Lictors Returning To Brutus The Bodies Of His Sons
Jacques-Louis David Jacques-Louis David is one of my personal top three artists of all time. He is most known for nurturing NeoClassicism into a major power in the art world, and using it to propagandize for both Robespierre and Napoleon. And because he was really good at it, he would die in exile after Napoleon’s fall. “Oath of the Horatii” and “The Death of Marat” are considered two of David’s greatest pieces, but I like this one the most. The full title is: “J Brutus, First Consul, returned to his house after having condemned his two sons who had allied themselves with the Tarquins and conspired against Roman liberty the lictors return their bodies so that they may be given burial.” The painting is an example of NeoClassicism, a theatrical style, designed to be very easy to read and understand. The settings are simple, the lighting is direct, the colors are bright, everything looks carefully blocked, and the action is very melodramatic. As the style’s name suggests, its imagery and themes derive from Classical art and its ideals. It is classicism for a New Age. Greece and Rome (especially Rome) was the Golden Age of Western civilization. To copy them was to elevate the present culture to heights it hadn’t seen in centuries. David divides the painting in two. On the right we see a mother and her two daughters, a female servant sits to the far edge. The females are lit by a very bright spotlight coming through the ceiling. On the table sits a basket of sewing materials. The women were engaged in some domestic activity when horror strikes. One girl faints while the other shields her eyes. The mother screams and reaches for her lost sons. The servant just collapses in her chair and covers her face. They all react realistically and variously to the bodies of their executed sons and brothers being brought back to the house. The women’s clothes are bright a white, gold and red that gleam in the light making them even more noticeable. David is obsessed with accuracy and detail. He gives us a realistic Roman house with a colonnade surrounding the atrium. However, this background would have been too distracting, so he hangs a sheet up to act as a backdrop for the action. It is a light gray to provide contrast to the women in front. The gray is also a nice neutral tone that allows the warm tones of the flesh and dresses to really shine. On the left is darkness. A dimmer light shines through the door onto the stretchers that carry the corpses. We don’t see them completely, however. Just enough to get the idea. Below the legs of the one son sits Lucius Junius Brutus in total darkness. A blue shroud frames his head and his facial expression is hidden in shadow. His body language speaks for him. His left hand grasps the execution decree. His legs are crossed at the ankles and his toes are tightly clenched. An instant before, his head was resting on his right arm. When the women screamed, his head suddenly jerked up but his body remained frozen. We are able to see his raw honest emotions and his inner conflict that made him choose between his family and his country. His family lost. Brutus sits at the feet of a statue of Roma Victoria. You can see an image of the She-wolf and the Twins next to his knees. She looms over Brutus and blocks any light from reaching him. She dominates him and it seems that he was appealing to the goddess for assurance that he did the right thing. Brutus looks out at us. His brow is creased, his mouth is tight, and his stare is arresting. Brutus became a hero in Rome; he sacrificed his own children to the cause of liberty. “Brutus” is a masterclass of art. I wish I had more time. The painting is huge, over 10 feet by 13 feet, and the message is just as large. When this work was unveiled, the Tennis Court Oath and the storming of the Bastille were already history. The Revolution was underway. In “Brutus”, David provides an example of true sacrifice for liberty and challenges his contemporaries. The great men of the past weren’t afraid to do their duty, no matter the cost. Is France willing to do the same?
A lot of sites like to lighten up this painting so you can see Brutus better. The original is actually dark.

This is one of those paintings you can "hear". The screams are just deafening.
The she-wolf is admittedly tough to see. You can really only make out the legs of the children. It's an exact replica of the Capitoline Wolf (https://tinyurl.com/y345kfv7). That is what identifies the statue as Roma.

24 hr test of immersion in acetone was disappointing. the coating is definitely softened, but not dissolved.
I'ff not tried Goof Off or other such strippers.
The soak does result in less scrubbing needed, though.

I never studies art or art history so when you post I take a few minutes to pound some new ideas into this tired old brain.
Side Story:
Daughter is a UT taking art history as a history major so it was not a goof off class. So she prints mini pics (4x6) of about 250 works of art and glues to back of 4x6 cards. Other sides has all the facts, artist, etc to study. So a buddy likes them and wants a set which my daughter makes a second set. They make the only 2 As.

Then I see the dark area with the true pain of the moment playing out in the figure of Brutus. He is alone in the dark of his home and pain. The women can support and comfort each other. There is nothing like that for him. It is far more poignant than the lighted area.
As a Virginian, I am not in the mood today to put 'the state' over the individual after yesterday's elections. But I can see the power of David's image, especially after the chaos and blood from the mobs of the French Revolution.
I wish I could add some wise commentary to Kris' analysis of the art. Alas, she was too thorough and correct.

Art History and History are great classes to take the same semester, especially if they cove the same eras. The information of one reinforces the other. You also get visuals of the historical events, and/or an idea of how those events effected culture. They make each other more relateble.

One of my college history professors, Bud Robertson just died.
He was one of the foremost authorities on the Civil War and had written a fantastic biography of Stonewall Jackson. His year long Civil War class at Virginia Tech was great.

The "neoclassicism" of it was intended to link the left's "democracy" and "republic" to the ancient versions. Of course, as we all know they aren't at all alike in practice. Yeah, overthrowing a monarchy is that in theory but propagandizing your Terror and territorial expansion as being the same as the first forages into self-rule in ancient greece and republican Rome is false.

Good for your daughter actually studying while in school. I hope she isn't being poisoned by her professors.
Flash cards work, at least for me. I made flash cards constantly when I was in college. Just making them helps, since you write it out and have to process the data. Studying them helps more.
I also did this with note-taking: on paper in class, then type them up on my PC in the evenings. Time-consuming and tedious but it forced me to learn the material.

