Oh I think that's easy to explain. It's Cruz/Beto all over again - Cruz lost a lot of votes just because middle aged women thought he was mean. That was a big surprise I never expected, that so many people would vote for strong right wing Conservative Abbott for Governor, and vote for Beto on the same ticket.
Seeing Beto's career end gives me almost as much joy as watching Hillary's career end. Not quite as much, but it will make me smile for some time.

We have Early Voting in Louisiana that began last Saturday and ends this Saturday, a week before our general election on the 16th. The primary early voting is an extra week. I'm not sure if other states do this but technically that makes 9 days of in-person voting. Huge turnout numbers so far, every visit counts.

So that is the key right now. Western KY will report late, how much of that 1/3rd left of Louisville is Dem strongholds.
Despite what is being said "about" the results, the actual result of the election depends on what is still outstanding. It is 50/50 right now. Which precincts are still on the map.
If this was FL, NC, PA, or VA I could probably hazard a guess, but I know nothing about KY other than running from Louisville to Lexington two weeks ago.

Often in a state dominated by the other party, the only way to change direction is to elect a governor from the other party. See Mass for example with Charlie Baker despite being Dem in every other office practically. California was another. Unfortunately, as Jinx pointed out earlier, the GOP majorities in the state house as of today are so narrow that it will only take one seat to flip the state senate and two to flip to the state house, which would mean two years of a Dem legislature along with a Dem governor.

From looking at the map, a lot of Appalachian counties voted for Beshears who is the son of a popular ex governor possibly because of coal industry troubles with a major coal company going bankrupt and not paying workers.
All in all, a reminder that state politics are decoupled somewhat from national at the gubernatorial race level. Key is looking at down ballot races where the Republicans have about 55 percent in statewide races as these are usually more party voting offices. The SOS race was interesting but it appears that the Repubs are probably going to win that office with it being ahead with most Demo leaning votes counted. Western KY is more Republican.

Ah. I hate to say it, as KY is my birth state and I have family there... But it's one of the most welfare dependent rural places in the country. Medicaid reform is never going to be a winning issue there, and one that Dems can exploit. Not that it shouldn't be a goal, but any handout clawback in KY will damage a candidate.

As I said above, he did the right thing with the teachers and their union trying to fix the pension crisis that Beshear's father created during his governorship.. tough position that he felt he had to do but he blasted them on the airwaves calling them stupid and such and they and their relatives and families didn't forget,
They didn't vote for Beshear but they didn't vote for Bevin either...

The most interesting thing was how just enough precincts were kept out in Jefferson and Warren counties until it appeared there wouldn't be monkey business required. That's the only thing that gives me pause about Trump winning 2020, the potential for fraud.

Yep, during a special session of the legislature last year called specifically because the state was facing a "fiscal cliff" that required a tax increase. He also mailed letters to all the seniors in assisted living centers saying they would have to close.
Guess what? The state miraculously has a surplus this year. LA's state budget is $1+ billion. The 2005 budget was about $18 billion.

You could in theory create a registration system that allows sockpuppets. You would need to make it yourself though and not just grab some online system. Just when you write your comment you have another box for your "display name," sort of like now, just need it separate from your login.

KY guy here. 1. Bevin won 4 years ago cause his opponent ran on the wonders of ObamaCare. Bevin was weak then, and was quite the surprise when he won. 2. Bevin has done so good things, but no one likes the smell of infected corrupted abscesses when they are lanced. It's been quite contentious for 4 years. 3. Bevin himself doesn't exactly have a winning personality that jumps through the TV. That's a real problem, and quite frankly, the main campaign tool of the Dems was that he was easy to hate. 4. It doesn't help that he pissed of most of the teachers in the state. Throw in a spoiler Libertarian candidate for those that despise Bevin and Beshear equally (that I think based on county breakdowns would have likely split enough for Bevin from those that would have voted without the L on the ballot), you have this result.
Now to be fair, there's still some outstanding votes to be tallied (enough to push Bevin over if luck suddenly breaks his way), but this isn't a huge win for the dems with the GOP taking every single other partisan race on the ballot today (both statewide and special election general assembly seats). Cameron will do to Beshear what he did to Bevin (and considering the corruption in Beshears family tree, his dad was the previous gov before Bevin) it's probably not going to be pretty. Adams will likely make some improvements to the SOS office, though he's GOPe in the McConnell camp. The GOP retains majorities in both chambers of the state house. Beshear isn't getting anything done.

George W. was just as much of a dogshit candidate as Romney and McCain yet he still won twice. The country has changed since then. It's no longer a center-right country, it's a center-left country.
If it weren't for the electoral college Republicans would have lost six of the last seven Presidential elections. Every Republican Presidential candidate faces an uphill battle for two reasons:
1. Immigration. You can't import a million new Democrats every year and expect to keep being competitive in elections.
2. Slippery Slope social issues. The Establishment waved the white flag on too many issues like gay marriage. This allowed leftism to adopt a facade of normalcy in the minds of the voters. Once you can be convinced that Adam and Steve can marry, it's a lot easier to convince you of the benefits of drag queen story hour, and from there suddenly Joe Biden doesn't seem so radical after all.

They killed off Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Mary Poppinsed Leia, essentially squandering the last chance at reuniting the original cast and giving them a proper sendoff while simultaneously not creating a compelling and rich story or introducing interesting new characters to carry the franchise forward to a new generation.
How can you not have all of the characters in at least one scene together?
It boggles the mind that you could buy a franchise and IP for 4.5 billion and have no coherent story arc in place before you start making films?
They literally have just winged it.

I have no faith in libertarians anymore. In my experience, for most "libertarians" the label is simply shorthand for "I like weed." The modern libertarian is more likely to vote Dem than Republican anyway. If there wasn't a libertarian candidate on the ballot I'd be willing to bet Bevin's loss would be even bigger.

The AP has reversed its call for Beshear. No need for false hope but this may be one where a recount does change the result. More than a lame talking point for the Democrats, it would be nice if the teachers union somehow came up short.
