THE SATURDAY NIGHT JOKE

Ed and Linda met on a singles cruise and Ed fell head over heels for her. When they discovered they lived in the same city, only a few miles apart, Ed was ecstatic. He immediately started asking her out when they got home.

Within a couple of weeks, Ed had taken Linda to dance clubs, restaurants, concerts, movies, and museums. Ed became convinced that Linda was indeed his soul mate and true love.

Every date seemed better than the last. On the one-month anniversary of their first dinner on the cruise ship, Ed took Linda to a fine restaurant. While having cocktails and waiting for their salad, Ed said, "I guess you can tell I'm very much in love with you. I'd like a little serious talk before our relationship continues. So, before I get a box out of my jacket and ask you a life changing question, it's only fair to warn you, I'm a total golf nut. I play golf, I read about golf, I watch golf on TV. In short, I eat, sleep, and breathe golf. If that's going to be a problem for us, you'd better say so now!"

Linda paused, then responded, "Ed, that certainly won't be a problem. I love you as you are and I love golf too; but, since we're being totally honest with each other, you need to know that for the last five years I've been a hooker."

Ed said, "It's probably because you're not keeping your wrists straight when you hit the ball."

Talk about a student who really applied himself. Medieval executioner. H/T Anonosaurus Wrecks

One afternoon in May 1573, a 19-year-old man named Frantz Schmidt stood in the backyard of his father's house in the German state of Bavaria, preparing to behead a stray dog with a sword. He'd recently graduated from "decapitating" inanimate pumpkins to practicing on live animals. If he passed this final stage, Schmidt would be considered ready to start his job, as an executioner of people.

We know the details of this morbid scene because Schmidt meticulously chronicled his life as an executioner, writing a series of diaries that painted a rich picture of this profession during the sixteenth century. His words provided a rare glimpse of the humanity behind the violence, revealing a man who took his work seriously and often felt empathy for his victims. But what's more, Schmidt wasn't necessarily all that unusual; historical anecdotes reveal that the prevailing stereotype of the hooded, blood-spattered, brutish executioner falls far short of the truth.

So then, what was it like to do this work hundreds of years ago in Europe? And how did "executioner" become a legitimate job title in the first place?

Don't step on the grass, Sam.

After six years in the natural medicine business, Green Angel CBD owner John Dee has faced an obstacle so large that he could be forced to close his doors: the New York Police Department's 75th Precinct.

Over the weekend, Dee sent a 106-pound shipment of hemp flower from a Vermont farm via FedEx Freight. FedEx thought the $30,000 shipment might be pot, so it informed the Williston Police Department in Vermont. After investigating, the cops produced a police report showing that the company was a licensed hemp grower and that the hemp's THC content was 0.06 percent, well within the legal limit.

Literally and figuratively, a Feel Good Story.

More than a year after undergoing a 14-hour operation to transplant a penis, scrotum, and lower abdominal wall, a severely injured veteran reports that he has regained normal sensation and function of his new body parts.

The young man now has “near-normal” erections, the ability to achieve orgasms, and normal sensation in the shaft and tip of his transplanted penis, according to his medical team at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He urinates while standing up with a “strong stream” and no issues with urgency or straining. (The transplant did not include donor testicles, to avoid the possibility of fathering non-genetically related children.)
The doctors reported the update on their patient November 7 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

There still is a lot of NFL football left. However, one sportsbook company is making refunds to a certain bettor.

Were it not for a missed field goal during the first round of the playoffs last season, the Bears and quarterback Mitch Trubisky — who went 12-4 during the regular season — would have been competing for a berth in the NFC Championship game.

But, Cody Parkey’s field goat failed to make it through the uprights and the Bears fell to the Eagles by a point.

Despite the way the season ended, there was plenty of optimism for the Bears this season and for Trubisky, who finished last season with 24 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and more than 3,000 passing yards, to continue to improve. There was so much optimism for Trubisky that some sportsbooks even took bets on him winning this year’s MVP award.

Unfortunately for Chicago, the Bears are now 3-5 on the season and Trubisky has looked like anything but an MVP. He’s been so bad in fact that one oddsmaker, PointsBet Sportsbook, has decided to refund MVP bets that were placed on the 25-year-old.

