The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg
"This is how we know the impeachment hearings are a clown show:

"1. These hearings are just the culmination of a process that the Democrats started on or about the day Donald Trump was inaugurated. At that time, the whistleblower's leaker's attorney, Mark Zaid, said "the coup has started." And other Democrats have similarly been calling for impeachment from day And this was before Trump had done anything at all, let alone anything impeachable. It's like the crime was pre-determined, and now they're trying to figure out which one it is.

"2. Turns out that the Democrats have been focus-group testing their impeachment strategy. This is probably why the grounds for impeachment have been shifting from "quid pro quo" to obstruction of justice to bribery and extortion. The Democrats are switching the grounds for impeachment in and out so fast, I think I'm going to sue Adam Schiff for whiplash.

"Oh, and Trump should be impeached for undermining long-standing foreign policy put in place by, I don't know, career diplomats. That's a good one.

"4. Impeachment really should be bipartisan thing. But the Democrats haven't been able to peel off one, not one, Republican to stand with them on impeaching Trump. This is actually quite remarkable. They couldn't get even the squishiest RINOs to going along with this. This is an entirely 100% Democratic operation. And it's really funny to see how surly progressives are about this on social media. They keep saying things like "they just worship Trump", "they're all part of the Trump cult" and "it's sad that apparently not one Republican cares about facts and reality." They like to hammer that last point a lot. Oh, those poor blind Republicans. Trump is walking out of the Oval Office with all of the furniture and huge bags of cash with dollar signs imprinted on them and they can't even see it. Of course, the reason for the unyielding Republican intransigence is that they actually can see obvious facts: they know when a man is being railroaded when they see it. They know that Trump's only crime has been that he got elected.

"Lastly, if you want to talk about being oblivious to reality, I would say that it is the Democrats who are oblivious -- oblivious to the damage they're causing our political institutions and the rule of law. Impeachment was meant to be a last resort remedy, but by their constant shrieking of "impeachment!", the Democrats have turned it into just another campaign strategy. They have significantly lowered the bar as to what constitutes an impeachable offense. Heck, everything Trump does going forward that they don't like will be an impeachable offense.

"Of course, it's not going to work, and then they're going to be faced with the possibility that next election, or the one after, the institutions that they've weaponized to use against Trump will be turned around and used against them."

24 Focus-grouping this crap is maybe the only smart thing the Dems have done. It hasn't helped, but I actually understand that one. Impeachment is a political process. You need political capital - that is, you need the people on your side - to press it. I understand the focus groups. I just don't understand why they keep pressing forward.

And this was bipartisan. Some Dems voted against it, along with all of the Repubs.

46 If I am reading the statement about Sondland correctly, I am genuinely perplexed how these people get into and retain their positions.

The Big Guy never talked talked to his EU Ambassador about a quid-pro-quo. In fact, he explicitly *denied* and desire in that regard.

But then, based on the rumor chamber that is DC and diplomatic corps, Sondland came to believe not what he was directly told by his boss but instead what he was told by others his boss purportedly said to him.

That is weak-minded and weak-spined. No one like that should be an Ambassador to anything.

Just sent a note off to our local rag.

The lead story on page 2 was a snotty "journalism" piece from the AP about Vindman standing tall and insisting on being addressed by his rank. So I pointed out that, in our democratic republic, any civilian outranks a military officer and we can call the fucker "Vindman" or even "Lying Hack Loyal to the Deep State" if we want.

The bastard ought to be court martialed. Instead, he'll probably get a promotion.

71 I love lasagna. It is a full meal in a single slice.

We shall see.

What I find amusing about Anna Karenina is that many women read it in college (including my wife who recommended it to me). Occasionally the subject comes up when discussing books (not something I often do but this one was a fav), I like to point out that Tolstoy was on record as saying he conceived of Anna as a fallen woman not, as was becoming the thing with the rise of communism, as a heroine. Some women who read it in college want to argue with me about it, but I'm always impressed by the women who did not know this and I get to see the lights come on. Many felt the exact same way as Tolstoy but were intimidated by their teachers to believe that they were wrong.
Posted by: WTP at November 20, 2019 11:08 AM (66rlH)

It takes a certain level of obtuseness, regularly found at the old folks home called kollidge, to consider Anna a heroine. Tolstoy was quite a cockster as a young man; doubtlessly he banged a few Anna types and, once he'd extricated himself, thought "maybe I should write a book about a grasping skeezer".

That is the biggest thing I have gotten from this farce. People like me and many others here have always asserted that the Deep State - that is, the permanent bureaucratic/diplomatic/administrative corps - believes that they are entitled to run the country as they see fit and view the citizens as, at best, an irrelevance or, more generally, they view them with contempt.

