Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Why not relax and stay awhile? Not an order, just a friendly suggestion.

A Little of This. A Little of That.

Have a new puppy? Puppy proof that house.

Our friend and Open Blogger KT asks, "Would a cat ever have a face this guilty?" Cute.

My poodle Charlie graduating from beginning dog training. We were held back only once. He'll be a two year old adult in December so we're going to have a bark mitzvah. - Anonosaurus Wrecks

Congrats to you and Charlie. It sounds as if you've been hanging around with Muldoon. Cute photo, thanks for the submission.

Alamogordo, usually a lurker, sometimes commenter here. These are my 2 year old boys. They are some type of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mixes we think. Max is the brown, and Rocky looks like a little tiny Rottweiler. Max has a flag tail, and Rocky has hobbit paws, with extra fur between his toes.

We had put down 2 cats and 2 dogs within two years, took a little break and Mr. Alamogordo was feeling very blue one day, so I went to the County doggie jail and brought Max home first. I told hubby that he had a brother I left behind, so Monday morning before they were open we were there to pick up Rocky.

They are a lot of fun, and play well together, mostly. They have added joy to our lives.

Thank you to Ace and all the cobs. Y'all also add joy to our lives.

You have stated extremely well what pets do, "They have dded joy to our lives". Congrats on the happy ending rescue. I'm sure the brothers are happy too! Thank you for your support.

Hello Ace Morons,

It’s been tough as we had to say bye to Stella, our rescue dog of 12 years in June. We weren’t looking to have another dog but, things happen for a reason so,

Meet Tilda, she’s our first pup. A Pit Bull we think. - Aaron

First off, sorry to hear about your pet Stella. Losing a pet sucks. But congrats on the new puppy. She looks adorable. Can't wait to hear some stories about her in the upcoming months and years.

We live in Alaska, we have five dogs. Three of our five pups running to their mom: Thor is the Staffie mix, Midget is heeler/spaniel, and Bug is the heeler hybrid in front. The remaining two of our five. Sammie is the brown sable, and Eli is the black and cream. They are gentle sweeties. Bug is behind Sammie. - LrS

I apologize if I got the pets out of order, looks like a happy gang. Since you live in AK do you work any of them with sleds? J/K. Thank you for your emails.

Ziggy, the Bichon who IDs as a pit bull

Long time lurker.

Not mine, but I dogsit him at least a week a month. I’m the cool uncle who buys him beer and cigarettes.

Great dog, low maintenance but insists on touching you if you’re sitting or in bed. Belly rubs are welcome 24/7. - Kevin

Quite the proud uncle you are. Handsome nephew you have there. And I bet Ziggy's parents are thankful for the babysitter. Thanks.

My dad is an AVID reader and commenter on AoS, and I’ve always gotten a kick out of your pet thread, but it wasn’t until today that I’ve had any OC worthy of posting. I woke up this morning to these two, Brutus and Friday ...guess which is which... clearly in the midst of an important plotting session, and Friday clearly doesn’t look too happy with my interrupting.

-Sam / AKA “Grundlestrike”

Hey Sam and commenter Dad. Glad you folks like the AoSHQ as much as you do. Friday and Brutus appear to be a cunning pair. Quite the plotting session going on there.

Quite the smiling dog you have there lyle. It also appears that Jazzy gets to spend some time in bed. Thanks for being lurker and submitting Jazzy's photo.

3 This morning was terrible...

Baby hasn't been doing so well, hasn't eaten anything since Thurday, drinking lots of water, only getting up to pee and so unsteady on her feet.

She managed to get upstairs last night (like usual) but couldn't go down them this morning-- we had to put her on her doggy bed and slide her down the stairs on it. She's too heavy to lift! Too late, though, she couldn't hold her bladder, poor baby.

She drank a bunch more water and then went outside to puke it up, and had seemed a bit disoriented through this whole ordeal.

We took her to the vet... I signed her death warrant... feels like sh!t, but she's not suffering any more.

Good breeders will grill prospective buyers and refuse to sell to anyone not up to the task; it's guesswork and best to err on the side of caution. Plus they're rare enough that a big worry will be to keep the bloodlines healthy.

Our 5 yr old Brittany, Dolly, wants to mother her. Midnight has been with us three weeks now and has acclimated to Dolly. They were face to face since day 1.

Midnight has been thinking about ambushing Dolly, but aborts the mission at the last moment. I give it two more weeks until they're playing tag.

