Luxury without the guilt [KT]

Luxuryory.jpg

Want to enter the bubble?

Happy Weekend before Thanksgiving! Got anything luxurious planned for the holidays? Hope you don't feel guilty about a little luxury. Maybe some nice little tradition, maybe something new? Because "luxury beliefs" are not a good substitute.

Luxury Beliefs

Rob Henderson in Quillette:

I was bewildered when I encountered a new social class at Yale four years ago: the luxury belief class. My confusion wasn't surprising given my unusual background. When I was two years old, my mother was addicted to drugs and my father abandoned us. I grew up in multiple foster homes, was then adopted into a series of broken homes, and then experienced a series of family tragedies. Later, after a few years in the military, I went to Yale on the GI Bill. On campus, I realized that luxury beliefs have become fashionable status symbols. Luxury beliefs are ideas and opinions that confer status on the rich at very little cost, while taking a toll on the lower class.

In the past, people displayed their membership of the upper class with their material accoutrements. But today, luxury goods are more affordable than before. And people are less likely to receive validation for the material items they display. This is a problem for the affluent, who still want to broadcast their high social position. But they have come up with a clever solution. The affluent have decoupled social status from goods, and re-attached it to beliefs.

The economist and social theorist Thomas Sowell once said that activism is "a way for useless people to feel important, even if the consequences of their activism are counterproductive for those they claim to be helping and damaging to the fabric of society as a whole." The same could be said for luxury beliefs. . . . A rich person flaunts her new belief. It then becomes fashionable among her peers, so she abandons it. Then a new stylish belief arises, while the old luxury belief trickles down the social hierarchy and wreaks havoc.

David Thompson has some further quotes in a post entitled, You Can't Afford My Radical Life. A sample:

Advocating for open borders and drug experimentation are good ways of advertising your membership of the elite because, thanks to your wealth and social connections, they will cost you less than me.

Unfortunately, the luxury beliefs of the upper class often trickle down and are adopted by people lower down the food chain, which means many of these beliefs end up causing social harm.

Take polyamory. I had a revealing conversation recently with a student at an elite university. He said that when he sets his Tinder radius to five miles, about half of the women, mostly other students, said they were "polyamorous" in their bios. Then, when he extended the radius to 15 miles to include the rest of the city and its outskirts, about half of the women were single mothers. The costs created by the luxury beliefs of the former are borne by the latter. Polyamory is the latest expression of sexual freedom championed by the affluent. They are in a better position to manage the complications of novel relationship arrangements. And if these relationships don't work out, they can recover thanks to their financial capability and social capital. The less fortunate suffer by adopting the beliefs of the upper class.

There are links to other posts on related themes.

There is a relationship here to the work of Charles Murray in Coming Apart. About the Quillette piece on Luxury Beliefs, he wrote:

My daughter's immigrant friend, asked during her dissertation defense why she had not dealt with the Marxist interpretation of her topic:

"I grew up in Eastern Europe during the Cold War. I do not indulge in recreational Marxism."

"Recreational Marxism." Heh.

Rob Henderson recognizes Murray's work:

Children living with both biological parents

Affluent families in 1960: 95%
Working class families in 1960: 95%

Affluent families in 2005: 85%
Working class families in 2005: 30%

Music

A little Eastern European music. Franz Liszt was a Hungarian nationalist who lived outside of Hungary for most of his life. Made his living mostly as a pianist until he was persuaded to spend more time composing. Lived with women he wasn't married to and had some kids, but they seem to have been taken care of, not by him, necessarily. Considered the priesthood from time to time.

Video made using Blender.

Hope you have a nice weekend. With a little luxury. Maybe not after the style of Liszt.

This is the Thread before the Gardening Thread.

4 Wonderful post KT! So true. We were in Eastern Europe a couple months ago and that's the prevailing attitude there. Communism just ended there 30 years ago, due in large part to Reagan. They look back and shudder. They never want a part of that again. It was so nice to be among a very warm people who felt the same as we do. Not so true for me in my home of SoCal. How about that?!?

10 I'm sure a high number of Hollywood writers come out of rich families, because they could afford to crank out screenplays and have endless rejections (which is typical I think) and endure that for years.

Watchmen is a great graphic novel, but the author seems to miss that an alternate history where a blue god wins the Vietnam war will kill fewer people, 2 million less than an American abandon. This fact might occur to Ozymandias or Night Owl, but so awful to Alan Moore that he can't deal with it. Fiction is strange.

13 I watched the Amazon version of "The Last Tycoon" recently. It's something of a travesty, compared to Fitzgerald's work.

Lots of pretty glitz, with actresses getting themselves into all sorts of situations that never smudge their makeup...

It strikes me how often we see these movies/teevee shows from the bygone eras, they love to show luxury, but if imagine these productions to be anything like real life, then you come to the conclusion that everyone of that time period was either a rich fatcat, or a bum living in squalor. There was no middle ground.

