The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

We live in wondrous times, and in spite of the political and social stupidity of a large swath of people across the globe, our lives are better than ever, or at least we have the possibility of that condition.

Science has given us medical breakthroughs that are unbelievable; robotic surgery, gene-therapy for previously deadly cancers, the ability to save premature babies, new wonder drugs and thousands of other marvels that were unimaginable even a generation or two ago.

The technology of communication is quite simply magical! We have computers in our pockets (some people even use them as phones!) and our cars and in our refrigerators (yeah...I don't like that one) that are connected to a world-wide network that is seamless except for political manipulation.

Our transportation is more reliable and safer than ever, and unbelievably inexpensive. What once was an expensive cross-country flight in the 1980s has dropped in price by 50% when adjusted for inflation. Fuel to run our cars and heat our homes is abundant and cleaner than ever. Our environment is much, much cleaner than it was when we were kids, in spite of the caterwauling from the lunatic left.

Food is safe and abundant and better than ever, courtesy of GMOs and the miracle of free markets. We could feed the world with ease were it not for those aforementioned political manipulations.

We are left with complaining (correctly) that some consumer products are built without the legendary American robustness that our parents came to expect. Wow...life is pretty good if we need to complain about our dishwashers and washing machines and refrigerators (that make ice for us while we sleep!).

No...my name isn't Pollyanna Brown's Dildo. Our job is to protect the fruits of 2,500 years of Western culture from the depredations of those pesky political manipulations, and that means progressivism or socialism or leftism or whatever convenient shorthand we use to describe the pinch-faced scolds of the Left, who never saw a freedom they didn't want curtailed or a new technology they didn't want to control and tax or a dissident they didn't want imprisoned, or worse.

It's an existential fight, but it isn't a new one. We have been in this battle for a very long time, and it will still be going long after we are gone, so....enjoy the festivities of an American Christmas week and be confident that we can get back to running around with our hair on fire...but after New Years!

30 Good observations, CBD.

I'll add this:

Thanks to nuclear weapons, we are in the longest peace between Great Powers since the Treaty of Westphalia ended the 30 Years War.

Yesterday, I was playing a game in which the ship I was in was one of the units in the game. Focuses your mind on how bloody a Great Powers War would be. We dodged that bullet, thanks to many people serving as deterrence, and nuclear weapons.

The true rulers of this country would rather see it reduced to ash than give up their power and control, and they have weapons which allow them to make that happen. So one can't be too optimistic about things.

On fridges.

Fridges now use 410 for refridgerant. It runs about 15-20% higher pressures than R22, making it harder on condensors and compressors.

Also.... to help meet the Federally mandated efficiency requirements, new fridges never decompress so as to avoid the ramp up in refridgerant compression. So..... not only is the operating pressure 15-20% higher, components must START under full pressure, making it even harder on components.

Same is true on vehicle and home AC's.

Christmas movie recommendation, if one is tired of the usual:

Remember the Night, starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred McMurray. Made in 1940, a remarkably mature and touching story of how a shoplifter and prosecutor cross paths for the holidays.

Once you get past the contrivance that brings them together, it's a story filled with realism and depth, often due to what it doesn't say, as much as what it does.

Needless to say, they don't make 'em like that anymore.

73 Back to Hunter Biden - I don't know Arkansas law on child support but they have a support calculator, likely they have a formula that is based on the incomes of both parents, and percentage of custody.

With Biden at zero income (supposedly) he is going to take the position that he has to pay no child support - or probably there is some minimum like $200 a month that a non-custodial parent would pay without an income.

Likely the judge is going to be hot at someone living in the Hollywood Hills claiming that. But, the judge may also be a deep-dyed Democrat and order no child support, and the child will become collateral damage in the War on Trump.

Vic yes and no. They will set the support amount based on income. Once it is set, you've got to pay whether you have the money or not. Being unemployed is no excuse.

Now, you can go back to court and argue for a new amount if you lose your job but 1 you can't do that until you have lost your job, and then you have to get into court, and there is no retroactivity - so if it takes months to get into court, then you are stuck.

94 Yes CBD we do live in wondrous times. However I think that technology has taken something from us and that is the ability to communicate.

I truly think we have lost something when people would rather tear someone down because they do not think or feel like they do and behind the anonymity of the internet say things to people that I bet they would not say to the person face to face.

That's my 2 cents.

95 Now, you can go back to court and argue for a new amount if you lose your job but 1 you can't do that until you have lost your job, and then you have to get into court, and there is no retroactivity - so if it takes months to get into court, then you are stuck.

