The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

The limits of knowledge is something that conservatives should appreciate, but all too often we substitute our belief for knowledge. Just because we think it is true...should be true, want it to be true...doesn't make it so.

There is something in philosophy (or epistemology) called "Gettier Cases," and they expose the limits of what we know, or what we think we know. Something that makes sense based on our incomplete data may still be false.

We love to trot out "Chesterton's Fence" to slap down the hare-brained schemes of the idiot freedom-stealing progs, but we ignore the limits of knowledge, and sometimes embrace what is called "Justified True Belief," even though it is incomplete. Yeah...Plato was wrong, or at least didn't get to the whole truth.

Anecdotal evidence, correlation without causation, and a host of logical shortcomings will always...ALWAYS...bite us in the ass. Maybe not today, but definitely tomorrow!

This is what separates us from the beasts and the liberals (but I repeat myself): the ability to interpret facts and understand the limits of our knowledge. That's why we embrace Adam Smith's invisible hand, and laugh and laugh at communist five-year plans and government-run...um...anything.

This is why the best strategy to Thanksgiving dinner is the odd bits you've had in your cupboard for a couple of years and don't remember the reasons why you bought them, or even if you did buy them. They may be from the previous owner of the house for all you know.

41 Trying to find a way to duck out of Thanksgiving dinner. Here are the ingredients:

Father-in-law - formerly abusive, divorced, and out of the family's life for decades. Now old and infirm and no one else to care for him. Starting dementia.

Mother-in-law - sweet as anything. Well into dementia.

Wife: stopped talking to me about 5 days ago. Long stupid story.

Son: ended contact with me and family back in February.

Stepson: skipping out on Thanksgiving for Friendsgiving because years ago - before he was born - his grandfather (see formerly abusive FIL) was racist

Stepdaughter: accuses aunt (SIL) of abuse when she was very young - did not happen, was coached into it by her dad who was using CPS as a weapon.

Couldn't invite any of my family members because my stepkids think they are terrible people.

Trying to figure out how to just go to Cracker Barrel.

50 Plato, uber liberal, was wrong about the biggest thing, the nature of being, as his famous student pointed out. The problem with the type of philosophy that they epitomized, the philosophy of being, is it is divided between sense and intellect, and this divide cannot be overcome. The liberals are always on the side of intellect, which appears to provide freedom from sense. But as soon as they obtain this freedom, they lose touch with reality.

You just named a theme I'd been thinking about, since this week I watched "The Wild Bunch" again for the first time in years. I had forgotten how amazingly good a western that was, and now that I've been thinking more about how plots are constructed and characters are developed, I can appreciate what a masterful job was done with all of that.

Personal Loyalty - what makes it, what breaks it, is the fundamental theme of the entire film.

To paraphrase something the Z Man posted on his blog: Politicians
aren't a reflection of the people, they are a reflection of the
political class that recruits and grooms them. The reason that the
quality of politicians is in decline is because the system is in
decline. Both parties are controlled by narrow interests at odds with
the needs of the country.

Today's political class is totally uninterested in anything beyond the acquisition and exercise of power. Treating others as equals or even having empathy for others is no longer a quality that's valued, it's merely feigned. Surface appearances, not personal character or integrity, are what's valued.
IMHO, a lot of that is the predictable result of the absence of true faith in God. The people who want to rule over us have no guiding principles such as The Golden Rule or even the recognition of a Higher Power that would temper their ambitions.

imo the whole "Free (global) Trade" will bring us world peace, was a case of being fooled by the globalists, that loved to escape US regulation (abuse of labor, pollution, currency advantages, offshoring profits ...) ... but they kept the veneer of "comparative advantage" and other ideals that sounded academic and virtuous.

Of course the "invisible hand" concept makes a good point, but invisible hands come in many forms ... mafias, governments ... not just consumer choice. Any place their is power, it is to some degree being abused by invisible hands (power corrupts).

When those in government accrue power, their hands fiddle with the mechanisms of markets, taxes, interstate trade, selective prosecution/persecution ... and so on. They form bureaucratic shadow governments that use government invisible hands to serve their own jobs and golden pensions, and quietly do the Lois Lerner-esque attacks on those seeking reform.

And now we confront the mysterious DeepState Hydra, and realize the power of the oligarchs and sub-heads of state (Mueller/Comey/Brennan types) has operated on a deeper level, that directs not just consumer choice, but manipulates governments. The secret of their success has been the secrecy of their moves.

178 And it's interesting that you chose this topic as it has to do with something I was thinking of putting into words.

Andrew McCarthy's new book basically says that the CIA and NATO intelligence decided 1) they didn't want a President Trump, and that 2) they would use taxpayer dollars and the apparatus of keeping our countries safe to create a conspiracy about him.

This is how destructive it is to DEMOCRACY to say that "All the intelligence agencies agree" on Orangemanbad but you're not allowed to know the specifics because we're the experts.

Republics make an account for ignorance because there is no state direction (no "arc of history", either), and realizing the mutual ignorance of the One True Way, we put things up for a vote.

Voting allows for ignorance and the structure of each person looking after their own interests and their own agendas makes it somewhat of a wash.

