Another Perspective On China: Donald Trump Seems To Know What He Is Doing

Our betters along the Acela corridor think that it is axiomatic that President Trump has mishandled our relationship with China, and it is only a matter of time before it blows up in our faces. Eventually we will be able to return to the status quo, courtesy of the Deep StateTM. You know...that wonderful time when China could steal our trade and military secrets at will (thank you Senator Feinstein!), dump consumer products on our shores to destroy our manufacturing base, murder their citizens, and bully the rest of the world.

The Pressure on China

Xi's incompetence is manifest. The major task of the Chinese president is to handle the American president, and Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton were handled. He failed to bring Donald Trump under control with promises of future meetings and postponed studies. As a result, China is in a trade war with its largest customer. In addition, quite apart from the trade issue, the Chinese financial system is unstable and growth is slowing. Now, Hong Kong is out of control, and the global talk is of Chinese concentration camps. This is not what was expected from Xi.
The article, which is absolutely worth a read, goes on to discuss a recent leak of...
government documents describing in detail a broad Chinese assault that has been underway for several years on the ethnic minority Uighur community in the western province of Xinjiang. The documents gave detailed accounts of massive detention camps for "retraining" purposes and the separation of families on a scale that is startling even for China. Beijing clearly wants to break the back of Islam in the province.
Amazing that a leak of this import was almost universally ignored or downplayed by the media in America. If I weren't more trusting of the Fourth Estate I would think that they have some ulterior motive, such as protecting China.

President Trump signed two bills criticizing China for its treatment of the demonstrators in Hong Kong, which seems counterproductive if his goal is to protect American corporations that stand to make huge profits in mainland China. For a man who is by all accounts indistinguishable from Adolph Hitler he seems to be focusing on supporting freedom and liberty to a startling extent.

8 "which seems counterproductive if his goal is to protect American corporations that stand to make huge profits in mainland China"

Doesn't have to be an altruistic human rights move on Trump's part. Trump wants companies investing in the US. If going after China's human rights record prompts the Chinese to take it out on American businesses, this serves that purpose as they will be less likely to invest there.

Yeah, no. They're past that now. Sure, they still have lots of big problems, but they've moved smartly up the value chain. It used to be that most of the Chinese grad students and postdocs tried desperately to stay here. Now, many of them return home, and guess what they take with them.
America can't simply sit on its hands and expect everything to work out swimmingly.

13 I am no China hand, but it seems to me that Emperor Xi has his subjects under a tight yoke. The social-credit system means the only Chinese we hear, are the Chinese who support an eradication of Islam from within China's borders.

Also those Chinese support the crackdown on Hong Kong, which port they don't even need anymore. Hong Kong used to be like New York if it were (still) a British Loyalist port. Now it's more like Boston - Important For Historical Purposes and not much else. Maybe even like Salem.

Remember how the Chinese reacted in horror when this government gunned down three thousand 'Murrkan flag-waving fellow citizens in Tiannanmen? No, me neither.

15 They killed off their local hogs, and are in a trade war with the biggest grocer on the planet. Plus they want to stamp out their access to global banking (Hong Kong).

Seems Xi caught the brain worm that afflicted Clinton / Bush/ Obama.

Posted by: henry at December 01, 2019 12:27 PM (J3Rfi)

16 I suspect the big reveal will come soon. There are two possibilities. One, Xi has the goods and is holding out on a trade agreement, seeking the weakest time for Trump to agree to a deal, or the reverse, and Trump is in control and seeking the strongest/best time to make a deal.

I'm guessing Trump is holding the cards. Opinions regarding the condition of the economy for election purposes are formed about 6 months prior to the vote. So, for Trump's re election, an early spring time deal leaving time for the markets to run up and companies to start hiring and spending to goose the economy would be ideal.

We'll know in the next six months who has held the cards. If I have to guess, I think Trump and his negotiators took some positions they knew the Chinese would never agree to, like dropping the belt and road initiative. They will then drop opposition as a final concession to control the timing of the agreement and get the Chinese to the finish line.

