Advanced Problem - Black To Play (1066)

Black is in bad shape. Yes, he's got the R+R v. R+B advantage, but White's connected advanced pawns are crushing. How does Black avoid losing?

(h/t to the lurking chess moron who sent this one to me last month)

Answer:

Sometimes you have to figure out how to eke out a draw in a seemingly lost position. Fortunately for Black, his King is in a near-stalemate position, which allows him to attack with impunity.

1...Ra8+!
2.Kxa8

Forced, of course.

2...Rb8+
3.Ka7

White can't take the Rook because that would be stalemate. All he can do is move out of the way. But Black can still chase him around.

3...Rb7+
4.Ka6 Rb6+
5.Ka5 Rb5+
6.Ka4 Rb4+
7.Ka3 Rb3+
8.Ka2 Rb2+
9.Ka1 Rb1+

Black can keep White's king pinned to the a-file with endless checks. As long as he does, it's a draw.

Perpetual checks and stalemates should be in your tactical toolbox to be used in tricky endgames when it looks like all is lost.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

43 Game thread!

The big news last week was Google Stadia. Rather, the upcoming week since it is scheduled for 19 November. It's a game streaming service.

Yong Yea and Jim Sterling have called shenanigans on this service as it stands now. Questions haven't been answered about how well it will work on household machines.

The main problem is that Stadia flat doesn't support very many games. Only TWELVE as of 19 November. And they're old games which can be streamed already. And Google're asking $60 to play them. Not to own them...

The new Tomb Raider series is okay (at least the first one), and Red Dead Redemption 2 is a classic. And they're planning to make the new Doom available... next year. Same with Cyberpunk 2077.

Looks more like Google sta-DOA, as Yong Yea puts it.

I made it back to Maryhill Museum last weekend. The chess set display remains amazing. They have switched some of the displays about but my favorite remains the ceramic, Socialists v Capitalists, from the bad old days when the USSR was a thing over there. It was the last weekend open until April.
Also checked out the nearby winery. That was both good and expensive.

I have always loved them, I don't care what anyone says.

Also, they were offered $750,000,000.00 some years ago to get together and play a few shows again, but turned that down.

Name another band who has been offered that kind of coin to do a short reunion tour.

Also, Holy Shit, they must really hate each other.

An Infamous Army being a great book for learning about the battle. At one time it was used at Sandhurst to teach about the battle. Very well researched and very detailed. May still be used. Heyer was very good at historical detail.

I'm with you, Jewells. I don't like either dress. I don't like that sunny yellow color on many people and that material just looks way too couchy. Melania's dress is shapeless, even on her voluptuous figure. They both dress impeccably nearly 100% of the time, but missed the mark on both of these.

Unfortunately this...

This was always going to be a tough one for Trump to stick his nose into - Edwards is a staunch pro-life Catholic (in Louisiana, a must), pro-gun, pretty conservative, fairly popular, and former military. I went to college here and know what these folks liked then - and Edwards is just not offending any of that - I doubt much has changed. Bel Edwards is pretty good at retail politics with the Cajuns who hold the key to this state. And this state is one of the last to hold to the Democrat Old South as long as that Dem is catholic.

I think it will be a close loss for Rispone.

If Marshall Ney had done his job and kept his army between Waterloo and the Prussian column (army), then Napoleon might have won at Waterloo.
It was a near run thing. The Prussians arrived late in the day, and over ran an exhausted French army that had been fighting the Brits all day.

And, taxes aside, he's plenty conservative in the right areas for Louisiana, and that's the problem - you can't keep running Treen type Republican candidates in Louisiana hoping for the same outcome - they like their candidates larger than life - Edwin Edwards won time and again on that principle alone.

Kaepernick made a big deal about doing a workout for NFL teams. The NFL set it up for him and 25 teams agreed to attend. At the last minute he insisted on having his own film crew. Because he didn;t get his way, he pulled out. This guy doesn't want to play. He just wants attention

260 I have a question about the CSS Virginia and the USS Monitor.

Which was the better design? I always liked the Virginia but the Monitor looked to be the cheaper way to go.