I have found that Waffle House is a terrific place to go on a Holiday. People aren't usually drunk that time of day, it's busy and most folks are glad to have a place, and finally the staff are usually super happy because they are making bank that day.

We made reservations on Christmas night once for Buca Da Bepo or whatever, and when we got there they mistakenly had been seating first come, first serve and reservations were de facto not being honored.

So many angry people.

I said, hey, Waffle House is open, let's go there. So we went and they sang the 12 Days of Waffle House Christmas to us on request. Our store wrote their own lyrics...sooo great.

Judy has been there for 30 years, Laura for 25, and Dawn for 20.

Also, I hate Bucca de Boppa, or whatever, anyway.

Oh if you ever happen to stop by the Waffle House just south of Nashville on I-65 for breakfast, please tell them I said hello.

Yep - backed up by that story this morning that Lawrence, from Michigan, thinks Impeachment is now a bad idea. This is a safe dem seat; if she's going weak, imagine what's happening to the rep's from Trump districts who don't want to be booted next year.

I think Schiff, behind the scenes, sold them all a big bill of goods, I think he told them "Oh yeah I've got the smoking gun! I'm going to prove it all live on TV! Agreed.

Lots of people think that he gets re-elected because of open primaries, but that just isn't so. He is a very popular Republican in SC.

So, if Biden or whoever else is threatening him is trying to take him out, it has to be something that would either be criminal or knock him out of SC politics. (The first is not necessarily the second!)

236 You just named a theme I'd been thinking about, since this week I watched "The Wild Bunch" again for the first time in years. I had forgotten how amazingly good a western that was, and now that I've been thinking more about how plots are constructed and characters are developed, I can appreciate what a masterful job was done with all of that.

Personal Loyalty - what makes it, what breaks it, is the fundamental theme of the entire film.
Posted by: Tom Servo at November 26, 2019 11:29 AM (Kpl3J)

True, but the reason I like the movie is that it is an introduction to what Mexico was like 100 years ago, which has echoes in our world today (cartel wars, mass migration, etc.). Although Pershing chasing Pancho Villa is dimly in historical memory for many, almost no one is aware that we landed in Veracruz and occupied it for 7 months.

Nothing wrong with it, generally. Honest wealth and the creation of it is a good thing, along with a rising standard of living.

The big question is this: do people who have a lot of money also want others to have it too? Or do they pull up the ladder behind them so others can't have it?

IMHO, that's the difference between self-interest and greed.

I've been reading Gottlob Frege lately. And the man is amazing. Really his singular place in inspiring analytic philosophy is one of those things that people have cited along with George Boole set us up for computational mathematics.

What he missed in his own mathematical treatment of the logic of statements still awes me to this day. He was a Mathematics professor. In his life, he wrote far more mathematics papers than "philosophy".

Frege cut the Gordian knot in analytical philosophy as well, when he explained that he can't tell you what "truth" is, because any statement that can be made about truth or prior to truth needs a sense it which it is "true".

So the practicality of assigning statements to the value of TheTrue or TheFalse was genius--and as he was a mathematician, he was versed in all sorts of adoptions of non-linear axioms simply to advance the specification of the system.

However, in his two-valued system, he failed to understand that "truth" was an identity function. So Frege created one of the blights on Philosophy called "deflationism".

Frege argued that "is true" was a meaningless statement since "S is true" implies no more than S.

Again, the guy is a mathematician, and he doesn't relate that x + 0 is no more or less than x or that x * 1 is no more or no less than x. That x * 1 = x for all x defines *1 as the multiplicative identity function, it does not make "x * 1" meaningless. But Frege dismissed "S is true" as meaningless.

He was right in intuiting that the "formal definition of True" is circuitous and therefore, in a way fruitless, but he cut a knot too far in discarding "S is true" as having meaning.

Frege tried to "formalize" the logic of statements, but merely displaces the area of ignorance and paves over it, all to appeal to the confidence of knowing.

Personally, I don't care if Graham is gay. Or isn't. The idea that if someone never got married, they MUST be gay is silly. Considering how many morons are on here lamenting they should never have gotten married, because they wouldn't have gotten divorced and dragged through the financial and child support ringer, maybe Lindsey was smarter than that.
He has said with his career , he just didn't have time to get involved with someone. At his age, why get involved with someone when he has lived his entire life the way he wants to live it? And if he is gay, possible he decided his faith dictates he not live the gay lifestyle( Graham attends a Baptist church regularly) . If that is the case, he is to be commended.

That is what the libs ignore about Christians. Whatever your personal life, demons, etc. as long as you live according to God's will, those personal affects mean nothing. Christians do not have problems with people who are gay, they have problems with people living out a gay lifestyle. Just like people who don't take marriage vows seriously, lie, cheat, steal, covet, etc. Personal behavior decisions are what Christians judge people on, not their skin color, sex, etc.

Nicholas Taleb, in "The Black Swan", spent much of that book expounding on that idea. His primary theme was that huge, world changing events happen fairly often; but the most profound ones are those that nobody could have imagined happening (except for a few) until after they happened.