They finally said it themselves. In congress. Under oath. On national television.

214 Library story time has been a fixture in most small town libraries for years. It was a way to help introduce using a library in kids minds, and could help them understand how to use a card catalog( now on a computer) , etc.

215 Lesson: Fire most of the State Department, replace with your own people. At this point I would prefer we bring back the spoils system. At least that system allowed the President to actually run the executive branch, not a bureaucratic aristocracy. Worse the U.S. Congress basically has handed much of their legislative power over to that branch of government, not the president, but the same aristocracy.

Right now it looks like we have an oligarchy that masquerades as a republic.

Sadly, the LIV aren't getting that.

I caught the today show first 5 minutes on the way out the door, where they were talking about the hearings yesterday.

the entire vindaloo segment was about his service, his patriotism, his letter to his dad, and how brave he was for coming forward and telling the truth - despite the "danger" to himself.

there was 0, Zero, NADA, ZILCH, about any actual substantive testimony he may have had yesterday.

that was the ENTIRE takeaway - a "patriot" risked his life to come testify in front of the congress of his fathers adopted homeland.

hollyweird couldn't have been more envious of how NBC framed it...

Years ago, I read a book called Literature Lost about the decline of literature and English teaching in high school and college. His theory was (in addition to just stupid, lazy teachers) that teachers just got bored teaching the same things, even if those things were effective. So they played with lit classes in cereal box writing or sight reading or whatever in an attempt to do something new and different.

It wouldn't surprise me if that were the case with the drag queen story hours -- it's different, it's "edgy," it gives bored and stupid librarians something to chatter about.

Sondland is very rich. I imagine the only thing that would concern him would be a railroading via a process crime, like Stone received. I think that's why he's trying to blur all the lines.

Yeah, he and Trump have F-- You money. Makes a difference. He is trying to make himself look good as possible, no doubt about it, for future personal and business reasons. But I don't think he's shading things a lot.

-------

Recall of a Congress Critter by the states, or people of the state is not in the US Constitution. Therefore it is unconstitutional and not allowed.

We need a Constitutional Amendment for that and for term limits too.

Bill Mauldin when he was out-processing to finally go home from Italy in WWII. "Downy-cheeked fugitive from a junior internship" giving him an interview asking about how he got a Purple Heart. LT asks if he had regained full use of his arm and hand.

Mauldin goes "Huh?"
LT, "It says here gunshot wound right shoulder."
Mauldin, "Oh, no I never lost use of my arm or shoulder."

Goes on about hospitalization and scar. Mauldin says no to either. Now the LT is shocked that he got a Purple Heart.

So another voice in the line pipes up after losing his temper, a guy who has obviously been stitched together after getting shot in the gut. "Christ lieutenant, he didn't make the rules! We take what we are given and do what we're told!"

Excerpted from the last pages of The Brass Ring*

*Also in this last chapter Bill had gained a beautiful German Shepard from a surrendering SS officer. The pooch was named Anna. A female State Department officer promised Bill to ship the dog home for him. He never heard from her again.

I agree on Trump. I do not agree on the Republicans.

Had Ryan and his caucus spent two years legislating in accordance with the will of their constituents and ideally in a way that furthered the president's agenda instead of spending that time impeding progress and playing little games in back rooms, the Dems wouldn't hold the house and all of the relevant committees.

If the Dims win in 2020, it'll get hot simply because they'll crash the economy so hard it'll pop out in China.

And then, there's their brilliant idea to seize all 401K, etc for "fairness", which they wanted since the first weeks of Oblabla, so that's coming.

Between those two things, there will be a lot of people looking for them to...uh...take responsibility.

They won't want that. It'll probably split the military and then it is on.

Sad.

But that appears what they want.

If Trump wins, they'll still try to wreck the economy.

Interesting times ahead becuz the Dims decided they were going to become an

Insane Kamikaze Communist Death Cult.

Only massive defeat at the polls might...might bring them back to reality.

458 Blago disagree. We have a signed agreement with Ukraine that each country will assist the other in investigating corruption. When Biden announced his candidacy, he started bragging about his foreign policy experience and the video of him bragging about demanding Ukraine fire a prosecutor investigating Burisma or no money started being shown everywhere. Peter Sweitzers book was out about Hunter. Was Trump just supposed to ignore it?

It is true that military award requirements seem to differ by war, era, and even service. At Gettysburg, in three days, 64 people earned the Medal of Honor. No one doubts the sacrifices there, but we can go many wars without that many awarded.

Okay. Blow it up an impeach him, then. It's always a solid political move to impeach a guy with 50% popularity and whose party has a very hard map in the upcoming senate election.

