The product can safely be called the world’s first male contraceptive.” The birth control method, which lasts approximately 13 years, involves injecting a polymer, called styrene maleic anhydride, into the vas deferens, effectively blocking sperm from leaving the testicles. The shot, preceded by a dose of local anesthesia, is designed to supplant a traditional vasectomy.

It is 2019 UK6 we had most prior warning about, as it was first observed on October 24. NEO 2019 UK6 is an Amor asteroid, which that goes around the Sun and the Earth, occasionally, but very rarely, crossing Earth's path. Apollo asteroids, on the other hand, intersect with Earth’s orbit as the planet travels around the Sun.

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (CNN) After years of not hearing from a Glens Falls, New York, man, Rick Hazelton's family had him legally declared dead.
But a friend of Hazelton wanted answers and with the help of a detective was able to track down Hazelton. He found out that Hazelton was not dead, but rather he had moved around the country. "One day I got a letter in the mail that said, 'You're being investigated in a missing persons report.' And I thought, 'That can't be right, I'm not missing. This has gotta be a mistake,'" said Hazelton. Hazelton says that cellphones and social media just weren't around back then and so he just fell out of touch with friends and family. Now, 33 years later, he's back in touch with those who love him and is spending Thanksgiving in New York.

In a recent piece by EJ Dickson, the expert witness is Dr. David Ley, a “clinical psychologist and sex therapist” who “has partnered with the [pornographic] cam website Stripchat” to spread the word about “sexual health.” The story also includes interviews with the vice presidents of two different porn sites, an embedded tweet about the supposed health benefits of chronic masturbation, and – to wrap it up – a “comforting message” from an “adult performer and director.” They all want you to know that porn won’t hurt you or anyone else. After all, everyone is watching it. She is suing three NHS trusts saying they owed a duty of care to tell her about her dad's Huntington's disease. Any child of someone with the condition has a 50% chance of inheriting it. Doctors suspected the diagnosis after her father shot dead her mother and was detained under the Mental Health Act. The father tested positive for Huntington's Disease, which is caused by a faulty gene and leads to the progressive loss of brain cells, affecting movement, mood and thinking skills. It can also cause aggressive behaviour. He told doctors he did not want his daughter told about his diagnosis, fearing she might kill herself or have an abortion if she found out.

An Iranian man seeking asylum in Australia botched his DIY penis enlargement procedure — and was granted entry to undergo pricey reconstructive surgery on taxpayer dime, according to local reports. Alec Ingram of Washington, Missouri, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2015, and for the past four years has fought bravely against the disease. A Facebook page called Alec Ingram’s fight with Cancer was set up to keep people informed on his progress. They got updates of successes and setbacks, and the post received scores of comments from prayer warriors and well-wishers who all wanted Alec to overcome osteosarcoma.

Prop 13 only covers houses bought before a certain date. Anyone who has bought a home in the last umpteen years already pays ungodly property taxes, so they would not have sticker shock.
I think a lot of the people in favor of it are driven partly by spite.

No - the deal is that the house value resets when the house is sold, so the new buyer pays property taxes based on the price of the house when you bought it.
I have a friend who bought a house in Silicon Valley for $80,000 - the house is now worth a couple of mil. She pays taxes on the $80,000 valuation, but anyone buying the house would pay taxes on the two million valuation.

I think it's doable, if we plan for Easter or summertime 2021.

Seemed to be kind of hard starting. and the dyno room was very noisy, even with the VW engine not running. The problem with those huge dual carbs, on those little short stacks, is that cylinder filling at low RPM's is not good; the airflow has next to no velocity.

The state already passed a rent control law, and did it quite brazenly over the will of the voters.
A rent control item was up on the ballot during the last big election. The voters voted it down. Sacramento then went and passed a rent control law just a few months later.

A lot of Oregon public employees move to states with no state income tax after they retire. I've never figured out why Oregon pensions don't count as income generated in the State of Oregon, and are therefore subject to Oregon income tax.

