The GOPe's "Budget Hawk" Fraud Is Over
[BUCK THROCKMORTON]

Fake-conservative politicians and pundits have been unmasked in the Trump era, and now another scam perpetrated by the GOPe and Conservative Inc seems to have run its course – the “Budget Hawk” fraud is over. For much of the past 40 years, fiscally conservative “budget hawks” have ensured that no conservative priorities are ever tackled because everything is subordinate to “the budget crisis.” A crisis they never did anything about. The key to the scam was “political capital” – it had to be reserved for the big battle to reign in “entitlements.” GOP politicians would refuse to tackle issues such as securing the border, or exiting from climate agreements, or pressing our deadbeat NATO allies to pay their dues, because it would waster precious political capital. Even worse, the “fiscally conservative budget hawks” refused to even cut “minor” wasteful spending such as aid to foreign despots who hate the USA, or funding for public radio leeches who also hate the USA. The budget hawks told us cutting these dollars were just “drops in the ocean.”

Ace wrote a great post about a dozen years ago explaining that the only way Americans would allow entitlements to be cut is if we eliminated every drop-in-the-ocean sacred spending cow first, so that people would realize that entitlements were the only thing left to cut. But our cowardly politicians also figured this out. Refusing to cut funding to PBS isn’t a bug – it’s a feature. They KNOW they will never have to cut entitlements, because it CANNOT happen if the small stuff isn’t cut first. And they won’t let you forget – cutting drop-in-the-ocean spending programs would waste that valuable political capital that must be reserved for the big budget battle. Even worse, the only time the budget hawks will oppose “drop in the ocean” spending is if it is for a conservative priority. They can find money to give to the PLO, but they oppose funding border security for fiscal reasons. Similarly with tax cuts – the budget hawks anguish about every lost dollar of tax revenue if taxes are cut, but they sure don’t mind tax dollars being steered to fund Planned Parenthood – dollars that could be cut to offset the tax cuts.

Donald Trump may not be championing fiscal responsibility, but he is actively advancing the rest of the conservative agenda. There is a very long list of conservative agenda items that Trump has followed through on, most importantly border security, but so much more - exiting the climate accord, moving the Israeli embassy to Jerusalem, Keystone, tax cuts, regulatory reform, refugee screening, the travel ban, etc. None of this would happen with a President McRyanBushRomney, because they’d conserve their valuable political capital for the big budget battle that was never going to happen.

Conservatives are sick of the budget hawk fraud so we elected someone who will at least advance the rest of our agenda if budget restraint isn’t going to happen. And not to belittle the deficit issue, but for 40 years I’ve been promised that apocalypse is imminent if I don’t keep electing GOP budget hawks. They did nothing and the apocalypse hasn’t happened. It’s a little like the imminent climate catastrophes that haven’t happened. Yes – governments can spend themselves broke (see Greece & Illinois) but conservatives have come to understand that “the deficit” is also an excuse for not fulfilling any other promises made to conservative voters.

Finally, it is noteworthy that Mark Sanford (R – Appalachian Trail), the NeverTrumpers’ great hope to beat Trump in the primary, was running on a platform of fiscal responsibility. This had them giggly with excitement, because we GOP voters had been duped by that fraudulent campaign promise for 40 years. Mark Sanford has since dropped out of the race with 0% GOP support. The GOP base will not be duped again by the Budget Hawk fraud.

Any cut to the budget anywhere, is a pay cut to someone in DC.

24 If you look at the increases in Federal spending, they were consistent up until Obama.

It did not matter who was in the Whitehouse, or who held Congress, the increases continued at almost the exact same rate.

It was just a question of WHICH part of the Government grew.

The only outlier to this was when Ross Perot was a Political Threat to BOTH parties, and they 'balanced the budget' (which they actually didn't).

But once Perot was destroyed, they immediately went back to the same rate of increase.

Saving the Feds about $10 Billion on MILITARY RETIRMENTS.

Yes, the Government took money out of the pockets of future military retirees, at the same time they were breaking the service with way too many deployments.

So, instead of going after the most deserving of a cut, they went after those who, IMO, least deserved any cut.

Heh. Reminds me of an incident when I was in college. My car was broken into one night and the fuckers stole all my textbooks along with a bunch of other shit. Among the books was Cornel West's thin little shit pamphlet Race Matters, which was mandatory reading for one of my courses.

About 2 weeks later, the fucker broke into my car AGAIN, this time leaving that same copy of Race Matters on the dash, but with a bunch of new notations in the margins.

I still have the book on my shelf, just because of this story, one of the few books I kept from the college years.

He's got bigger fish to fry. An austerity budget - in the unlikely event he could get it enacted - would be unpopular, and could prevent him from doing the Lord's work, e.g., reforming the Federal judiciary, closing the border, renegotiating our trade deals, holding NATO's feet to the fire, rebuilding the military, etc., not to mention getting re-elected.

The power of the purse has been de facto removed from the Constitution, at least when the GOP controls the House, because the House refuses to use it.

