Horror: Truck Discovered Near London Containing 39 Dead Bodies, In Likely Human Smuggling Mishap

They're using refrigerated trucks to smuggle in illegals. Those seal up pretty tight to keep the cold in.

They also keep fresh air from coming in, and almost 40 people in an enclosed space will quickly exhaust the oxygen and fill the hold with high levels of carbon dioxide.

Britain has upped its surveillance at airports and sea ports so human smugglers are moving to trucking illegal migrants on trucks. The trucks are loaded aboard ships for transport.

I would imagine the deaths occurred when the truck was aboard the ship at sea. The sea noise and general noise from lots of trucks and cars and containers moving around would probably drown out the screams and pounding of the dying migrants.

This will be used by Open Borders people -- and anti-Brexit Remainders -- to argue that we need Open Borders forever.

Instead of just making sure that illegal migrants cannot stay in the countries they illegally move to, thus taking away the incentive for such dangerous trips.

No, they don't. That's true of an inert gas, such as N2, but NOT of CO2. Quite the contrary - they doubtless were screaming and panic-stricken because rising CO2 levels in the blood trigger the impulse to breathe.

That's why it's a bad idea to hyperventilate before swimming underwater. You purge most of the CO2 from your blood stream, and then as you consume the oxygen the resulting CO2 levels in the blood are not sufficient to make you realize you need to surface and breathe.

The way smuggling works in UK is similar to how lorry theft used to work before all the GPS and CCD made it too risky -- the trucker is in on it, and paid to deliver the container to what is called a "slaughter" (for slaughterhouse because they strip the vehicle after emptying it.) where it is taken care of.

A legit trucker would not deliver a container to an empty warehouse for stripping, and you can not unload a bunch of illegals in the middle of a real warehouse.

Reefer container temperature could be set at a comfort temp like 70 degrees and fans arranged for fresh air. On a sea voyage a cargo hold or even on deck the inside of the box could be very hot. Running the reefer at the right temp would be the way to make the trip bearable for the occupents. Chances are the driver and ships' crews involved had no idea people were in the container. Something obviously went wrong.

carbon monoxide is not noticeable. Oxygen deprivation is not noticeable. Carbon dioxide sucks since that is what makes you gasp for breath. I do not know if the CO2 levels would be that high though. More likely the O2 levels dropped low enough to kill them first.

CO binds to the Fe(II) of hemoglobin in an essentially irreversible fashion. IIRC, CO2 binds reversibly to hemoglobin at pendant amino groups, to form carbamic acid moieties, rather than to the Fe(II).

It's actually worse than that.

They claim we should have open border and therefore anyone who can run the gauntlet wins.

So people take horrible risks and many die on the way.

If they truly wanted open borders, we would *bring them in ourselves.*

They won't admit it, but it's truly the humane thing to do. Even if we said: "Okay, no border. None. Come on in!" There would be people who die in their haste and need to get here.

That blood would be on Open Border crowd's hands because they won't actually import people nor admit how many millions they want to bring in.

So they play this game where they act super-concerned, but assume that because of the danger, not that many people will actually make it. If you just ask them if we can offer citizen ship to all of Latin American they'll say no, that's crazy, but they're doing it on the installment plan.

With lots of pointless deaths added in for flavor.

There were several people killed preparing for STS-1 by going into a space in the tail of the orbiter that had an N2 purge going on while on the pad. IIRC, the first guy went in, passed out, and the second guy went in after him. One died on the scene, one two weeks later, and one died several years later from injuries. Two others were also involved.