'Twas I, indeed. But I'd be wanting something down around 140hp, with good power and torque graphs, no overheating, magnificent reliability and longevity.
That 200 hp engine borders on being a rolling grenade.
But imagine if you will, an "every nut and bolt" renewal of such VW, with modern, mapped digital fuel injection, a five speed manual, four-wheel disc brakes, state of the art suspension (remember, the Super Beetle has MacPherson Struts up front, and the rear axles have inner and outer CV joints, so no "swing axle" sadness there.
Right-size the wheels n' tires, set the body angle to not roll "nose up" when going down the highway.
Line the body shell with modern soundproofing before installing the interior. Use modern electricals, with robust, maintainable connecters.
Install the AC compressor from a surplus Suzuki sedan. Tiny compressor, but it does the job without hogging-down HP. Restore an old "Factory Air" under dash unit. Yeah, that was the brand name. And it contour fit under the dash, vs. being one of those "hang down" suitcase size units we used to see on domestic iron.
Give the car amenities. Power windows. Ergonomic arm rests. Cruise control. Many way adjustable seats. My 1st Beetle, a '71, even had an aftermarket center console on the floor, and I'd built a custom add on that joined the floor console with the underside of the dash, and gave me a place for switches and indicator lights for the halogen driving lights on front bumper.
A decent stereo, but not a ghetto-car-thumping abomination of distorted sound.
Put some modern headlights in the fenders, good LED stuff behind all the other lenses.
Like I said. Try to bring the car up to more modern, refined standard. Not "Hot Rod", but DRIVEABLE on a daily, dependable and comfortable basis.
That'd be the Resto Mod I'd want on one.

Oregon public pensions used to be exempt from state income tax. This ended after Federal retirees sued for the same treatment, so the tax exemption was eliminated.
The State of Oregon then raised all the Oregon public pensions by enough to cover the state tax liability. Even if you move to Nevada or Washington, which has no state income tax, you still get the pension bump.

Ending Prop 13 would be interesting for a lot of old lefties in Berkeley and Oakland (I'm Airbnb'ing in some old hippes' place this week). I get the feeling this is yet another community where people either bought cheap many years ago or inherited. There are TONS of old structures in Berkeley/Oakland (some of them dumps, some charming). I think taxing them another $20k/year would cripple a ton of retail and entertainment/hospitality businesses. I wonder if zombie has a sense of this.

You could probably get 140 hp out of a DIY upgrade in your garage, but the digital fuel injection would take some know how on how all the sensors work and how to program it. I think there are actually kits for that if you do some searches.

Finding a 5-speed that could be made to fit would be a problem, given that VW's used a transaxle, with all the gears in one housing. Maybe some Porsche or Subaru units could be adapted?
IIRC, fourth gear in air-cooled VW's was slightly overdriven, anyway, so that 4 speed box had a pretty good spread. Build your engine to have a broad flat torque curve, and you won't much miss a 5-speed.

Five speeds are listed in ads in Hot VW and VW Trends magazines. Spendy, but they're there.
Trick to building a proper 1600cc Dual Port engine would occur long before the first wrench was turned.
The Spec Sheet on this would be THE key to success.
Which cases to source? Original or aftermarket cylinders? Water-cooled heads? (they're out there, too.) Which pistons? Rings? Crankshaft from which company? Bearings?
And yes, there are proven, ready to go, digital engine control systems for the VW engine on the marketplace. No need to re-invent the wheel there.
And, etc.
To get the right spec sheet, I would haunt the VW Beetle forums, get a consensus on who might be the Top Ten builders in the land, and solicit input from them.
And then pick one to build the damn thing. I'd insist on perfection, and being a Beetle, aircraft safety wire on certain components, such as the case-half bolts.
Can I build such an engine? Don't doubt that I could.
But I'd prefer to pay the guy who builds these as a Masterpiece, fifty weeks in a row.

I think I've relayed this before here but when the late Mrs. TP did herself in at home, the responding patrol cops told me to say nothing to the detectives who were enroute. I was in no shape to think and follow their advice but they were right. The detectives tried to pin it on me for a few hours.

I had to look up the etymology of "ped". It has several meaning. The form meaning "child"/young comes from the Greek. In Latin, ped means foot.
Incidentally, there is a form from Greek that means soil/dirt, which is clearly related to feet, which trod upon said soil.
But, ironically, considering today's Swallowell angle, there is a Latin form that means "to fart".
So ped-/pedo-/etc, etc can mean child, foot, dirt or farting.
The word "petard" which persists today only in the Shakespearean "hoist with his own petard" comes from the fart meaning. It was a fart pun, which is lost in modern English.