I'm done. I gave time and treasure and support and got more and more spending and now only ever CRs instead of a budget. Fine. This is how things are. Then I will take what victories I can get. Hell, at this point I'm willing to set aside my no more political dynasties and vote in DJT, Jr. and then Ivanka and then Tiffany and then whomever else is needed until the reign of Barron the Destroyer.

128 Puddleglum, it wasn't failed exactly; Drool Rockworm was that cavewight's actual name.

Donaldson wasn't yet all that good as a writer when he did the first three Chronicles books so he came up with bullshit names like that. And his publisher enabled Donaldson on account that para-Tolkien books were selling well in the 1970s. Said publisher admitted as much IIRC.

Maybe those ridiculous names could pass insofar as the first Chronicles was supposed to leave the reader guessing as to whether the whole Land was a parable for leprosy and self-loathing, and not a real place. Maybe.

Donaldson got better as a writer. A lot better.

140 I desperately want the budget issue fixed. But even with both houses of congress, and the presidency...did it get fixed? Nope. Not even close. Didn't even really try.

So.....? I mean...so what? You won't fix it whether you get elected or not.

And here is the thing - I could fix it. Most of the problem is entitlements, yeah? Okay, make a law that social security (for example) out payments must match inflow. So every time outflow exceeds inflow we have an automatic cut in outflow. Couple that with removing the high income cap on social security taxes, and maybe eliminate outflow payment to people earning more than $100k a year. It's really pretty simple to get it back into alignment. Make the cuts automatic. Increase the ceiling on contributions. Reduce payments to rich people.

By the way, removing the limit on the tax and reducing payments to rich people are just window dressing. The real meat is just cutting the payments to everyone by a little bit.

I could have been fired one time for shooting my mouth off at my orientation to the company. There were high-ups in the subsidiary company that wanted me fired.

My director pulled me into his office the day after and asked "What the hell did you say?" (not in a grumpy or overbearing way--but more like an amazing way)

The worst part was that I had gotten what I "contributed" to the discussion wrong, and set off an interdepartmental squabble.

So...I kind of know the feeling...but not that time only.

168 Heh.

Posted by: IllTemperedCur at November 26, 2019 01:43 PM (kw0bd)

That is hilarious.

I was reading the Chive, as one does, and someone had a story about his car being stolen. However, the thief was unaware that the gas gauge was broken and thus that full sign wasn't so much with the true. Thief made it four blocks before the car ran out of gas.

In retaliation, the thief tuned the radio to all country stations and then ripped off the knobs.

Ahhhh, pettiness. One of my most favorite things.

190 128 Puddleglum, it wasn't failed exactly; Drool Rockworm was that cavewight's actual name.

234 If I had to guess, it would be that Trump's approach to the budget is to make the American economy the world's b#tch. He is adamant about re-negotiating/killing all trade agreements rigged against American businesses, and he really is done with how China has played us for decades.

He's also all about ending all of the costly international stuff, such as by making other NATO countries pay their share, about no longer contributing to all that UN BS stuff (human rights council or whatever), not entering costly the Paris Accord.

Trump is about a completely different mindset - instead of starting the conversation with "I'm from America, how much do you want/need?" it's, "I'm from America, why should I invest in your program? What's in it for us?" This is a paradigm shift.

Now THAT is yuuuuge!

Posted by: Lizzy at November 26, 2019 02:05 PM (bDqIh)

235 It's the cognitive dissonance.

I attended a college seminar (many years ago...like very many) entitled "Government as the Enemy" which peaked my curiosity. Of course I wound up disappointed, as the lecturers' end goals wound up being to discuss how to get the populous from stop being perceived as an enemy, rather than really address meaningfully how government steals your liberties and labor.

In any event, one of the things that always stuck with me was the approval rating analysis. Well over 70% held a negative opinion of Congress, but when asked what they thought of their congressman, approval ratings hovered around 60% to the good.

And that's how it is with the budget. Nearly everyone will agree the budget deficit is an atrocity, but if you ask them if they would like the programs they use cut, most will oppose cuts that effect them. Ask them if they would like government funded projects slated for their particular region cut, and they will tell you they do not.

So basically people are self-serving hypocrites.

241 235 It's the cognitive dissonance.

265 Refusing to secure the border because you don't want to "waste" political capital that can be spent on entitlement reform makes no sense.

We're allowing tens of millions of third-world poor to come live here and breed here, and most of them are either on our welfare rolls under phony names, or soon will be. Plus they are spawning "American" kids in our hospitals, at our expense, who are immediately entitled to partake in all the various welfare programs, and do so, often for several generations.

We're never going to "reform" entitlements so long as we continue to allow millions more entitlement recipients to swarm across our border every damn year, and giving automatic citizenship to the entitlement-recipient children they spawn here.

Border security and entitlement reform are tied together. And we should stop pretending otherwise.

Serious question: are the Democrats actually the "Tax and spend" party? They're definitely the "spend" party, but they had plenty of time under Obama to increase taxes and didn't really do much of that when they were in charge.