If this "bribery" then I'm the queen of England. gimmie a freaking break. Biden, Romney and Lord knows how many others were raking off billions from foreign lands in a convoluted game of influence, yet walk.

If Trump committed bribery, and I don't think he did, then pursuing this while ignoring the rest is exactly the kind of corruption that leads to seriously negative consequences for everyone.

Do it. Pull the damn trigger. Let's finally find out who's right.

Former national security adviser Michael Anton suggested Wednesday the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump looks "like an inside job" lawmakers unhappy with the president manufactured.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff interrupted Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman's testimony during an impeachment hearing Tuesday and cited an effort to protect a whistleblower.

"It looks like an inside job of a bunch of career bureaucrats getting together and saying, 'We've wanted to impeach this guy for three years. How do we do it? Oh wait, I think we've found a way,'" Anton, a former National Security Council (NSC) spokesman, said to WMAL's "Mornings on the Mall" co-hosts Vince Coglianese and Mary Walter Wednesday. "Here's the issue."

"It just looks phony, and that's what they're trying to avoid coming out," he added.

Way back when, it was considered just below the Silver Starr, which is just below the Medal of Honor. But there seems to be a new, non combat V type of bronze star. That is too bad as it only diminishes the medal. If someone earned it fair and square that is fine. But the impression many have about the Bronze Star is it is for valor in combat and only below two other medals of valor.

The purple heart is no bronze star. If certain services want to expand the issuance of bronze stars that is fine. But you can't expand the Purple Heart. Getting shot is getting shot.

I don't know how people can be so nasty to families trying to do the best for their child. Cures and treatments can come at an time, and what was once a dangerous thing, becomes very treatable. 20 years ago one type of AML was always fatal, now it is the most curable.

the error could be on my side. Even a quick check shows that the award was not originally given for specific valorous acts. The combat V award is the one I recall that people had to do a hell of a lot for. Again. I am not disrespecting anyone who earned a medal. But yeah, there have been a hell of a lot of Bronze Stars issued. Lots of dead guys never got one. That is all I am going to say about it.

642 463 The Purple Heart should be very special and the the requirements should be clear. I think overall that is still the case as I have seen many decorated Generals without a Purple Heart. I am not saying the shady stuff did not happen over the decades and wars, but I think they may be overstated at times for whatever reason.

It is true that military award requirements seem to differ by war, era, and even service. At Gettysburg, in three days, 64 people earned the Medal of Honor. No one doubts the sacrifices there, but we can go many wars without that many awarded.

I am not saying bad purple hearts have not been issued, they likely were. But I am saying most deserved it and the medal should never be diminished in any way. Many had their physical lives changed forever for that piece of ribbon.

Posted by: Quint at November 20, 2019 12:36 PM (n13/j)

So true about many people's physical lives changed forever for their Purple Heart.

My grandpa was badly wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a scout with the 25th cavalry - I think. All I know is he got shrapnel in his arm, head, and back, and was in a hospital in England for a few months.

Once or twice he mentioned he received a Purple Heart.

But he never talked about what is was like being in that battle. One can only imagine how horrendous it must have been.

It's maddening when some arrogrant SOB like Lt Colonel Lardass cheapens it.

QEII doesn't say a lot in public.

But you know she's fuming like mad over Randy Andy's latest peccadillo, and she's given him an old-fashioned dressing-down.

She seems like the only reason just about any miscreant in the British Royal Family will temper his or her behavior.

If Charles doesn't completely wreck things after the Queen passes. the only hope that monarchy has - tenuous as it is - will be William and Kate. And that's not saying a whole lot, IMHO.

Good times create weak men
Weak men create hard times"

Repeat an an infinity loop forever and that is civilization in a nutshell. America is in the "good times create weak men" stage of this cycle, bleeding into the next stage.

658 I have an update. My son's surgery actually started at 1:25 central time. FenelonSpoke, it is to resect the bit of his brain that is causing his seizures, which has scar tissue from a previous surgery.

The actual name of the procedure is quite a few latinate words. This is one of those procedures where they don't ask you to tell them what you are having done because nobody can remember its name. Instead, you try to describe it and they go "close enough."

I am so grateful for the horde. Y'all are so nice.

This notion confuses me. Not even necessarily the drag queens part - that's just revolting and evil - but the group storytime thing.

Is this really common? It is something I didn't experience and I am not that old. I had some group story times in kindergarten and group reading exercises in first grade.

Beyond that, every story time was with mom or dad (usually dad) and rarely with my older brother reading to me.

The idea of schlepping out of the house to a group story time somewhere else is totally outside of my experience. I didn't even know this kind of thing existed until the drag queens got involved.