41 We almost added a kitten to our family this week. There's a creek that runs behind my wife's office, and with the torrential rain we had for a couple of days, it was raging. Someone noticed a kitten struggling in the current and rescued her. Beautiful long hair.

They brought her into the office, and comforted her best they could. Poor thing was soaked through and through, but gladly accepted cuddles and sweet talk. Unfortunately, she couldn't stand up and was obviously injured. They turned her over to the rescue shelter, but the kitty was too injured to make and and died in the night. She was only about 8 weeks old. At least she didn't have to struggle in the cold rain in her final hours.

No idea how she ended up out in that rain and in the creek. My (cynical?) guess is that someone threw her out of a car on the street that runs by there.

57 Reverse mohawk look above tail. Not a great look.

Cat #2 might have an allergy there-- my Casey started licking off his fur around the base of his tail two summers ago, and it turned out to be a pollen allergy (which cats experience as a skin disorder rather than the watery eyes and upper respiratory symptoms that humans get from pollen).

Posted by: Basement Cat at November 02, 2019 04:03 PM (pPNCa)

58 Tilda definitely has that pit bull face -- we've had two half-pits, one crossed with a Dalmatian -- died a couple of years ago. The other, crossed with a miniature Dachshund, is still with us, but I'm not sure for how much longer.

Judging from those two, pits are great! (If you like lots of affection and can manage to keep them exercised, at least.) Well behaved, very friendly to humans and cats, maybe less so to other dogs.

Several hundred adopted beasties made it home from Iraq and Astan, officially or otherwise.

Sadly, hundreds maybe thousands more were destroyed as public and K-9 health hazards in the established camps. Some escaped through underground railroads and rat lines shuffling the beasts from section to section and even out of the camps until the all clear. One SF unit notoriously hooded up and put out a flyer holding a gun to their dog's head 'Nobody inspect us or the dog gets it!' - it prompted too much attention and the vet squad got the dog.

Really? I am disinclined to believe stories like this. Are we supposed to believe there was a big glut of unsold Malinois pups in the marketplace, that were suddenly snapped up in a frenzy of impulse buying?

I could maybe be persuaded to believe there was a surge of inquiries to breeders of Malinois, but I doubt a vast number of transactions took place, yet.
Now that the breed has entered the public consciousness, perhaps a bunch of puppy mills will spring up, and we will get a glut of poorly bred, ill-trained Malinois within a year or two.

It's not like the situation with Dalmatians, and the Disney movie. That movie had a run of months in the theaters, and a bazillion kids saw it, and a good fraction of that bazillion kids said, "Daddy, Daddy, I wanna wanna wanna have a spotted doggie, and I'll hold my breath until I turn blue, if you don't get me one!"

75 I have a Norwegian Elkhound named Remington. They are one of the best-kept secrets this side of the pond. I traded two purebred Nigerian goats for even prior to his birth. It is part of the family and, arguably, my best pal.

Absolute excellent watchdog, but will never go sideways and tear anyone up (that is their genetic MO). Our neighbor saw him coming and with trepidation said he looked "primordial."

I raised my first Norwegian Elkhound in 1980. His name was Nika (good Cold Warn name). Their intelligence is equaled only by their independent spirit. He is truly part of the family!

78 >>Mrs. Harper was/is a big supporter of animal welfare organizations. When he became the leader of the Conservative Party and later Prime Minister, she did a lot for the Ottawa Humane Society. They actually fostered cats at 24 Sussex during his tenure as PM.

I flew in an out of Toronto a couple weeks ago and ran into Stephen Harper at the airport. I was surprised at how lightly he was protected, lots of people were just walking up to him to say hello.

Howdy all - what a great looking group this week! I'm at the farm and WeaselDog is home but two of the neighbors hunting dogs just stopped by to say hi!

81 Weasel, did you offer them a sammich?

Posted by: Ben Had at November 02, 2019 04:40 PM (xjYds)

82 Really? I am disinclined to believe stories like this. Are we supposed to believe there was a big glut of unsold Malinois pups in the marketplace, that were suddenly snapped up in a frenzy of impulse buying?

Heard there was a run on Malamutes during Game of Thrones - again, a dog needing an experienced hand.

Not sure if it's true ...

88 Have 2 new granddogs in the last week. Both rescues. Haven't met them yet. Hopefully will right before Christmas.
Been tough for stepson and his bride. They lost both of their dogs in the last year.