Otherwise Xi is holding the cards and will do whatever helps the Candidate that is best for the Chinese, and he may need more visibility out of the Dems to choose his next move. It would either be Trump in May or June or no agreement if he wants the Dem.

18 Remember the 90s, when we used to talk about China's "most favored nation" status?

And then somehow, someway, the pols decided "fu*k that," and we stopped pretending we cared about human rights.

It's really quite amazing, after all this time, the one guy to emerge, who seems to care about these things, is Donald Trump.

And that's why he's hated. He's anti-Globallist bullsh*t. Plain and simple, and the simple minded fools in THIS country who lap up what they're told by the Democrat Party and the media, they hate him because... well, they don't know why, they just do.

Our political fight right now is very simple: Do you favor the globalist CoC or America? Choose one.

That only works if Trump wins 2020. If the Demonic Party were to take control of the Executive, then the move to de-industrialize the West resume, but likely accelerate.

Also something to consider going into 2020, the Demonic Party nominee will likely be the US's Hugo Chavez if The Enemy wins.

75 To those who GNF about Chi-com persecution of Uighurs, understand the govt. treatment of that group is not a simple matter of imposing a sort of dhimmitude. The worst types of sadistic violence and depredations are being committed against the internees, including public gang rape. This is Storm Trooper level torture, maybe worse. But the Chicoms have had some practice in this regard. Ask the Falun Gong.

I think it's perfectly rational on their part: the Chinese are allying themselves with our enemies, insofar as those enemies stay in their own country. They don't want those enemies in China, that's all.

While speaking to a black audience Joe Biden suddenly started babbling
about children stroking his hairy legs in the pool and how much he loves
to have children on his lap. Also something about roaches?

Joe Biden: And by the way I sit on a stand, I got hot, I got hairy
legs that turn, that, that, that, turn blond in the sun. And the kids
used to come up and reach in and pull and rub my legs, and watch the
hairs rise up again. So I learned about roaches. I learned about kids

88 China's Cold War against us isn't confined to trade. From what I've been able to gather, many of the SJW/Cultural Marxist movements on our campii have their roots in China. Lots of these groups try to kill our culture and Western culture by criticizing each and ever facet of American life even if they have to create something out of thin air to do it, like "toxic masculinity." Anyone with two brain cells to rub together knows there is no such thing, but Progda persists in acting as though it's an thing.

We also need to outlaw any form of "social culture scoring." It's already outlawed thanks to the First Amendment's freedom of association clause, but a law to enforce that wouldn't hurt. A message needs to be sent that that bullshit will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

President Boy would restrict Chinese students, thus opening up more spots for Americans. And the ones I did allow in would be on a short leash. Chipping them wouldn't be a bad idea either, for real time info on their whereabouts.

What would really be nice is a large federal agency whose job it would be to keep an eye on domestic social influencers from China and see if they're trying to create unrest here. The troublemakers would be instantly deported and never allowed back in (or any of their family members, either). I wonder what we could call such an agency?

154 One of the people killed by the London Bridge terrorist, the same terrorist who'd been released from prison early for a prior attempted terrorist attack, was a 25-yo "social justice" prison reform advocate named Jack Merritt. After Jack was murdered by one of the "rehabilitated" cons he'd been working with, his father issued this statement:

"My son, Jack, who was killed in this attack, would not wish his death to be used as the pretext for more draconian sentences or for detaining people unnecessarily."

Uh dude, when a terrorist wannabe is still hell-bent on murdering innocent people, like your son, putting him in prison for a long stretch of time is not "unnecessary" detention. It's very necessary, if we're going to have a livable society, to lock these animals away. And it's downright pathetic that even your own son's brutal murder is not enough to convince you of that obvious fact.

In England, Automatic Prison Release is a real thing.
Once a convict's sentence is served, he is released, regardless of anything.

Perhaps the only thing that can prevent a scheduled Automatic Release is a new conviction while in prison. Aside from that, nothing will prevent an automatic release, including, for instance, continued explicit support for al qaeda.

Leftists, such as the idiot father of the idiot victim, oppose those who oppose the very idiotic Automatic Release policy and regard prison stays as "detaining people unnecessarily."