Oh, and sex? Nobody ever gets pregnant from sex. What a luxury!

17 Alabama is about to play their pre-Iron Bowl bums. This is normally an uninteresting game but considering Tua is out for the season, we will get a really good look at Mac Jones, 5star QB recruit. Alabama is still in the hunt for the playoffs, based on their record, but we will fail the "eye test" without Tua unless Mac steps up and shows that he really was a contender for the starting spot. Steve Sarkisian better let Mac run the whole offense, win or lose. None of this reduced playlist crap. It's Jones' time to step up and use that receiving corps he has.

Anyways, Roll Tide, Roll!

It's getting trendy among Portland "progressives" to announce that they are Communists. (Soviet flags are regularly flown at Portland Antifa events.)

The Portland metro area has tens of thousands of people who've lived under actual Communism - the Soviet Union, Vietnam, China.

It never occurs to the trendies to ask these people what actual Communism was like.

I was horrified that they were going to make school years even more turbulent just because they needed a new issue but had no idea at that time how many young lives they would ruin with the chemical/hormone stews to suppress biology when KIDS said they thought they were 'trans.' Its as barbaric as the ancient Romans and then the middle age Sultans castrating little boys to create eunuch's IMO.

Seconding GlassesUSA and Zenni, which can be as reasonably-priced as you choose. Make sure you deselect all the default coatings and choose cheap frames. Or, pick nice frames and whatever lenses you want, and it's still probably cheaper than a store.

Be sure to get your IPD or PD measurement noted on your prescription, when you get an exam. You'll need it for the online order and they don't always include it if you don't get fitted for frames at the shop.

38 "Recreational Marxism" hits the nail on the head.

I noticed in the replies to Murray's post, a lot of people are knocking the young lady for delivering a one-liner rather than actually engaging with Marxism as an academic theory. Which to a point is fair; if you're going to make a career in academia, Marxist or quasi-Marxist interpretations of X are so ingrained you're going to have to deal with it sooner or later. But what those people are missing is the fact that Marxism is a pose for anyone in higher ed who does mouth its platitudes.

Your sociology professor who confidently expresses the "Marxist interpretation of housing" isn't a proletarian; he makes up to $100,000+ if he's tenured and most likely lives in a gated neighborhood. They don't take it seriously, any more than the lady giving her dissertation does. Subscribing to it is a marker of noblesse oblige, nothing more.

Nothing has changed since the days of Radical Chic.

69 "Recreational Marxism" hits the nail on the head.

You are talking about a problem Ace has addressed here before, and is probably worth amplifying.

If you are fighting the academics, just as if you are fighting Hollowwwod, and fighting the lawfare warriors, the genderbenders, social media, the gay mafia, the gun grabbers... and on and on and on, they currently OWN the battlefield.

Which means, you have to battle them on THEIR terms, and having to use their methods, their ground rules, their language... they've already half won the battle.

I think we're at a point where ridicule and mockery are the best tools to use, and there are plenty (including our Ace) who do it well, to good effect.

108 from Merriam Webster:

CLERISY

English philosopher-poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) believed that if humanity was to flourish, it was necessary to create a secular organization of learned individuals, "whether poets, or philosophers, or scholars" to "diffuse through the whole community ... that quantity and quality of knowledge which was indispensable." Coleridge named this hypothetical group the clerisy, a term he adapted from Klerisei, a German word for clergy (in preference, it seems, to the Russian term intelligentsia which we borrowed later, in the early 1900s). Coleridge may have equated clerisy with an old sense of clergy meaning "learning" or "knowledge," which by his time was used only in the proverb "an ounce of mother wit is worth a pound of clergy."

113 When Trump said "I caught them all, I caught the swamp" he acknowledged that with the ongoing impeachment that the coup plotters, those involved in government graft, and those involved in covering it up (obstruction) have provided the needed evidence for their prosecution.

This process was started under Sleepy Sessions, who fooled them into thinking nothing was being done. It is true nothing was being by him on the Russian Collusion Hoax since he was recused, but the investigations into leaking leakers involved are many of the same folks. Barr will be able to bring it all down because Sessions investigated the coup from the leaking end, which was legal and ethical since he was investigating the ongoing crime of leaks from the federal government. Barr added the effort to find the Predicate for the Trump investigation.

Additionally, the FISA surveillance became a powerful tool for the Trump administration because FISA WORKS BOTH WAYS.

It's hard enough to follow proper procedures and processes when you are being honest, but when you are running a scam or a hoax but just one glitch will cause the whole thing to crash, no matter how many times everyone is instructed to commit sedition BY THE BOOK.

