THE QUOTES OF THE DAY

Quote I

Humanity has unquestionably one really effective weapon—laughter. Power, money, persuasion, supplication, persecution—these can lift at a colossal humbug—push it a little—weaken it a little, century by century, but only laughter can blow it to rags and atoms at a blast. Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand. — Mark Twain

Quote II

As of September of this year, the Senate had been forced to invoke cloture on 236 Trump nominees — each of those representing its own massive consumption of legislative time meant only to delay an inevitable confirmation. How many times was cloture invoked on nominees during President Obama’s first term? 17 times. The Second President Bush’s first term? Four times. It is reasonable to wonder whether a future President will actually be able to form a functioning administration if his or her party does not hold the Senate. Attorney General William Barr

Quote III

“Respect is a cardinal value in our society. As public officials, we must be exemplary.”French Cultural Minister, Franck Riester

Quote IV

We all talk about Trump as an “existential threat” but his side sees Democratic control of government the exact same way. And when both sides believe the other guy taking over means the end of the world, yes, you can have a civil war. Trump rallies are filled with words like “enemies of the people,” “human scum.” They talk of people to be locked up. Well, you can’t lock all us up. Liberals are described as weak, lame, coddling, oversensitive, and limp-dicked.

Which are strong words for a bunch of mouth-breathers, shit kickers, knuckle draggers, bible thumpers, sister-fuckers and rubes Bill Maher

Doesn't he have some bootleg booze to peddle? Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is an avid anti-vaxxer.

Just two organizations were responsible for the majority of anti-vaccine advertisements on Facebook before the social media giant restricted such content in March of this year, according to a November 13 study in the journal Vaccine.

As anti-vax movement gets weirder—and dumber—Facebook announces crackdown
Of 145 anti-vaccine Facebook advertisements that ran between May 31, 2017 and February 22, 2019, the World Mercury Project and a group called Stop Mandatory Vaccination together ran 54% of them.

The World Mercury Project, which ran the most ads of any single source, is an organization closely aligned with the anti-vaccine group Children's Health Defense. Both are spearheaded by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an environmental lawyer turned prolific peddler of dangerous anti-vaccine misinformation. He and his organizations promote conspiracy theories about vaccine safety, including the roundly debunked claim that safe, life-saving immunizations are linked to autism. More recently, Kennedy has become a prominent opponent of laws aimed at increasing vaccination rates among school children.

The NFL continues to be a laughing stock. Ungrateful bastard is given a break by the NFL.

It’s not often that the NFL holds a special workout for an unemployed player during Week 11 of the regular season.

But then again, former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is not like most players, thanks to the massive media attention and controversy constantly swirling around him.

Kaepernick, who last threw a meaningful NFL pass on New Year’s Day 2017, was firmly back in the spotlight this week when news broke that he would be participating in a special workout in front of NFL personnel.

Rumor has it that Stevie Wonder is the NFL's pass interference replay official.

Good work if you can get it. The Rev. Al hits one hell of a pay day.

Last year, Sharpton’s National Action Network — a non-profit linked to the Freddy’s Fashion Mart massacre and anti-Semitic Muslim Rep. Rashida Tlaib — paid him $1,046,948, according to tax filings reviewed by the New York Post.

“Sharpton got a $324,000 salary — 32% higher than his 2017 pay — in addition to a $159,596 bonus and $563,352 in ‘other compensation,'” the Post reported.

The nonprofit reportedly claimed the extra money was simply money it owed him as per the work he’d done for it between 2004 and 2017. He was “underpaid and received no bonus,” the Harlem-based group said in a statement to the Post.

“NAN said it hired an executive compensation firm that determined the good reverend was owed $1.252 million — but he was generously willing to take $500,000 less,” the Post added.

Former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg is sorry that he made NYC safe. Pandering without giving away the treasury.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has yet to formally announce whether he will run for president in 2020, but during remarks where he looked to the future before a majority-black church in Brooklyn, he apologized for his controversial “stop and frisk” policy that sowed distrust of police in black and Latino communities during his administration.

That policy, which was later repealed, allowed police to stop individuals on the street and briefly question and frisk them if they had reasonable suspicion that the person may be committing, had committed or is about to commit a crime. During his Sunday speech, Bloomberg recognized that this led to “far too many innocent people” being stopped, many of them black or Latino.

“Over time I’ve come to understand something that I’ve long struggled to admit to myself,” Bloomberg told congregants at the Christian Cultural Center in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn. “I got something important wrong. I got something important really wrong.”

Even Old Testament folks said no Christmas music before Thanksgiving.