Which reminds me of my favorite polka.

Just maybe you aren't so weird and different after all.

We understand common fears like being afraid spiders or clowns, or a rational fear of heights, it’s something we deal with. Believe it or not, there are some people out there with who have to live with more strange phobias like the fear of chopsticks or the number 13. Here are 5 of the most obscure phobias recognised by science.

#5 is not a phobia, it just means you're a dumb sh!t.

Needle. Eyes. Not a good combo. Genius Award Winner.

Come on guys, you have to know when enough is enough. I mean, do you really think that putting a needle and ink INSIDE your eyeball is a good idea? Because if you do, I think you might want to re-evaluate your choices. I get it might seem like a good idea at the time, but come on.

Turns out an Australia woman thought it was indeed a great idea to get the over the top tattoo…which caused her to lose her eyesight. The woman, who apparently has already spent nearly $26,000 on tattoos, says she went blind after undergoing an eyeball procedure to tattoo the whites of her eyes.

A really good Christian movie BLOOD RAIN it's a Korean movie where people are being killed one by one I can't really give it away but it's a mystery but it has a very heavy Christian theme

Also

When I was married with family, it was a weekly stop. I love shopping there. The gas is usually about 15 to 20 cents cheaper there than anywhere else, and I drive so much in a year, the card pays for itself just for that.

The things that don't go bad, like cleaning stuff, laundry and dishwasher detergent, plastic and foil wrap/bags, stuff like that, the savings are huge.

But I don't have a family to eat the 5 heads of romaine, the 5 pounds of sweet peppers, or other fresh stuff, in the size/quantity they offer. Some go shopping and split up the stuff for multiple families. But the fresh stuff I buy goes bad when I am maybe half done using it.

But yeah, the steaks are great. Those NY strips are a great deal. I cook one (or two if there is company) and freeze the rest.

And I have gotten my money's worth already by using all 3!

BTW, if anyone who has had errors trying to post something that was cut and paste, use this site to convert to a format that Pixy can use.

you have to paste the converted text into AoS and then cut the nonsense characters (usually the ampersand, a semicolon, and some 8221 numbers, all parts of code that Pixy doesn't recognize).

But it works well, if clumsy.

do the SNF (skilled nursing facility) smell test.

when you walk in, if it smells like unwashed bodies, human waste, or disinfectant/cleaners... leave.

the first two tell you they aren't taking care of people, and the last one is usually a sign they are trying to cover up the smell of the others.

and yeah, i've been in health care for over 29 years. both of the SNF's my dad was in passed the test.

I blew my chance to explore fun and ultimate agony with a very hawt ginger AB nurse who was seated next to me on an Air Canada flight to Toronto.

Yes, seated next to me by the chief purser, up in biz class, where a bunch of us had been moved cuz one of us was an Air Canada pilot, though in our group for other reasons. Purser was great. Moved us up, then, for the young single guys, selected an attractive younger woman from coach and brought her up, one for each of us. Free booze. The ginger was very pretty and Canadian-nice, we exchanged a few letters, and gawd knows what I was up to or off to back then, and this was waaay before email etc, so ..... thing never got going.

In Southern California.

You don't think Joni Mitchell's music was a touchstone along the way to the adulthood that lay just beyond, then you weren't THERE.

So much of the music then, pulled you in to living the life in the lyrics, the siren in the song.

If you don't think that my life of motorcycling horizons, embracing the live aboard life on the New Dawn, and before then, climbing the Fortune 1000 ladder up to the boardroom and driving flags of claim in this professional field, or the next?

For me, it was literature, but then it was MUSIC, that drove the soul to aspire.

And aspire I did. Conquered much of what I faced, lost a few challenges, and was squashed like a bug at the last.

The victories though, can never be taken, stolen nor scrubbed from my thoughts.

Good news?

Unfortunately, I don't travel to Russia anymore, now that my wife has moved here - I was spending about a month a year in the Motherland prior to that. I still do watch Russian TV occasionally.

Shtrabat ("Punishment Battalion") is indeed excellent.

