Sunday Morning Book Thread 10-27-2019

Morelia Public Library Mexico 01.jpg
Morelia Public Library, Michoacán Mexico

Good morning to all you 'rons, 'ettes, lurkers, and lurkettes, wine moms, frat bros, crétins sans pantalon (who are technically breaking the rules), suck-ups, screw-ups, cock-ups, and buttercups. Welcome once again to the stately, prestigious, internationally acclaimed and high-class Sunday Morning Book Thread, a weekly compendium of reviews, observations, snark, witty repartee, hilarious bon mots, and a continuing conversation on books, reading, spending way too much money on books, writing books, and publishing books by escaped oafs and oafettes who follow words with their fingers and whose lips move as they read. Unlike other AoSHQ comment threads, the Sunday Morning Book Thread is so hoity-toity, pants are required. Even if it's these pants, which should never have to be seen outside of a teenaged girl's slumber party.

Pic Note:

I was looking for "haunted library" or "ghostly library" pics for the main photo since we're close to Halloween, but this one in Mexico came up, and I liked it so much. I just had to use it.

Urban Decay Is Scary, Too

This is the Mark Twain Library, Detroit, closed in 1996 for renovations and never reopened.

Blows Against the Empire

Ace already covered this on Friday, which is always a possibility as I write the book thread days in advance, but there's a new book coming out, The Plot Against the President: The True Story of How Congressman Devin Nunes Uncovered the Biggest Political Scandal in U.S. History by investigative journalists Lee Smith, which

...tells the story of how Congressman Devin Nunes uncovered the operation to bring down the commander-in-chief. While popular opinion holds that Russia subverted democratic processes during the 2016 elections, the real damage was done not by Moscow or any other foreign actor. Rather, this was a slow-moving coup engineered by a coterie of the American elite, the "deep state," targeting not only the president, but also the rest of the country. The plot officially began July 31, 2016 with the counterintelligence investigation that the FBI opened to probe Russian infiltration of Donald Trump's presidential campaign. But the bureau never followed any Russians. In fact, it was an operation to sabotage Trump, the candidate, then president-elect, and finally the presidency. The conspirators included political operatives, law enforcement and intelligence officials, and the press.

The impending publication of this book didn't set too well with former Clinton goon/bag man/fixer/ 'Sleazy' Sidney Blumenthal (Secet Service code name: mollusk), who threatened legal action because he claimed the book was, ( *giggle* ) 'defamatory':

“Blumenthal tried to stop it from being published,” the source told Fox News, saying the Hillary Clinton confidant sent threatening letters to Smith and publisher Center Street, a division of Hachette Book Group.

“The Clinton machine wanted to intimidate Lee,” the source said.

Smith himself would not discuss any purported legal threats, but acknowledged opposition to the book from those in the Clintons' orbit.

“People in the Clinton world are keen for this book not to come out,” Smith said.

The book, which is scheduled for release Oct. 29, includes allegations about the origin of the Russia probe and the involvement of Democratic operatives with the unverified anti-Trump dossier compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele. The source said that the publisher’s legal team found Blumenthal’s legal claim “meritless,” and they intend to release the book as planned.

The Kindle edition of Lee's book is available for pre-order for $14.99 and if you purchase it now, it will be automatically delivered to your device on Tuesday, a couple of days from now.

And how low do you have to go to defame a lower life form like Sid Blumenthal? I mean, seriously, that's a mighty high bar. Or low, as the case might be.

Moron Recommendations

152 So this week I have been reading Roger Stone's Tricky Dick: The Rise, Fall and Rise of Richard Nixon, which basically pins Watergate on John Dean (desperate to prevent his girlfriend / wife Mo from being found out as a DC call girl) and the CIA (furious at Nixon's attempts at detente). Al Haig also stars as the conniver who more or less escorts Nixon out of the White House in order to gain more power for himself.

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing

I think we're not going to know the full truth of this until Woodward and Bernstein, and everybody who has ever been connected with them at the Washington Post, are dead.

Stone reveals how the Kennedy’s wiretapped Nixon’s hotel room the night before the Nixon-Kennedy debate, and stole Nixon's medical records from his psychiatrist’s office. Stone lays out how Kennedy running mate Lyndon Johnson stole Texas from JFK through vote fraud while Mayor Richard Daley stole Illinois, and how JFK actually lost the popular vote...