I think it's more simple than that - when two of my enemies are fighting, why am I supposed to pick sides? Back in the Days of Empire, the British had a policy of always siding with whoever was weaker when this happened, with the idea that they didn't want any one enemy to get too powerful. But that backfired on them spectacularly a number of times, such as when they got involved in a stupid war in Crimea for Turkey's sake. It was similar to some of the stupid wars we let ourselves get into for similar reasons.

When two enemies fight, just stand back and order popcorn. Their circus, their monkeys.

Certainly, albeit with some minor changes. First, it needs to keep up with the times by changing its name to "U.K." in the same way that ESPN and AARP did. The letters used to be abbreviations but now they're official names made up of letters that don't stand for anything.

By ridding itself of the official reference to anything united or to a kingdom, the newly named U.K. can take its rightful and perpetual role as an administrative district of the European Union.

The other change is to the title of the song that's currently regarded to be its "national" anthem. This change should be obvious.

Medium sized manufacturers (building materials, auto supplies, appliances, etc) are moving production out of China with much of it coming to the states. Small domestic manufacturers, meanwhile, are now assertively choosing to source their materials domestically. They want to avoid not only the threat of tariffs, but to escape the unreliability of Chinese manufacturing quality, shipping problems, etc. Whereas small business advisory groups used to always tell their members "You must move your product assembly to China", those same advisory groups are now advising members to disengage from China. History will look back on the Trump era as the great disengagement from China. Never-Trump fake-conservatives will eventually whimper that although the result was economically beneficial to the USA, Trump did it all wrong because he was too confrontational and kept putting Americans' interests first.

*************
Agree the US has to do more, but I've had the misfortune of having to spend a lot of time involved with the Chinese shipyard industry. They are corrupt. Their production workers are uneducated, ill-trained and lazy. Their materials, especially their steel, is substandard and fails often. If pushed to meet deadline they cut corners causing problems after delivery. The Western educated managers I dealt with had their jobs because of language skills, not technical competence. At production meetings I'd watch for the worker "advising" the manager and try to communicate directly with him.
They basically have what we, in our laziness and greed, have let them have. Trump understands this and so do the chicom elite.

216 Two facts one should never forget in our dealings with China.
1. China cannot feed it's own population without imports while the US is the breadbasket of world.
2. China must import POL while the US is now energy independent and a net exporter.

Trump is going to win though you couldn't tell it by the "reporting" in most of our media. The end of the Holliday rush for consumer items coming from China will end in less than a month. US Companies were warned that the gravy train in China was going to come to an end nearly 3 years ago. It's coming and the Chinese know it. When Pelosi finally allows USMCA to come to a vote, and sooner or later she must, Trump will gain another arrow in his quiver since conservatively it will add 1% to the US GDP.

And there's more. Trump has made it clear he is not going to let the unfair trade agreements the US has with the EU/Europeans stand. Once USMCA is passed look for him to start working on that aspect more directly. The Europeans will then have less capital to buy from China or invest there.
What we're seeing now is just the beginning of the economic war on China.

These are the same corporations which would bully an American city for passing a transgender bathroom bill, or opposing any other brainless LGBT fad for that matter, but will gladly refuse to do their due diligence to enable the Chinese Communist Party relive the gulag glory days.

The hypocrisy is repugnant, and if anyone knows someone with a microphone big enough to bring it to the American people, I'd love to see the fallout, both for woke corporate America and China.

221 How in the chicken fried hell do you control a billion people?
My thoughts are; The chinese are running the same firedrill that our beloved democarps have going...just in a slightly higher and jumbled tone...

222 to 88: "What would really be nice is a large federal agency whose job it would
be to keep an eye on domestic social influencers from China and see if
they're trying to create unrest here. The troublemakers would be
instantly deported and never allowed back in (or any of their family
members, either). I wonder what we could call such an agency?"
I like the idea. As a fail-safe:

How do we keep the the chi-dept. apparat and the trenchies from going the way of Obahil and the Brennanite toads?

223 I think we should hit China over human rights because if we have to be saddled with Islam, I think we should do our best to insure that our competitors are similarly handicapped.
