Stocks Rise For Fourth Straight Day, to New Record Highs

Apart from the general strength of the Trump economy, which, as Alexandria Donkey-Chompers sagely instructs is, is strong only because people are working seventeen jobs each, the phase one trade deal is resolving uncertainties.

"This has been the thing that, personally, I've been looking for all year," said Kim Forrest, founder of Bokeh Capital, referring to the trade agreement. "Increased trade is going to allow companies to start spending again on capital expenditures. That had been frozen, and most of most of those are technology purchases."

...

"This should put to rest for the time being the ‘trade war’ volatility factor in markets, which has become a dominant theme over the past year and a half," said Eleanor Olcott, China policy analyst at TS Lombard, in a note. "This brief interlude of calm for the China-US relationship presents some investment opportunities."

The economy's doing so well that Kurt The Soros Comment Troll actually landed a higher-paying job as second assistant fluffer to the guy giving hand-jays under the bridge.

Whether trolling comments sections or jerking off transients, Kurt's still fundamentally in the same game -- volume.

The markets are so bullish that some fear a "melt-up." I guess a rapid escalation of stock prices.

The problem with that is that such an event usually heralds the end of a bull market.

It is important to note that the a so-called melt-up is considered by market pundits as the end phase of an asset bubble and is usually, but not always, followed by a significant downturn in stock values. Strategists have predicted melt-ups a number of times over the past 18 months, with concerns growing about U.S. economic growth in its record-setting 11th year of expansion, supporting fears that an economic and stock-market pullback are inevitable.

43 16, The market crashed in 87 because of the fundamental shift that the 86 tax reform bill caused in certain stocks. The 90-91 recession was shallow but made worse by Desert Shield/Storm and high oil prices.

If the U.S. repatriates a lot of its manufacturing via the MCA etc. shifting to individuals in the U.S. doing better as they are so far, it is possible that we have something like the 60's boom and if we avoid a war, we could have more good things to come.

Obama's recovery was tepid and not really conducive to increased investment in the U.S. economy. Overall, labor shortages that pull up wages are better than artificially trying to spike wages through unions or government actions.

There was no recovery.

Obama added $10 trillion to national debt. GDP grew by $6 trillion during the same period.

The historic levels of borrowing hid the economic stagnation. The Fed was basically "coding" the patient for eight years to prevent brain death.

Now the old boy's actually up and moving around. Weird how taking the government's foot off his throat helped facilitate that.

No, this run up is due to the end of 8 years of stagnate growth during the Obama years that this increase would have or should have been spread over that time that is, well, gurgled in place. Listen up, cuz there WILL BE a quiz:

There IS an asset bubble right now, but it is NOT in U.S. equities (stocks). It's in U.S. govt paper (30 year bonds, etc). Foreign investors have PILED INTO those, because they get near zero real return on foreign govt bonds. This is known!

So what?

The "bleed up" scare is misplaced. Equities can still appreciate without the risk of a dotcom-style bubble.

99 We have been having a roaring economy...with impeachment, Brexit, trade wars, USMCA stalled, mid-east wars, budget deficits, etc.

What the heck happens when some or all of those problems go...away?

4% growth, that is what happens.

Which doesn't sound like much, given other countries are growing rapidly at a 5-8% clip. BUT we are a $20 trillion economy, 25% of the total economy of planet Earth. Even a small inch up in growth rate yields enormous amounts of money. 1% growth yields $200 billion each year. Its staggering what a little faster growth can do to the U.S. economy. And that growth is compounded each year. A $21 trillion in 2021. $22 trillion in 2022.

172 125 Boswell,

From what I understood, Powell wanted the judge to dismiss the case rather than extend Flynn's legal jeopardy through a trial (and risk having his son indicted --believe it was FARA related issues). A dismissal would have meant double jeopardy applied and Flynn could not be retried.

Not sure if a plea agreement can now be revoked by Powell or not but I believe that it can but it would expose Flynn to a trial. Given the circumstances, I doubt that Sullivan would be able to preside due to inflammatory comments made by him regarding Flynn in open court. Thus, it could simply be a way for Sullivan to pass the hot potato to another judge if Flynn can decide to withdraw his plea agreement.

178 This Flynn case decision is truly an outrage - in an era when, sadly, one has to meet a fairly high bar for actual outrage.

Game isn't over, but most experienced observers claim it is close, with withdrawal of plea only option - and that's not up only to Flynn and his team, apparently judge must allow.

Not sure whether some of the "extra" abuses that went along with what is almost certainly the main attraction of altering evidence and lying all over the place, have been addressed. Like the non-consentable conflict the prosecution created and [improperly] ignored for Flynn's first defense team.

Is Sullivan betting [against all known and likely evidence] that Flynn's case was not beyond tainted - that it might be one of the most outrageous festivals of misconduct, to include criminal, in modern American history?

I have lost most trust in our legal system after trying to follow their shenanigans over the last few years.

I thought like you forever, but after the last few years of FISA judges being made fools of in public and keeping quiet about it, has driven my feelings this way.

These FISA judges are smart people, and know they were lied to, and after over two years of public snark, have ignored it. Completely ignored being lied to and later being repeatedly called out in public.

Which leads me into the conclusion they were actually in on the scam. They were a part of it. Nobody is this stupid and unaware. Not even street people.

And the judge that ran Roger Stone's trial was a partisan hack of the worst kind.

Now, Mannafort was crooked, but would have never been found out if not for the unfortunate decision to play in the corrupt Ukraine, where it is looking like the place for Democrat graft extraordinaire. IMO he got busted and railroaded because he was trying to dip his beek in the Democrat graft pool.

Now this judge Sullivan, which I had hope for. I'll keep my final judgement powder dry until the end, but it is looking like just another corrupt federal judge, sad to say.

With this many corrupt judges, combined with a corrupt, lying and censoring press, honest people are effed.

Effed.

258 Simple solution - ban defined benefit pensions forever. Public and private. These fucking state pensions - make them all pay as you go.

Make everything a defined contribution.

259 If you predict something a number of times in the past 18 months and it doesn't become true, you aren't a very good strategist.

In a sane world, you'd be looking for a new job.

262 I can absolutely guarantee you that the economy is gangbusters when Hollywood can reasonably anticipate a profit from a remake of Top Gun.

265 I posit that this is a poor time to chase capital gains, i.e., growth stocks.
Posted by: mnw at December 16, 2019 08:13 PM (Cssks)

The idea that pursuing growth stock during a stock market bull session is insane, but I get that that may depend on where you are in life...retired and 70? You should own cash and little property. 45 and looking to build a nest egg? Ride this puppy up for as long as you can. It's no bubble. Its built upon sound economic principles of lessened government regulation, a booming energy industry, and lower corporate tax liabilities. These are called fundamentals in my industry...hardened proof of continued gains. Once the 2020 political season is well underway, say June/July of next year, and if the election tea leaves become murky, you can pull back to more secure holdings, but if impeachment can't budge this market, nothing is going to for a good half year.