“The mainstream media’s interpretation of the facts surrounding the Watergate episode are a fantastic and grotesque distortion of historical truth,” said Stone. “Cursory examination of the facts in Watergate will reveal that the actions which caused the fall of Nixon cannot be reduced to the simplistic account summarized by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of the Washington Post.”The author outlines how White House Counsel John Dean, planned, pushed and covered-up the Watergate break-in, then sought to avoid responsibility for it...

The Kindle edition of Tricky Dick: The Rise, Fall and Rise of Richard Nixon is approximately $11.

Other morons recommended Silent Coup by Len Colodny, which no less a personage than G. Gordon Liddy thinks is closest to the truth of what actually happened:

This is the true story of betrayal at the nation's highest level. Unfolding with the suspenseful pace of a le Carre spy thriller, it reveals the personal motives and secret political goals that combined to cause the Watergate break-in and destroy Richard Nixon. Investigator Len Colodny and journalist Robert Gettlin relentlessly pursued the people who brought down the president. Their revelations shocked the world and forever changed our understanding of politics, of journalism, and of Washington behind closed doors. Dismantling decades of lies, Silent Coup tells the truth.

I think pretty much everyone agrees that John Dean is the real shit-weasel here. So it's no surprise that the current batch of scurvy Democrats are trotting him out as some sort of an expert on impeachment. This is like hiring Al Capone to do your taxes.

You can purchase Silent Coup on Kindle for $9.99.

Update: I feel that I should offer up another book that I've mentioned here several times before: It Didn't Start With Watergate by Victor Lasky. He extensively documents how every 'dirty trick' and illegal activity that Nixon supposedly ordered, including wire-tapping, illegal contributions, use of government agencies to harass political enemies, etc., were all carried out relentlessly and enthusiastically by previous (Democratic) administrations, Truman, JFK, and the wildly corrupt LBJ, with nary a peep from our guardians in the mainstream press. But when it was Nixon, whom the press hated with the heat of a thousand suns, it all suddenly became A National Crisis and A Constitutional Crisis and The Worst Thing That Ever Happened In The History of the U.S. And this despite the fact that the Watergate committee admitted that they had no impeachable evidence.

Last week, I offered the opinion that Pat Frank's Alas, Babylon, publish in 1959, was "the godfather of the post-apocalyptic science fiction sub-genre." Which sounded great when I typed it, until a bunch of counter-examples showed up in the comments, including the classic A Canticle For Leibowitz, a moron favorite which was also published in 1959. But there have been other ones, earlier ones that I hadn't heard about.

340 Note that all postapocalypse stories are essentially ripping off "By the Waters of Babylon" by Stephen Vincent Benet, published in 1937!

Posted by: Trimegistus at October 20, 2019 11:43 AM (DYSh2)

The Amazon blurb says

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Stephen Vincent Benet's By the Waters of Babylon is the first, most influential work of post-apocalyptic fiction of the twentieth century. Its haunting story of a tribal priest who investigates the ruins of an ancient city is an unforgettable and challenging reminder of both the fragility of civilization and the hope for human development.

This is included in the collection By the Waters of Babylon, and Other Fantasies and Prophecies, available for only $2.99 on Kindle (h/t moron commenter John F. MacMichael). Also included are outstanding stories such as "Into Egypt", "The Blood of the Martyrs" and "The Curfew Tolls".

$2.99 is a fantastic price, so I couldn't resist.

And commenter NativeNH mentioned the novel Earth Abides:

A disease of unparalleled destructive force has sprung up almost simultaneously in every corner of the globe, all but destroying the human race. One survivor, strangely immune to the effects of the epidemic, ventures forward to experience a world without man. What he ultimately discovers will prove far more astonishing than anything he'd either dreaded or hoped for.

According to the cover notes, this book is the inspiration for Stephen King's The Stand.

Note to Canadian morons: Pat Frank's Alas, Babylon, as well as his other novels, are in the public domain due to less stringent copyright laws in your country.

If you live outside Canada, check your country's copyright laws before downloading (h/t 'hooodathunkit').

Lastly:

158 The post-apocalyptic book that made a big impression on early me was Nevil Shute's book "On The Beach", which was originally called "The Last Days On Earth". It still is a chilling thought.