Scholars all over the world now believe that King Saul actually threw a spear at David after the young musician insisted on playing Christmas music well before Thanksgiving.

It was early November, just after Halloween and still a couple weeks before Thanksgiving, and David played Christmas music, even though it wasn't really even close to December yet.

"If you play 'Little Drummer Boy' one more time, I'm going to pin you to the wall," King Saul reportedly growled. "I double-dog dare you."

David continued happily playing Christmas song after Christmas song, from "The Christmas Shoes" to "Here Comes Santa Claus." The last straw came when David started in on "Last Christmas," and Saul went into a blinding rage. He grabbed a spear and hurled it at David.

"NO MORE MR. NICE SAUL!" Saul screamed as he hurled the ranged weapon at David's face. "Make it stop!"

Looks like the current pope missed Genesis in Theology 101.

Genesis 1:26-28 King James Version (KJV)
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Repeat after me, marijuana is not heroin. Marijuana is not heroin. Genius Award Winner.

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - The Marijuana Control Board unanimously voted to revoke a marijuana handler’s permit for a man charged with trying to import heroin to Nome.

On Oct 29, Quincy James Iyatunguk, 28, was arrested at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport with 8.8 grams of heroin. Alaska State Troopers say the heroin had been concealed internally.

The amount of heroin was said to make 88 individual doses and was valued at roughly $10,560, according to troopers.

On Wednesday, members of the Marijuana Control Board considered whether or not to take Iyatunguk’s handler permit. Members of the board say he was a manager at Good Leaf, a Nome-based marijuana store.

When arrested, Iyatunguk was transporting marijuana to Nome. Erika McConnell, the former director of the Alcohol and Marijuana Control Office, says the marijuana “did not state the correct manufacturer.”

The marijuana was taken back to Good Weeds, a store based out of Anchorage.

A young man and hero bags are Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Tyler Stallings was 4 years old when he first learned that some veterans are homeless.

Veterans are part of the Maryland boy's extended family and he always thought of them as heroes. Homeless veterans didn't make sense to him.
He wanted to do something to help them right away, so he asked his mom if he could build houses for them. At such a young age, he wasn't in the best position to start building houses.

It would be happier if he had the fruit of the spirit as he isn't a man who seems to have love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness and self control. 83 I love fall and winter in the south. The leaves here in coastal GA are changing, the weather is chilly, and we can take a breather from the tropics getting sporty. Except yesterday, we had a system sitting over us giving us gale force winds and sideways rain.

Fall and winter here don't last long enough, to me.

89 Regarding Bob Lazar. There's nothing in nuclear physics to suggest that any hypothetical heavy elements would have anti-gravity properties. The idea that "element 115" could power alien spacecraft smacks of magical thinking.

91 Goodness Pope Francis is embarrassing.
Posted by: Tonypete at November 17, 2019 10:02 PM (Y4EXg)

If you go to the website "Church militant" they go "off" about Pope Francis. I find their articles themselves interesting if depressing but sometimes I find the comments a bit much, because I'm not really into people that call clergy from other denominations "People engaging in dress up who have no authority." I wouldn't call "dress up" it you're anointing the dying or bringing sick people Holy Communion, but of course I have a biased view on this. I also don't think it' really helpful for the RC hardliners to say
"Protestant heretics have nothing to say to me!!"
Really? "Orthodox" small "O" We believe in the Trinity and much of the theology Catholics believe in and we have nothing to say to each others. Seems as if it would be better to concentrate on our areas of agreement than where we disagree.

107 Maher's particular kind of sickness is so rank, that even were he to take in the entirety of a Texas Mo Meet, from first day to last, it wouldn't make one single positive impression on him.

Fact is though, even Rancher Bob's dogs are better men than Maher could ever hope to be.

And I say that with all due apologies to the dogs, for even using them in that comparison.

People like Maher are impervious to facts, reason, logic, evidence and reality itself, as it unfolds before their very eyes.

What they see, and what we see, are two entirely separate things.

Alas, what they see is thoroughly tainted by their PC filters, revisionist histories and sick, twisted conviction that "whiteness" (especially the male version thereof) is the root of all evil.

It's not that they threaten our "way of life". It's that they threaten our very lives.

I do not intend to allow them to make good on that threat.

In my area, at least 40% of the dogs in rescues are pit bulls. It is reaching a point where if you want a dog from the county animal shelter, if you want a nice, small mutt, good luck.

I just wish these organizations would be more honest when they push people to adopt rescue dogs.