89 Old Dog is slowing down dramatically, an occasional limp, etc. (No, not you nice human olddog.) Went to vet, and have an opiod and she actually was good with us trying glucosamine and fish oil if it makes him feel better. We'll see how it works. The blood work showed he has some liver problems, but kidlet is ready to do the xrays, etc. Vet says his range of motion is very good, and as far as I can tell, he really only limps noticeably when kidlet is watching.

As long as he seems happy, if Old Dog is just in regular age decline I am perfectly happy to support him living as long as he wants. Have tried to discuss with kidlet that spending megabux is not always appropriate and I am actually grateful that our vet is happy to support that attitude rather than major debt for an elderly dog who would freak if he was hospitalized for longer than overnight.

91 Howdy y'all

Just finished planting bulbs for the day. More to
do tomorrow.

Lucy says meow!

Our four footed friends are the best friends. Thank God for giving them to us. Even if only for a short time.

92 Hey Nurse, hugs to you and Lucy. Any word from the boychick?

Posted by: Ben Had at November 02, 2019 05:10 PM (xjYds)

93 42: I love that concept, pets waiting for you to play with them again. It could not be heaven without doggehs. One of mine would not be waiting as there'd be someone waiting for him already. One of my rescues belonged to a graduate student who died in a car accident one snowy, icy evening. From his info she was athletic and liked to take him running, and there was even a pic of them provided by one of her fellow students. He was in superb shape, but every time a young woman bearing any resemblance ran by, you could tell he was still faithful to her. My current rescue was not in such great shape when I got him, and is thoroughly devoted.

No word yet. Today is his 19th birthday. I'm sad I can't hug him and hear his voice.

Posted by: Ben Had at November 02, 2019 05:16 PM (xjYds)

98 Mustbequantum. I was giving old arthritic dogs devils claw powder and about the time the DC was losing effectiveness was the big "tumeric cures everything" fad. So I bought some ground tumeric and added that. It did indeed get the doggies moving well again. Tumeric is supposed to be good for kidneys and liver too. I started taking it too and lowered my alleve usage and now only take Alleve after a spill or overdid it on a weekend with muscles I don't use day to day. It is not a miracle drug/herb - I noticed no effect on my mare's bad knee, but it definitely helps much of the time.

101 It's not like the situation with Dalmatians, and the Disney movie. That movie had a run of months in the theaters, and a bazillion kids saw it, and a good fraction of that bazillion kids said, "Daddy, Daddy, I wanna wanna wanna have a spotted doggie, and I'll hold my breath until I turn blue, if you don't get me one!"
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 02, 2019 04:06 PM (/sgva)

Dalmatians are *very* strong dogs and need a lot of exercise. They're very smart and I have a friend that dotes on the breed but widely portraying them just as cute cuddly puppies was cinematic malpractice.

Vet is a tiny little woman who I feel obligated to help up when she is on the floor and told her my knees hurt for her. I limp nowadays from falling off too many barstools when I was younger.

107 Thanks, Floridachick.

Guess the thread is dead now, but I'm not into movies tonight.

Prefer to hang out here while all I can do is just blubber and cry. Damn, I miss that silly dog so much. I'm such a stupid sentimental old broad...

Posted by: JQ at November 02, 2019 09:44 PM (gP/Z3)

108 JQ, I am sorry for your loss. I've had to put down all but two of the dogs I've had since 1975, and it has sucked every time. Remember, though, that all good dogs go to Dog Heaven, where it's always sunny and 70*F, the water bowls are full and in the shade, Milk Bones grow low on the bushes, and all your old dogs are eagerly waiting for you.

One of the two I haven't had to put down was adopted by my son two years ago when it became obvious to both of us that I was no longer physically able to deal with a big, boisterous boy dog. Brutus has become an absolute sweetheart under Sam's tutelage. Imagine my delight to find Brutus' photo in today's Pet Thread (with his little feline buddy Friday). To have a son who reads and posts here at AoSHQ who is good with dogs (and kids and old folks too) makes a dad right proud indeed.

Posted by: Cowboyneal at November 02, 2019 11:18 PM (U2zo0)

109 You must be proud indeed, Cowboyneal.

I've had many pets over the years, but never got as 'close to' any as this one. Hit pretty hard, it did.

Thanks for your thoughts!