And I know I've recommended The Annotated HP Lovecraft here before. There's now a new companion volume, Beyond Arkham.

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at October 20, 2019 09:41 AM (Ki5SV)

The first book in this series is simply called The New Annotated H. P. Lovecraft:

In this volume, Leslie S. Klinger reanimates Lovecraft [iswhdt --OM] with clarity and historical insight, charting the rise of the erstwhile pulp writer, whose rediscovery and reclamation into the literary canon can be compared only to that of Poe or Melville. Weaving together a broad base of existing scholarship with his own original insights, Klinger appends Lovecraft's uncanny oeuvre and Kafkaesque life story in a way that provides context and unlocks many of the secrets of his often cryptic body of work...

[He] collects here twenty-two of Lovecraft's best, most chilling "Arkham" tales, including "The Call of Cthulhu," At the Mountains of Madness, "The Whisperer in Darkness," "The Shadow Over Innsmouth," "The Colour Out of Space," and others. With nearly 300 illustrations, including full-color reproductions of the original artwork and covers from Weird Tales and Astounding Stories, and more than 1,000 annotations, this volume illuminates every dimension of H. P. Lovecraft and stirs the Great Old Ones in their millennia of sleep.

This is one of those books where you should probably spend the extra buck for the dead tree version, as the illustrations and annotations are undoubtedly a lot more impressive than if you viewed them on your phone or tablet. I many have to ask for this as a Christmas present this year.

Similarly, you'll be plunking down $35 for the hardback edition of the second volume MP4 mentions, The New Annotated H.P. Lovecraft: Beyond Arkham, and you'll smile while you're doing it:

Now, in this final volume, best-selling author Leslie S. Klinger reanimates twenty-five additional stories, the balance of Lovecraft’s significant fiction, including “Rats in the Wall,” a post– World War I story about the terrors of the past, and the newly contextualized “The Horror at Red Hook,” which recently has been adapted by best- selling novelist Victor LaValle. In following Lovecraft’s own literary trajectory, readers can witness his evolution from Rhode Island critic to prescient literary genius whose titanic influence would only be appreciated decades after his death. Including hundreds of eye-opening annotations and dozens of rare images, Beyond Arkham finally provides the complete picture of Lovecraft’s unparalleled achievements in fiction.

200 illustrations.

My family can buy me this for a Christmas present next year.

75 My other book is "Nine Perfect Strangers" by Liane Moriarty, about nine people with various problems gathering at a remote health resort in Australia. Tranquillum House is headed by a strangely charismatic director who has an exciting new protocol to help unlock buried issues. It may not, in the strictest sense, be legal or ethical.

Each chapter is a part of the story unfolding as seen by the characters. What I like is that you start out with unflattering impressions but gradually learn their backstory and they become much more sympathetic.

It's also very funny.

Nothing I can add to this review. Nine Perfect Strangers costs $9.99 on Kindle.

1 Have been reading the Mage Born series by Michael Manning it has been a good one but I got kinda burned out on it after the 4th book. So I have moved on to a new series by Ryk E. Spoor beginning with Grand Central Arena. This was recommended by a Moron here last week. Well it turns out that it is a Space Opera genre book. This is one sub-category of SF that I have never felt much for but I will give it a shot.

14 Hola, Book Nerds.

I read "Why Meadow Died" by Andrew Pollack and Max Eden. On February 14, 2018 17 students and staff were murdered and 14 wounded at Majory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The subtitle of the book is: The People and Policies that Created the Parkland Shooter and Endanger America's Students.

As usual shortly after the slaughter the media, lawmakers, and activists focused on gun control. Andrew Pollack, the father of Meadow Pollack who was a senior and was killed protecting a freshman girl who also died, and a few others did not. They found out there were dozens of times the killer, and the killings, could have been stopped. But due to Leftist/PC/Social Justice school policies pioneered in Broward County (which have spread throughout the country) and with the full cooperation and support of the Broward Co. Sheriff's Department nothing was done, except ignore all of the warning signs.

It's always a hell of a price to pay when leftists implement their version of utopia.

A timeline of the slaughter.