I got my beagle over ten years ago, and I had to go from one rescue to another, and from one animal shelter to another. The trashiest, most irresponsible people out there are breeding pit bulls like there's no tomorrow and the shelters are overflowing with them.

The fabric of society feels very thin to me right now. In the last few weeks, I have been attacked on here by people I considered friends. I have been yelled at in public by strangers. I've been subtweeted up the wazoo. It's tiring.

Her crime? Stating that:

Here's the thing: shutting down existing nuclear plants has led to increased emissions when it has happened in Germany, California, and likely Vermont. I don't want carbon emissions to go up. That is a very real risk for example in NY state right now.

For daring to notice the obvious consequence that fossil-fuel electrical generation goes up when you shut down nuclear plants (which has been extensively documented), left-wing Twitter has viciously turned on her.

Well, that's the beauty of the term "climate change".
Everything that happens with the weather can be attributed to "climate change".
Snow in Michigan in November? Climate change.
No snow in Michigan in December? Climate change.
Tornado in May? Climate change.

The environmental hysterics went from "Global Warming" to "Climate Change", and the liberals were too dumb to see that they were being played for suckers.

meanwhile we're importing pure- and cross-breed "rescues" from Eastern Europe, for some reason. I'm sure there's nothing hinky about THAT at all

216 I heard Korngold's violin concerto again not long ago. It has begun to "enter the repertoire." But Korngold was a prodigy composer, and had written a couple of huge avant-garde operas in the 1920's, before fortune changed Europe and he became a film composer. He died in 1955, with his major works forgotten, and I reckon a little bitter about it.

The piece cited above has gotten a little "recital" play in recent years. Just this year, Bard College (which we all love to hate) had an opera fest and revived his other major work, Das Wunder der Heliane.

The Wall Street Journal and several papers were there to review it, and it is of course seriously weird, because hey, avant-garde 20th century opera. His other work, especially in film, is so goddam superb that I would love to get the chance to hear it for myself, if for no other reason than to make up for the absolutely crappy deal he got from the exigencies of history.

But maybe we can just make some jokes about him because nobody gives a shit.

the other example of "good intentions" leading to bad results was the very emotionally appealing concept of "no kill" shelters

great idea

now every shelter anymore is 99 percent unadaptable pit bulls

our shelter begs for foster homes for any non-pits. which means you have to basically be constantly available to bring the dog over or have random strangers in your house etc

they have to outsource the "sheltering" part b/c they are full up with terrifying former dogfighters. they'll even foster out the non-psychotic pits, the poor things.

when before the really scary ones that weren't adoptable were... well... I mean this isn't better than that was!

My favorite breed ever was the German Shorthair Pointer. I had several growing up and used to hunt with them. Sweet, smart and easy to live with. But they need to do stuff, so the Chow is easier for the non-hunting lifestyle. Chows can live in cities, even, they don't need a lot of space or exercise.

What people refuse to face up to, is that breeds of dogs were deliberately bred, often over hundreds of years, to have certain personality traits and characteristics. Dog fighting breeds were bred to attack other dogs. Guard dog breeds, such as Rottweilers and akitas, were bred to protect by attacking anyone they view as a threat.

These dogs shouldn't be owned by half-baked owners like myself, who aren't totally firm and consistent.

224 Cicero right now we have both Beach and Fire weather.

Rifle match cancelled this AM ["red flag" fire warning], afternoon did nice walk on the beach. Even for here, this kind of weather in November is kind of amazing. Beach was fairly crowded. Water temp's gone down, due to the wind presumably.

Lifeguards were up to old tricks [to manage/manipulate people], with a new twist. Warning over loudspeaker about developing rip currents [none were visible, and tide timing made them very unlikely]. Twist was reminder to shuffle feet when walking back in [sting rays]. Never heard that one over the PA before, though it's been conventional wisdom for beach/ocean people for decades.

I gather it's not 82 clear and dry everywhere in the country? Did see something on the big screen at the Mexican seafood place showing what looked like weather back east.

I ran into all above requirements when I tried to adopt an english setter or english setter mix from setter rescues. Plus they would not adopt in Fl. Too far. Frustating.

Ended finding the sweetest field english setter at a pointer rescue about four hours from us. We drove to them and back in one day to bring her home. She was super skinny and had been shot at with what the vet thinks was a bb gun (?). Had a sore on one paw from stress licking her paw raw. She was 18 months old at the time.
She has blossomed. She is a gorgeous english setter and a wonderfully sweet and playful dog. We got lucky finding her but it was a lot of work and a pinch of luck.

