16 That title either needs some splainin' or it reinforces one of my favorite movies, Mediterraneo.

Our hero is a deserter from the Italian army in WWII. He runs all around the Med saying una faccia una razza, one face one race. We all look alike all around the Med because basically people have had sailboats for a long time and sailor things happen.

Of course, everywhere in his journeys he says that, people agree with him, and then fuck him over.

I tend to just call them Mediterranean. Before the Arabs swept across North Africa, the Mediterranean people were crawling all over each other like a box of Hamsters. 10,000 years of trading, raiding, intermarrying, warring, slaving, raping and whatever else filled their time before the internet meant you have some language and cultural differences but a lot of shared blood.

62 There's a Doctor Who episode on PlutoTV right now. The Doctor (Tom Baker) is accused of killing the Time Lord President, and he stops his trial by declaring himself a candidate for the office, which gives him protected status.

Apparently this is where the Democrats got the idea that you can't investigate a Presidential candidate for criminal activity.

87 The scene of this painting doesn't do much for me. It's not bad but it's not that interesting. However, the colors are restful and I like the way they blend and contrast. The clothing seems to be more important than the woman who is almost generic.

I should look at this longer. I have a feeling I'm missing some elements.

91 Some furher context on PA: Trump won the commonwealth by about 45k votes (0.72%) - total vote share: 48.18%. Here's Trump's vote share in various "Republican Strongholds" (according to yesterday's media) in 2016 (difference from Felonious' totals in that county)...

Bucks: 47.74% (-0.78%)
Chester: 43.20% (-9.51%)
Delaware: 37.18% (22.42%)

So Bucks is closest to a bellwether from that measure, but got the eventual winner wrong. The closest actual bellwether is Erie County.

Wisconsin did not make all margarine illegal. They just made the sale of
YELLOW colored margarine unlawful. Most of you won't remember, but
margarine used to come in plastic bags and it was white. Included in the
bag was a little capsule of yellow food coloring which you squoze until
it popped open. Then you kneeded the bag of margarine to distribute
color. That kneeding was impossible for a four year old girl but she had
to try.

I grew up in Iowa and those bags of margarine made their way across the river from Wisconsin. Most of the country probably never even saw them.

No it's not. It's presuming that you know better than other parents what they should do with their spawn.

Now this girl is sort of like Monday's girl. Not exactly impressionistic, but done with little painterliness.

I love how you can do that with oils. If you look at the brush strokes it's just slap dash here's some blue, but the eye turns it into peasant dress and a real girl.

YELLOW colored margarine unlawful. Most of you won't remember, but

margarine used to come in plastic bags and it was white. Included in the

bag was a little capsule of yellow food coloring which you squoze until

it popped open. Then you kneeded the bag of margarine to distribute

color. That kneeding was impossible for a four year old girl but she had

to try.

Posted by: Nick in Tallahassee at November 07, 2019 09:53 AM (wGbBR)

I don't think polls, not even "reliable" ones, could tell us much about Louisiana, other than it's going to be close. In the first election, the two Republican candidates together got 51% (iirc) and Democrat Edwards got 48% or so. If all Republican voters come back and vote Republican, they've got it, BUT the Republican who won did a lot to aggravate his losing opponents supporters, and if they're still pissed off and stay home on runoff day then the Democrat wins re-election easily.

so like I said, it all comes down to turnout, and that's almost impossible to poll.

207 grammie, rolling over an IRA can be simple or complicated, depending on what kind of IRA you're rolling it from (regular, Roth) and what kind of IRA you're rolling it to (same examples). I rolled over a few when my hubby died. I don't recall it being difficult but the banks and Prudential did most of the paperwork for me. I would think if someone wanted your money they'd be willing to help you.

Just remember, if you're rolling it from a regular IRA to a Roth you'll have to pay income taxes upfront on the entire amount but it will then be shielded from taxes forever.

I have. Filling out some paperwork is all. The receiving IRA institution will have to fill out & return part of it to you, to include a signature from a representative of the receiving institution.

Iy's not too burdensome. It can take two weeks or so to process after you send in the paperwork to your existing IRA.

I fe done many rollovers of qualified accounts.

The biggest problem I've had is that the original institution often characterizes the rollover as a distribution, and that results in a letter of inquiry (which looks very threatening) from the IRS.

I always write a letter of instruction, specifying its a rollover, and instructing the original institution to classify it as such and to withhold NO taxes.