15 Hiya bibliophiliacs. I'm reading Kate Morton's "The Forgotten Garden", an old-fashioned, leisurely tale about a little girl abandoned on a ship bound for Australia in 1913 with nothing but a suitcase with a few clothes and a volume of fairy tales. She is adopted by a childless harbor master and his wife. When she is 21 they tell her the truth, and she sets out to find her family, which takes her to Cornwall.

It started out a bit slow but I am getting into it as her granddaughter also starts digging into the history.

21 I'm currently reading "The Washing of the Spears" by Donald R. Morris. A history of the rise and fall of the Zulu Nation. Morris gives a brief history of the Southern Cape colony founded by Europeans and the Bantu people from which the Zulu originated. During the 1820s under the leadership/dictatorship of Shaka Zulu (1787-182 the Zulus would form an empire. They would fall during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 to another empire, the British.

In the early 1800s was a period called "The Crushing." A series of inter-tribal wars that depopulated large areas of land and killed about 500k to maybe 2 million. Shaka Zulu did participate in the slaughter, but he wasn't alone. Many other tribes and tribal leaders were involved.

The phase "Washing of the Spears" refers to the Zulu practice of eviscerating the dead so as to release their spirit. Not sure why they felt the spirit couldn't get out through the spear holes they'd already made. I think they did it for fun.

24 I am nearly finished, and nearer the quitting point, of On the Road. No. 1 Son gave me the Kerouac/Burroughs collaboration And the Hippos Were Boiled in their Tanks, which was surprisingly not annoying and had some interesting noir flair.

Also, I haven't read any of the Beats except Howl and I should continue my education. The jacket blurb for On the Road calls it the voice of a generation. (Nobody wants to be that, Dylan ran away from that label as hard as he could).

Well, it has cemented my theory that The Fifties Were Stupid.

For crying out loud, in the fifties people liked Elvis.

I was giving Road the benefit of the doubt because even though it was famously written in a three week mad tear he had been working on it for seven years and had pared and revised it at the suggestion of editors and fellow writers. It might have been distilled in the moment.

No, it reads like something that starts out normal and becomes deranged. And he's so hip (hep, I guess, in those days) that he has to brag about seeing colored musicians play jazz and how it would be so much cooler to be colored than to be a white man. Well, Jack, you portray the coloreds as exotics. We don't meet any. There are no colored characters who are human, they're just cardboard cutouts for your hepness.

29 I read Bill O'Reilly's latest, The United States of Trump: How the President Really Sees America. O' Reilly has known the President for over thirty years which gave him unprecedented access to Trump and to his family. O' Reilly plays it down the middle. Certainly not a Never-Trumper, he isn't a fawning Hannity either. The result is the reader gets a real insight into the President's thinking and why he does the things he does. I found this to be a very interesting, informative book.

Recommended here last week, I read A Blaze of Glory: A Novel of the Battle of Shiloh by Jeff Shaara. This is the first in a trilogy about the Western Campaign of the Civil War. Shaara tell the story of the battle not only through the eyes of the generals, but through those of the lower ranks as well. His description of the Union counter-attack through the dead and dying of the day before is most telling of the horrors of war. I'm looking forward to reading the second in the trilogy, A Chain of Thunder: A Novel of the Siege of Vicksburg.

30 Currently reading The Curse of the Narrows, about the collision of a relief ship and an ammunition ship in the approaches to Halifax harbor in 1917. The Mont Blanc, carrying 60 tons of explosives, caught fire, and when the payload went up it produced the largest non natural explosion in history to that time. It wiped out a good portion of Halifax as well as damaging the rail lines that would be needed to bring relief. This was in December, during winter snows which would further disrupt rescue efforts. Much tragedy and heroism.

Would young people want to be initiated into the mysteries of a lodge or society? That seems "exclusionary", plus you probably can't Instagram the ceremonies.

44 Good morning all - I was briefly intrigued by mention of "The Forgotten Garden" but when the Kindle version costs as much as a print edition ... just no.
Working away this week on the latest book, started some notes and files for the next Luna City volume. Other than that, just plowing through Shelby Foote's "Civil War" ... and I have some of Bruce Catton's books also, picked up at various sales...

I read Earth Abides first when I was in HS. It may amuse the Horde to know that the author is that George R. Stewart who also wrote extensively about the California-Oregon trail, an account of the Donner Party, and Pickett's charge at Gettysburg.