Posted by: Hairyback Guy at November 16, 2019 07:14 PM

---

The Monitor couldn't handle rough water, she would founder. But she was a tougher smaller target to hit and her two guns could bear in any direction by rotating the turret. The Virginia had more guns but was a huge target that could handle rougher seas.

IOW, it's a wash.

The gun box took some direct hits, but all they did was make shallow dents.
Posted by: atilla the thrilla at November 16, 2019 07:30 PM (w7KSn)

The problem with the turret is they did not have time to really test it and they had difficulty controlling the rotation, stopping it fire accurately.

Marshall Ney had done his job and kept his army between Waterloo and
the Prussian column (army), then Napoleon might have won at Waterloo.

It was a near run thing. The Prussians arrived late in the day, and

day.

Later when Ney showed up, the battle was lost.

The staged "ovation" for the cry-baby former ambassador is what the media can do for you, if only you give them the stage and the chance - and Schiff just keeps falling thru the trap door into the garbage chute and out into the theater parking lot.

France was done as a power at that point. Napoleon had exhausted the supply of French manpower and had taken so many casualties in the preceding years that the majority of his Army was conscripts with minimal training.

The Old Guard was a shell of it's former self and broke for the first time at Waterloo. The Middle and Young Guard were Guard units in name only by that time. His Army was pretty much done in 1815

I think Buttgig is making his move.

I saw his commercial during the 'Horns game.

Very well made (dammit!0 and who ever he's working with is smart enough to realize that one of the main reasons people like Trump is that he fights.

Buttgig's talking to a cheering fake crowd in the commercial, and he essentially sez "Oh, I'll fight. When it's right to fight. But, we(royal we) must never let fighting take control of what we do."

Something to that effect.

So, trying to undercut Trump's support and scoop it up cuz he'll "fight' "smarter" and bring us all together instead of dividing us.

Smart use of Democrat memes. This guy may wind up being the Dims candidate.

On the other hand, Bidet had a really old style lame-ass commercial where he's talking about how dangerous the world is cuz OrangemanBad!!!

351 Armored turret, rotated by twin steam engines, mounting muzzleloading retractable naval guns, firing through gun ports with swinging shutters.
Posted by: hogmartin at November 16, 2019 07:55 PM (t+qrx)

It was an amazing design - no one had ever built a rotating turret for their guns before the Monitor, up until then you had to maneuver the entire ship to aim your guns. And iirc, I believe the original Monitor turret had a 360 degree rotation.

Also, it used many of the principles that went into the first submarines, it's deck was only 2 or 3 feet above the water making it very hard to hit in battle. Well, the downside is obvious, that's why the original model ended up on the seafloor.

359 Who do you think is cute or pretty?
Posted by: Blonde Morticia at November 16, 2019 08:01 PM (13CQC)

Now that is an interesting question. First, personality has so much to do with that it is hard to say outright.

Second, were Kate not a princess and everyone was not going off about how pretty she is I would never think to comment about whether or not she was cute.

Third, as I have gotten older I have gone from having a singular ideal as to what was attractive or unattractive to having more of an appreciation of someone being their best. Does that make sense?

The comments about Kate are similar to those that were made about the mooch. They are kind of rebelling against everyone trying to shove the notion down our throats that the are beautiful, even when they are not.

Kate is not ugly, she is definitely in the top half of humanity as attractiveness goes, but she is definitely in the top 10 percent.

The question of who I find beautiful or attractive is complicated because I tend to be skeptical of everyone that everyone insists is attractive.

My rule of thumb is that you should make your "hot or not" determination after hosing someone down with a garden hose so the advantages of expensive wardrobe and make up have bee minimized.

375 Marshall Ney had done his job and kept his army between Waterloo and
the Prussian column (army), then Napoleon might have won at Waterloo.

It was a near run thing. The Prussians arrived late in the day, and
over ran an exhausted French army that had been fighting the Brits all
day.

Later when Ney showed up, the battle was lost.

Posted by: Bozo Conservative....outlaw in America at November 16, 2019 07:30 PM (Wmf3G)

But even if the French won at Waterloo was it just delaying the inevitable? Considering the losses France had suffered since the Russian campaign and that most of Europe was arrayed against him and hellbent on being rid of him once and for all
Posted by: TheQuietMan at November 16, 2019 07:40 PM (UDinV)

Ney was at Waterloo, screwing up the attack in the center of the line.