Brigada ("The Brigade") is also very good - it shows a group of friends forming a criminal gang as the Soviet Union collapses, and growing steadily more powerful for the next decade.

Also good is Zhizn i Sudba ("Life and Fate"), a TV treatment of Vassilly Grossman's novel about the Battle of Stalingrad, along with much else.

I believe all of these are available on YouTube with English subtitles.

No. 2 Son had some early pooping issues. I had recently separated from his mother, my wife, and was doing everything I could to keep up the we're all in this together thing. She found a poop therapist in Cambridge.

Cambridge was a long drive from the South Shore, but wife was a power babe and she was plugged in to the best of everything. Of course I'd do the driving and pay half of the poop therapy.

Poop therapist recommended rewards for good pooping.

At the end of the day every poop from that kid cost me $50.

483 AOP, didn't spend *that* much time in stores other than bakeries/food stores, but never noticed a glut of anything in particular. But obviously that occurred, rampantly, across the system, and I think many stories were written that included such things.

There were American oranges for sale one day. Amazing. Sunkist boxes. Jumped in line right away, felt no guilt about taking away some from locals.

But I could pull the lever or kick a chair out from under them and hang someone, especially for what is now considered a capitol crime.

Of course I'm not sure what they would hang you for back in medieval times. I'd probably feel bad for hanging someone because they mocked the king or something like that.

reagan told a joke on this: a worker was determined to buy a car. but there wasn't a financing system in the soviet union so you had to pay cash. so the worker saved and saved until he had 1,000 rubles and went to the lada dealership, picked out a model, and plunked down his thousand rubles. "congratulations, comrade, you've just bought the finest car in the world, the pride of soviet industry. now, come back two years from now, tuesday, to pick up the car." and the buyer said "oh no, i can't come tuesday ten years from now." "but, tovariush' the salesman asked "how can you possibly know you're unavailable ten years from now?' and the man said 'that's when the plumber is coming to fix the pipes."

501 One would think that central planning, soviet-style,
would normally lead to scarcity in most popular products. Did it ever
work out the other way, where there was an absolute glut of some things
in stores?
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 10, 2019 12:33 AM (/sgva)

Some parts got overproduced and others underproduced, but I am not sure about gluts in stores. Since nothing had any actual value other than as a trade item, it generally got bought up as investments.

What I am told is that since production was planned at units in the whole, and larger sized units were easier to make, the larger sized things got produced in excess. Large clothing was the example I got, children sizes and petite sized clothing was harder to come by. Also smaller nails, since it was easier to make larger nails. I expect roofing nails were hard to come by.

Austrian economists love looking at the Soviet economy as their Gosplan had to make all production and price assignments, and it was done through negotiation from directives from the Duma, against what the factory managers thought they actually could produce. There was absolutely no feedback on prices to bring production into alignment with actual need. I am told that they used foreign shoppers to price things in Market Economy countries to have some idea about what prices to assign, but the basic problem with Marxist labor value theory is that it forgets to take actual demand into consideration, so production was never brought into coordination with need and demand, only set to will and production schedules.

(as I preach about things I vaguely understand)

Does God listen to the prayers of the inebriated? I'm inclined to think "Why not?"

But really, this is just an excuse to post this link to Over The Rhine's "Drunkard's Prayer": https://youtu.be/f3ZucFa_Ra4

God: "Enough of this, I need some laughs!"

Apropos of nothing,Read Riddles in the Dark from The Hobbit to my boys tonight. Their enthusiasm for the whole affair warmed my heart. Younger said it was his favorite chapter yet, it got real dusty all of a sudden.

570 I got a new modem on Saturday that is Wifi capable.

I'm sitting here watching my new laptop perform a Windows 10 update. It's 23% done and has been chugging away for about an hour. Windows told me it was going to do an update and my only choice was now or later.

I'm typing this on my old Mac Pro desktop, which I converted to Linux Mint back in May. Linux does frequent updates, but each one is only a tiny part of the OS and only takes a couple of minutes. The user has complete control over when or even whether to perform the update.

571 Ground control to Major Tom. I just nailed your wife, for the 17th time this week, and we'll be back for more tonight. Have you consider replacing the paneling in your den? It's quite dated.