47 The Freemasons
Is that even still a thing?
---
I was wondering the same thing about lodge life when I passed a Loyal Order of Moose building. It was in good condition so presumably they still have members attending. I picture a bunch of guys in fezes swilling highballs, but really that's how I picture all secret societies behaving, including the Illuminati, except their fezes have an Eye in the Pyramid patch.

Would young people want to be initiated into the mysteries of a lodge or society? That seems "exclusionary", plus you probably can't Instagram the ceremonies.

50 Who dis? Buster Keaton, of course. It's interesting that he should be posed reading a book, since, according to one biographer, he was functionally illiterate - a side effect of his bizarre childhood, growing up as literally a human punching bag in his father's vaudeville act. It amazes me that he could create movies as complex as "Sherlock Jr" or "The General" without being able to read.

The same thing is happening at other fraternal organizations. I was a member of the local Moose Club and it was dying out. My brother though is a member of the Gideon Society and he is very active and it appears they are doing fine.

53 My college fraternity was founded as a Masonic club at the University of Michigan (a team which was trounced by my college in last week's gridirons), and eventually opened up to non-Masons as it became a Greek organization.

We inherited some ritual and sayings and, um, robes. Not klannish, I'm sure. I always liked the idea of the Masons, my uncle was one, but I never ran into a Masonic organization since college.

Also, the peckerheads behind me let my fraternity go absolutely cacafuego and there is no longer a connection to the history.

57 For a number of reasons (two concerts and the interminable World Series, save us Mad Max and Stras) I didn't get much reading done this past week except for Tom Jones, which continues to be a pleasant surprise albeit very very long and, for a comedic work of fiction, not a page turner. I think the length of it wards off a lot of readers but for me the movie had me believing that it was a trite piece of shit like every other fucking thing in the sixties. Nothing could be further from the truth because this is an early, and very innovative, use of authorial interjections both through explanations of underlying sentiments expressed in dialogues and introductory chapters in each book that ruminates on things like plagiarism and why he doesn't lard the text with classical quotes in the original languages. The story itself is funny enough but Fielding's commentary puts it over the top.

"In his first full-length book since converting to Roman Catholicism over ten years ago, Thomas Howard presents his wonderful, refreshing insights on the "glad tidings" of the deeper meaning of Catholic piety, dogma, spirituality, vision and practice. . .the book's chapters take the form of lay meditations on Catholic teaching and practice, opening up in practical and simple terms the richness at work in virtually every detail of Catholic prayer, piety, liturgy and experience."

109 Since I've been in the hospital and rehab center, I've had plenty of time on my hands to read. A friend has been stopping by the house, feeding the cat, and bringing me stuff. One book she brought was "To Reach the High Frontier", edited by Roger D. Launius and Dennis R. Jenkins. It is a collection of articles about various U.S. launch systems and how they have evolved over the years. It was published in 2002. I must have bought it years ago and read it, but forgot about it.

What's interesting about it is the timing of publication. There are chapters about attempts to develop reusable rockets, but "SpaceX" and "Blue Origin" do not appear. SpaceX presumably existed only on the proverbial cocktail napkin at that time.

There is a chapter about small launch vehicles with a lament that there does not seem to be enough of a market for small payloads to make them economically viable. There were several startup attempts in the 90s that failed. The term "cubesat" is not found in the book.

In short, the book was written just as some very important changes were occurring in the world of spaceflight that would transform the whole scene. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to read it again and appreciate it in a way I didn't the first time. It's much like an update of Eugene M. Emme's 1964 "The History of Rocket Technology" which I also happen to have and have begun re-reading.

As an aside, I need to learn more about the Delta family of rockets. At the dawn of the Space Age, the Russians were able to build a rocket large enough to be able to launch pretty much any size payload they wanted. By contrast, the U.S. was forced to be resourceful to wring every bit of performance out of the much smaller rockets we could build, as well as miniaturizing spacecraft and electronic components. It is nothing short of amazing how the Thor IRBM coupled with the tiny Vanguard second and third stages evolved into one of the greatest and most successful launch vehicles in the entire history of the Space Age.

110 I read Illium and Olympis by Dan Simmons on Larry Correia's recommendation. I really liked Illium but found Olympos a slog, not entirely sure why the difference.