We don't know what we don't know, as Rumsfeld said; and Taleb added, THOSE are the things that change the world in the most dramatic ways.

cheat, steal, covet, etc. Personal behavior decisions are what
Christians judge people on, not their skin color, sex, etc.

What they know about Christians they learned form tv and movies, which means all Christians are a caricature: white, stupid, bigoted, loud-mouthed, incredibly judgemental to the point of hateful, and secretly hiding their own twisted perversions behind their religiosity.

We have oversold personal liberty and self-actualization.

My answer to Brietbart's "If you can't sell Liberty, you suck" comment is why would I have to sell liberty? And why if you arrive at a state that can be described as having failed to sell it, must I assent to its ultimate universality?

Doesn't the idea that someone has to sell liberty to non-liberty buyers suggest that it's not as imminent-domain as must then be an article of faith?

Besides, people who don't buy liberty are themselves participating in their liberty to not buy liberty. This is what the idea of liberty allows. It also allows the idea of my liberty is good and should be promoted and your liberty is bad and should be curtailed.

And in real-world terms, nobody has liberty unless there is an enforcer that reins in liberty. The founders wanted to "secure the blessings of liberty", and I have often argued that does not make liberty an inherent good in itself.

It's like Medicine. Life in the right quantity, ineffective if you don't have enough, and a poison if you have too much.

Liberty unmoored from a culture of personal responsibility is like an iceberg drifting into your shipping lanes, a disaster waiting to happen.

The difference between a libertarian and a libertine is often lost on the Libertarian Party, but profound.

370 When I first got my doctorate 20 years ago, I was visiting over at my parent's house when one of my mother's friends dropped by. I hadn't seen her in awhile, and she asked, "How are you, Mr. Farmer?" My mother immediately corrected her- "He's Doctor Farmer now, but not the kind that helps people." Never cared to be called Doctor- feels presumptuous.

Good comment. As much as I love liberty and want it for all (but most apparently don't want it for themselves), I've often thought we're all slaves to something usually self-imposed, and it's what we choose to be slaves to that makes all the difference (e.g. principles, self-reliance, family, etc. -- or their opposites).

Really, what damage could it do? They created the culture in which gay is totally ok. Sure there's the hypocrite thing--but that would be only if he had personally opposed gay stuff. And to what I know, he has not.

So "hypocrisy" would simply be not getting on the social revolution train and living your own life?

That's the crap that people are rejecting from SJWs. I really think this would go badly for any liberal who tried to out Graham.

Meanwhile, Graham is probably right to realize that there are bigger jeaopardies in play now.

Being a doulos ("slave") for the Lord ... is a phrase from the Bible. But it is a free will choice, and in lifestyle a minute by minute choice. When it comes to governments "securing the blessings of liberty", it is about forming a (necessary evil?) government to protect the God given rights (liberties) of the individual from the invading hordes (or anti-liberty governments and globalist cabals).

"in real-world terms, nobody has liberty unless there is an enforcer that reins in liberty."

Government (ideally, constitutionally) reins in those that would steal personal liberties from others. Statue of Liberty shines as an example to the world of how to do that. "Liberty" is inherently good imo, but it is limited to liberty to do a greater good, a higher calling. The free will choice to do evil is a bad choice, but a good part of "Liberty".

"Liberty" is not reined in by (good, constitutional) government, crime is punished. But the liberty to commit crime remains. And that is good. But culturally, people should be raised to be self reliant, serving a higher calling, seeking a "greater good" (by personal choice, not government mandate).

Actually, in my normal pattern of thinking what I called "liberty" because I was using the word, is normally what I call "freedom". I just had been using "liberty" ala Breitbart, so it was in context.

In my terminology, I actually use "liberty" to describe freedom after adjustment for criminal actions.

However, the government is force. There is no law without enforcement. "Crimes" describe those classes of actions ruled as punishable by the center of orchestrated force, the State. IMO it removes a functional view of freedom to say that "nobody has the freedom to commit crimes" because unless a body defines and enforces those crimes, everybody does.

The mental short-cutting is fine, in most cases. But actually prevents a functional bone and sinew understanding of what exactly "freedom" is. We must restrict the full range of actions of which somebody engages in because 1) they are capable and 2) they want something accomplished through that action.

This in this scheme, adjusted freedom is "civil liberty".

In the view of Ignorance, it's important to think of what something is before we classify "good" and "bad" implications of that thing. Government is the agreement of force to stop somebody using the full range of actions they are capable of. It suffers from the same ignorance as we do in general, however, the whole purpose is that there is force behind it so stakes are definitely raised.

Sure, government force is the necessary power in an evil world, to counter the power of (often evil) more malign groups, foreign and domestic. The founders' attempt to restrict government (Bill of Rights) was admirable, not perfect.

But the concept of a government protecting individual sovereignty is righteous, and "Liberty" itself ... the right to choose ... is (imo) always a good thing. The alternative is control by an owner class, raw power. Even in evil governments, choice is there I suppose, but not in a practical way, not in a way that makes a prosperous nation of liberty. (though righteous Joseph made Egypt prosper, on his way to a higher calling, no thanks to his brothers)