Posted by: pep

*********

I think not. Life expectancy is a population statistic and preventing death early in life has a disproportionate impact on life expectancy.

I think that the great strides in public health and treatment of infectious disease early in the 1900's resulted in tremendous rise in population life expectancy as a statistical measure. Modern innovations in therapeutics have nibbled away at the margins.

But even with modern technological advances the rate of increase in life expectancy has slowed to a crawl. The effects of time, wear and tear and general aging are unavoidable, not to mention externally inflicted causes of death (homicide, accidents, etc) are part of the human condition.

While we (as a group) may live longer, and while individuals may enjoy better health in whatever lifespan they have, we will not become immortal.

Mathematically speaking there is probably an upper limit and further gains in life expectancy will be asymptotic.

138 Our job is to protect the fruits of 2,500 years of Western culture from the depredations of those pesky political manipulations

A large portion of our political problems arises from the fact that many people consider America's affluence to be a given - that no matter what the country does, that young Leftists will still be able to have smartphones, computer laptops, and take European trips; and the "poor" will still have abundant food, indoor plumbing, and wide-screen TV's.

They can't conceive that anything they support politically might take all that away.

One analogy is Argentina, which was as rich as a European country in 1900, and was turned into a Third-World basket case under the socialist policies of Juan and Evita Peron.

Cuba was the richest country in Latin America, until Castro took over.

It can happen here, if we let it.

Ah, but you said "in the not too distant future."

I think gene manipulation at the cellular level in multiple organs with controllable/predictable results is a long way off. And there is more to aging than just telomere length. DNA replication in human cells is and always will be susceptible to missense and nonsense codon errors. By the time these errors are detected, damage will have occurred.

And "Plug and Play" organ replacement, if even logistically possible, does not provide for replacing a broken human spirit, the will to live.

158 Looking at the Arkansas child support guidance charts, the minimum child support amount is $167 a month for a single child - and that is someone whose income is $500/month (or actually whose net income difference - making $500/month more than the other parent).

The maximum on the charts is with a $5000/month difference in income - and that amount is $691/month.

Baby momma's lawyer is likely arguing that he should pay an amount more than the $691/mo, which means the courts have to get involved in the determination.

What will go into that determination is also the amount of alimony and child support he is already paying - debts from the divorce from his first wife are part of his argument for why he can't pay for the stripper baby.

His divorce from his first wife would have been while he was getting paid a ton from Burisma and China and that - so he likely does have a great big alimony/child support bill there, plus he no doubt paid attorneys a shit ton of money. And he is having to pay attorney's more trying to get those amounts adjusted down.

I am not trying to make him sympathetic, but all those things are happening.

While he is sitting in a $2.5M house that he bought this year in the Hollywood Hills.

163 The Pogues "Body of an American" was featured on The Wire for a couple of the wakes. Another great song. And whoever mentioned it above, you're right. I'm not sure how Shane MacGowan is still alive either.

164 I saw the Pogues in 1986ish.

If I didn't already know all of the songs I wouldn't have understood a word coming out of Shane's mouth.

165 Well that's nice. Circuit board out in the garage door opener. Merry Christmas to me. At least the guy had one on his truck.

166 Dear Mr Dildo,

I'm a little late, but thank you for the El Greco. That was a nice Christmas present.

Sincerely,
Island Monster

167 Our job is to protect the fruits of 2,500 years of Western culture from the depredations of those pesky political manipulations

A large portion of our political problems arises from the fact that
many people consider America's affluence to be a given - that no matter
what the country does, that young Leftists will still be able to have
smartphones, computer laptops, and take European trips; and the "poor"
will still have abundant food, indoor plumbing, and wide-screen TV's.

They can't conceive that anything they support politically might take all that away.

One analogy is Argentina, which was as rich as a European country in
1900, and was turned into a Third-World basket case under the socialist
policies of Juan and Evita Peron.

Cuba was the richest country in Latin America, until Castro took over.

It can happen here, if we let it.

Or Venezuela in the 2000s. It can happen here and it can happen in the blink of an eye. Also lots of rich people are working very hard on it happening here.

171 I had someone on twitter angrily tell me that Nazis could not have been socialist because they were racist. They have no idea what they are talking about

All racists are socialist.
Ultimately all socialist will be racist.

172 Always the remarks about dildos somehow being a bad thing. I mean I do not understand the darn things but my ex wives seemed to like them a bunch. I have no idea why