I don't think the Dems really care about taxing, the rhetoric about making billionaires pay their fair share seems like their version of kabuke theatre.

296 Plus there's the FACT that the national debt CAN NEVER BE PAID DOWN.

It's just not mathematically possible and hasn't been for over 60 years.

In my years of observation the way it goes is when the Dems get in they vote for more giveaways and reduce money to defense Whereas the Reps take away money from the giveaways and giver money to defense.

Neither plan works. And although we could strive for a lower deficit, that too is becoming mathematically difficult at best and pretty much politically impossible.

Until everyone accepts these facts, no sane budget plan will get approved. And by everyone, I mean the people of the country and the politicians.

Bobby Jindal was reelected with nearly Huey Long levels of support. Then the LA economy took a huge hit and there was no money so he went in and made cuts. Deep cuts. Unpopular cuts. Cuts that had to be done because there was no money.

I remember reading at the time a blog post from a guy whose father lived in LA. The posters was supposedly a huge conservative (which was verifiable from other posts) and a fiscal hawk. But! But those cuts resulted in the hospital closest to his father having to close some programs due to lack of funds from the state and now his father would have to travel an extra 25 miles or so, which was an actual hardship given his father's health.

The poster railed on and on and on and on and on about how terrible Jindal was and I thought this is why nothing ever gets cut. Because the people screaming the loudest for cuts scream even louder when those cuts impact them.

I believe Jindal's approval ratings were in the 20s when he left office.

312 I was reading the Chive, as one does, and someone had a story about his car being stolen.

Reminds me of the story about the Cleveland guy who left his two Browns tickets on the dashboard of his car when we went grocery shopping, and when he got back out, the window was smashed and there were four Browns tickets on the dashboard.

I believe Jindal's approval ratings were in the 20s when he left office.

Any line item that has no graft built into it will not be passed or approved.
Therefore, all line items passed or approved have graft built in.

For personal branding reasons, he refused to wear a helmet, insisting on his chef's hat.

On the second play of the game, he took a handoff, broke around the right side, and commenced a long run toward the goal line.

Sadly, he was stopped just short of scoring a touchdown on his first run. The ferocity of the tackle, however, caused his hat to fly off, and travel forward.

This became immortalized as "One Toque over the Line".

There's mistakes, and then there's mistakes. In the big picture, your's was nothing. I always think of a story my sister in law told me, about when she was an RN working the late shift at a local hospital, she was assigned to go around and give all the patients their overnight medicines, mostly while they were asleep. So she made the rounds, got back to the supply cabinet, and was horrified to realize that she had accidentally swapped bottles and given one patient a powerful heart medicine when he was supposed to get antibiotics. She was horrified, she said she felt paralyzed when she realized what had happened, was sure she would be fired immediately. So she worked up the nerve to go tell her supervisor, who could see the terror in her face.

and then came the punchline: Supervisor replied "Oh, THAT"s all? Hon, we all do that from time to time. Don't worry about it." (the patient luckily did not show ill effects)

Mixed medication has been a huge issue in hospitals for forever. There's a reason why most hospitals nowadays give you a bar code wristband when you check in. It's become standard procedure for nurses to scan the patient's wristband and scan the medication to double check to match what their EMR says they should be taking to make sure you're giving the right thing to the right patient.

I've been hearing it since middle school and planned accordingly.

I'm upper Gen X as well. 10 years to retirement. Fortunately, not being stupid, I saved close to a million bucks in my 401K/IRAs. In ten more years, god willing, I should be fine. Naturally I expect democrats to decide to fix social security on may back - let's heavily tax 401Ks! Everyone who saved something - tough shit! It's unfair that you have all that money! And I expect them to tank the stock and bond market. All they have are terrible ideas.

It's the millennial below that are really screwed - at least I didn't start life owing $100k to a progressive university for a useless degree. I could buy a house for <$350k. Public schools were still decent. Sheesh they are really getting screwed. And the same socialists that are screwing them are getting their votes, by promising to stop screwing them and instead screw someone else.

442 OMG these people really have no clue that they brought this on themselves. Hello, how did you treat Sarah Sanders??
@jackholmes0
In a world without press briefings, the White House press corps has
mostly accepted a system of ritual abuse
, where they are forced to ask
the world's most powerful man questions over the roar of a helicopter
engine.

"If you get the chance to ask the President of the United States a
question, you take it." That was one correspondent's response when I
asked him why they all continue to put up with this, week after week.

"You haven't lived," said @BrianKarem "until you've been crammed with 175 people into a space meant for 25."

"It's faux access," said a senior White House reporter who has mostly stopped participating. "It's a joke."

*shakes head in amazement of how stupid and self-absorbed these people are.

Roads are in the Constitution as "postal roads". It's why the first trains and planes carried mail so that the Feds could use Fed money to build the rail lines and airports. Same with sea ports.

I do love how the brave GOPer's in office always talk about holding the line on spending and getting rid of Obamacare, and then you have one cocksucker that breaks ranks to give the Dems the necessary votes, and then every other GOP sucker of cock decides they need to "be on the right side of history" and vote for the program.
