Incredible, Frightening Two-Man BASE Jump From Kuala Lampur Tower

I found the video below and have been googling to find out where this took place.

Apparently Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, permits -- even invites -- parachuters to come and jump from its KL Tower.

Daredevils from 25 countries just jumped from the tower.

Mohd Akmal was among 103 jumpers participating in the Kuala Lumpur Tower International Jump Malaysia (KLTIJM) 2019 event.

Now 34, the Movie Animation Park Studios stunt performer said he felt "reborn" after his first jump from the 300m-high sky deck.

Malaysia is, it seems, sort of a haven for legalized daredeviltry:

KLTIJM is the last of a series of BASE jump events in Malaysia this year. The other locations for the events were the Alor Star Tower, Gua Damai Xpark in Batu Caves and Wisma Sanyan in Sibu.

Watch this jump. As one viewer said: "It's a rollercoaster of emotions." Indeed.

Some other jumps from the event which just took place in late September or earlu October:

Here are some highlights from the 2018 jumps:

If you want to start planning your 2020 basejump vacation in Kuala Lampur, go here.

Apparently they let novices jump. That page notes that the crew supervising these jumps sometimes takes a "Who cares?" attitude about jumping in bad winds.

And sometimes novices crash into the building and get hurt.

In a picture, you can see the jumpers queued up nuts to butts waiting to jump. They look like they're being rushed on to the jumping platform. It's got a fast-food base jumping look to it.

Still: Pretty great.

Related: Apparently there is a gang of base jumpers operating (illegally) in Fairfax, Virginia, right outside of Washington, DC.

One of the top suspects is a 68-year-old former Army ranger.

I'm not at all sure, but this video matches some of the details offered in the article:

So trying to track down the KL Tower jump, I came across other base jump videos. Here's a good one.

This looks like an actual nightmare.

Okay, here are 50 city base jumps in less than five minutes.

Click to 1:28 if you just want to see some real Ethan Hunt shit. It's a guy climbing up on top of an external elevator, and then jumping when it gets to the top of the hotel.

By the way: You know what's more dangerous than base jumping?

Being a shepherdess to an ornery ram who's just had it up to here with being bossed.

When I was a kid, my mom had a super annoying friend that none of us liked.

We also had a yuuuge French Alpine billy that was our (or perhaps anyone's) meanest goat.

One day we convinced this guy to go into the enclosure with Mustafa.

He of course immediately attacked and rammed him, as he did with anyone who didn't routinely feed his crazy ass sweet grain. Usually, the other goats would just watch. But this time... they must have been able to sense the douche on this guy, because they all just piled on.

Good times.

Woman that lived across the street years ago got into skydiving after her husband died. She kinda lost her mind a bit because he had a brain tumor and the end of his life was pretty terrible.

She shattered her femur landing once, but wanted to keep doing it. Dr. told her "never again" because they had to put a steel rod in to repair it and he told her if she ever landed wrong again, that rod would ram up through her pelvis and rip through her insides, likely killing her.

But her choice. She bought a motorcycle instead and started dating a Harley rider that played poker for a living.

Interesting story. Made a stop Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland on vacation a few years ago. Apparently it's one the top spots for base jumping due to the shear cliffs and proximity of cable cars from the landing spots to the jump spots.

Anyway, we have an excursion planned and guy in a van picks us up. The family starts talking with the driver and it turns out he's a base jumper.

We get all "Ooh,wow, cool". He tells us about his family (wife and two small kids) then says he thinking about retiring from base jumping.

We asked why?

He say's: "Well, I really liked doing it with all my friends but they're all dead. It's no fun doing it alone"

171 Years ago, I went with some guy friends to watch them parachute for the first time. I was standing near the landing zone, when one of the guys completely forgot how to land, and landed stiff legged.

This may not make the point you think it does.

Maybe not, but before jumping I practiced extensively. I practiced cutting away the main canopy until the ability to do so was second nature, and I practiced landing (ankles together, knees flexed, eyes focused on the horizon) over and over off a platform.

This was in grad school, and four of us drove up to the parachute place in Napa Valley for several days running, but weren't allowed to jump because it was too windy. So we drove back, and repeated this for three days.

Finally, we said, "Fuggit. I can't stand the ups and downs. I'm not leaving until we jump." We slept overnight in the parking lot, because it's usually calm at dawn.

