cure: that we entice women by putting more women into the movies. Make 007 a woman. Make the Ghostbusters all-female. Make the hero in five of the six Disney Star Wars movies a progressive white woman. So, applying this same solution to "Little Women" -- if the producers of the film wanted men to come, they should have offered more Male Representation in their films, and perhaps have gender-bent most of the female characters to male? See, if women don't See Themselves on the Screen, they're not being represented, and a great crime is being committed. So why aren't people outraged that Men Can't See Themselves on Screen in Little Women? Also, the SJWs always demand more "diversity" in casting. That is both good for business and a necessary virtue signal, they tell us. So I need to know: Why are there not more black women in Little Women? Where are the transwomen, for that matter? Or is it that leftwing feminist white women are excluded from the same demands of Gender and Racial Representation they impose on all male-skewing entertainments? By the way: I don't want any women to think I actually want Little Women to be turned into a mixed-race British version of the Dukes of Hazzard. I think women should be entitled to have the sorts of entertainments that appeal to them, without being adulterated and distorted by bizarre racial-and-gender bean-counting identity politics. I'm just asking: Why can't men have the same thing? I also hope I haven't offended anyone by speaking of white women feminists. Note the "Feminists" at the end. I like white women, obviously. But White Women Feminists are playing a devious and cynical game in always championing diversity for others, while branding themselves as "diverse" (despite being white, and despite being women, who are the majority of the population) and then just taking most of the Diversity Slots they themselves demanded. A lot of nonwhite feminists notice this double game, too, and criticize White Women Feminists for using the rhetoric of diversity to get quotas and set-asides for themselves. None of that applies to white women (or any other women) who are not feminists, of course. It's just White Women Feminists, specifically, who use a lot of black faces in their PR advertisements for diversity, and then fill up the top slots with their own white faces. Louisa May Alcott actually DID write a "Little Men" book too. It would be interesting to see anyone make a film out of that. You notice who isn't complaining about this sort of thing? Hallmark Channel, that's who. Know why? Because they make a product that sells VERY well to their target demographic, and don't care at all if men don't watch it, which they don't.

One of the funny ironies is that Greta Gerwig, the writer/director, probably only became a filmmaker because, as an actor in New York, she started having an affair with Noah Baumbach, an independent filmmaker with several films to his name at the time.
She parlayed that into her first directorial feature, Frances Ha (which is pretty good, by the way), then moved to Lady Bird and then this. Feminism! Posted by: TheJamesMadison, source of random movie thoughts at December 27, 2019 05:34 PM (zZbCU) 16

Posted by: Soothsayer, very senile at December 27, 2019 05:35 PM (qDoHj) ========== From what I understand, this version of Little Women is actually doing really good for the type of movie it is. It's doing solid business, and then The New York Times seems all butthurt because it's not doing the kind of business that male-centric films tend to do. I guess the real complaint is that the wider culture isn't validating this writer's cinematic preferences at the level they wish. Best version of Little Women was the one with Winona
Ryder, but it really is a chick flick and it's garbage to try to make any men feel bad about not seeing it. So when she said that she wanted to go see Little Women on Christmas afternoon, I said that I'd go too. I realize that my Man Card was in jeopardy, but making amends with the Mrs. looked like a good move. I HATED the movie. Hated it, hated it , hated it. And on top of the stupid movie, I had to endure Meryl Streep (whose last Oscar was for Most Overrated Actress EV-AR), and that twit Emma Watson (who now claims that she is "self-partnered" instead of single). You know, the many worlds theory story in the side bar.
For some reason I have been thinking about that a lot lately. It has not been going especially well for me as that theory goes. For some reason it occurred to me that although I am perfectly happy and much happier than I have reason to expect that somewhere out there there is a guy that has everything that I have AND a wife who has decided that the very best present she could give me was Megan Fox. Not just any Megan Fox mind you but the Megan Fox who believed it was the highest and best purpose of her existence to give me blowjobs while I am working 14 hour days and did not have the fucked up thumb. The problem with this is that, happy as I am that is not going to happen here. There is nothing anyone can do about her fucked up thumb. The thing that pisses me off though is that because of the many worlds theory, the fact that I had that thought means that somewhere in some other universe that me now exists and is getting his umpteenth blowjob of the day. And that is in a universe where American Pie never has and never will exist! And there is nothing I can do about it. I had the thought and cannot unthink it so that cocksucker is going to be happily married to a wonderful woman where it is ok for him to get non-stop blowjobs in a way that would make Les Moonves envious - even if I were to think about him not getting them anymore, because that would mean that there was another universe where that same me was getting nonstop blowjobs, with social and wife approval ,until they stopped fro some reason that he cannot fathom. Not sure what I am going to do about this. Probably best to have a drink and go play tennis and forget the entire thing. Posted by: not so at December 27, 2019 06:10 PM (HALdu) 275