572 Windows says my PC will restart several times. It just did so for the second time and is now 48% done.

573 Hiya rickl !

Posted by: JT at November 10, 2019 04:48 AM (arJlL)

574 When I was originally given the laptop, I intended to install Linux Mint on it as well, but after using it for a week in the rehab, I started getting used to Windows 10 and am leaving it as is for now. I never used Windows 10 before, so I may as well learn something about it.

Posted by: rickl at November 10, 2019 04:49 AM (7vvoJ)

575 Hi, JT!

57% done.

Posted by: rickl at November 10, 2019 04:50 AM (7vvoJ)

576 75% done and restarting again.

577 I took 15 mg of morphine sulfate about 11:30 pm. I was reading the Wikipedia entry about morphine earlier. It's one of the best pain relievers known and can cause a feeling of well-being or even euphoria. Long term use has little effect on cognitive, memory, or physical functions. Literally the only negative side effect is that it is highly addictive.

Morphine is a most excellent drug.

581 577 Led Zeppelin II and morphine sulfate --

Well, one out of two ain't too bad.

When I broke the fuck out of my leg, they offered me morphine in the ambulance, but honestly, I wasn't in pain yet. Even at the emergency room, I didn't hurt at first. But I KNEW it was a'coming.

Oh, Nurse...

Posted by: GnuBreed at November 10, 2019 05:20 AM (Z4rgH)

582 94% done. Almost...

When I was in the hospital, they assessed my pain level and prescribed 45 mg twice a day. That carried over into rehab.

But they kept trying to give it to me in the morning. I said I would rather wait until after my physical therapy to take it. They kept telling me that the prescriber's orders said morning and evening. I said, "That was fine when I was in the hospital and just sitting around reading or watching TV. But now that I'm getting physical therapy to improve my balance and coordination, I think it would be better to concentrate on that first and take the morphine afterwards." They eventually caught on but it took a lot of explaining on my part.

rickl, I've followed with interest your predicament, and whatever level of pain control YOU choose is the right one. No one knows you better than you.

Best wishes, natch. You're one of the good ones.

586 Windows update is finished. I just shut down the desktop and transitioned to the laptop. That's fine, except I can't see the keyboard without a brighter ight.

Posted by: rickl at November 10, 2019 05:46 AM (7vvoJ)

587 That's a relief, rickl.

Did you see my comment yesterday? I wondered if some form of PTSD was responsible for that episode the other night. Dog knows you've been through the wringer lately.

604 > Did it ever work out the other way, where there was an absolute glut of some things in stores?

As I understand it, factory quotas were assigned by bureaucrats, so it all depended on whatever (bullshit) metric the bureaucrats chose.
The example I remember is paper. The bureaucracy first set the quota in terms of weight. Result: the factories turned out nothing but heavy brown wrapping paper. Then they tried setting the quota in terms of square meters. Result: the factories turned out nothing but tissue paper.

So in those cases, there might be a glut of one or the other, yes, or more likely a barely adequate amount of whatever kind of paper made it easiest to fulfill the quota, but a shortage of every other kind of paper.

The idea of trying to produce as much of each type of paper as people actually wanted to buy was never even on the table, of course.

605 Safe travels for creeper and NaCly today.

rickl, you "sound" much better today.
Glad to see it.

Btw - I've read it's dangerous to take morphine pills over one week old.
Can get address to you that you may ship them to for proper disposal.

Posted by: teej at November 10, 2019 06:07 AM (9WcJw)

606 I've never heard that, teej. These are already over a week old. They gave me the remaining three days' worth I had when I left the rehab and a prescription for seven days' more. I've been out for over a week now and have only taken four pills total.

Posted by: rickl at November 10, 2019 06:12 AM (7vvoJ)

607 Very late, but on the whole poo obsession thing....Glenn Beck had a Rabbi on this week and they were discussing this very thing. Rabbi said that the Poo flinging, Gaia Worship and body piercing/tattoo fetish things were all indicative of Primitivism. That the further we drift from God the more we regress to our base nature.

Not Jewish or much of a Beck Fan boy, but it made some sense to me.