The funny part is that up in the plane I couldn't wait to get out and jump. Fumes from the airplane engine were drawn into the open door and making me nauseous, and I didn't want people to think I was about to hurl from fear. So I pretty much clawed my way out onto the wing strut just to get some fresh air.

Jumping was fun, but very expensive for a grad student, costing almost a week's pay, so that was that.

That said, while backpacking on the Appalachian Trial in Shenandoah NP this past weekend, I tripped, fell, and did my best face plant ever. A trip to the ER was in order and I have six stitches above my right eye from where the hinge on my eyeglasses dinged me.

It's for the edge cases, like when a gust of wind catches your chute and drags you along the ground, or you catch a tree or flagpole and get slammed into a trunk or a building, or when the chute doesn't fully open (it's survivable, but you might wish otherwise).

Plus, if your helmet is uniquely customized and you turn yourself into road pizza, it can identify your remains.

Posted by: Bob the Bilderberg at October 15, 2019 03:06 PM (qc+VF)

Agree on this one. My Dad still rides and he was in an accident. Got thrown. Broke six ribs, cracked a vertebrae and had to be medi-vaced to Louisville. When I got there he started complaining about not being conscious for the helicopter ride and worrying about how his bike was. Helmets.

Priorities.

246 81 Jumping was fun, but very expensive for a grad student, costing almost a week's pay, so that was that.

I did it in the seventies for $20 a jump. I stopped jumping after about $100 bucks. I was a student as well. And liked beer.

Musta been in CA. I jumped in the 70-80's in a club, 15 bucks to 12500 ft, 3-6 jumps in a weekend. Still had money for gas & whiskey. Of course i was in school and worked 2 jobs...

247 I used to work on four story scaffolds, parachuted, hung out on all sorts of helos, repelled and never had a problem with heights. Now I get my wife to drive over the Bay Bridge cuz I'm totally creeped out. I've turned into a pussy.
Posted by: Puddin Head at October 15, 2019 03:02 PM (yRAFu)

I understand. I have unpleasant thoughts driving across the Coronado Bridge.

I'm terrified of heights, in part because I know my balance sucks. Oddly, that didn't affect me in parachuting, because fall was planned for. Climbing onto a second story roof, where falling was NOT planned for, made me almost do something I haven't done since I was three years old.

It was in CA. As grad students we only made $400 a month, so $100 was a LOT of money to us.

259 243 My jumpmaster used to jump wearing hightop Converse sneakers laced tight. Our reserve chutes were basic Army chutes. His primary chute hung up on a jump and he had to pull the reserve. The stopping power of the reserve snapped him so hard that both sneakers were flung off his feet. He walked funny for about week after that too.

I rode the Big Zip zip line at Summit Bechtel Reserve, Scouting BSA's permanent base for its National Jamborees, in 2013.

A good friend of mine attached me to the trolley and told me to tuck my legs into the fetal position to gain maximum speed and also to watch the handlers below on the landing platform to know when to "open up" so as to slow down.

I set off, did a great tuck and was flying down the line. My handler on the platform wasn't paying attention until I was quite close, and frantically signaled me to open up. I did, but not enough to significantly slow down.

I CRUSHED the safety stops (compressed a huge six foot long heavy foam bumper to half its normal length). The bumper's recoil propelled me back off the platform and they had to send a line out to me to reel me in. I had a blast.

Later that day my friend contacted me to see if I was okay, as apparently my ending had the zip line's staff in a tizzy (they claimed that I hadn't been paying attention to the handler -- not true: I well know an "oh, shit!" reaction when I see one, and I saw one that morning). "Sure, why wouldn't I be?" was all I could reply.

267 Mrs LGoPs and I were over on Catalina Isalnd some years back and I decided that we should do the ride where a boat pulls you up in a parachute and hauls you along (I forget what the ride is called). Even though I'm terrified of heights I thought, hell, this can't be so bad. We got put into a tandem seat and headed up to about 600' by my guess. The wife loved it but then realized that I wasn't saying a word but my lips were moving. After we came down I told her I was saying Hail Mary's the whole time. Never again.

Not sure why anyone feels trepidation about engaging in dangerous sports, you risk your life simply getting up in the morning, and the greatest act of faith you can perform is going to sleep at night.

Think that over.