Noted the other day an article about how women are annoyed that men are showing up at a venue that was supposed to be women only. (they couldn't do that because of the laws)
They complained about why the men wanted to intrude where they weren't wanted and how the women now felt that they couldn't relax and be as comfortable as they were before the men showed up. (forced their way in was the usage but that's of course a lie) Sounds so much like 50 years ago when women started suing mens clubs and others over having men only policies. I'd happily see Little Women. Especially if the wife asked me to go. Would it be my first choice for a night's entertainment? Of course not. But I could watch it and be mildly amused, and of course be happy that she is happy.
See, this is the bullshit these feminists don't understand, men and women often take pleasure in simply making each other happy. It's called team building. We also each specialize in certain problem solving areas - I deal with cars, plumbing, electricity, and home maintenance, she deals with kids, animals, cooking, and neighbors. We split finances - she handles day to day bills, I handle big purchases, investments, and loans. It doesn't matter how you split it up, as long as you each play to your strengths. My wife will paint and do dry wall, I do the framing and roofing. She's detailed oriented, I'm more get er' done. Together were are fucking unstoppable at almost any challenge. I'm sure there are a number of different ways to spice it up, like "Terminator: Little Women", where one of the March sisters is the ancestor of Sarah Conner and a Terminator is sent back to 19th Century to kill her. And OT/PT, Schlichter's wrong about Americans just tolerating denial of rights. Happens all the time. There are even "constitutionally blessed" absurd abominations that are institutionalized, like affirmative action in all forms. The list is long and distinguished. A bit of push-back here and there is nice, but it's far from a general pattern. And the judiciary's dismantlement of the constitution, in many respects, remains intact, and expanding. This is a feature not a bug. Ask me how I know. I find that those yelling the loudest about Constitutional Rights have never personally (not as a lawyer) been through the many year courtroom warzone to have those rights recognized and upheld. When I was about 10 or so my Mother sent me on a trip with my Dad, he was a raging alcoholic and stopped frequently at wayside taverns often leaving me in the car. She packed with me 2 books, Little Men & Little Women. By the time I got through with them I was hooked.
When I got home I asked Mom if she had any more books. She introduced me to Tom Sawyer and his friend Huckleberry also books like To kill a Mockingbird and many many more. I've been on a life's journey of passionate reading and it started with Louisa May Alcott. Of course my Dad's Value Rite Vodka played its part too. Sorry Oregon Muse -- Dame Dench has played lots of grim & grisly aunties, but never in Little Women, not even on TV.
Angela Lansbury was the last BBC Auntie M -- not bad at all -- in the version where Ethan Hawke's daughter played Jo. JD's last Auntie turn was Darcy's Lady Catherine in Pride and Prejudice. Posted by: Shopgirl #PatrickIsMahomesie at December 27, 2019 08:49 PM (Edfwc) 483

Your average man is not into the novels of Louisa Ingalls Austen, or whatever the hell her name is, and that's okay.
I also don't think it's a conspiracy or a crime against humanity that your average woman isn't into Sylvester Stallone movies. Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler at December 28, 2019 01:55 AM (H3MF8) Posted by: saf at December 28, 2019 07:23 AM (5IHGB) 490

As a little girl, reading the Little House on the Prairie series ruined
me for Little Women. There is such a stark contrast to the Little House books, where the family is often grateful to share a can of peaches on a cold winter's night, that the perpetual whining about the family's loss of station in Little Women the book gets very tiresome. For example, I quit reading after the part of the book when Meg marries a poor schoolteacher and as a newly-wed gets pressured by a rich and bitchy friend (who knows how poor Meg is) into buying a bolt of silk or some shit that costs like her husband's entire month's salary. I seem to recall there's a lot of whining and crying and anguish about how poor they are before Meg's asshole friend agrees to buy the length of silk back from her so she doesn't have to tell her loving husband that his poverty is shameful to her and what an ungrateful dick she is for agreeing to marry him knowing how poor he is. That's not the only chapter like that in the book either, there's some other part about one of the other girls dying of shame because she gets seen buying a lobster (which was poor people food back then). I get that Little Women is sorta fiction (some of it's loosely based on the Alcott family), but it just was hard to take seriously Jo's moaning about how hard it is to become an author when you contrast to Laura Ingalls Wilder's first years of marriage in which she and her husband lose a child, catch life-long debilitating diseases, and end up losing their house to fire and their farm to creditors. For what it's worth, in the novel, Jo is a girl and Laurie is a boy. That's about as gender bending as the mid-nineteenth century gets.