Grouchy was the cavalry dunce who let the Prussians walk by him to Waterloo.

And yes, if Nappy had won at Waterloo he had several hundred thousand Austrians and then Russians to beat, so barring a miracle like the one that saved Freddie the Great, it would have just extended the war for 6 months to a year.

420 There have long been story's in North Caroline of a mysterious boys school master named Peter Ney, a frenchman of great intelligence and skill who seemed to have no past, and who would never speak of his. yes, yes, Marshall Ney was executed - but then again, was that really him, or was there a last minute secret switch?

One good story from a school where Peter Ney was teaching math - a young, vigorous french fencing instructor had been hired to teach the boys, and he was widely reputed to be a master at the sport. For fun, the much older Peter Ney challenged him to a public fencing contest, where he defeated the younger man almost effortlessly.

423 We're going to dinner.

Here's my "Dr Sleep" review for Movie Thread-

Saw "Dr Sleep" this week

I have to say I enjoyed it, which I did not expect.

The script corrected or minimized a lot of the defects of the novel.

The all powerful Mary Sue issue still exists, but is tempered a bit. and Dan Torrance is allowed his moment to shine(!).

Not really a horror movie. Sort of a "The Shining" influenced supernatural thriller. And in that, not truly a sequel to The Shining.

Well directed. Very good acting all around. Nice script with some nice moments and set pieces. Very well-paced, no slow moments.

Fake Shelley Duval and Faux Jack Nicholson are a bit distracting but you roll with it. Fake Scatman Crothers is dead on.

If you have a Shoe Size IQ, you will still see the ending coming from a mile away. But, it's well done.

Check it out.

The appointment wasn't on his weekend public schedule that was released Friday night, and his last physical was in February. Press secretary Stephanie Grisham said the 73-year-old Trump was "anticipating a very busy 2020" and wanted to take advantage of "a free weekend" in Washington to begin "portions of his routine" checkup.

428 Was away for a bit. I've been to the Stonehenge at Maryhill as well. Quietly awesome. Overlooks the river and the bronze plates name the men of Klickitat County who died in WW I.
The museum reflects Sam Hill's friendship with Renoir, Queen Marie of Romania and is an okay display for same.
The grounds are indeed gorgeous. I have camped at the campground along the river. No more. Too noisy from the train traffic.
I did see the transit of Mercury across the sun through the telescope at the Goldendale Observatory. That was very cool.

500 377 I must be slow today, but I'm not seeing a "forced" mate in 3 on the Beginner problem. What's wrong with
1. Be6+ Qxe6+
2. Pxe6 (or Rxe6) ...

White will win eventually, but it'll take more than 3 moves. What am I missing?

Posted by: Sun-Tzu's Shih-Tzu at November 16, 2019 08:21 PM (4tV+0)

You're absolutely right. I should've spent more time checking the solution. Your line results in a mate in 8:

1.Be6+ Qxe6+
2.dxe6 Kf8
3.e7+ Kf7
4.e8=Q+ Kxe8
5.Rxg7 Kf8
6.Rc7 Kg8
7.Rxd6 c3
8.Rd8#

So it's not a forced mate in 3. Good catch.

501 Yeah well, saying she's practically hideous doesn't make it so either. Jesus.

She's not hideous, but not really stunning, either. Fair to middling.

502 Also, it used many of the principles that went into the first submarines, it's deck was only 2 or 3 feet above the water making it very hard to hit in battle. Well, the downside is obvious, that's why the original model ended up on the seafloor.

They should have packed all the empty space with empty plastic soda bottles.

504 Re 500: I'm not sure that white even gets a mate, on that line of play.
1. Be6+ Qxe6+
2. dxe6 Kf8
3. e7+ BUT Kxe7 instead
then if
4. Rxg7+ Kf8 ( and white has to retreat or lose the g file rook)

Any other move by white at 4. then .... Bxh6 reduces white to 1 rook and black can escape and move his pawns.
If white retreats the rook from g7, black can likely escape to some sanctuary among his pawns.
I cannot see exactly how that would work out, as it would not be forced.
But this situation is not mate in 3 nor mate in 8.