I was forced to roll over a tiny IRA (like $400) from TIAA-CREF and just moved it to an IRA CD at my credit union (this is not investment advice - do not do that, the returns are awful, it is just a tiny headache I don't care about). As long as it goes from tax-deferred instrument to another tax-deferred instrument, it shouldn't matter from a tax standpoint as long as the money makes no intermediate stops in a non-tax-deferred instrument.

What I don't get about her "wealth tax" (read: outright asset expropriation) scheme is how she expects it to work. The people with assets at that scale don't have vaults full of gold and jewels like Scrooge McDuck. They have stocks, bonds, etc. To turn those into money, they have to be liquidated and you have to be careful at that scale not to crash the asset.

This gets even worse when the voracious government sets its sites lower and goes after the regular rich and then the middle class. They can't liquidate it without driving the prices somewhere into the fifth sub-basement. They could expropriate a billion dollars worth of wealth and, through the magic of government efficiency, turn it into half of that much money.

Warren is more than smart enough to know this. The big reason I hate Warren is because she *is* smart enough, she does know enough, she does understand these things. During the Financial Crisis, she did very well in analysis - probably better than any other elected official. She's a sharp woman.

Then she made the CFPB and floats this kind of nonsense. Unlike many critters, she can't claim she's stupid. That leaves only one choice. She's evil.

Selling margarine in dairy country was a very bad thing once upon a time. In order to make the buying of margarine unappealing, it could only be sold in its natural color, and the yellow coloring was sold separately in a little packet.

Margarine was a good deal cheaper than butter so this seemed like a good way to slow down the sale of margarine. My mother remembers her mother buying margarine and having to knead it before using it, because nobody wanted to eat it when it was that industrial white color straight out of the package. I guess it looked like caulk or something.

Thanks. I see a lot of complaints about GopE and thought that some background might help. Some folks know party histories but a lot do not and the past does help predict current behavior.

If VA Republicans do not want to live in California East, the power is in their hands and that means changing the party from the bottom first. I grew up in the party system and have worked in campaigns at the local, state, and on one national campaign in a small way.

You want political change or even the status quo, you have to work for it, politics cannot be done alone and by oneself.

The problem is that Lizzie never made the transition from moon-baying leftist whose ideas don't have to make sense in the real world to someone who has to (sort of) function in that real world. I'm not sure she can.

The only reason we're hearing about her lunacy now is that other Dems are trying to take her down so that they'll get the nom. It certainly isn't because the media took it on.

312 I'm merely pointing out $5000 a year for ten years is likely going to yield $80K, and that's not a bad plan, either.

That's not a plan, that's a wish. You posited an 8% return. How to achieve an 8% return is a plan. You posited a wish.

Also you said that parents shouldn't spend $5K a year on traveling teams for their kids. That's where this started.

Also, the reason it took a minute here is that I went away to do the math. Your $5K a year at 8% yields $72,433 at the end of ten years.

So your math is wrong. Your idea is without foundation. You should not be telling art threadists how to spend money on their own spawn.

I agree, and I don't think she'll be paid off - a corp like CBS can keep any lawsuit in procedural limbo for 5, 6 years easy, (see Mark Steyn's lawsuit woes) and there's no way an ordinary person can pursue that kind of thing. 357 The Jordanian government announced that as of Sunday, Israeli farmers will be banned from entering the Naharayim enclave, Jordan Valley Council head Idan Greenbaum said Thursday.

Under the 1994 peace agreement with Jordan, the Naharayim enclave and the Tzofar enclave were leased to Israel for 25 years, allowing the Israeli farmers living in the enclave to continue managing their farms.

About a year ago, the Hashemite Kingdom announced that it wanted to terminate the lease agreement and take over the two enclaves.

Those areas will die and become non-useful land.

359 Also you said that parents shouldn't spend $5K a year on traveling teams for their kids. That's where this started.

+1, except for the part where I didn't. I'm not sure what you read, but that wasn't me posting it.

Also, the reason it took a minute here is that I went away to do the math. Your $5K a year at 8% yields $72,433 at the end of ten years.

So your math is wrong. Your idea is without foundation. You should not be telling art threadists how to spend money on their own spawn.

Ah, the "Deeply Principled" Libertarian Party: working to bring fascism to the USA since (at least) 2016. They're basically the final stage of NeverTrumpism for those who can't go all the way and commit to their truthful actual home in the Democrat Party.