262 Chinese braised pork belly from earlier this week:
https://tinyurl.com/s52r2pt

Pork belly used to be give away, now it's up to $4/pound, including the skin! Still, very large amount of meat versus what the thieves call bacon these days. Used a 2.5 pound piece, or twice what the recipe called for. Three good manly servings worth. Skin baked to crispy lechon strips for dog treats.

Recipe: used standard amount given rather than doubling the amount given double the meat. It was good. Next time I would use double spices though, save as below.

Rock sugar, no have, used brown cane sugar, about a golf balls worth. Could have used a bit more.

5 spice, I would use 1/2 the amount even with double the meat, for western tastes. We use a pretty aggressive asian made 5 spice, stuff made here may be less powerful.

Used 1 larger star anise rather than 2. A little goes a long way.

Cooked the sauce down a little too far before spooning off the fat, so thinned it with tamari soy sauce which worked and also improved the flavor, likely reflecting the spice:meat ratio as above.

Served with jasmine rice, blanched baby bok choy and a hard boiled egg.

Verdict: Keeper. Adjust as above. Could also be done with a pressure cooker although the slow long timing I think will deepen the flavor. Could also be done with larger chunks of meat in a crock pot and that is what I will try next.

me and the missus have different ideas about camping. For me it's about how long it would take to get back to a town before I bleed out.

For her it's about the quality of the breakfast layout.

But, then I took her into the Bighorns, and we shared a camp site with a mama moose and her calf. Mrs. Mahon loved it.

She also loved seeing the night sky, more stars than she has ever seen.

VETOED!

No proper outdoors oriented Mo Meet can rightfully exist in an area where the free use of arms is prohibited.

I'd be all for a "camping" Mo Meet.

Doing so in conjunction with the Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot would be fun, but impossible. All the camping sites are booked years in advance.

But, that'd be the general idea of it, anyway.

The site of the Tx Mo Meet in Corsicana might prove amenable to a fleet of RVs and pitched tents. If not on the ranch itself, well hell, there's no shortage of RV parks and campsites in the area.

Just meetup at the ranch for your daily dosage of shooty goodness, incredible food, endless drinks and wonderful company.

But NO "State" or "National" parks.

They might welcome us, but they damn sure don't welcome our interests or activities.

Ahwanee starts at close to $400 a night. Grand Canyon depends on which hotel you book into, but you can easily match the Ahwanee for cost. You're less likely to get arrested using the wrong pronouns at the Grand Canyon, so there is a bail differential to consider.

Let's see. Publish location and date for REMOTE Mo Meet. Dry camping. Distant services.

RSVPs? Half-dozen? Dozen?

Actual arrivals? Uh huh.

I'll stick with the Tx Mo Meet, but would also gladly attend the Ohio venue, (mostly held at a pub, but with shooting at a formal facility earlier in the day, as I understand it?)

And I'd go to an East Coast or Mid-Atlantic Mo Meet, just because of longstanding nics in the Horde.

Don't know how I'd blend a CA/CO Mo Meet, but there needs to be one, such.

And yes, the Frozen North needs be represented, too.

I'd wager that campsites 'round Sturgis would be damn near free, on non-Bike Week dates.

Splendorous scenery, plenty of services, bargain-basement rates from near-desperate retailers grasping for sales after the half-million bikes depart the A/O, and excellent roads leading to and from.

Bet it would take small effort too, finding out a welcoming place to put tens of thousands of rounds downrange.

Used to live a bit south of Sturgis.

The area is used for a few other things when the bikes are gone, but not much.

Close to TRULY beautiful areas.

Shooting, zero problems, and Black Hills Ammunition would probably bring a supply trailer. Seriously.

Rapid City airport is a treat to get in/out of with firearms. All the TSA dudes are shooters. Nearly painless.

Fly in, rent an RV - yes you can do this any day of the week - and it's Rolling Thunder RV style.

Or camp, fabulous places around there.

Good idea Jim, as usual...

336 Well, I gave the F150 a bath, and vacuumed dog hair and sand out of the interior, and took some pics, and put it up for sale on a classified ad site. Will see if I get any bites on it. It runs fine, but it is surplus to my real needs, and my original intent in getting it was to fix it up for resale. As a truck, it makes a very nice comfy touring car. The pickup box is a joke.

And I made more progress on the poor wretched Panhard. Front floor mats are back in, both floorboard and toeboard, with plastic bubble insulating sheet under them. Front seat is back in, and the slide rails work. And the seat belts are in, and bolted through the floor (and through the added U-channel below) with 7/16" fine thread bolts, double-nutted. It's really starting to look like a car again.

