I suspect it may well have been - to use Clapper's words - a "tapestry" of content, e.g., from various sources.
Sources like Blumenthal. And probably Glenn Simpson. And probably several others.
None of them are "reliable" though, thus they went to the Steele Laundromat to clean it up and make it "reliable" before feeding it to different organizations so it could confirm itself.
This is called, to use a dirty word, a "conspiracy" and if folks like Lee Smith and Dan Bongino can pull together the great work of folks like John Solomon and Chuck Ross and so in public, loudly, then it also means the conspirators were (or became) pretty sloppy.

I try to keep track of voices that have done well in the past. For instance, Matt Taibi of Rolling Stone consistently does good work, even if he is a leftist. The problem with so many MSM publications is that there's not even any thought behind them anymore, for instance any story from the NYT: Give me the topic and I can write everything they're going to say in my head before I read the first paragraph. Mark Hemingway did this great article about people scrambling to prove which secret accounts contain money diverted to them by Qadaffi, because if they can prove that, they can collect huge finders fees for something like 60 billion dollars. The fees would run into the hundreds of millions.
That is, a court could seize the funds, but you need proof for that.
Apparently some people were attempting to use government connections to get the State Department to (illegally) give them information they could use for these purposes...

Because they used to be influential among a certain class. Indeed, they still *are* influential among a certain class. The leaders of that class, though, showed its true colors and and caused many non-commanding members of the class to draw back in revulsion and leave the club.
Their influence is still there - but not their base. Those they are influencing don't matter and are already bought. There is no point in continuing to pay them.
This will be one area where the election of 2020 will be good regardless of outcome. No matter what, these people are finished. If Trump wins, they have failed and will be dropped like the sacks of oleaginous rotten potatoes they are. If Trump loses, the game changes so profoundly that they are no longer needed at all anyway because all the slots in a seriously diminished "official opposition" are already held by men more important than they are.
By January of 2021, regardless of who wins, these people are standing under bridges holding signs that say, "will bloviate for food." By February, as desperation truly sets in, their signs will change to "will blow for cheeseburgers."

The other way, demonstrated by Robert Stacy McCain was to work one's way up the ladder by taking a series of crummy jobs at small publications and working one's way up the ladder. Those hopes have basically collapsed as a viable career path other than for Trustifarians who hope desperately someday to be taken to the promised land of the NYTraitors and Washington Compost.
Local reportage is dying throughout the nation leaving only a hard core leftist remnant that is destroying the remaining trust in their own institution (see Des Moines Register for that one).
Those that are pretty and articulate enough to be on TV are by and large commenters as actual reportage comes from NYT, WAPO, Reuters, AP, and to some extent TV News Networks on occasion. There is a whole specialty press that most of us outside of that niche see such as business reporting, true political and administrative news, celebrity reporting, technical subjects such as firearms, crafts, and so on. I suspect that a larger number of these folks are righties depending on the area but the topics are basically apolitical for the most part.
Now, reporting jobs at the premier general publication places are very hard to obtain with lots of applicants and few positions. Thus, it is very easy for liberal bosses to file 13 any people that they are just not comfortable with during the application process. Political inclinations are not a protected class in most areas of the country and prior written work unless someone is schizophrenic can indicate to HR and admin which candidates might be suspect.
As a result, people hew to whatever line that keeps them their job. This is similar to the overwhelmingly liberal administrations in academia as well. Anyone who escapes the initial screenings for badthink keeps their thoughts and doubts to themselves. Over time, it is difficult to keep two different personas so cognitive dissonance generally causes the person to join the herd even if they initially supported something else. Organizational culture makes it hard to be a dissident in any organization because most people do not want to be ostracized from society.

There are two reasons, as I see it, to remain ignorant of information.
One is that you are truly just too lazy, too disinterested, too distracted to bother. I think that describes probably a good 80% of the American public on matters of national interest, and I may be being generous in estimating 20% actually bother to read and learn.
The second is one that I suffer from myself, and that is that I don't want to know the counter argument because I already took previous information or experience and made my decision based on that and consider much of the counter information to clever wordplay, postmodernist theory or irrationalism.
For instance, I believe there are two genders and I'm fairly committed to that thought process. So I don't go around reading psychiatric journals, medical studies, opinion pieces or sociology papers that seek to try and disprove my position. For me that position is a fixed place. It's a priori knowledge.
I think this is much of what NeverTrump suffers themselves, though I admit it's fairly obvious when you see them plagiarize Ace's columns from time to time, that they suffer from the former as well.
But to the latter, I think it's a fixed point that Trump is Bad, Trump is not the leader of the party, so they spend their time circling around the food pellet nipping off little bites of Orange Man Bad because that is the premise they seek to support. They don't want to prove otherwise and the enemy of their enemy is their ideological friend. That's why they sound like liberals. That's why they have become liberals. To acquiesce mentally to another PoV and examine Trump from a purely objective stance would to be surrender their a priori knowledge.
If I say, well, I think some people are misgendered, I kinda have to destroy my two-gender perspective.
To say Orange Man Sometimes Great at Accomplishing Conservative Goals and Unfairly Villainized isn't just to cede tiny points when evidence in clear, it's to completely abandon Orange Man Bad. And if you don't agree that Orange Man Bad, in swampy circles, you get ostracized. It would be no different than saying "Well, there are some things that women can't do" around the same set. You won't have an honest discussion about what you meant by the comment, you'll just be cancelled.
And so NeverTrump they must, because at this point, nobody on the right wants them back and if they show even a modicum of support for PDT the left won't want them either. Then they'll have to write about sports, which no soft cuck has any clue about.

Trump has to know that the Deep State will never give him a moment's peace for the rest of his life, for the sin of stopping the Clinton crime empire in its tracks. They will go after his kids and his close associates as well. They will not stop.
Because of this, and the fact that he is a counterpuncher extraordinaire, he must know that he has one chance to use the instruments of the State to crush his foes through the justice system. Once he leaves office, he's on his own. Unfortunately, I don't trust that a President Pence will have his back on this one.
If he's going to counterattack, he must go Michael Corleone on them ASAP.

I can sadly report, from inside experience involving at the time one of the top ongoing world stories, that there *are* real reporters - often non-American - at the wires, and elsewhere, whose good work was routinely quashed/inverted by editors in London, Paris, New York. It was amazing. I saw the reports filed, alongside the published piece. I watched their skype exchanges.
Outrageous.
There's a desperate need for real info/reporting, there's a demand for it, there are people actually trying to provide it. But the editorial layer literally suppresses it, inverts it, distorts it.

As I understand it, these people were not "bribing colleges" to take their crotch-fruit; they were bribing individuals or hiring fixers to game the admissions system to ensure their kids got a place, thereby denying entry spots to more qualified kids whose parents didn't game the system.