116 I think this observation explains why the Climate extremist movement has gotten so strong in places like the UK and Germany. Take the activists in London, for example: in the 19th century, they considered themselves the Capitol of the World. (they always were arrogant bastards) Now Great Britain has lost all of its colonies, they've lost the last bits of military power they once had, they've lost their financial muscle (American, China, and even India are much more important than they are) and they're left with a nation that is little more than Canada with castles

So what do they do? They buy into this ideology which tells that thet going out and shrieking on the street is going to make them IMPORTANT!!! again - even though getting rid of every possible source of industry in Great Britain today would not make a measurable difference to anything on a world wide scale. It's a psychological tantrum caused by their inability to deal with their loss of status, and lack of importance.

128 The stats on single parent family are alarming ... especially when viewed graphically. The hate for Murray and his objective exposure of the "war on white America" (I don't think he refers to it that way) extends back to his book The Bell Curve, which revealed that yes, genetics differ among races. By denying that reality we (academia/commies, actually) block objective solutions to social demands for "equality". It was one of many 2+2=5 moments for academia, demanding submission to "Diversity is our Strength" religion, versus logical defense of our nation/borders/trade.

imo, the family structure is natural, and community bonding also normal. It was the outsider Soviet infiltration that developed and deployed the schemes to destroy America from within ... infiltrating the White House, but also the culture via Hollywood, media, then the march through all institutions. The Family was a prime target, sexual "freedom" the seductive fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

The Luxury Beliefs may indeed be a real malady of the arrogant rich, but imo it is a weapon of mass social destruction, wielded by the true conspirators, carrying out their New World Order dreams. Or perhaps that whole NWO thing is itself a Luxury Belief, but mostly I think it is the various Government/Military Industrial Complexes, spread into academic fraud, and into the very structure of "global monetary policy". (now Google/FB/Twatter is "their" insidious weapon)

145 Luxury beliefs have always existed. Chivalry is very much a luxury belief- mostly adopted by the nobility to give a compassionate and Christian focus to their lives. Without it, you have a lot of violent hedge knights turning medieval Europe into a rapefest. Aka Game of Thrones. The beliefs separate the Upper Class from the Lower, and justifies the expropriation of the latter. Although the instincts of the old Christians are far more benevolent than modern bankster ethics.

Now things like minimum wage are used to deliberately hurt rural areas while not improving the lives of urban dwellers one jot, as automation takes over. Modern ethics have entered terminal convergence: attacking the values they once espoused as core beliefs. Donald Trump's brilliant exploitation of this divide is why he won. And will win.

Comprehensive News Report on China

----
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wMipdJGigM

Democrats and Republicans have done the unthinkable -- they worked
together! The Senate passed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act
and the PROTECT Hong Kong Act. Democrat Chuck Schumer ... agreeing with
Republican Ted Cruz! We live in a strange timeline. China was not too
happy. Especially since Senators also brought up the persecution of
Uighurs and the organ harvesting of Falun Gong practitioners. All the
bill need is for President Donald Trump to sign it into law.

Several companies make a soy-free sauce from the sap of coconut trees (Coconut Secrets, the brand I get at Target, is labeled Coconut Amino Acids). Our newest grandchild is very sensitive to soy -- even the small amount that passes through DIL's breastmilk -- so I have been using the Amino Acids to prepare both fresh and freezer meals for at least 6 months. DIL doesn't notice any difference in taste.

They sell bullets now that have a luminescent coating on the back end. The intense flash of the powder burning charges up this coating, and it emits light brilliantly for a fraction of a second, long enough to follow it downrange. Not tracer bullet; no combustion going on, so not a fire hazard.

Of course they did.

Its an empty virtue signal, just like the above post was talking about.

There is not a damn thing we can do about China and Hong Kong.

At this point? its like if the Chinese or Russians decided to help San Francisco be independent from the US.

The time to do something was BEFORE the Brits handed Hong Kong over to China.

Now, as much as we will wring our hands about the treatment of Hong Kong citizens, short of WAR with China? Not a dang thing we can do but send virtue signals.

Which this is.

250 Someone record some fake radio announcements that Warren has won the 2020 election and get it played in RBG's hospital room.

That was a mystery story I read once. Terminal ill husband was hanging on until Xmas or something and their life insurance would expire at that time leaving her needing to keep the house (clause in will that she couldn't sell it, had to live there or it went to boyscouts). Wife tears pages off the calendar early so he quits clinging on and she gleefully imagines the boy scouts rampaging thru the house while she enjoys life in a condo.

257 In all seriousness, though, I feel bad for her. It's all she has. It's her only true love. Family and grandkids, and she can't leave the court because the place she urinates from (well, used to) was so meaningful to her that she wanted someone who urinated similarly to appoint another similarly qualified justice. And now she has to rot there instead of napping on the couch at her grandkids' home.

It's not going to make me stop making fun of her as a politician (and she very much is), but it's tragic to see that happen to a human.