Some years back there was a company in Michigan that bought the stamping molds for the Chevy Tri-5's to make the bodies or body parts out of brand new steel. For the entire body you'd shell out 25k, which in most cases is less expensive than restoring an original. Hot Rod featured a 55 Bel Air convertible built as such, with an LS-1 and Heidt IRS. Painted it two-tone burgundy and black and it was absolutely gorgeous.
Jay Leno once said that if you're really into restorations or restomodding, a 3D printer is a fantastic investment.

Well, if you want to play games with the cops. But by doing that, you are acknowledging that you knew the cops put it there, and took steps to defeat its purpose. It's tantamount to "evading" police, and evidences a guilty state of mind. Or so it would be claimed in court, at least. By dropping it in a chuckhole as described above, you have plausible deniability that you even knew the thing was there, let alone took steps to defeat it.

You can 3D print trim items, and some non-structural, and non-heat resistant parts. I doubt you could 3D print a forged steel steering idler arm, or a crankshaft, for example. And even if you had an absolutely perfect 3D CNC mill, I doubt you could duplicate a forged crankshaft, because the internal crystal structure of the metal is an artefact of the forging process, and is why such parts are made as forgings.

I had dinner with a senior physician from Children's Hospital BRS* and we were discussing how cardiologists have abandoned physical examination in favor of echocardiogram ($2500 a pop, at least) and that virtually every single patient seen in their clinic gets an echocardiogram done before even seeing the doctor. I asked him how long he thought this model could be sustained, and he said (in essence), "It will go on indefinitely."
I suggested that it would perhaps continue until Medicare for All was implemented, at which point some combination of rationing, price controls and denial of service would kick in.
He looked at me like he had never heard of Medicare for All.

Well, prior to around 1940, windshields and most car windows were just flat glass, usually laminated safety glass. (Really old cars used plate glass, before the invention of safety glass.)
Flat glass can be cut from stock, and most glass shops have, or can get templates for nearly any car. It doesn't even cost very much. Curved glass for popular old models can be made. The glass companies often keep the old molds, and will run off a batch if there is an order.
Obscure old models with curved glass can be a problem.

Depends greatly on the vehicle. For common Ford/GM/mopar no problem. A little harder for things like Cortinas where you have to look for UK availability but still cheaper, even after shipping, than a current 3-series.

Well, if you want to play games with the cops. But by doing that, you are acknowledging that you knew the cops put it there, and took steps to defeat its purpose. It's tantamount to "evading" police, and evidences a guilty state of mind. Or so it would be claimed in court, at least. By dropping it in a chuckhole as described above, you have plausible deniability that you even knew the thing was there, let alone took steps to defeat it.

So I started cutting up the strips into short lengths, each with a single white LED. Some of them lit up right away, fed with 3 volts from a pair of D cells. Lit brightly, too. Some would not light at all, given any voltage. But a few, maybe half a dozen so far, would not light initially on 3 volts, but if jolted with 4.5 volts, they would light up brilliantly, and then subsequently would light normally on 3 volts. One didn't light until I zapped it with 9 (!) volts, and then it, too, subsequently ran on 3 volts. It's almost as though the PN junction in the diode was "clogged" with something, and an over-voltage cleared the clog.
And there doesn't seem to be any mention of this phenomenon on the Internet, so far as my searching has found.
It has happened with too many now for it to be explained away as simply me being too fumble-fingered with the wire leads.

That mostly works. Even door handles can be a problem. Some parts of them, like the splines that retain them to the spindle in the door, are barely strong enough when made of pot metal. 3D printed plastic splines might not hold up.

Current state-of-the-art metal printing results in parts that are roughly equivalent to a part made from the same material but wrought. strong, better than cast but not close to forged. Not a good choice for idler arms. The crystalline structure is more or less random.

Apparently, billet crankshafts are currently the hot tip. There are a few YouTube videos of a crank being completely machined out of a round on a mill-turn. Forging should be better, but apparently the CNC mill-turn production advantages make the result competitive in high-performance racing; NASCAR, I think, not drag racing.