The opposite, actually. Shi Tzus are midget Ewoks who have given up the way of the Shelf and the Spear.

Once they learned that smiling and wagging was the way to a bottomless food bowl and access to warm laps, well, they did what Darwin predicted.

They ADAPTED.

Challenge to qdpsteve.

Put together well-organized, quality gathering with a solid agenda in the Sturgis area, non Bike Week.

I *will* purchase or rent a Class A RV, just to make it to the event. And it'll be weighted down to the axles with arms, ammo and related gear.

Not to mention, food, bourbon and cigars.

I don't think you're gonna get this done for the 2020 RV and camping season. You've got a world of work ahead of you on this.

Pull it off for 2021 though, and you'll achieve Horde Immortality.

Frustrated with your family's indecision, infidelity and disrespect?

This then is your chance to rise above, and to shine.

Accept this mantle, heavy though it may be, and may Glory rest upon you in the end.

Do the Horde proud sir, and kick this thing's ass.

I'll help. You can count on that.

If anyone wants a true camping adventure, report to my place and off we go into the Alaska wilderness.

Let me know when you are coming and how much parking space you need, and I will set it up.

We have a 1988 Holiday Rambler, the darned thing is 34 feet long and has a couple of extra sleeping spaces if that's what you need instead. Plus we have a tent, and.... well, if you really want to come, we can do this.

Rushmore, Devils Tower, the Black Hills, Custer State Park and the Badlands it's pretty crowded in the summer. Plus bike week, can make getting reservations crazy. We'll be in Alaska this summer from May until end of August but we'd be there in 2021.

Sadly, I can't drive up the ACLAN whilst laden with arms, ammo and such.

A "declared" hunting rifle or shotgun, in Customs Sealed cases, checked and inspected on either end? Sure, yah, okay.

But dozens of rifles, a bushel of handguns and twenty-thousand rounds of ammo?

Yeah, they're gonna LOVE me and my RV at the Canuck border to the ALCAN.

405 I met Bob Lazar a few time in the late 90s. This was for an annual pyrotechnics event near Las Vegas called Desert Blast. I was introduced to this by a much younger friend who'd become friendly enough with Lazar that we were among a group who went to his house before driving out to the dry lake bed where things would start late at night.
It seemed Lazar wanted to keep his UFO notoriety apart from his recreational activities like Desert Blast. On the page of rules for the event, most of the 20-odd entries end with "or we will shoot you." This included "Do not try to talk to Bob about UFOs or we will shoot you."
Desert Blast was a lot of fun but I had no interest in going again after my friend died in a car crash in 2000. I think Lazar's claims about Area 51 and UFOs are utter nonsense but the event was fun.

Well George Washington did establish the precedence that 2 terms as President was enough. It took many years and commie FDR to eradicate that. As for congress their vision was 2 years in the House and the member would then retire back to his farm or business. And only one 6 year term in the Senate. Too bad they did not put that in the constitution.

490 Creeper,

This is my usual rant. In my chemistry days we were scourged if we neglected mechanisms. We were trained to predict where all the electrons went in a reaction. Drop this reactant in a flask containing the following, and tell us what happens.

When I was off the coast of Lebanon, watching the Israelis shell it, and then later on port visits to Communist Yugoslavia, Sicily, and Napoli, I wondered what mechanisms undergirded the fate of Nations. So that has been a hobby of mine for a while. Now it has become a means of avoiding the consequences of my research.

It is personal.

Stately VIA Manor really isn't that stately, unless one considers 1,200 square foot to be stately.

And I have always promised Mrs VIA that our final home would have the kitchen that she desires.

And I need two car garage.

Not counting the in ground pool.

I remember when my 2 nieces were in college, and of course, this being the early 2000's, were given a credit card when they showed up. In a year, they had both rung up a nice debt. So, they came home on spring break and thought they'd hit up my mom for some cash. They called and explained the problem, mom told them to come on over. They arrived expecting to be given a check, and instead, mom had carefully cut out articles from Money magazine on how to reduce their credit card debt and handed it to them

528 I see where the NFL held a one-person job fair for an out of work former football player.

I would bet that this was a demand made by Nike on the NFL. Considering the attention span of today's culture, sitting out for a couple years places a sports figure in the "Who?" column. Nike has a brand image that needs maintenance.

Heck, five years from now most people will forget who Tom Brady is.

Individual doses of heroin do not cost $120. That's about 10x overestimation of the value of those drugs, even in AK. It would be nice if police/prosecutors didn't dishonestly overcharging people just to have somewhere to go in plea negotiations.