David is a very polarizing artist. I love his work but despise the man.
There's a great scene in the movie "Amadeus" where Mozart has to defend "Figaro" to the Emperor and his Yesmen. This would have been about the same time as David's mature phase, but David would have been on the side of the Yesmen. David's work looks unnatural because he isn't trying to paint real life, he is trying to improve it by depicting great men overcoming difficult situations for the betterment of society.
There's a reason Neoclassicism became the go-to style for Socialist Realism.

Yep - I did that in law school. First notes from the casebook, then in class notes, then type it all up. I was also about three weeks ahead with the reading so that I was studying for finals a couple of weeks before classes ended.

Man vs. Rule of Law
Both of these ideas are in this painting.
The State, Rome as a Republic is a new idea and has thrown out the kings. Self, or Brutus and his family just made a great sacrifice.
The Rule of Law should come down equally hard on politicians and citizens. In this case, Brutus the Man, submitted to the Law.
We now live in a society where Self (determination, control, etc) only matters for politicians and other privileged. The State is now the mind of the population and Self has been relegated to a few specific areas such as sex and drugs whereas people willingly give up many other rights for these simple indulgences.
Rule of Law really only applies to working, middle class, citizens. Illegal aliens, grifters, neer do wells, and the privileged skate along just outside the rules as a super-citizen class protected by the State.

These elections in odd years are effective special elections, much more driven by local concerns than national ones. How that's supposed to relate to a presidential election is curious, especially since the idea that off year elections are at all predictive of the next general election is such a thoroughly debunked idea.

A number of states have programs to encourage it. Actual people who help you get on disability by any means they can get away with.
Welfare is co-funded by the states. Disability is all federal. The states love shifting people from set of rolls to the other.
Disability fraud is a serious problem for so very many reasons.

I see it everyday. I have one WC claimant though that attempted to get SSDI and they turned him down multiple times. He is a partial paraplegic who requires catherization. The one person I have that actually should receive SSDI can't get it.

Once again, all politics are local, and each race is specific to the candidates. In Mississippi, you cannot escape the race factor in elections. 2015 was a race between a very popular white Governor, and a career black city machine politician. A whole lot of people who may not have been Republican still wouldn't show up and vote for the black guy.
Yesterday, Mississippi Dem's ran a white blue-dog type candidate against the white Republican, who was not running for re-election. Not a surprise that he got a whole lot more turnout.

He *might* need PA. I suspect he might be able to survive losing it, but am not sure - especially this far out. If he wins in '20, I suspect is will be a narrower electoral margin than he got in '16. The Dems are insanely motivated and there will be no half-assing on either campaigning or fraud in the Upper Midwest this time around.
Trump has a good message, a huge war chest and is doubling his ground game as compared to '16 and I just pray that it is enough. It might not be.

Just having the works give the gallery prestige, but I agree with you. My hometown gallery has six Rockwells that they never show. They also sold off their entire classical art collection to focus on Modernism and Contemporary art. The dust-up it caused was spectacular.
Anything on paper cannot be shown with regularity because paper is very fragile and needs extra special conditions to be displayed, and can only be shown for limited periods of time.

Most history classes consist of a series of milestones but provide no context. That drove me crazy when it was a period that I found interesting. That's why I read so much diverse material about colonial and early American history: art, cooking, technology, fabric arts, farming, music, literature, etc. It forms a tapestry to be appreciated not just a few items in isolation. The reissuing of many journals and diaries of the day has been especially helpful.

"Oh hell yeah." When I was an underclassman. all the rage at the Great Schools was the "residential college," where a group all stayed together and majored in One Big Thing for a whole year. Even old Second-Rate State came up with a version of it for qualified honors students, and it was a hell of a thing. Best part, if you're studying the higher level thoughts of the time, the math, philosophy, engineering, you can more or less get a feel for what they were humming, what was in the back of their mind as it were. Skipping to milieu.
I had a year in the middle ages, and it was a wondrous thang. The difference for me was that instead of spending evenings with the gang, I worked night shift in a glass plant. They really admired my bandages.

Speaking of trolls (which we are bound to see a number of today)...
Last week, I looked into a recent leak from Shareblue that revealed some of how their trolling operation works.
A couple of takeaways:
1.) Internally, they refer to their paid trolls as "Stalwarts." Conveniently, this rhymes with "Ballwarts," which is how I will always refer to them.
2.) They are surprisingly well organized, with a decent IT infrastructure. When they pick a topic to troll about (in the case of this leak, it was Epstein), they send out a blast email to a group of Ballwarts, giving them their marching orders. It contains a broad list of "do's and dont's." Further, each Ballwart has a Shareblue Dashboard that connects them with knowledgebase articles containing more detailed talking points on the given topic. I assume it also tracks their efforts.
3.) Inferring from what I've seen of their work on a day-to-day basis, this technical savvy has not offset the low-quality of the Ballwart hiring pool.
4.) One thing I found interesting from the leaked email, is that Shareblue apparently has a standing order for their Ballwarts: wherever possible/appropriate, they say "As Always - ROLCON!" This abbreviates "Roleplay As Conservative."

You've got to realize that in large Texas cities, the vote is going to be racial, and you can't escape that. In Houston, teh Dem candidate is black, and for black voters, Corruption is a *plus* because they think they'll get in on it, too.
A conservative white anglo candidate will never win the Mayor's race in Houston (or Dallas, or Austin, or San Antonio) again. The only play for Republicans is to recruit conservative hispanic candidates who can split the race based voting blocks. A lot of people don't like to hear that, but it's the only path.