Grammie, discuss issues with Financial adviser and then if it is to be put into new account, it has to be issued directly into new account. It can't go to you first then placed in new investment account, or you will be privileged to pay all the taxes on it, plus penalties. Your broker can handle this for you , and all this stuff is done online today, no checks, etc.

437 The man arrested near the U.S.-Mexico border was not linked to the suspected cartel massacre of three women and six children, Mexican officials said Wednesday as authorities appear to be struggling to narrow down which cartel was responsible for the heinous attack.

But Mexican Officials are sure it is also linked to the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. ( Ok I made that one up)

460 "Wisconsin did not make all margarine illegal. They just made the sale of
YELLOW colored margarine unlawful. Most of you won't remember, but
margarine used to come in plastic bags and it was white. Included in the
bag was a little capsule of yellow food coloring which you squoze until it popped open. Then you kneeded the bag of margarine to distribute
color."
Back in the 1950s, when I was a shaver growing up in Chicago, my Wisconsin uncle would visit us from time to time, and he always stocked up on colored margarine. I guess he liked the stuff; though why anyone would prefer it to butter is beyond me.
By the way, I love Corot's paintings. He was dissed for painting the deplorables of his day - peasants and other such riff-raff - and for painting them more or less as they were, rather than making them picturesque.

Sorry, not buying. VA is a vassal of NOVA, which is owned by The Swamp. Nothing but a blue trend to be expected there until and unless The Swamp gets drained. PA: PDJT lost all of the counties that "flipped" and he still won the state. KY: The GOP swept every statewide race aside from the toxically unpopular Governor.

My mom's b-day was Sept. 22. Nobody, including her brother and sister, could remember the exact day, because the autumn equinox can vary from one year to the next. I had the same problem. After I read Lord of the Rings and found Frodo and Bilbo also had that birthday, I had a mnemonic I could use.

Nah, just yell at 'em real quick. My mom didn't mention me forgetting her birthday one year until a couple of weeks later when she sort of blew up at me. I don't much care about birthdays, and didn't know that she really did.

I make it a point to remember now, but she coulda just told me that it was important to her.

532 508, DocJ, you are correct and part of the issue in VA was the fed court mandated redistricting. VA Republicans at the last account actually had 60,000 more votes than Dems statewide but the Dems have rotten boroughs with low levels of voting. Republicans or leaners often simply sit out these elections because there is no Rep. candidate.

PA had a similar redistricting and KY was a governor that was trying tough love regarding pensions and Medicaid which the fiscons promote. He lost, in part, because people value losses higher than potential gains. Pissing off the teachers which are everywhere in the state is dangerous politically but was the right thing to do for the state's fiscal health. Ditto with charges and work requirements on Medicaid but also a downer in E. Kentucky which is getting hit hard by the decline in coal.

535 Good oped in the WSJ. It would be foolish for the
GOP to ignore these trends. If we start losing enough state
legislatures, governorships and House seats, everything else follows
down the drain. Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania are warnings. I see
a lot of people writing off the trends with suburban voters, that were
natural Republican supporters. That's whistling past the graveyard and
a huge mistake. Even more problematic is it has gotten worse than Nader
this RNC leadership or lack thereof.

539 >>Hadn't heard of. Cursory review shows that head guy offed himself, so there's a there there.

>>What's the Biden or Clinton connection?

From roughly 2007 through 2015 over $220 billion, with a "b" was laundered through one small branch of Danske Bank in Estonia. The money came mostly from Russia but also other former Soviet bloc countries and ended up in places like Cyprus and then on to some of the world's largest banks.

It is the biggest money laundering scandal ever by orders of magnitude. It was uncovered in 2014 and has been under investigation ever since.

Rudy Giuliani has said he has proof of payments from Burisma to Hunter Biden totaling over $3 million that went from Ukraine to Latvia to Cyprus to Biden.

Incidentally, Danske is a Danish bank and this scandal has rocked the Danish economy. Denmark owns Greenland.

Four shalt thou not pat, neither pat thou two, excepting that thou

rhomboid, the PA elections were county and municipal level.
the Philly collar counties stayed in GOP control through many cycles due to demunist voter apathy in off-year elections, especially during the Obama years. They figured they had the White House and all the federal agencies, who cares about a stupid county council election?
The Hillary defeat woke them up. They came out in strength in 2018 and this year as well. It's definitely an anti-Trump effect. Also, the local GOP did not mount a very good GOTV effort, since they had enjoyed control for so many years. I don't know why they didn't see the writing on the wall, considering what happened in 2018 and that the demunists enjoy a 30,000 registered voter advantage.