I found similarities with John C. Wright's works and wonder how much of an influence Simmons is, planning on reading more of Simmons canon in the future.

I also read the Saint Tommy NYPD series by Declan Finn, which I enjoyed but with decreasing amounts each book. I've never seen the Exorcists so if you have your mileage may vary. They are enjoyable supernatural action thrillers, like Monster Hunter but with a Catholic, detective spin.

Also read Starship Grifters, which was a fun, light, Scifi comedy. The 0th, 1st, and 2nd books were worth the time, I found the 4th tedious. Many of the titles were puns, like Out of the Soylent Planet. Fun stuff.

Also read Schrodinger's Gat by the same author, Robert Kroese, which was an interesting scifi examination of determinism and a possible escape through what C. S. Lewis called the basement of nature. Plus it has a great pun-based title, too. And read City of Sand by him, not bad, like a Micheal Crichton directed movie.

By 2011, there were holes in the roof and mold everywhere, including the books, so it didn't make sense to save anything. See http://www.detroiturbex.com/content/parksandrec/twain/

132 I just finished reading John Le Carré's latest book, Agent Running In The Field. I CANNOT recommend it. Aside from the f-bombs, it's mediocre as if it was written by another author. John Le Carré is my favorite spy novel author although I know he has always hated America specially Republicans. It seems he wrote this new novel just to vent on his anger at President Trump and the USA for electing "the worst president in American history". The book is written in the first person and the Trump hating rants are spoken by 2 other characters. The constant swearing and Trump rants were too distracting to fully enjoy the tale but I still continued reading until the end. Gave it 2 stars on Goodreads.

I must second what Jake said about "Why Meadow Died." The programs that allowed Nikolas Cruz to remain at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High were the invention of Arne Duncan, Barack Obama's Secretary of Education. Duncan was friends with Robert Runcie so he had Runcie implement Duncan & Obama's pipe dreams that were going to end the alleged "school to prison pipeline." It was a total disaster and travesty.

Katherine Kersten at the Mpls Star Tribune covered this "restorative justice" nonsense and the damage it does, and someone at City Journal, maybe Heather MacDonald, has done still more work on it. It's an unmitigated disaster brought to you by another of the Obama administration's "Dear Colleague Letters" (just like the ones that ended up depriving every man at college of his due-process rights) that Trump, thanks be to God, has banned with an executive order.

I'm only halfway through "Why Meadow Died" and I will give it five stars when I'm done. Highly, hugely recommended.

so of course he was removed by DeepState ... mafiosi and commies and crooks. As cynical of government corruption as we tend to be here at AoS, I bet it is much worse ... billions routinely stolen via fake contracts and huge grants, not to mention the monetary policy that served the richest. I came away from "Helmet For My Pillow" disliking Leckie. It's written in a self-consciously "literary" style (he was a newspapermam) that I have learned to cordially dislike, and he rarely has anything but contempt for his NCOs and officers. Plus he was a proud "brig rat", which doesn't do much for me.

Sledge, on the other hand, is a man I would have liked to have known. He wrote clearly and economically, and is full of praise for his fellow Marines. Which is particularly heartbreaking when he describes a stellar fellow whom he knew, only to learn the man was killed just a couple of pages later.

Nothing wrong with pursuing happiness, of course, but as with many things, people often look for it in all the wrong places.

313 It Didn't Start With Watergate by Victor Lasky.

It didn't end with Watergate either.

The Spike (1980) by Arnaud de Borchgrave is a "Roman a clef", a novel with a key. This is an honored literary tradition with roots going back at least as far back as Dante's Inferno.

The Spike details a lot of the Democratic treason that went on from the 1960s through 1980, with the names of the parties changed to avoid libel lawsuits. I believe I have worked out much of the "key", if anyone in the Horde is interested.