Odds are, it'll be the same glass as for a '49 Buick or Olds.
Even back then, GM beancounters demanded the "whatever code" body platform, would have the same firewall, windshield frame, engine mounting points and "under the skin" architecture as the rest of the GM line in that series.
Maybe I'm a few years too early on that with the '49, but you can take it to the bank. By '55, a Bel-Air's windshield was the same as it's Cadillac counterpart.
The LINES of the front fenders differed.
They'd both line up to the same bolt holes though.
Such was always the way of GM, and is, and always shall be, until they die.
(and ford/mercury/lincoln was the same, just with more obviousness.)

Sintering in one form or another is typical in volume production applications, sintered gears can be put together such that they retain oil on their surfaces really well, most high output production engines have sintered con rods, hasn't been done for a crankshaft to my knowledge, maybe in small engines bike/snowmobile?

I just read the Wiki article on it. There is no "formal" definition for "pot metal", and it can be as you describe, melted scrap. Most "pot metal" of industry is stuff called "Zamak", and there are several formulas for it, with zinc being the biggest part of it.

One possibility might be that the excess current is generating enough heat to reflow the solder on the bottom side of the die.
The front contact is usually wire-bonded on, but I think the bottom side is typically soldered.
The heat could also be driving off some type of corrosion or intermetallic compound (like "purple plague") that's interfering with the wire bond on the front.
Those are just guesses, though.

Biggest problem with modern pot metal parts is a design that doesn't allow enough section thickness in highly-stressed areas, say the projecting lever on a car door handle where the linkage rod attaches. Or like the bike levers you describe.
For years and years, Studebaker cars used an ignition switch retained in the dash by a bezel with a thin sleeve that had bayonet slots to engage a pair of small studs on the switch body. Inevitably, one or both the bayonet slots would fail, and the ignition switch would flop loose behind the dash, sometimes shorting out and starting a wiring fire.
One of our parts vendors now sells a replacement bezel made of CNC-machined aluminum that is much stronger in that critical area. Costs a few dollars, but can save you thousands.

These diodes are surface-mount devices, soldered to a thin strip of flexible circuit board material bonded to an aluminum backing strip.
But it might be a cold-soldered joint where the LED is soldered to the board. I could see, maybe, an overvoltage burning through an oxide layer in a cold-soldered joint an (temporarily) restoring continuity.
I should retrieve some of the "absolutely dead" LED's from my trash box, hit each joint with a hot soldering iron, and see if any come good.

I used to have an old Unimat micro-lathe/mill. I think the body castings (but not the ways, spindle, or anything that really mattered) were made out of that stuff. Some kind of zinc alloy, anyway.
The Germans seemed to really like that stuff for some reason.

I remember the 55-64 GM ignition switch had that vaginal shaped sleeve for the key. I used to wonder why they did that since the key could be pulled out in the "on" position and the engine could be started without the keys. I would imagine that it was to keep the key from breaking off in the lock, or the engineers had pussy on their minds when they designed them.

Well, for casings it would make sense. It's a cheap way to make non moving parts on a mounted device like a little lathe, that never gets tossed around or anything.
My dad's cheap little starter bullet press was made out of it. After he put thousands of rounds through it, it cracked by the handle mount and he bought a tougher one.
Using it for moving parts in a high impact device like, say, a gun would seem like a bad idea.

i used to w*rk repo, so i can speak to this, somewhat.
prior to 76, you could slide hammer out a GM lock and put a new one in.
then they put a locking screw on the bottom, so you had to either "force" the lock, with a special socket on a ratchet, which cracked the internal mechanism, you a screw drive in the key slot would start it, or, if you tore the lock face off trying that, you had to manually tear down the column. PITA and you had to disconnect the battery, as you would invariably set off the horn whilst doing it.
i got out of the biz just as the 90's were getting started, and they had already started making the insides more complex, and with weird screws (Torx, etc) which made it much harder.
then, once airbags got put in the steering wheel, it was apparently like trying to defuse a bomb.

Cousin marriage is pretty common in really poor places. It allows you to keep more wealth in the family, since there aren't other families to make claims on the offspring.
It probably keeps those places poor, too, since there's a significant IQ drop associated with the practice.