Some of the biggest traitors were:

The Institute for Policy Studies, The Multinational Institute, samuel Rubin, Cora Weiss
Senator Frank Church (D-Idaho)
Walter Mondale, Senator, later Carter's Vice President
Paul Warnke, Carter's Director of the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency (1977-7 and chief negotiator of the SALT II treaty, which was never ratified
David L. Aaron (Mondale protege and Brzezinski deputy)
Willy Brandt, head of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) of Germany from 1964-87 and Chancellor of West Germany, 1969-74
Philip Agee
The New York Times, Arthur Ochs "Punch" Sulzberger. Abe Rosenthal, Max Frankel
Pham Xuan An, Viet Cong spy and disinformation agent, who worked for Time, Reuters and the New York Herald Tribune
Wilfred Burchett, Australian journalist

Speaking of, I don't mind foreign words that can be easily recognized because their components have already been brought into the English language by some other means.

What I really hate though, is when some assclown writer adds a foreign phrase to his book, italicizes it, and just assumes the reader is already familiar with casually tossed out foreign phrases.

Makes me want to punch the person. Even if the writer is dead, which is often the case, I want to go dig up their corpse so I can punch it.

Yeah, sorry, no offense intended to anyone, but a hero is someone who risks something great, sometimes their own life, for a higher purpose.

A dog or horse or pigeon, no matter how well trained, is not capable of that, because they know not either what they are risking nor what is the higher purpose.

371 Good morning, horde!

Here's what I've been reading:

Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes: This is a story of a woman who is widowed at a young age, but she was in the midst of leaving her husband when she got the call that he was in an accident. It was deeper than I thought it would be. I think the author had good insight into human feelings and behavior. Overall, it was fun, charming, and honest, and I enjoyed it. It is one of my favorites of this year.

The Mother-In-Law by Sally Hepworth: This was a pager-turner for me. I couldn't put it down, and it kept me guessing until the end.

Revenge of the Wrought-Iron Flamingos by Donna Andrews: continuing with this mystery series. They are light, witty, and fun. On to the next one.

The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy: I listened to this one on audio book. The reason I was interested in reading it is that I love the made-for-TV movie by the same title (made in 1982). I usually watch it about once per year. I have tried reading the book, but I couldn't really get into it, so I decided to listen to it. Listening held my interest more so than reading, but the book plot was different than the movie. I found out that the movie was based upon the plots in both The Scarlet Pimpernel and El Dorado (another book by the same author). It is rare for me to say this, but I still like the movie better than the book.

I also started a thriller called City of Windows, but I ended up tossing it aside. The premise was initially interesting--A sniper is picking off law enforcement agents in NYC, and the FBI brings in a former agent who has highly specialized skills to help solve the case. But, I was turned off by the author's political views, and I didn't care enough about the story or the characters to finish it.

That's all for now. I hope you all have been reading some good books!

Pretty much every book I've bought in the last couple years have come from recommendations here.

With the exception of the geology books I've recently purchased. Having moved out here to the West, I decided I needed at least a smattering of understanding of what I'm looking at.

So expect in the coming weeks, I'll start talking like I'm a freakin' geologist, even though I have NOT stayed at any Holiday Inns recently.

421 A couple of weeks ago Vic mentioned that he was reading Tinker by Wen Spencer, and I remembered another book she had written, more of a one-off, called Endless Blue that I really enjoyed, mostly. So I re-read it. It is a pretty good space opera, with only a few issues that sounded clunky and there were a few bits of exposition, but I think Spencer, so far, is a pretty good writer, who writes fun to read books. To give her due praise, the whole premise was put down in the first two chapters, and formed the whole logical basis of the story. There was not cute tucking of extra information in just before the denouement like a bad whodunnit.

In the middle of an interstellar war against the alien Nefrim, a warp engine of the Jupiter Class carrier Fenrir appeared near the United Colonies space station New Plymouth. The Fenrir had been presumed lost in a battle a decade prior, it was suspected that it had been a victim of a bad wormhole jump. Ships that have bad jumps never come back. The engine was half encased in coral bio-engineered for terraforming human colony planets, and it was accompanied by three corpses and a surface boat powered by a salvaged anti-ship torpedo power plant.
To make it more confusing one of the corpses was an unlicensed "Red", or bio-engineered human, that are gestated and raised in creches as combat troops, and are as as military slaves.

The United Colonies are losing planets in the face of the unrelenting Nefrim assault, and are losing on both the military front and as their resource base shrinks with each lost planet, on the logistical front as well. Ship and troop losses are beginning to outstrip replacement, even with the accelerated rate that Reds are gestated and conditioned.

The reappearance of Fenrir's warp engine offers both the opportunity of new resources, a possible refuge from the attacking Nefrim, and possibility of new Reds to use as Soldier/slaves.

United Colonies asked the Captain of the Novy Rus frigate Svoboda to recreate Fenrir's bad jump and, being a ship capable of surface landing and take-off, come back to report on what happened.
The Captain of the Svoboda, Michael Volkov, agreed, but being the son and heir presumptive of Novy Rus, he negotiates for the claim of all resources found at the jump coordinates for Novy Rus.

Jumping into the wormhole that Fenrir disappeared into, Captain Volkov finds an inside out world of endless oceans, aliens, castaway humans, missing comrades, and has to find both a way to go home, a way to ensure the freedom of the castaways, and perhaps a way to end the war with the Nefrim.

I went to a very liberal Catholic high school and dropped religion completely afterwards. It was years later after attending a Tridentine Mass (where I didn't understand a word of it at the time) that I went back to the Church. Even though I didn't understand the words it still had profound impact on me. There was something about it that just resonated. It's too bad so many churches just want to be a group hug instead of actually having a proper Mass

495 Yesterday morning we got to talking about the problems of modern education not the least of which is the elevation of self esteem as a panacea which rights all wrongs and renders illiteracy, criminality, and ignorance irrelevant. Then I watched 48 Hours last night about the bizarre suicide of a sixteen year old girl.

That got me to thinking about an inherent contradiction in progressive education. On one hand, self esteem is the end all and be all of everything and, on the other hand, lightning struck a slime pit and great granddaddy popped out. No, the idea that there is a spark of the divine in you and that your life and every human life has inherent value is just religious hate speech and must be suppressed with great vigor.

Currently slugging my way through 'How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization' by Thomas Woods.

Woods presents his sources for the argument that the Church was largely responsible developing; free-market economics, Western law and legal procedures, the university system, and modern inquiry and science.

I enjoy the subject very much but he could have used a much better editor. The work doesn't flow well and he, many times, just says 'A because of B' without any further explanation. It's a tough read for me.

A lot is being made of the @washingtonpost's now-changed headline of al-Baghdadi's obit.

But how about this from the body of the obit itself?

"... an austere religious scholar with wire-frame glasses and no known aptitude for fighting and killing."

"despite the group's extremist views and vicious tactics, Mr. Baghdadi maintained a canny pragmatism as leader"

And

"a shy, nearsighted youth who liked soccer but preferred to spend his free time at the local mosque"

The local masonic lodge reached its peak enrollment about 1953, which was about the time that cross-country television broadcasts were started.
However, I believe that the purpose for the Masons was as a mutual society. It engaged in supplying help as members aged, and as a kind of insurance.

Most of the fraternal societies performed this role, and with insurance rules, they either lost that purpose, or were prevented from participating.

Masons as one of the original fraternal societies also allowed a sort of an outside of the established hierarchy line of communication that helped resolve issues in an informal way that would not be allowed under an established hierarchy. You could have the head stock clerk talk to the CEO if they were lodge brothers, for example.

600 Reading Jerry Pournelle's "Sparta" trilogy.

Which actually leads off with "Falkenberg's Legion" but they didn't have it at B&N. "Prince of Mercenaries" is good, but "Go Tell The Spartans" and "Prince of Sparta" are military sci-fi classics, remarkable expositions on guerilla warfare and how to counter it.

602 so of course he was removed by DeepState ... mafiosi and commies and crooks. As cynical of government corruption as we tend to be here at AoS, I bet it is much worse ... billions routinely stolen via fake contracts and huge grants, not to mention the monetary policy that served the richest. (Nixon went along with getting us completely off the gold standard, but he was still not compliant enough I guess)
Posted by: illiniwek at October 27, 2019 10:07 AM (Cus5s)

This is lost on a kook and a Conspiro such as yourself, but I'd argue vehemently that Nixon was his own worst enemy.

One, he did everything the Left wanted done in the hopes that they would like him more. He should have understood that he could have implemented McGovern's policies to the letter and they STILL would have hated him.

Two, his response to Watergate? Hold a press conference, announce that he fired a whole lot of people involved in the break-in, and that he was not going to put up with such shenanigans. Kill the thing in the first week. My suspicion is if that were done, he would have been President clear until January 1977.
